You know, I had originally named my interior design style "Grandma used Grandpa's life insurance money to renovate the house but kept all her old s***", but "Grand Millennial" sounds much classier.
I don’t know whether it’s just a British thing to have coloured bathroom suites in renovation projects e.g. pink or avocado suites - but if you could get your hands on one of those and do a monochromatic makeover, I’d love to see it!!! Even a virtual makeover / mood board / design
@@aell6965 me and some other youtubers actually made some dark academia diy decor ideas in a playlist - but I agree Drew should make one decor item from each style in a video!
"Monochromatic" is a useful aesthetic and can be quite beautiful when done correctly. A friend of mine has a VERY eclectic personal style when it comes to collecting furniture (Victorian chairs, MCM sofa, Louis XV bedroom, etc.) To tame all of this mess, he reupholstered EVERYTHING in the same cream-colored raw silk, painted a lot of the wood pieces black, and then painted every wall in his house dark taupe. The effect was fantastic. His place went from thrift-shop-chaos to magazine-perfect almost instantaneously.
Personally I think mixing & matching is the way to go. Some design styles I think only work in magazines, so taking various elements of multiple design styles is much more practical (assuming the mixing is done well).
This is something Emily Henderson talked about in her first book, I believe. She speaks about different basic styles and then about how you can mix styles to create cohesive looks. I'm too "all over the place" to have a truly curated home, but I can sometimes stop myself when making a decision and rationalise. 👍🏻
Having inherited many beautiful antiques and art work, our home definitely has a mix of vintage and grand millennial. I love wallpaper, and have used it in my kitchen, dining room and bathrooms. For us this means having a comfortable home with beautiful pieces we are proud to own. I like to craft, so I'm so thankful for this channel.... because your DIY projects always have a sophisticated look to them!!
@@susanmulvey6311 Thank you so much Susan. I used a French provincial style wallpaper, and after many years I still love it. My husband and I both lost our parents too early in our marriage. But, we can remember them through their furniture, art and china etc. Now I am slowly giving pieces away to my children and their spouses!!
@@Patti-1962 Your children will treasure those items! That’s what people use to do, hand down family furniture, etc.! I have two antique pieces from my dad and everyone always comments on them. I wish I had wallpapered rooms, but I’ll just admire other peoples, in magazines and utube. 😉
Bibliophile here, so I am very partial to Dark Academia. Monochromatic would be my next favorite. I collect things so minimalist designs don’t really work for me, however, maximalist might be a tad much. Very informative video thank you.

Vintage Revival is my favorite, but I also love Dark Academia for all the books. My house is so small and the lighting is so poor that attempting Dark Academia at home would make it look and feel like I lived in a cave, but I love it in other people's homes!
I totally agree. I love how dark academia looks in other spaces.. but not in mine. I don't think I could live in a dark space all the time. It seriously brings down my mood. That being said, I have seen so many pictures of dark academia in other's spaces and it looks amazing!
@@kyliecrawford1301 SAME. I will always dream of my magical library with two-story high ceilings, which I would totally do in a Dark Academic style, but until that day arrives... I will live those dreams through other people's spaces. :)

So...I'm a 90 year old MAXIMILIST lady living with my 90 year old handsome Prince for 70 years. If that alone isnt amazing enough....he is a MINIMALIST! Chinoiserie??? I’m seeing it a lot and I (oddly enough) like it. I’m doing black kitchen cabinets and neutral modern furniture with color in the rugs, curtains, and accent furniture. Loving the lacquered dressers. I consider it Modern Chinoiserie chic. I also love a dramatic “powder room”.
My boyfriend and I are in the middle of re-designing the house, and the bedroom is like a mix of several of these styles! We're calling it "moody eclectic" but we went with "dark knight" by sherwin williams for the walls (super dark blue), there's a beautiful stained wood sliding barn door into the bathroom that came with the house, we've got a dark brown leather headboard, we're going to add dark velvet curtains coming down from the vaulted ceilings, a beautiful patterened cowhide rug on the floor, some luxurious looking sheets on the bed, we just bought this glamorous chandelier, and we're going to have some really eclectic, dark art on the walls. Sort of like a dark glam academia meets dark boho (leather/wood/rattan/plants) - Love that you dove into these styles!
