I‘d love to see a video on how to warm up your serve just before a match. I often do not have enough time to practice my serve right before the match and have problems with my serve during my first service games.
Your video provides the most executable advice and in the most simplistic way. Im hooked and have already found success today with picking up the ball at the highest contact point, and with my footwork at catching the ball early. Great job man!
Another good video man. It's nice to see coaching on TH-cam emphasise tennis is first and foremost about throwing from the shoulder. Only thing missing is an exercise for the ball toss, which is what gets most people (myself included).

Watching this again….I came across it a few days ago and have used it as a warmup and drill progression the past two days and I am seeing really nice results! One thing I noticed was that the abbreviated motion from the trophy position has also helped me improve my toss consistency in the full service motion! Wasn’t expecting that benefit. Also, it looks cool when I bomb serves with what looks like an effortless motion :) And finally…the back leg only drill is really quite challenging! Well done!

Great video! I am suffering a lot to get a good serve, it is my worst shot. These tips are really helpful.
Grear serving drills and advise about "snapping the serve" at the highest contact point instead of the dreaded "push motion". I'd love for you to talk about the "tossing arm" as simple as it seems many players have poor toss consistency and placement, it's also a huge key to serving well. Your serving arm has to react to what you do with the toss. Can you show any drills for tossing the ball and getting the timing right along with the serving arm? Thanks Karue! I have been experiencing some inner elbow tendon pain as well and then after making adjustments now tricep tendon pain when practicing serving. I will try these drills to strengthen my shoulder and mechanics..
Don't forget to massage and release your biceps tension after tennis sessions. I experienced inner elbow (golfers elbow) pain for years, untill I realized it was bicep tension/shortening that caused it.
Well Richard, you need to workout your internal rotation shoulder muscle and external rotation shoulder muscle by doing some eccentric exercises. The drills will fix your mechanics but like any sport , they will become overused so you have to work them out outside tennis for them to last. Its a constant battle to keep up with exercise combine with practice drills that work on the mechanics. Just dont want you to think that the good mechanics is all you need to avoid injury. Thats just not true.. I would challenge anyone to prove me wrong. Thats why all sport have a work out sessions and also practice.
Nice video. Can u pls make one on practical tips to improve the overhead.. esp smashes in dubs where we don't hv time and need to hit the ball straight from the air w.o allowing it to drop

Great video as usual. You and your pupil both have the elbow joint at 90 degrees and you seem to supinate (which makes the racquet move above head, and the racquet drop is done from a shoulder stretch, instead of arm move as people are led to believe. When your elbow moves around, which moves the shoulder and then extend fully on your arms do you pronate. A video of this will be perfect to show breakdown.

I am staying grounded on the serve (I am bending my knees but not lifting off the ground). 3.5 level and 80 mph first serve. Is it still important to lift both heels off the ground at trophy position? Feel more comfortable staying flat footed as in the drill at 7:00 ... Is there much benefit to lifting the heels at trophy position?
Oh my god finally somebody who understands how throwing a football can improve your serve. I was a former pitcher in baseball and always liked playing catch with a football (hand egg) just for fun. And wouldn’t you know my serve is way better than it should be for somebody my size.
This is SO GOOD, I took notes!! Can't wait to try this out next time I'm out hitting. I always send the ball long, and I know its because I'm not relaxing my arm/wrist. I reset by doing figure 8s with the racket through the serve motion, then tossing a few balls and letting my racket flow through contact--the ball drops in every time. Then when I go back to the full serve motion, I'm able to get a lot more power with less effort. Westly is tall, so I don't feel so bad, lol. It's just mechanics. Love the new HQ cams too!!!
When hitting this first serve should you hit as flat as you can or should you try and add just a bit of spin to control the serve? If I try to hit it perfectly flat I feel like I get easy power but I`am not always making a lot of 1st serves in. Should I feel like I am adding a bit of topspin with the help of my legs or should I just focus more on the angle of the racket face at the moment of contact to improve my percentage? I watching from Kuala Lumpur. Serve has been my problem . I hit it as hard as i can , but the impact is just like a push , on my 1st serve . My 2nd serve , i slow down the speed just to get ball in This is a good video , i will try to implement this technic , maybe i can improve.

