    It’s funny how we’ll sometimes wear wigs without washing the cornrows underneath for months and then call freeform locs dirty. It says a lot because no style expresses the true coiliness of 4c hair like freeform locs do. With freeform locs you don’t get to hide behind your twist-outs and blow-outs and heartless stretches anymore. It literally forces you to accept yourself. I wish I had the courage to be that free sometimes. I’m getting there.

    It's especially shocking when people with manicured locs make fun of freeformers and call them dirty. Some people also associate free forming with poverty, assuming you don't have enough money to pay for a retwist.

      @angelica69 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Yeah as someone with manicured locs I make it my mission to speak out when someone says something bad about freeforms. I don’t understand why people with locs judge freeforms like they are too good for them.

      For real, if its not Bob Marley esk people talk mess about you. I wear frizzy twistouts so my hair has a free form look to it even tho its not locd. I remember this dude with locs told me I look like Sideshow bob and that I need to go twist my own hair instead of advertising that I do locs. And said he would never let me touch his locs. I told him hair is energy and I would never want to touch him nor help him. I also told him those constant re-twist are the reason his crown is thinning and locs are splitting and breaking. lmao

      @@angelica69 I think because a lot of ppl with manicured locs do it as a trend and only want to achieve a certain look (e.g. the long goddess locs look with laid edges, curly ends, etc. Mayowa did an interesting analysis of that look a while back, too!) Many of them aren't so interested in the natural look/journey of self-acceptance, etc.

    I think it’s a form of projecting.
    Historically speaking Europe was known to be dirty and the people practiced bad hygiene. Illnesses were a big problem, high child mortality rate, etc. All linked to bad hygiene.
    Even the plague that killed Europeans like no other was so heavy because of bad hygiene.
    Guess what. It was a black people from north west Africa called the Moors who taught whites how to properly clean themselves and brought their superior medicine.
    It was Africans who saved Europeans existence because of that.
    In Germany not too long ago streets, pharmacies, bakerys or chocolate was named after the moors because of their contribution to their society. There were little images of black men in uniforms at the pharmacies too depict the moors. It has been removed now because it was also associated with racism. But since i realized the true root of racism is extreme envy and jealousy it made sense. They project their own image on us, while appropriating and strealing from us. It’s a culture of envy. We can not relate, because we come from abundance.
    Lesson: Don’t save or help a culture of envy.

      This! I'm old enough to remember when weaves became more "affordable". I used the quotations because sisters would have them in for like 2 months to get their money's worth despite stench and itching. All the ways we do our hair is creative but some still wondered if my hair was clean/sanitary just because it was natural, so-called 4c hair in twists, an afro puff, etc. It's a shame cos many natural sisters like me were meticulous about hygiene because that's who we were, but also because of the presumption that unstraightened hair meant we'd "let ourselves go" or "didn't care".

    Anti blackness is real. And everyone has internalized it. Everyone.
    For some reason, everyone wants black people, to change who they are and what they look like to mimic European standards and looks.
    Sorry, I'm not European. And it's a journey to love yourself for who you are and how you choose to show up in the world.
    When black people just show up as who they are, it's a problem for so many people. It's sad AF.
    While I personally adore locs and when I had them, they were NOT freeform. Even for me, freeform locs show me my own internalized anti blackness. You have really helped me with that Mayowa.
    It's deep. I'm currently growing my hair out now and I'm going semi free form! I'm excited!

      When you say everyone, it really is everyone. I have a brother who's white with very eurocentric features, all except for his hair, which is a tight, curly texture. When it's long it's practically an afro. We have no black relatives, he's just white with tightly curled hair. And he's always hated it, when he was a kid he would cry for hours because all he wanted was straight hair. And recently he's finally found something for his hair texture that he'd actually like and feel beautiful in. He wants locks. But our dad literally told him not to get them because they were dirty.

