As great as this old tutorial is, it's pretty hysterical to see everyone still asking questions 14 years later when not a single question has EVER been answered since this was posted. Y'all crack me up!
It took me an hour to find this tutorial and worth every minute, just wish it would come up first. I wanted to know how to set up a Subwoofer and all the other vids told me how to plug it ix and what to put the dials on. I did not want instructions for dummies. I wanted to know what all the buttons and nobs were for and you did than great, NO you did that the best. Thank you for a detailed PLAN English explanation on what they all do and how to adjust them. As a TH-cam contributor my self doing How To Videos I know how hard it is to do what you did. I thought I was great at it but I learned a few things from you on the creative side also. Hope you keep producing videos like this.
Thank you so much for presenting a tutorial-worthy video that actually goes into the detail I needed to hear on the phase and low pass filters settings! I wish I found this first so I didn't have to suffer everyone else on YT's dumb-foundedly useless speaker system set up videos where they go over nothing! Thank God for you!
I have a Subwoofer that doesn't have crossover nob. Only a high or low cut switch (stereo also doesn't have crossover settings). Now I now that having 3 cables L, R and LFE and using the setting both is perfect for my tiny speaker with sub setup. Thanks 👍 I am now playing with the volume nob etc.
Idk about y'all but when I install my stereo along with my 2 subs and my receiver and amplifier with my in wall speakers also connecting my tv screen connected to it so I can play my 360 I am having one of my friends do it for me. He knows exactly what he is doing. He does this stuff all the time.
Finally understand what sub crawl actually means. I've always seen idiots on TH-cam do that thinking we're just supposed to know that the sub should be placed in the seating position. They never mention that and yet crawl around the floor like a Neantherthal and I always what the hell they're doing.
Johnny Blaze a Crutchfield rep told me about the crawl method....but it is useless if you run a calibration tool that dials in the sound based on subwoofer placements
This is the best subwoofer set up tutorial I have watched to date. Clear explanations of every steps and settings. Thanks a lot to Martin Logan! Unfortunately, I cannot get electrostatic speakers at my place. My condo living room is not configured for this kind of speakers. But I will certainly look at the Martin Logan electrodynamic speakers from now on! 👍
thanks for the info regarding the left and right channels for music. i just used the single lfe cable from the amp, will be buying some extra cables now to connect the left and rights so i can enjoy music better.
This is THE best instructional video EVER about how to set up your audio system. And the funniest one. These people know what they are talking about. These guys are even more fanatic about audio than I am ! ;-) I'm watching all of these Martin Logan videos because I am seriously thinking about buying a set. Listen to them once and you're hooked...! I love their philosophy and the way they approach audio.
That is because that sub is not very good for music. With all subs placement, crossover setting and gain settings are critical. The better subs are so much easier to dial in. I would recommend running the Martin Logan speakers full range and adjust subwoofer starting with a low crossover of 50 or less and with a low volume setting and gradually increase volume a little at a time.
Damn, I have never messed with Home Theater Systems or Music set-ups and this is really complicated lol. Still a really informative and handy video for when I eventually get a sub-woofer.
I didn't find much help on this video, but i'm glad people are making videos like this. Now, i can't get my subwoofer to work with my receiver (sony str dh500). The subwoofer is a JAMO SW 1008. The sub has audio in right & left/mono/LFE and audio out left and right. I've tried the subwoofer/LFE connection, nothing. I've tried audio out on the receiver and audio in on the sub, nothing. For now, i'm trying to figure out how to do this, but if you can help me, please answer, so i can get this working. :)
Janne Korpela check trim level on your amplifier go to test tone and see if you can adjust,I suffered same kind of thing on DENON x4200 worked fine for movies but for music no good the trim level was -11db hence no bass for music. hope this helped if you still have your amp or anyone else having this kind of problem try it
You've probably already solved this issue from two years ago, but I would start by getting rid of the Sony receiver and never consider owning another a or v device of that brand, unless you're ready to make a marriage-status commitment to Sony and do promise to have and to hold only Sony other components in your system until death do you part while the nature of the infinitesimal corporate beast lives indefinitely. Not because I dislike their products, but Sony has for awhile already been like Apple is now- monopolistic greed mongers whom just do not play well with others. Their unspoken exclusivity is just not a realistic approach to the world of audio and video. Most people have systems consisting of Kenwood this, with an Onkyo that. I personally don't like feeling limited to a brand when I'm adding to a system. Universality is paramount between devices and if all brands veer in the direction of Apple or Sony, (not to throw stones) just as examples, well what a controlled and contrived, disgustingly programmed society of robots this nation would be. Yuck. The U.S. were formed because the people wanted their own choices in life. Don't let "them" chip away at our freedom right under our noses with small things like this because if we fail to notice and ignore, the de-evolution of our society as the beast gradually but eventually finds its way into having control over bigger things over us, then it very well could be that one day when it's too late you realize you are affected when you get locked out of your own home in an emergency and are unable to get in.
Thanks for the video. I have Onkyo TX-SR494 AV Receiver and need amp to power two Acoustic Audio HDS10 in Wall 10" subs. Can you recommend a sub amp to match the AV R around 80 watts at 8 ohms each channel? Thanks.
The subwoofer has an input in the receivers, since it is a special frequency only for subwoofers, the audio outputs (L, R,) are to connect a DVD player, Blue Ray, CD, etc., you forgot to say that in your video, greetings,
Thanks, I have a much better understanding if it now :) I think it's time to spend the next half hour setting up my system again and pissing my neighbours off :)
So is this the reason my car amplifier doesn't pick up the Lfe pre out? 🤔 I currently just use F, L R lines to the low level rca but bass is too much for the sourounding speakers. I blew up an old 250w tower speaker without even trying. Setting up the Yamaha RX-V467 is harder than I thought
I guess I am confused how you would get a subwoofer response while playing music if you connect the subwoofer to the 'Video Out' outputs on the receiver? I use like 5 different outputs on my receiver. Wouldn't this only play the receiver while the Video input is active? I seem to be getting great response for music and movies attached to the subwoofer connection.
For two channel setup I found that it's better to have two equal subs one on R playing R channel bass and vice versa. That way the bass in the music doesn't get pulled to one side or the other messing up your sound stage. Went with single sub setup for years but finally realized that which side the bass comes from actually does matter in music, not so much in movies though...
