Man, modern man, is now separated not only from God, but, first and foremost, from himself, from his inner, true "self". It is this weakening, or estrangement, in relationship between the two selves in man that needs to be cured or healed first: the problem of the alienation of the accidental self from the essential "Self". In other words, the "vertical" alienation and the "horizontal" alienation need to be addressed simultaneously. The weakening of the vertical causes the weakening and eventually the collapse of the horizontal relationships of man. After all, modernity if it means anything, is "a way of drowning into nothingness' as a contemporary sage has said.