    My hair isn't the super dense texture that you are calling 4c but I stopped getting my locs rolled and interlocked and all of it, 5 years ago in May. It isn't shiny. The new growth is like fuzz and some of it refuses to join existing locs. Three years ago on Christmas eve my sister attacked me saying it was dirty. Mind you she didnt know it was free forming until I told her I wasn't getting it done anymore. She said I would look like the dope heads on the street. And my mother said "thank you". Like it validates her and makes me the one who is wrong. I came home and told my daughter and she was shocked that they did that. Then she said don't worry mommy. So I took her advice.

    Afro hair, more so 4c hair, in its natural / virgin state (washed, uncombed, unprocessed chemically) just normally and naturally forms clumps and the beginnings of what we now call free form locs. Before our ancestors created combs, platting, braiding, and Bantu knots, I am certain this is the natural state they will have kept it in. Our hair was never meant to be combed and certainly not with the tools and manner in which Caucasian type hair is because such treatment easily causes breakage and stumps growth. When Afro hair is left together, unmanipulated, , it grows long and strong, a reflection of our communal African societies - (together we are strong and we thrive). When combed into individual strands, reminiscent of individualistic European societies, it becomes weak, breaks and fails to grow.

      EVERYBODY's hair, in its natural/virgin state (washed, uncombed, unprocessed chemically), just normally and naturally forms clumps. If white people do not comb their hair, tangles appear. It becomes matted. The comb changed things up for EVERYBODY. There are things about our hair that are very different. There are also similar things about our hair because we're all human. The ways in which we choose to style our hair are what is special and unique and worth appreciating.

    I have a stand up dryer that I can sit under because I realized as my hair grew longer it was not completely drying. I sit under the dryer and than blow dry my roots before doing my really big twists.
    I tested with air drying stretched hair it takes three days to dry and natural no stretching a full week.
    It has to be a really hot like the equator of Madagascar for my hair to dry within 15 minutes, the Caribbean Summer 30 minutos and the dog days of Summer in NYC? 45 minutes.

    I have 4c hair. Let's make something clear, just because a black person doesn't like dreads does not mean they are anti-black. We as black people have a right to a different opinion. I would not ever publicly say someone's dreads are nasty. Me myself I dont like the look , but some people do and that's their business. I DONT ALLOW ANYONE TO PUT ME IN ANY TYPE OF BOX AND NONE OF US SHOULD DESPITE WHAT ETHNIC GROUP WE BELONG TO. STAY BLESSED AND THINK FOR YOURSELF.

    I always kinda got that vibe by how compulsive or made fun of people get for not getting a lineup every 2 weeks, or not showing their scalp and having uniform locks with square visible sections. on the flip side, I can see where some people may be coming from with the giant 4inch diameter + locks, seeming like it could be hard to wash, but either way, its not a good look, and not a good thing to support to bring down your own people

    I totally agree with you on the fiery darts thrown at us, by us. It’s stupid for us to do that to each other. I have hair that has been locked for 2 years 4 months. I went to an acquaintance’s elderly mom’s, decided to help him take bagged food into her home, only to have her insult my hair. She told me that she didn’t “like” my hair like this and that it looks “real silly.” 😳 I was completely blindsided by this, but I replied by telling her that this is the way my hair grows naturally from my scalp and to take it up with the creator.

      I lived in NYC for 5 years. In the summertime on the subway, it smells like LITERAL wet , sweaty dog and the smell is coming from them. I've even observed that in train cars where there were only black people, I've never smelled it. Many people in NY know this and talk about it, the smell is nauseating.

    The over obsession with cleanliness is definitely anti black because we see it all the time in things like housing, where people literally will not want to rent an apartment if they learn a Black family previously lived in it or a house - the realtors will literally mark a house value down by THOUSANDS if they know a Black family owned it before. Experienced it myself with renting, landlords (White and Hispanic ones) always treated my family like we were never clean enough to be living in their rundown buildings. Everyone's mind is supremely colonized. Their hate of Blackness is directly linked to their hatred of Mama Earth that birthed them! A shame.

    First of all I’m black but “mated” hair is always associated with negligence therefore someone with free form locs is the perfect victim,which is a stereotype.If one has ordinary locs there’s control in size,style etc
    In my opinion our natural hair texture is not mated.