I enjoyed this video I guess I have elements of many of these styles as I have been married for 47 years and we have had seven homes. Things change for me to match the style of the home, but certain things that I love stand the test of time. I have lived in two Victorian houses, a country ranch, a new modern build, a small town ranch, a large Craftsman ranch...in that order, and now a 1965 stone cottage. If you develop your own style you can adapt.
Our small apartment in Japan is a mixture of these different styles, and it prevents us being locked into a single style, because that’d feel constricting. It’s just me and my wife, so we can have fun with it. Our living space is a mix of mid-century industrial with my work area, plus my wife’s light academia on the other side with the couch and shelves. Our bedroom is more traditional, almost like a Parisian hotel with brass and warm neutrals. Our kitchen is a mix of farmhouse and boho with light wood, plants, art prints, etc. Always evolving and never boring!
I love you explaining this. I know this s an older vid and you prob won't see this comment but I think all your fans would love if you could use a room in your new home, at least unitl you finish decorating the whole house, as a show room for diff styles. You could let us vote on the theme, take us thrifting, do a DYI, even use pieces borrowed from other rooms and show us a DA study, a new age mediation room, a boho bedroom etc. Thank you for always putting out new, useful and stylish content. We love you, Drew !!!
Great video! I really love that thrifting is becoming more and more popular and your videos on that are so inspiring. I’m moving into a new house soon and I have a goal of buying everything second hand. I would love to see another “explainer” video from you talking about how you plan the interior design of a space and it would be so cool if you would challenge yourself to do a makeover with 100% second hand/thrifted items (the exception being paint and such). I think it’s really challenging to do since you need to find a couch that matches your style, fits the room and the colors and your budget. So what is the best way to go? Start with the furniture and make the paint match that? Or pick a color scheme and go thrifting with that in mind? Hope this makes sense and that you would consider a video on it.
Loved this video. You seem much more calm which is refreshing to see. I think I've seen most of these styles lately but the monochromatic really caught my eye. I love the walls and trim being the same color when the walls are flat and the trim and doors are glossy. 🤗
I've never had a certain theme in my home. Having grown up a military brat, we moved around a lot. My dad was American. My mum was English. I love happy colors, yet in the fall & winter, I like things to look warner. I live the beach, Hawaii, mtns, family photos, and memorabilia. So you can probably imagine what my home looks like. I love your videos. And really liked that you said people can have more than one style. It doesn't matter what what you do, it's always perfect. ❤
This was so helpful! I’m living alone for the first time and I’m having such a hard time figuring out my design style! This video introduced me to some new ones I’ve never heard of before! More videos like this please! Thanks Drew! ❤️
This is such a good, well thought and planned video. Loved it. This is definitely one I'll come back to many times. I call my style "eclectic maximalism" because I can never choose one specific style and as long as they go together, I'm good.
I'm the same way !!!!! Oh my gosh. My space looks chaotic and almost like a store which ok its not BAD it's just over done, too much is going on and it's a mix of things - I'm trying to scale back a little and just really let pieces shine
My goal is a variant of Spanish revival. That would be a style I'd love you to go over! Still popular in the southwest but hard to find in stores. White walls, dark wood, terracotta and colorful art. We have a TON of books and I am an academic, but I like it light, not dark, so light academic? 😅 White walls with colorful art and comfortable furniture. Probably some version of eclectic but with that Spanish/Mediterranean vibe.
I love the more educational videos like this!! I love learning about interior design. I would love to see some dorm room diys or makeovers in the future too!!
One thing I'd add to the dark acedemia description would be the acedemic part - should draw inspo from boarding schools or universities. Like, the campus office of an eccentric professor. Things like textbooks, beakers, maps, globes, apothecary cabinets, old "artifacts" etc. seem to be a part of the aesthetic.
Me, danish, drooling over 'Maximalism'! Yaay! Never knew there was a word for it! So happy I now have a 'Word' or like a 'Tag' to make my inspo-search way easier!
Granny chic? I'm looking around my living room right now and I realize there is a term for the way I decorate. I have a mix of second hand furniture and family heirlooms that looks cozy yet a little rustic. I have a slip cover, {navy blue}, on my second hand sofa and changed the covers on the pillows. I can't handle the all white homes. I need color, texture and patterns in my life! I love this video!! You have made all these 'types' of decor understandable. Thank you.