This depends on the speakers used and music listened. Most music has mono bass in the low end to keep other frequencies in their place. You dont want unnecessary competition for space in your mix as a mixer/master. I suspect it is more about the standing wave issue and better distribution of bass in your room.
if bass gets pulled to one side or the other with a single subwoofer, that means it's not set up right at all. It's either got bad room placement, the output level is far too high, or the crossover frequency is too high. Watch the video again and follow the instructions on proper subwoofer setup, and it will not pull the bass towards the sub.
I am thinking of downloading Martin Logan's subwoofer app on my android phone, will it work with the Dynamo I have:Dynbld Dynamo 10inch subwoofer. Thanks.
Nice video! I am obsessed with people who prefer roof shocking bass, I respect their preference. However, a real subwoofer is a speaker that complements the whole system, playing frequencies that the main speakers are unable to handle, so to have a flatter frequency response. At 40Hz, the frequency response should be +0, not +10
Hi, what if the subwoofer has 2 LFE(L+R) inputs, do you use 1-to-2 RCA cable or just use 1-to-1 cable and plug it into either L or R terminal of the subwoofer LFE terminals? Thanks
Denon AVR-3801 AM/FM Stereo 735-Watt 7.1-Channel Home Audio Surround Receiver - sub woofer has a pre out right and left. the 2 subs i want to hookup has only one right left in on each sub. how to i hook them both up without loosing any power from each.? i did hook with a splitter one wire/ cord to each but lost power or sound to each too. do i need multiple kinds of splitters for this? thanks for any info? or help...i had pics but don't see where to add them? hmm.. but any help would be great! Thanks..
So I have one of those blu ray all in 1 surround sound systems . The sub line is only a wire one with line on it one withought one pos and neg . Well my sub blew and while looking on line wife found a stupid deal on a power sub by polk audio 600$ for $180 bucks 460w 12 inch . I couldn't find the 5inch sub it came ith for that cheap so either way its going to sound better than what I had but was curious Whats the best way to hook this up for sound quality
PHASE QUESTION: I often hear people ask, "Should I have my subwoofer set at 0 Phase or 180 Phase." This is an important question and I understand the logic behind it. If it was simply a matter of a Phase switch on a subwoofer, the answer would be fine - there would be only two possible choices (0 or 180). However, it is not that simple. My A/V Receivers from Onkyo and Sony allow me to select 0 or 180. This means there are FOUR possible scenarios. Those scenarios are: AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 180 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 180 I fully understand that if you have your subwoofer in the front of the room, you should have both the A/V Receiver set at 0 and the Subwoofer set at 0. However, my confusion and question relates to when the subwoofer is in the back of the room. I know by subwoofer should be at 180 Phase. ... However, does this mean BOTH the A/V Receiver and the Subwoofer should be set at 180? Or does this mean only ONE of them should be set at 180? In other words, I'm asking if you want the Subwoofer set at 180, does that mean the A/V Receiver also needs to be set at 180? If not, does this mean placing both the A/V Receiver at 180 and the Subwoofer at 180 will create a form of 360 Phase? If you could explain this, I would appreciate it.
If you have a phase adjustment in the sub and receiver than its just an extra redundant control. Only make your changes to one control. Either leave the receiver at one setting and only change the setting on sub and listen to your preference or vise versa. Not both.
I think the pertinent question we need to address first is: why we have "phase" in the first place? Then we can proceed to: which setting is best and when? Phase is basically the direction of the signal/speaker driver/cone movement, which has two categories: "in-phase": This is when your main speaker-drivers move forward/backwards at the same time as your subwoofer (setting is: 0 because this is the original position, without any subwoofer rotation). This is recommended if the sub/s is placed on the same side of the room as your main speakers, where there is no possibility of soundwave "collision" which can produce unexpected results in sound quality. Then there's: "out of phase": This is when the main speaker-drivers move in opposite direction to that of the subwoofer, that is; when the main speaker drivers move forward, the subwoofer driver moves backwards (setting is: 180, because you've rotated your subwoofer 180° to face your front mains) so as to avoid the soundwave "collision". This is mostly recommended in cases where the subwoofer is placed on the opposite end of the room, and is facing the main speakers. I've got my Receiver on one setting and I'd just toggle my phase-switch if I need to change phase, because the phase input on the Receiver basically tells the Receiver which direction the subwoofer is facing, which can be adjusted on the sub itself. My sub is set at 0 even though it's placed 90° to my mains because my sub can only do 0 or 180°, there's no in-between settings, and it's also due to lack of space😀
With a two subwoofers system, do both subs need to have the phase set to normal, or could one be set to reverse? An audio signal is alternating current so I'm wondering if a 2 sub system can cover the entire sine wave of a signal and get a bigger punch!
no. either the receiver needs 2 lfe hookups or you can run a splitter because most receivers with 2 lfe's are pre split inside the casing instead of actually running 2 seperate lfe signals. some of the nicer more expensive pre amps will have 2 seperate lfe hookups with 2 different signals
I have a problem where playing music the sub sounds very good. but during playback of a movie sometimes the sound clips and you can hear the voice coil hit the magnet. I've tried all kinds of settings of the crossover in the receiver and the sub. it helps the most if I turn the LPF of the LFE to off in the crossover settings of the receiver. if I leave it set to any of the 80-120hz settings it hits the magnet really hard. something isn't right. I didn't have this problem with my old sony receiver. I have an Onkyo TX-NR686.
placing a sub in the middle of the room and walking around the walls is a good trick to find that well balanced sweet spot, but what if you are using multiple subwoofers? wouldn't there be canceling and uneven sounds around the room? Also how do you get that nice long smooth base in comparison a thudding? Is it closer of further from the corner and wall? I'm really starting to appreciate subs placements maximizing room shapes.
Keep away from corners. I find the best results next to my main speakers. The sub does need to be against a wall. This gives it 2 reinforced boundaries wall and floor but in the corner you have 3 boundaries reinforcing the sound giving you more output but at the expense of Accuracy Speed Agility Timing.
is it possible to use a+b speaker selection for sub connection... like A for front speakers and B out put to subwoofer high level or line in part of sub.. and play the amp both a+b speaker out puts same time.. is it okey this way.. any recommendation ?
Great video, thanks you so much! A bit off topic but I have the Dynamo 700W and just noticed that when it is in stand by mode (Red light on) the Blue light continues to flash. Is that normal? I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere and ran across this vid, hope you don't mind the off topic question.

