The Algorithm asked me if I wanted to watch a video on hat making at 2am. Turns out I did and I'm glad I did - watched another dozen episodes since. Fantastic channel, Eric! I love the way you talk to your guests, how you engage and show us how talented and special they are. I can't wait to see more.

Just recently retired to The Lost Sierra, cattle country north of Lake Tahoe. My stockbroker said if you're to be the Laird of an estancia, you need a custom hat, and he sent me your video link of Nate. A week later I found myself flying to Texas Hill Country to meet this wonderful craftsman. I have a very large head (63) and it was nice to hear Nate and Kerrie talk not only about size, but about skin complexion, and shape of head and stature of build, and how it all comes together with the "right hat". When I found out I was 345th in line, and about one year out, I ordered two. One a Lizard Head Cattleman's (my new Sunday Going To Meeting Hat) and a working cowboys' GUS for everyday wear. Thank you for bringing me to know these wonderful people.

He seems like such a good person. He asks the expert what to do, rather than trying to flex his knowledge. I appreciate that, as I'm sure many of us view this as a learning experience.
Super respectful and highlights this gentleman in regards to his trade. Thank you for this upload!
This Hatmaker is amazing. Taking his time to instruct the host with a calming patience. He seems like such a great teacher. He's so particular and patient, id like to buy him a beer and just talk for a while.

I work in medicine, and I'm at a point where I *need* to transition into something else, so I've started a small business making rugs. I don't make the money doing it that I do working in a hospital, but I'm having fun and I'm not stressed out while making rugs. Working in medicine provided a future for my kids, and I'm grateful that I've had the privilege of helping people in need, but I really want to spend my time doing something that I enjoy now.

If you wear hats there is nothing better then a custom one built just for you . I had my first custom hat made in 1973 and have been fortunate enough to have had six other ones made for me from three different Hatters since then . They all went through the same process used here and it’s really cool to go in and have the final shape and band done to put that extra touch to it .I am always amazed how durable they are and easy it is to reshape them at home once you learn the techniques. Any time I’m passing through an area that has a hatter I stop because you never know when you will need another one . Great video

I ended up here chasing the rabbit down a hole 😁 I’m glad I did.. this was great..
handcrafted stuff is always fascinating to learn about and it’s always better STUFF, because each thing is individual and given the time for the quality..
I started making jewelry and other pieces over 30 years ago.. and I really enjoyed selling to people directly and making the custom orders.. I only repeated a piece ONCE, and only because I was the owner of and wearing the original and a good customer really really loved it 😁.. so.. technically, I’ve never made the same thing twice for anyone else.. lol
    And
People always have a special experience or appreciation for something made just for THEM and to the specifications THEY wanted.. those are the pieces that are special, and usually get picked up most..
A one of a kind thing IS special.. 😊😊 especially when it brings you joy..

This was great, I actually have a vintage 1900 buffalo felt stetson that was passed down to me by my great grandpa. I love that hat and wear all the time. I've had it reshaped twice, and repaired once at a hatsmith in Montana. It's truly the art of arts.

I wish we still had hatmakers like that in Brazil, It's hard to find a really good hat that can withstand the weather such as rain and sometimes snow. Also having a custom piece is nothing like just buying one from the shelf

I'm sort of surprised there aren't any traditional hatmakers in Brazil. You might want to reach out to Nate, maybe he can help! Thank you

You can buy cowboy hat plastic covers. Wear mine over both straw and felt hats in wet weather. Just take them off when going indoors. Oh yeah, be sure to shake the rain or snow off them too.

@@tonycostello4663 thanks for the advice my friend, but that wouldn't work for me. I can't really find a way of saying this without sounding rude, so just know that it isn't my intention
I don't use "cowboy hats", and the plastic covers wouldn't work, I want a hat that's as weatherproof as my dad's old Cury 100% Rabbit fur. My hat is a work tool, I need to leave for work early in the morning knowing that just like my poncho, my hat will keep me dry in the case of an abrupt change in the weather. Carrying the cover on my tack would be another piece of nuisance to be dangling and annoying me and my horse

This is thee best hat making video on TH-cam. Lovely introduction. Engaging and a great ending with the talk about a sense of slight anxiety of wearing a hat, and going for it.

I grew up with some of the Funmakers, they were Very Talented Folks. One time my science teacher asked Sherman, Nates brother how they got there last name Funmaker and Sherman said that was there Job and they have proven this to be true throughout the years. Wonderful People.

What a talented man. There’s something in the soul that says stop working for the man on the 8-5 and do something that makes you happy. Hat making is something that just seems awesome. Great video

The Last hat in the try on phase looked great on you. I think it is more of an outdoor rugged look. Your final hat is more of a going on the town style.
