    Medallions having magic abilities like Din's Fire is amazing. Fusing Medallions into arrows is freaking incredible. That Fairy spell from Zelda II is fantastic, reminds me as well of controlling Seagulls in Wind Waker. This is so cool

    It would’ve been so cool if the medallions remained usable items like this in the final game. It’s like Link is actually channeling the sage powers! Would add a lot more sense to the medallion get text boxes that say “sage has added his/her power to your own!” Also, I can imagine that heavy application of each medallion would’ve originally been planned for each of their respective trials Inside Ganon’s Castle.

      As cool as they are, a part of me is glad for what we got instead.The elemental arrows wouldn't have had much use (they already kind of don't...) and we still got the functions of most of the spells in the base game. The ice spell really wouldn't add much, and the fairy spell would destroy everything.
      That said, I absolutely wouldn't blame anyone who tries to revisit the idea in a fangame or something. After all, the idea of the medallions representing spells is exactly the same as what happened in ALTTP with ITS medallions.

      if there was "elemental torches" (that required a corresponding elemental arrow to activate/douse) - the elemental arrows could have more uses for puzzles.

      @@Sc4r4byte not only the arrows you could make puzzles for the medallions like the one to open shadow tempel e.g. a puzzle where you need to freeze the water over and over again because the water is poison or something that you can not just swim because you would die without the ice medallion

      @@GarryDumblowski not realy like Sc4rbyte say you could make more element torches in the game you would need and about the fairy from the spirit medallion it would not break the game because i already write here you could make puzzle that need medallions so imagine we have oot but you could only enter the tempels in a specific order because you would need a medallion to open a way etc for the tempel e.g.
      Lets say we could enter forest and water tempel like normal but you cant go to other tempel
      Forest is the first tempel and the medallion have no need to open any other tempel but because thats the "base" tempel of adult link you get the ability to set teleport point in dungeons so a help for other tempel
      Water would give you the ice/water medallion and now we change something in the game you cant go to fire tempel because there would be a huge lava sea but you need the medallion of the water tempel to cool down the lava to make a stone bridge to cross over
      Fire medallion will open the shadow tempel
      Shadow medallion is the next change we will do, in the desert we cut the ghost who would help you from the game and now you would need the shadow medallion to walk to the desert because we have now ghosts or spirits in the desert that works like wallmasters you cant escape from so you would never came to the desert collossus without the shadow medallion
      Spirit will also be a change after we have all other medallions we will get the light medallion from zelda (OR we get another tempel) but now the change would be we dont have the bridge so you need the spirit medallion to enter ganondorfs castle and we do the next change in the castle navi can't help you in the ganondorf fight because of the evil energy so now the change would be navi can't help you in the castle so you can't use the ability of the spirit medallion but you could still use the spirit arrows in the castle and for the puzzles in the castle you wpuld need every element arow

      @@kevinshadow5470 Oh, no, I know exactly what you mean. They COULD absolutely make functionality for each of the arrows and the medallions, and they could absolutely use them for puzzles. The mechanics of Majora's Mask are enough alone to prove this.
      I'm mainly saying that, as the game got cut down for the final release, it makes sense that they would get removed, and I'm kind of happy with what they came up with instead. I mainly say this because there's more freedom to get items and beat dungeons in different orders.

    Shadow and wind arrows looked so cool, water (ice) medallion looked sick and very effective too. Spirit medallion looks kinda broken, as you easily could do stuff with that that the devs wouldn't want you to do as a player, so I can easily see why they scrapped that. Probably waaaay too much work to create boundaries for that ability. The game is already a masterpiece as it is, but I think they could have kept the idea of having the medallions as items. It's really neat in my opinion.

      If they had kept the medallions as abilities, then the line "and adds their power to yours" every time you get one wouldn't've been just metaphorical. I remember being so disappointed that you didn't actually gain anything from those medallions despite what the text claimed.

      @@sigurdtheblue Nah, it'd be awful for the game just by the fact that it could be theoretically used anywhere and would mean you could fly way high up and force the game to load in the entire map, in a game that was already pushing the N64 decently hard.
      Like I can just hear the N64 overheating trying to use that thing in some of the bigger rooms in the game.

      My plan is to make an ultimate version of oot, with all these things added back in. Not really a beta reconstruction, bc I wanna keep all the improvements that the final game brought... but just, make it even better.