Un gran video, GRacias, se ruega hablar un poco mas despacio, para los que no somos anglosajones, saludos, desde ESpaña,
is there a way to make my bass hit quick and hard (punches) instead of that loud and low annoying CONSTANT rumbling that drowns out all the vocals? thanks. This is for a car audio system
Man the more I look into my setup the more I have it all wrong. Great vid but I'm soooo confused.I have a Klipsch Synergy 12. I connected just the "LEFT/LFE" to my receivers "sub out" It sounds great and all but when I connect another cable rca cable that's right next to it labeled" Right/line in" It sounded much louder. SO why is it most vids say just connect the lfe only? Also why cant I find a rca cable that have 3 male out in a 25ft length? All I see are 2 males out and then a 3.5mm stereo jack on the end which then I have to use a mono jack/to rca.. The 3 male RCA I do find all seen to be no longer then 15ft. Please help

This wasn't even the video I was looking for but I watched it anyways, because this guy deserves all my time.
I have watched a bunch of these videos.this is in my opinion of the hours of subwoofer tip videos i have watched is the best.nice job
I've been setting up systems for decades, and I still learned something from this video. Much appreciated!
This is absolutely the best Subwoofer management Tutorial.
Thanks a lot, really helped me :)
Please please please help me set up my Bose Acoustimass!!
My God, someone who REALLY knows what theyre on about for once. This guy even knows about room eigitones. Not that I expected less from Martin-Logan.
You must mean eigentones