One interesting thing comparing your student's motion and yours is that he tosses the ball higher than you do, and I think he tosses it too high. When you do it, the ball peaks very close to your contact point (the ball stays within the screen), and so it stays in that hitting window longer. Your student tosses it much higher than his contact point (the ball goes off the screen), so he has to catch a ball that is going fast (and accelerating) towards the ground, making it difficult to have a consistent contact point, and therefore ending up pushing too often instead of snapping.
@@KaruesellHQ agree, overall his technique is nice and fluid but i really think contolling that toss is going to help him sync his nice upper body motion and his legs. it looks like he loads a lot with his legs but his extension towards snapping up at contact is a bit mistimed.
Such a great drill I initially saw about 5 years ago by Doug King. Since then, I’ve seen it demonstrated about a half dozen times by various high-level coaches. The only problem is that I can’t do it. Not even close. I understand the importance of a high-con tat point and staying closed without opening up too early and keeping the lower body quiet to emphasize the arm motion. I know about getting the toss to arc a little to the left and I try to keep my arm as loose as possible as I accelerate up through the contact. I still can’t do it. I can’t get that “pop”. I have cried in the courts out of frustration. I have rewatched the videos hundreds of times. I have prayed to God. I cried some more and all I have to show after literally hundreds of hours and thousands of balls is a garbage push with a useless slice and no pop. Can you please help me. Please. I really love this game, but I have had such a hard rind learning it. My forehand is unpredictable and sails long all the time. I don’t really have a backhand. I can’t volley because as soon as I run to the net, the ball just passes me. I’ve been playing for 6 years and I’m only a 2.25. I’m 46 years old and not althketic at all, but I’m not obese. I’m just a bad athlete and that makes me so sad. Any advice that you give me, I will do. Promise. You seem like a good guy. Thanks for your time and your wonderful videos. ps. I can’t throw a ball. From the baseline, I cant throw a tennis ball over the net. I’m very embarrassed.
Hey there I feel you. Though I do take pride in how I have worked on my athleticism and technique, there are things in tennis that I just don't get, at least not as quickly as other people. What I realized after my frustrations (which almost made me quit tennis all together) is that learning doesn't necessarily mean effort. Of course usually more hours on the court or more sweat shed equate to more progress, but that's far from the full story. Sometimes after a plateau, I realized that I didn't gain a ton of new abilities but rather figured out how to apply the right skills at the right time. Other times I found out that I simply had the wrong idea about how something should be done. I imagine that my experience is pretty applicable. Tennis is so complicated, so it makes sense that there isn't a straightforward path towards success. Keep going.
Great lesson! Very interesting to see that a no-jump, and one-leg serve are very fast too. I'd estimate they were about 85% the speed of your full serve, which is probably still >100mph.
Ach. It looks so inviting from cold, rainy Washington state. I'm 100% certain my technique, and not the temperature, keeps me from hitting the big serve. Mine bounce twice before hitting the back wall, even if the first bounce is a slide on a wet court. Don't have a football, but will try your progressions. Thanks, dude

Hi Karue. I'm sure you get asked all the time but can you tell me if you're still using the 95 or if you switched to the 98. What strings do you use out of curiosity?
Yes youre correct. But id say the Americans' *if they have good serves it is due to baseball; which is more popular (Slice = slider; Kick serve = curveball etc.). The overhand throwing motion. Your football throw needs work. For one; keep a strong "Braced" front side (like tennis); Second: the the balls' nose needs to flip over. Meaning the front tip of the ball has to point to opposite way before turning over (like a serve; the racquet needs to point down behind the back; before pointing-whiping up.) Third, if you want to QB good, the index finger needs to be the last finger that comes off the ball. Which I think is an interesting point: After watching Fed backhand, and seeing his string-bow use of his back index fingers on the handle (pulling back and creating counter tension); I am now realizing the truth of finger tension in tennis; and possibly in all "throwing" mechanics. And where that pressure of the fingers can have drastic affects on the racquet speed. Or the football rotation.
So much of the quality of the serve, specially 1st serves, is directly related to the quality of the toss. When the technique is already locked and loaded the toss will always remain the only variable. Most tennis pros focus a lot on the motion of the hitting arm of the student and neglect the toss. Usefull stuff to warmup with. fyi you talk about nice and relax swing w/o legs in drill #3 and yours student is doing all of his serves legs lov drop and sounds of his body asuming he is highly tensed.
Throwing a football probably helps increase dynamic shoulder external rotation ROM. The weight at just under 1 lb. is enough to have an effect but not enough to have much risk. Some pitchers will throw a 2 lb. ball to get the effect but there is risk involved.