    I always wished that the Medallions did something! The sages make such a big deal about adding their power to yours so it was disappointing when you didn't get anything gameplay-wise out of it. That said, I think that some of these abilities definitely blend together and OOT probably turned out tighter and more polished by not having them (64DD or not). Aside from Fairy which would have been dope, Spirit/Shadow seem kind of irrelevant (Deku Nut > Spirit and enemies are too weak for stealth to matter) and the Ice one basically serves the same purpose as Din's Fire. Having all the different arrow elements was probably also repetitive when they all appear to just add some damage aside from the ones that made it in (and even in the final game Ice Arrows are just a novelty locked behind a bonus dungeon).
    Of course this is extremely cool to see either way, thanks for the showcase ZFG!

    I feel like Link would be so perceived so differently today if OoT had these, what, 12? magic items in the full release. Like its commonplace for link to be given access to a couple particularly magic spell-like things a game, but he could have been known for magic and magic attacks as much as regular combat moving forwards if there was that much

      Magic was a big part of LInk's kit at the time, but it kind of became less a part of his character over time. In the original game and Link's Awakening he had a magic wand but there was no unique functionality to it, it was just a rather good long range weapon. Zelda II definitely had link at his most mage like with a tonne of spells, though most combat was still designed around the Sword. A Link to the Past had its three medallions, Bombos, Ether and Quake, they also appeared in Four Swords Adventure (though only as things you find and not stuff Link can always do). And then there's Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask with its fairy spells and magic arrows, Link at his second most magical after Zelda II. It's after that early era that it stopped being popular. The Wind Waker was the last time Link had a dedicated Magic Meter. Oracle of Seasons, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hour Glass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword and Tri Force Heroes didn't feature any magic items at all. Oracle of Ages had the Cane of Somaria which is kind of like magic and Four Swords/The Minish Cap had the Gnat Hat for shrinking, things that would probably use magic if they were in a game with it. A Link Between Worlds had a stamina system that was kind of like the old magic meter but no real magic weapons, unless you want to count the Tornado Rod. Breath of the Wild is really the first time in a long time there were actual spells Link could perform with its Sheikah slate stuff. I'd say you're right that if Link had been more magical in Ocarina of Time then it could have influenced the future design of the series for quite a long time.

      Kind of makes me wonder how many things were intentionally dumbed down after Space World because people playing the demos just didn't pick up on the mechanics. For 1997, there's a lot of complex ideas that were nothing kind anything available at the time.

    Love the sfx on the shadow arrows and they look great too. With how much hate the ice arrows get for being pretty useless though it kind of makes sense why they cut half of the elemental arrows. Would have been difficult to have practical uses for all of them, and might have even been annoying if dungeons required use of a lot of different types.

      Shadow arrows could have had armor piercing. Spirit arrows could power switches. And ice arrows are wonderful in Majora so we could just get those.

      i guess all the elemental arrows could have practical uses while light, spirit, and shadow arrows are used in their respective boss fights or mini bosses… or maybe light arrows should be shock arrows like botw and “spirit” arrows are just light arrows. Or maybe you just get the light bow after the spirit temple like the light bow in botw and it consumes magic to balance it

      @@tommywhyso6299 the light arrows could have maybe worked by flipping the gravity upside down if a torch was lit by them like in majora's mask so link could walk on ceilings, the spirit arrows maybe regain link's health or magic by killing enemies with them or by lighting a torch with them, the light medallion could maybe work like naru's love, as well as the dark medallion making link invisible to enemies the dark arrows maybe could make every thing and enemy visible that is invisible by lightning a torch, also the ice arrows maybe could freeze water like in majora's mask

    I love that a tiny bit of Dins fires origins is actually in the final game! in the area before the shadow temple where you use dins fire it has the fire medallion symbol (I think this was removed in 3ds though)

    Spirit medallion was way too OP, Navi flies insanelly fast and on top of that it allows you to teleport to her location, no wonder it was cut from the final version and sensibly nerfed when implemented in WW in the form of the Hyoi pear.

    Fairy spell is so broken, but I guess you would obtain it quite late in the game. Kind of like the jump yoshi gives mario after beating sm64 where you can go back to early game and try cool stuff with it

      Now that I think about it it absolutely makes sense as the Ganon castle is even blocked off with a barrier that wouldn't let you skip it without destroying its barries as well. Pretty cool it could even been the reward of NG+ if they wanted to add replaybility

      i agree, maybe you only have a reduced power of the ability until you collect all the stray fairies in that corresponding dungeon. And of course the animation for casting the spells should be faster… lol maybe not even freezing time.

    Medallion magic used in the final game:
    Fire arrows + Fire Medallion (as Din's Fire)
    Ice arrows
    Wind Medallion (as Farore's Wind)
    Spirit arrows (as Light arrows, recoloured)
    Light Medallion (nerfed into Sun's Song)
    Shadow Medallion (nerfed into Naru's love)
    This means the only Medallion spells not used in the final game are the Sprit and Ice spells. Not sure why Ice Medallion spell was removed, but I have a theory that Spirit Medallion spell was replaced by Beans.
    As for the Wind, original Light and Shadow arrows not being used, that was probably for the best since Ice arrows don't get any use anyway.

