Thank you for this tutorial. I have just made two baskets and could not get vertical sides. I will try a bigger base, but I also notice in this video that you have a nested some baskets together, and the smaller ones also have vertical sides. I will want to learn how to make smaller baskets with vertical sides!

@@nancy-katharynmcgraw2669 Hi Nancy, I just start back a couple stitches , back stitch two stitches and continue forward… but I use a less than half bobbin when starting usually so then the thread back stitching is usually on the bottom and I then put in a full bobbin and most times it lasts me thru rest of basket. Hth. 😁😁😁😁

I've made one basket so far, using a different set of instructions. It turned out OK, but the sides are floppy and I'm not happy with how they look. Your method looks to be so much better. Going to make a second one now -- The "Kat" Basket. It will probably end up with a kitten sleeping in it.

I have been making rope bowls about 3 years now, but your tutorial has been very helpful in making the straight sides on any sewing machine. I have been using 4 different sewing machines, for different style rope bowls; your demonstration has been most helpful, especially your "cell phone method" to form the different angle degrees for the sides. Your video is superb and made me really want to try this.. i do have a doubt if the thread is not extremely tight, what can we do to make the thread tight and for the basket to hold its shape?
Do a little practice piece and see what stitch width and length works best for your rope and typically I find that a shorted distance between stitches makes a firmer basket but also the rope firmness plays a role too… I set my width at 6 and length at 2 on my machine and it seems to work best. The stitch length will give you more stitches per inch the smaller you go. I really think it depends on the rope. Also a good 40 or 50 weight thread helps too. , thank you for watching😁 hth
I loved this video! You are a very good teacher and I also learned a lot! Can you please tell me how you made the smallest of the 3 baskets you showed - what size base, etc did you use? I am a bit confused. I understood you to say that whatever height your machine is would be the smallest basket you could make if you want straight sides and not one that flares out. Thanks so much Janice, that smaller basket I think I did a 6 inch base so the angle had to sew more rounds at 45 degrees and also take off the side of my sewing machine to get it closer to 90 degrees while lifting at the same time… but yes 7.5 inch base will be much easier to get straighter sides for my sewing machine. You will see once you make a few. I have experimented with smaller bases and find I need at least 7 inches or more is best for me.

@@vanessajackson5595 at least 50 feet… you can get 100 ft bundles but look at the link in description , you get over 300 ft I think for less than $20.00 …that what I used for this basket…have fun , also get some good thread, 40 Wt cotton or polyester
Allow yourself a bit extra for practice and know that not all clothes line rope is the same, some softer some have different core…but the one I use in video was my fav at that point in my basket making…u may have to experiment with different cords until I find one u like…happy basket making Vanessa!😁😁

This an excellent tutorial, I am trying to follow step by step on my brother A150. Just a few questions: Is my brother A150 strong enough for these projects? I tried with normal thread and it’s not coming out neat and the thread breaks a lot and I am not sure if the product will last , do you mind sharing the type of thread you are using? I tried some upholstery threads and most of them seem too heavy for a domestic machine

The markings are on my stack of paper next to the sewing machine and are measured approx from the right side of presser foot and to the left. Please check description for cord link that I use from Amazon. It’s a lot of cord for very cheap price… this basket was probably 40 - 50 feet of 6 mm / 1/4 inch rope
Great tutorial! I have been looking for a sewing machine where its role is to simply sew. No quilting features, embroidery, etc. I noticed your machine is a Brother but could not see the model number. My concern with the rope process is the wear and tear on a machine. Any input would be appreciated.
My sewing machine is brother Strong and Tough hd531st… also , Singer has a heavy duty machine that you can purchase with extension table. My only issue with my machine is that her is no warning beep to let you know that presser foot is not down because of the thickness of my rope it seems like it is down when it is not. If you are wanting to make rope baskets it’s important that the sewing machine does a zigzag stitch…some industrial machines only straight stitch. Hope this was helpful. 😁😁
It does help, thank you. My serger, coverstitch, embroidery and current sewing machine are all Brother. Just typing what I have, you would think I am quite seasoned. Only on the embroidery machine. Your machine is not electronic right?

I am sorry I do not make larger basket at this time because they are a bit more difficult to guide thru the machine and keep at a 90 degree angle…

Please check description for cord link that I use from Amazon. It’s a lot of cord for very cheap price… this basket was probably 40 - 50 feet of 6 mm / 1/4 inch rope
Also, you can check your local hardware store for cotton clothesline… usually comes in 100 ft
Great tutorial! I have been looking for a sewing machine where its role is to simply sew. No quilting features, embroidery, etc. I noticed your machine is a Brother but could not see the model number. My concern with the rope process is the wear and tear on a machine. Any input would be appreciated.
My sewing machine is brother Strong and Tough hd531st… also , Singer has a heavy duty machine that you can purchase with extension table. My only issue with my machine is that her is no warning beep to let you know that presser foot is not down because of the thickness of my rope it seems like it is down when it is not.
If you are wanting to make rope baskets it’s important that the sewing machine does a zigzag stitch…some industrial machines only straight stitch.

It does help, thank you. My serger, coverstitch, embroidery and current sewing machine are all Brother. Just typing what I have, you would think I am quite seasoned. Only on the embroidery machine. Your machine is not electronic right?

@@Christiane24 Christine, somewhere around 6mm or 1/4 inch rope 40 or 50 yards … …also depends on how thin your rope is…thinner rope will need more
When you say 7-1/2”, is that the diameter of your circle?
Yes it is Marie. Just a note,. Starting with the 7 1/2 base usually ends up being at least an inch larger in diameter in the finished basket