Hands down the most helpful bass/sub video I’ve come across. And this has been my mission for 4 days. Good job.
I dont know about you guys but I love an audience! No matter what im doing and who im doing it with, my blinds stay open!!!
Thank you so much for presenting a tutorial-worthy video that actually goes into the detail I needed to hear on the phase and low pass filters settings! Probably the most informative to this subject. And info on special cables used could be added along
Idk about y'all but when I install my stereo along with my 2 subs and my receiver and amplifier with my in wall speakers also connecting my tv screen connected to it so I can play my 360 I am having one of my friends do it for me. He knows exactly what he is doing. He does this stuff all the time.
Still the best tutorial in 2024
i agree this the best video i found the rest of the youtubers dont show the reciever and subwoofer together
Very well done video!great job! you kept it simple and easy to understand. Thank you!
i love martin logan products so much
This is the best subwoofer set up tutorial I have watched to date.
This is just what I needed. Thank you.
Thank you, Very helpful and furthered my understanding of LFE.
With option "LFE+Mains" in some AVR (such as Denon) you can use only LFE.
Thank you so much for your help. It made all the difference 👍
Some great information was shared thanks 😊
thanks for the info regarding the left and right channels for music. i just used the single lfe cable from the amp, will be buying some extra cables now to connect the left and rights so i can enjoy music better.
on my subwoofer only 2 inputs L/R. and it says if I want to connect LFE use left (white input) so what to do if I want both?
+Sigitas Ziurys it's a tannoy subwoofer sfx 5,1
+Sigitas Ziurys got it! there is some more speaker level inputs, didn't notice them

Will you mind sharing the video with us??
Way to go Eli....
@Eli
I'm saying nothing! Lol

🤔😄😄😄
highly recommend procella audio v21 (dual 21 inch subs in a box )
What a great video. Simple and to the point
Great Video
Do you have a video on installing 2 subwoofers and how to set them up properly?
i just buyed a logitech z906 great sound, very easy set up, great for gaming

Very funny video but above all was very instructive. Great quality production too. Kudos!
it will be more easy if we use our mind .....but this video push us to the other side
Do all receivers send LFE through the subwoofer output. My Sony ZA3000ES does not say LFE, just subwoofer.
Spoken with authority.
6:29 The moment that it actually smells good .
i remember the good old days when you just used the high level inputs connected to the main outs with speaker cables
plenty of people who buy stereo amps for music still do this
Thanks for practical information
Thanks for the video. I have Onkyo TX-SR494 AV Receiver and need amp to power two Acoustic Audio HDS10 in Wall 10" subs. Can you recommend a sub amp to match the AV R around 80 watts at 8 ohms each channel? Thanks.

i was messin with you, and since the video was filmed that makes it past tense, so its wore.
Nice what to listen for approach
Sure, its up to you if you really want to :)
Is the cable used to hook up a subwoofer a coax cable or a rca cable and what is the difference?
I guess I am confused how you would get a subwoofer response while playing music if you connect the subwoofer to the 'Video Out' outputs on the receiver? I use like 5 different outputs on my receiver. Wouldn't this only play the receiver while the Video input is active? I seem to be getting great response for music and movies attached to the subwoofer connection.
Cheers Marty....or is that Logie?
Is there a PhD program in electronics that I missed to be able to use today's home theater? I remembered the milk and eggs and forgot the damn PhD.
So I can use the pre outs on my integrated to connect a subwoofer?? With everything sounding like it should??