      @Zylo Wolf 2.0 Or replace Fire Arrows with Wind Arrows. That way instead of lighting torches, you put them out. Shadow could create darker flames and original Light (Spirit) could be an alt for Light.

      As someone else said in another comment here: Could've made it more like the Hyoy pear in WW. As in, Link doesn't actually move with the fairy, but stays put. That would have nerfed it enough to be playable I think. And also be less weird. You're just controlling Navi, not transforming into a fairy.

      @@MasterHigure yeah but it would be more weird that you need a magic medallian to do that. Why can't navi already fly around and tell you what she sees? In fact she Does do that, by flying over to things and changing colour. If it's just a reconassance spell it seems kinda lame.
      So it makes sense that they removed it altogether imo... but I think one other way to impliment it instead of what you said, could be that it only works for a very short time because it drains magic so fast... and also have it only unlocked near the end of the game. This would work well since the Spirit temple is usually played last.

    I don't think this demo necessarily shows that the Dampe race was originally supposed to be a generic poe. It's quite possible that the poe was a placeholder either because Dampe's character had yet to be finalized or they intentionally put a poe there in his place to avoid spoiling that story point in the final game.
    It's so cool to see projects like this in action! It's not exact, but it's beautiful to see these effects being restored and I can't imagine they're too far off from the actual plan. I think a lot of people might be disappointed that this stuff was cut from the game, but keep in mind that it's probably more likely that the original build wasn't nearly this complete. This stuff probably wasn't in the accessible part of the demo for a reason. I imagine they never got very far into programming these spells. The only reason we even have an idea of what they would've done is because of text strings that describe them.
    As for the Light Medal, it was supposed to illuminate dark areas. I don't think any dark areas exist in the final game, so it's a spell that seems functionally useless. It's interesting to note, however, that Ocarina of Time is one of very few Zelda games that doesn't have dark rooms that need to be lit up. I wanna say the only other Zelda game that doesn't have darkness is Four Swords and even that I'm uncertain of.
    Some other details that weren't covered in the video: The Ice Spell was supposed to be able to put out torches in contrast to the Fire Spell's ability to light them. The arrows also had interesting effects. Similar to how the Light Arrows in the final game caused enemies to drop purple rupees, the other arrows would cause enemies to drop different items. The Wind and Soul Arrows caused enemies to drop Magic and Arrows respectively (making these elemental arrows and spells more consistently useable), the Shadow Arrows would cause enemies to drop Fairies. It's interesting to imagine that the arrows would've been used to help you replenish whatever resources you were needing. I'd also be willing to assume that the Ice Arrows might've also been able to put out torches since the Ice Medal could, but that's speculation on my part.
    Further speculation: I would guess that magic isn't included in this demo simply because it hadn't been implemented in this build of the game yet. I can't imagine it not being in the initial plans.

    This looks more fun than randomizer. A lot of these gameplay elements are a dream come true. Sadly, they only decided to bring back the boring whistle ànd running slash. I think it could be made perfect with better enemies and bosses.

    Is it a possibility that someone could take the maps and abilities/items from this and throw them into a rom hack? Just thinking about it is exciting, would be quite interesting to get different rewards than the typical boomerang, hookshot/longshot, etc.

      I've already been planning for ages to make a romhack of oot with all the unused ideas added back in, and extra temples added and stuff. One important thing I would add is these medallian spells. It's cool to see that someone's already restored them now (even tho they beat me to it lol). Another thing I would add is the sword beam for the master sword.
      I have a lot of ambition and ideas about this, but the only problem is I'm a noob and have never made a romhack before

      @@hentaidude666 don't worry, I'm not a dick. I just care about making the best version of this game, for the sake of art. I don't know if I'll ever manage to do it though, because like I said I don't really have the skills (at least yet).
      But one thing's for sure... if I manage to make it, I will definitely release it no matter what nintendo say. To hell with copyright, I will leak it everywhere and let it be torrented.
      Anyway, all I've managed to do so far is
      1. download and use the zelret decomp tool so I now have the game's source code in C, and
      2. brainstorm the things I'd want to add.

