As a coach, I would add 1 more thing to your form. In the side-by-side of you and Novak, you can see he finishes his service motion with the racquet face turned up (the side you use to hit the ball). This motion I call the waiter motion. As you strike the ball you can start turning your hand so your palm faces to the sky, like holding a plate. This gives more top-spin which equates to a higher consistency. The ball will have a higher arc and will dip faster into the service box. I hope you get your serve going! I'm routing for you!
that's a casual surgery drop my guy, love the vids! I play USTA 4.5 and I just love how you guys have dedicated yourselves to the game since you started. Keep playing and the strokes will come as you guys are clearly athletes. look forward to watching you guys on the journey!
I,m following the same journey as you, and after watching a video of myself (for which I had to consume at least 8 beers just to be able to watch) I was demoralised beyond belief! I decided to cancel 90% of the instructional you tube video channels suggesting the holy grail of ‘how to’ ….. Whilst doing this I stumbled upon your channel…Finally someone real that I can relate to undergoing the same struggle in the quest to be decent at Tennis… Man I so get your pain! Thank you, you have restored my faith in the journey and made me realise I am not alone, as well as reducing me to tears with laughter, you have made me realise that this journey has to be enjoyed! If you ever find yourself in Italy I’m up for a Sunday set! Respect, and thanks again! Keep the faith brother!
I follow gravity tennis, and really like his philosophy on tennis, his channel is underrated. About 15 years ago, I did the same challenge, 1000 serves a day, but without instruction, or even filming, or online guidance. It was the stupidest thing, I was cranking those balls, with probably horrible technique and adding volleyball spiking to it probably caused the root of my shoulder pain, which lingers to this day. Now with more wisdom (and patience) My shoulder and serve is getting better. Perfect practice makes perfect. I believe, your serve looks really good for just 1 week of training. But please don’t overdo it, I think serving 100 vs 1000 a day really doesn’t make you improve faster, I would say 100-200 quality serves is optimal, and in my case rest days in between. Let me know your method for improving racquet drop, because I have the same problem.
Perfect practice only makes perfect if you are using the correct swing mechanics on the serve that don't put your body or your shoulder at risk of injury. He don't need to hit 1000 serves every day for a week, this is overtraining. 100-150 serves a day from monday to saturday an hour each day should be enough practice for him.
@@scammersnightmare he should learn how to do the big flat backhand slice drive instead of just only that floating one that sits up in the court. i think you need both the float and also the flat slice for the backhand.
Just started learning to serve a few days ago. Im mad at myself for being stubborn and trying to figure out the serve on my own. But after i got 30 minutes of instruction i learned that my theory on the physics of a serve were wayyyy off. Not only was i not gripping the racquet incorrectly, my body positioning was off. Excited to see how this knowledge translates after a few weeks of practice.
I admire the dedication! But on a serious note, please give your body ample time to recover, especially when you are just starting out. The risk of injury is not worth it especially when it becomes an injury that limits your range of motion. Scar tissue forming around the shoulder is no joke.
To get the type of improvement you're looking for it'll take more like 1000 serves a week for about 2-3 months. You'll also have to go back to the lab from time to time when you're struggling, but after that point you should be pretty comfortable. Love that you're practicing with first and second serve and putting yourself in game mode by trying not to double fault. Keep it up and you'll be past your double-fault worries in no time.
Well done for getting the reps in but 1,000 served per day is overkill. Only need to hit 100 serves at a time. Also change your serve grip to a continental and your serve will be so much better once you're used to it. I can see that in time, you'll have a very good serve as you have pretty decent mechanics and they'll only improve. Keep trucking👍
I was doing 3000 jump ropes per day video for 30 days but stopped halfway due to sickness. I was dumb to scrape it and not finish it like you do. Good contents!
There's a mental aspect of serving: to overcome the dinking/underarm 2nd serve and trust the acceleration in your stroke in a match. Some people never get over it even though in practice they can land their accelerated 2nd serve 9/10 times... The fastest way to overcome this is to just play through it. Expect losses by double-faulting. Keep losing until you get mentally tougher and your match play results are closer to practice results. You can't win until you lose.
That is correct, alot of club rec players practice without instruction and just go out and hit balls and think they can just teach themselves and copy the pros swings without knowing about the loading of the body kinetic chain then wonder why years later they are taking painkillers because their bodies are in pain because of continually hitting the ball around with using incorrect or poor swing mechanics there are some rec players out there who are stubborn they will not get the proper instruction to fix their bad swings and continue to insist to use incorrect or poor swing mechanics and continue to create issues for their bodies or develop injuries. When poor swing mechanics are used on the wrong body parts it results in developing strains or injuries. That is why we don't use poor swing mechanics when it comes to the serves or the groundstrokes or the overhead smash. Because we are loading kilos of G force energy weight onto the body when we drive around the ball in the court so we have to load it to the correct places.
A couple tips you didnt ask for: Fill a bag with some balls and practice your service motion. itll also help strengthen your shoulder. Warm up by literally just throwing balls. then stand at the service line and practice on pronating and getting that ball down. lasty your left arm isnt in the air nearly long enough. keep that left arm up and drive that (right arm) back elbow to your right hip. goodluck. . . im excited to watch your growth! Go whoop some ass in your Sunday set.
Hi there love your vids man...I switched too a pinpoint stance aka Rafael service motion and I haven't looked back.being a ex volleyball player it felt more natural too me especially getting the sequence correct in my mind and helped me explode into the serve.i bet basketball also brings both feet together for jumps etc.
Try and slow down ur swing relative to ur toss. Try and toss first then start the swing after the toss rather than at the same time and in order to do this u need to have a little bit of a higher toss but this way u can use the full momentum rather that move stop and then move again
That Vince Carter tip helped me a lot, i don't know why tbh, it don't make any sense to me. Last game my serve was shit and i just started thinking about finishing like vince carter and all my serve went in with lots of spin (but less power ) Good tip when you're having a bad day at the serve. Nice video bud
Better than using a basketball player for inspiration...go find videos (including slow motion) of Pete Sampras, server extraordinaire. He had that motion at the end of his serves more clearly than anyone else.
3:28, that's some serious power for a guy your level, you have an athletic build and probably would do great in any racket sport if you committed long enough
The main metric, if you can call it that, should be quality of the stroke. Practice makes permanent, not perfect. If you practice bad form 1000 times, it will just be that much harder to correct any form mistakes because those mistakes are going to feel 'right' to you.
In high level juniors they all have amazing ground strokes and have every shot, but a lot of the time, their biggest weakness tends to be their serve. Developing a serve is a long, slow progression. It seems you’ve been able to skip some of the beginning steps, but you should always go back to the fundamentals and break down your serve piece by piece SLOW. You don’t get a better, faster serve with fast reps, you need to break it down and do the basics before you progress to more advanced mechanics. Great progress, keep it up and you know what to do
1000 serves everyday is a recipe for injury. I'd tone it down to like 200 maximum. You don't have the looseness yet and the strength of small muscles pros work at to prevent injury.
It's too bad that we stray so many balls in the beginning, what a shame it would be if a shanked forehand would somehow hit the rollerbladress or pickleball player on the next court
I would watch out with doing this! You can get easily injured if you hit this many serves, you really shouldn't hit more than 100 a day. But your progression was crazy!