I fully understand that if you have your subwoofer in the front of the room, you should have both the A/V Receiver set at 0 and the Subwoofer set at 0.
However, my confusion and question relates to when the subwoofer is in the back of the room. I know by subwoofer should be at 180 Phase. ... However, does this mean BOTH the A/V Receiver and the Subwoofer should be set at 180? Or does this mean only ONE of them should be set at 180?

Actually, you still only have two real phase settings. 0 and 0 is the same as 180 and 180, and 0 and 180 is the same as 180 and 0.
Hi Im having Harmon/Kardon AVR 171 and JBL ES150/230. Can I know what will be the best setting?
What about high level inputs the best way to connect a sub
With a two subwoofers system, do both subs need to have the phase set to normal, or could one be set to reverse? An audio signal is alternating current so I'm wondering if a 2 sub system can cover the entire sine wave of a signal and get a bigger punch!
? if I'm using the lfe for video, do I still hook up the line levels if I want to play stereo?
no. either the receiver needs 2 lfe hookups or you can run a splitter because most receivers with 2 lfe's are pre split inside the casing instead of actually running 2 seperate lfe signals. some of the nicer more expensive pre amps will have 2 seperate lfe hookups with 2 different signals
Please, I have a receiver "Onkyo 616" my subwoofer "Jamo 210" does not have LFE input, what better way to connect them? thank you
I use the LFE input. My question is, what wire is better coaxial, or rca ?
0:38, there is an error, you can't connect the subwoofer to a fixed audio out of the receiver.
Hello ,I bought a Dynamo 500 it’s possible to connected straight into the Tv. I don’t have any receiver. Thanks
I have an Onkyo TX-NR686.
how about subwoofer without lfe? is that mean they are not design for movies?
Should I put my sub on LFE for movies and music I have set for to cut off at about a hundred and ten Hertz right now
placing a sub in the middle of the room and walking around the walls is a good trick to find that well balanced sweet spot, but what if you are using multiple subwoofers?
wouldn't there be canceling and uneven sounds around the room?
Also how do you get that nice long smooth base in comparison a thudding? Is it closer of further from the corner and wall?
I'm really starting to appreciate subs placements maximizing room shapes.
Keep away from corners. I find the best results next to my main speakers. The sub does need to be against a wall. This gives it 2 reinforced boundaries wall and floor but in the corner you have 3 boundaries reinforcing the sound giving you more output but at the expense of
Accuracy
Speed
Agility
Timing.
Great video, we could use a lot more like it
Oh.... that was why.... Thank you!
Why 70% of the main speakers bass extension? Aren't you missing that 30% then? Super interested! :)
is it possible to use a+b speaker selection for sub connection... like A for front speakers and B out put to subwoofer high level or line in part of sub.. and play the amp both a+b speaker out puts same time.. is it okey this way.. any recommendation ?
After watching this I returned my subwoofer....
Un gran video, GRacias, se ruega hablar un poco mas despacio, para los que no somos anglosajones, saludos, desde ESpaña,
down-firing model for nearfield close to listener , front-firing model for home theater in front of the listener , right ?
Is it possible to hook up the subs and they will still bump or make the same type of noise.
Lfe if split into the rca will that put music bass through
is there a way to make my bass hit quick and hard (punches) instead of that loud and low annoying CONSTANT rumbling that drowns out all the vocals? thanks. This is for a car audio system
What no summed mono option? ;-) nice home guide thank you.
I just find out I have a lot of work to do with setting my sub the way it should be.
Please help
You have it right. Leave it alone.
So I could just use the audio out with the two rca connections and plug them into the left and right on the subwoofer?
THANKS VERY MUCH MAN!!! YOU'VE BEEN SO HELPFUL