I’m getting ready to watch the video but wanted to comment because you mentioned Wabi Sabi in the description. There’s a YT channel called Wabi Sabi and it’s a young couple with a new baby in Canada that for the last several years has been renovating an old farmhouse! I think it was their grandparents home. I love the channel and his editing is amazing! Just wanted to share in case someone might be interested in checking out their channel.
Outstanding as usual. Thanks so much for sharing info on Wabi-Sabi and Japandi! I love these. ALSO, thanks for introducing me to Maison Trouvaille!! Love this.
I’m moving into a new apartment soon so I’ve been thinking about how I can decorate my space. This video has been SUPER helpful! I love the look of danish pastel and wabi sabi. I’ve always been gravitating towards post modern design as well which is something I learned from Alex Gater on YT, another interior designer.
Having my Fox fix this week today as I was very busy last week and just learned that you're sick and won't post this week. Hope you get better soon and don't worry about posting, we love and support you. Take care!
This gives me so much hope, Drew! I am one of your older viewers (prob. closer to your parents' ages), and I inherited some antiques that I love and want to keep and that have great memories attached to them, too. But I am slipping into boring and granny over here, so the idea of of keeping them and having a modern space is thrilling. I still have no idea how to pull it off, really, but this new insight is exciting. Thanks. Loved this video.
You said exactly what I was thinking. I'm a Cusp Creature. Everything from movies & music, clothing styles & now design has been an integral part of my childhood as referenced from my grandparents & my adulthood as a hippie from the 60s/70s. I love the way Drew explained this because it really just means that everything old is new again
If you 'shop your house', moving pieces from here to there, it might renew your appreciation for them eg, I have a low buffet, I'm planning to store my books in.
I love this video Drew, so informative. I must be totally eclectic because I identify with aspects from a lot of these styles. You explained and illustrated these styles wonderfully. Thank you so much.
I'm a design nightmare. I love several decor styles and as a result I have a different style in each room. My living room is more coastal but my kitchen is danish pastal. My bedroom is vintage revival and our 2 stairways are maximalism (lots of art and pictures floor to ceiling on one side and a solid color on the opposite wall). The rec room is dark academia. I love wabisabi and japandi. My son's bedroom is Japandi.
Drew, I have an idea for video. I would love to hear where your interest for interior design came from, did you finish any course on that subject or is it just your passion and if so how do you educate yourself. I really admire your work and your talent ❤
OMG thank you for the knowledge and the new phrase I'm adding to my Pinterest searches. I've been trying to come up with and search for decor styles for awhile to somewhat decorate my current apartment but more so to decor my hopefully future one. My taste has varied over the years from gothic, to possibly eclectic, to glam, to romantic, and I like certain elements from them but never one entirely. I love dark colors but not as dark as a full goth, I love books and Victorian styles but not fully, I loved secretary desk and apothecary drawers but had no way to know how to combine everything into a cohesive look until now. I already looked up more dark academia pics and have found so many I love and now know exactly how I want to decorate and can incorperate all the cool and fun decor items I have saved or favorited on my design journey. Thank you so much for showing the different designs they make a great starting off point for those of us who would love to decorate but don't know what to search to get inspiration pics. I would love to see you maybe go more in depth into these like maybe places to shop and maybe how would you decorate say a living room in each of these styles. Thanks Lone Fox you live up to the smart as a fox motto.
Yes! I love vintage revival! I love mixing old & new, especially furniture . I have items that I've collected throughout the years mixed with my modern sectional. My modern bed with my antique dresser and vintage quilts ❣️💯
I love Tulum and the style of Tulum. It's not my style at home but I love it, cause I love the vibe in Tulum. I'm more of a Maximalism/Grand Millennial style. I've been collecting for years, now I'm trying to put it all together and make it renter friendly... Try that with gallery walls in every room. I'm also a furniture painter and painted a dresser inspired by a Monet painting Red Water Lilies. Anyway, love watching your channel.

Loved the three makeovers. My fav was the second one...the 1950s home. All the updates were beautiful.