    I'm not proving cleanliness to colonizers that most people's they were subjugating could smell coming.
    I don't know what kind of grooming goes with free-form locs. For me my issue with protective styling wasn't washing but drying. Cleaning wasn't an issue, but if I didn't take the time to properly dry it, that's when I had issue. But like...Many if not most of us are washing our hair

    I love your locs! I have locs that I have retwisted every 6-8 weeks and I so ready to go semi free form. So sad that we feel that we have to prove ourselves in so many different ways in so many different arenas. Some are so full of self hate.

  • @moneybags999
    @moneybags999 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I get what she's saying but there's always going to be different schools of thought regarding personal grooming. The same can be said of women (of any race) who don't shave their legs or armpits or don't trim or shave their pubes or people who choose not to wear deodorant because they want to be natural. If a person with naturally straight or wavy hair chose not to comb their hair & "let it do what it do," it would freeform loc, too. 4c hair isn't the only type of hair that gets matted & locs up.
    I'm black so I definitely understand why & how this is or could be connected the concept of anti-blackness but I can also see how it looks through the eyes of an outsider if they're accustomed to matted hair being connected to being "unkempt" because lack of manipulation (whether intentionally or not) is typically how hair get loc'ed.
    I do however hate that people feel that they have the right to denigrate people for being different. I see this even within the black community when they feel the need to comment on the size of someone's larger than average nose, lips, hair, skin tone, body type, etc...just for likes. It's almost like they can't be at peace until they verbalize their banal observations to the world. It's sad.

    I just can’t imagine getting any satisfaction out of pointing at a young and beautiful and talented black man and telling the world you think he’s dirty. I don’t understand that. Why can’t we publicly protect and uplift each other with all our various textures and styles?

    • @fruitsarelife7073
      @fruitsarelife7073 ปีที่แล้ว

      White culture is super narrow minded. If you don’t fit into their box, you are bad in some type of way. There is no freedom if you want to conform.
      Freedom is when you don’t care about the opinions of all who conform to it. That includes black people.
      Because many internalized narrow white culture and mentality.
      Let’s not sell our soul to white culture and sacrifice our true selves and freedom of cultural expression for it.❤

    I recently fell into the rabbit hole of "feminine" hygiene TH-cam, where I see (mostly PoC) women using lots and lots of different products on their bodies to smell like some vanilla cupcake ice cream fantasy and the overall vibe seemed kinda off to me (in a "you need top scrub off every last layer of your skin to finally be less than disgusting"-kind of way) - I would be so interested in your take on this subject, since I have only found very little people on the internet commenting on this.

    Love this video. What is that saying, " ignorance is bliss". Obviously. I feel that all the haters of free form are really just jealous because we are doing something different and natural. The reality is that free formers in general are using much less product in our hair and it is much more cleaner. We use natural shampoos and aren't putting all the gunk in our dreads that the manicured loc wearers do. I just hold my head up proudly and strutt my stuff. Peace

    I agree people with free-form locks need to be allowed to have them without judgment or at the very least, without ridicule. One thing though, I will argue that manipulating ones hair and being seen as proper /more respectable( though clean is a stretch)is NOT a eurocentric standard. Our african ancestors and many tribes took pride in manipulating their hair as a form of status(mainly with intricate braided or stretched styles) long before the Europeans. Now we can comment on the potential classism there but that's a whole other argument.
    To make it seem like free-form locs is this staple in black African culture is a stretch. Most of our black African ancestors wouldn't be crazy about it either, especially on women.

    Off topic but you know what else I love , when 4cers let their hair clump form then shape it into geometrical fros of different shapes. I don’t see it as much in this era- hoping it will come back. My husband and two of our children have beautiful 4c hair. My husbands locs were free form started. It’s amazing how when this hair type is left in it’s natural state it intuitively knows what to do💛
    The majority of people who come at the hygiene of free forms and 4c hair in general are the type of people who will leave the house with a filthy kitchen full of dirty dishes Chile bye. Love your channel Mayowa.