How often would you recommend a serious player work on their serve?
One interesting thing comparing your student's motion and yours is that he tosses the ball higher than you do, and I think he tosses it too high. When you do it, the ball peaks very close to your contact point (the ball stays within the screen), and so it stays in that hitting window longer. Your student tosses it much higher than his contact point (the ball goes off the screen), so he has to catch a ball that is going fast (and accelerating) towards the ground, making it difficult to have a consistent contact point, and therefore ending up pushing too often instead of snapping.

@@KaruesellHQ agree, overall his technique is nice and fluid but i really think contolling that toss is going to help him sync his nice upper body motion and his legs. it looks like he loads a lot with his legs but his extension towards snapping up at contact is a bit mistimed.
Such a great drill I initially saw about 5 years ago by Doug King. Since then, I’ve seen it demonstrated about a half dozen times by various high-level coaches. The only problem is that I can’t do it. Not even close. I understand the importance of a high-con tat point and staying closed without opening up too early and keeping the lower body quiet to emphasize the arm motion. I know about getting the toss to arc a little to the left and I try to keep my arm as loose as possible as I accelerate up through the contact. I still can’t do it. I can’t get that “pop”. I have cried in the courts out of frustration. I have rewatched the videos hundreds of times. I have prayed to God. I cried some more and all I have to show after literally hundreds of hours and thousands of balls is a garbage push with a useless slice and no pop. Can you please help me. Please. I really love this game, but I have had such a hard rind learning it. My forehand is unpredictable and sails long all the time. I don’t really have a backhand. I can’t volley because as soon as I run to the net, the ball just passes me. I’ve been playing for 6 years and I’m only a 2.25. I’m 46 years old and not althketic at all, but I’m not obese. I’m just a bad athlete and that makes me so sad. Any advice that you give me, I will do. Promise. You seem like a good guy. Thanks for your time and your wonderful videos.
ps. I can’t throw a ball. From the baseline, I cant throw a tennis ball over the net. I’m very embarrassed.
Hey there I feel you. Though I do take pride in how I have worked on my athleticism and technique, there are things in tennis that I just don't get, at least not as quickly as other people. What I realized after my frustrations (which almost made me quit tennis all together) is that learning doesn't necessarily mean effort. Of course usually more hours on the court or more sweat shed equate to more progress, but that's far from the full story. Sometimes after a plateau, I realized that I didn't gain a ton of new abilities but rather figured out how to apply the right skills at the right time. Other times I found out that I simply had the wrong idea about how something should be done. I imagine that my experience is pretty applicable. Tennis is so complicated, so it makes sense that there isn't a straightforward path towards success. Keep going.

Great lesson! Very interesting to see that a no-jump, and one-leg serve are very fast too. I'd estimate they were about 85% the speed of your full serve, which is probably still >100mph.
Ach. It looks so inviting from cold, rainy Washington state. I'm 100% certain my technique, and not the temperature, keeps me from hitting the big serve. Mine bounce twice before hitting the back wall, even if the first bounce is a slide on a wet court. Don't have a football, but will try your progressions. Thanks, dude

Yes youre correct. But id say the Americans' *if they have good serves it is due to baseball; which is more popular (Slice = slider; Kick serve = curveball etc.). The overhand throwing motion.
Your football throw needs work. For one; keep a strong "Braced" front side (like tennis); Second: the the balls' nose needs to flip over. Meaning the front tip of the ball has to point to opposite way before turning over (like a serve; the racquet needs to point down behind the back; before pointing-whiping up.)
Third, if you want to QB good, the index finger needs to be the last finger that comes off the ball. Which I think is an interesting point:
After watching Fed backhand, and seeing his string-bow use of his back index fingers on the handle (pulling back and creating counter tension); I am now realizing the truth of finger tension in tennis; and possibly in all "throwing" mechanics. And where that pressure of the fingers can have drastic affects on the racquet speed. Or the football rotation.
So much of the quality of the serve, specially 1st serves, is directly related to the quality of the toss. When the technique is already locked and loaded the toss will always remain the only variable. Most tennis pros focus a lot on the motion of the hitting arm of the student and neglect the toss. Usefull stuff to warmup with. fyi you talk about nice and relax swing w/o legs in drill #3 and yours student is doing all of his serves legs lov drop and sounds of his body asuming he is highly tensed.
Throwing a football probably helps increase dynamic shoulder external rotation ROM. The weight at just under 1 lb. is enough to have an effect but not enough to have much risk. Some pitchers will throw a 2 lb. ball to get the effect but there is risk involved.