Casual and educated AF!! You’re the best
I loved all the descriptions & inspo photos that you used throughout each style. I’m really drawn to the maximalism & danish pastel styles! 😍
I really liked this "casual" style! Thanks for sharing about different design styles.
Vintage revival = eclectic. I love your new names for these tried-and-true textbook design titles.
I love this type of videos where your more relaxed and chatty. Keep them coming Drew!
I’m so obsessed with wabi sabi and japandi lately!
Me, danish, drooling over 'Maximalism'! Yaay! Never knew there was a word for it! So happy I now have a 'Word' or like a 'Tag' to make my inspo-search way easier!
I’m still stuck on bohemian lol. I got a late start though. Now this video makes me want to change everything lol
I WANT YOUR COFFEE TABLE DESIGN BOOK ASAP!!! 🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️
Academia can be dark.
I love what you do--you incorporate so much into each video. "Asian Light" design is my fav.
Outstanding as usual. Thanks so much for sharing info on Wabi-Sabi and Japandi! I love these. ALSO, thanks for introducing me to Maison Trouvaille!! Love this.
When I think of Danish Pastel, can't help but think of Marzia. Her pottery, clothes, jewelry, it really gives me that bubbly summery vibe
I was thinking while watching this that combining elements of wabi sabi & danish pastel could be so beautiful ✨
This was excellent. Great overveiw. Thanks so much!
I’m super excited about Japandi!
Love Wabi Sabi. Thanks for introducing me!
Drew is so knowledgeable and creative. I enjoyed it.
Having my Fox fix this week today as I was very busy last week and just learned that you're sick and won't post this week.
Hope you get better soon and don't worry about posting, we love and support you. Take care!
Can we get a video on your top 10 interior designers??
Thank you so much! I had no idea what to name my home interior style but dark academia is it!
Wabi Sabi is my favorite. My living room has that vibe
Perfect… thanks Drew, I love how you also stated how advance some styles need to be achieved. It’s not easy.
Awe Drew I was smiling through the whole video! You're such a wonderful communicator and so talented. Wishing you the very best this spring :)
I loveeee Wabi Sabi + Japandi
Love this video, learned about a few and was happy to listen to someone who was not judgmental on other peoples taste and very knowledgeable.
I love the font you are using, Quincy CF. I believe it is gorgeous!
Yes! I love vintage revival! I love mixing old & new, especially furniture . I have items that I've collected throughout the years mixed with my modern sectional. My modern bed with my antique dresser and vintage quilts ❣️💯
My fave has to be the Vintage Revival! 😍
Danish Pastel is absolutely everything I’ve ever wanted in a home
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! As a Showroom Display Designer, I need inspo ALL THE TIME! This is such a GREAT vid! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Lone Fox for sharing the different styles, love the maximalism…that is my favorite…💕
Cute interior design Thumbs up Always 💖The person who is reading this comment, I wish you great success, health , love and happiness 💕
With stickers, your way is excellent, I use vinegar, it’s magic! I could be your grandma I never miss your episodes. Love ya♥️
Love your videos, your personality alone is so uplifting!
Dear Drew. You are not only a decorator, DIY'r Genius, but you are also an amazing teacher. You are so clear, fluent, knowledgeable and of course so interesting. I learned soo much today. Thanks for this video and just thanks for being you!! We never ever need a break from you!
Have a Wonderful Sunday!! 🤗
Love this style of monochromatic it’s way better than what I’ve seen in the past I would love to use it in my daughter’s bedroom!
Love this! Should do this often!
Thanks Lone Fox for helping to identify my style: Maximaliam meets dark academic with nods to Wabi-Sabi and New Millenial! Really enjoy your videos
I loved this video! Thanks for sorting it out...Decorating trends are melding together so much it is hard to tell what's what anymore! Can you start accepting videos of subscribers homes and
saying what you like and what can be improved? That would be so fun! I always think "I wonder what Drew would think of my space!"
I really needed this! I keep hearing these different names/styles tossed around and was really lost. Now I have a basic understanding. All the examples were so helpful in “getting” it. Thank you so much!
i LOVED that you used troye sivan's house in this, i was OBSESSED with that AD video
Dark academia is so stinkin beautiful!