    Honestly would have loved for medallions to have powers in the final game. Such a cool idea to reward the players for completing the Dungeons outside of progressing the story.

      true, but it would also break the dungeons / make it almost impossible to design 3d dungeon puzzles that can't be cheesed. Maybe making it use a huge amount of magic, as well as only getting it late in the game could mitigate this

    I always believed that all the spells the medallions were supposed to bestow on u are actually in the final game, just on different items.
    I always thought:
    Forest (wind) medallion - Farores Wind
    Fire medallion - Dins Fire
    Ice (water) medallion - Ice arrows
    Spirit medallion - Nayrus love
    Shadow medallion - ???
    Light medallion - light arrows
    Notice the order I used the old temple order so water is ice and forest is Wind.
    Also there was supposed to be a temple of light as the final temple, so the light medallion was actually the last one u got and so it makes sense to be the equivalent to light arrows.
    Ice arrows being the power of the Ice medallion makes sense to me.
    But why do I think that the fire medallion didn't give u fire arrows? Well... I think fire arrows were a very late addition.
    Because fire arrows are the only ones in the game u can Producer without magic. Just fire an arrow through a torch-flame for example. Alsp every dungeon puzzle that 'needs' a fire arrow can be solved without actually having fire arrows, because there is always fire nearby.
    The only fire u ever 'need' is Din's fire to access the shadow temple and in ganons tower.
    Then there's Nayru's love. I think it makes sense to be the power of spirit. The location of the Spell in the final game (Desert Colossus) is also an indicator for me.
    That leaves the shadow medallion which doesnt really add up in my theory.
    Mayyybe it would give u the Lens of Truth effect.
    But that doesn't make too much sense because the fire medallion Symbol at the entrance of the shadow temple indicates, that the temple was realised when the medallions were still meant to be useable items.
    And u kind of need the lens of Truth in there... (at least the game wants u to have this Power)
    So what Power did it give u?

      Shadow Medallion magic got completely reworked into Nayru's Love.
      Original Light Medallion magic (which in retail was recoloured and renamed to Spirit Medallion) was replaced by Magic Beans and kid Link, since you wouldn't be able to crawl through holes as adult Link (early development only had adult Link).
      Ice Medallion magic was likely unused because there were already multiple ways to freeze enemies (Deku nuts, Ice arrows and Sun Song), so having a spell for it made no sense on top of it. The same goes for original Spirit magic.
      The unused arrow types: Wind, Shadow and original Light, it's purely speculative for what they would have been used for.
      Wind arrows could have put out fires and start up those fans in Shadow Temple and Ganon's Castle. It could have also been replaced by Hookshot and used to teleport to wherever you shoot your arrow.
      Shadow arrows seem to have been used to blind opponents like the Gerudo. Though since Shadow Medallion Magic seemingly does the same thing, it makes either one of them redundant (even more so, since they both got scrapped).
      Original Light arrows may have been replaced by the Lens of Truth, as it's a lot more inconvenient to shoot arrows around moving platforms and corridors than to just use the lens.

      @@sigurdtheblue Go Forest (for bow, because you need that all the time), then Water (for longshot, to get across Haunted Wasteland), then Spirit. It may not be the intended route, but it is not something the game prohibits in any way. Apart from Navi hints and that one Sheik convo after beating Forest, there is not even anything pointing you in any particular other direction.
      Fire and Shadow are now completely busted. As well as some of the trials of Ganon's castle. And the rest of Forest, if you didn't do that when you got the bow. Nintendo would've had to account for that in their temple design somehow. Or blocked you off from Spirit. And what would hoverboots and longshot be good for once you have Spirit medallion?

      @@MasterHigure I'm assuming they would have done something to block the way to Spirit Temple. Maybe by putting both mandatory Megaton Hammer and Hover Boots spots.
      Otherwise, Spirit Temple is supposed to be the last dungeon so it makes sense how it's supposed to give the most powerful spell

      They only really removed Spirit and Ice Medallion spells, since Fire, Wind and Shadow (changed into a healing spell, but looks the same) spells were changed into the goddess spells. Additionally, Light Medallion was nerfed into Sun Song.

      IMO because most of them were redundant by the time the game took shape:
      Medallions: 3 of them were turned into the goddesses spells, so they got in game. My guess for why they turned them into different items is the devs thinking they were better as optional items because they added extra gameplay time in order to collect them rather than being handed out. As for the ones that didn't make the cut:
      Light: it's literally the deku nut effect but only works on specific enemies.
      Water: it's the same as light one but without enemy restriction, basically the deku nut but way slower due to the cast time.
      Spirit: it's way to game-breaking, you literally could skip anything in the game.
      The arrows most likely because they had no _use case_ by that I mean that even in the final game when only the light, fire and ice arrows got in they are barely used for progression at all, aside from the light arrows the other two are just kinda there: the fire one is only mandatory once in the entire game (in the Spirit chamber of Ganondorft castle) and the ice arrows aren't needed for anything, they most likely stuck around because they needed a _bragging rights_ item for completing the Gerudo Training Grounds. So it made no sense from a dev standpoint to keep the other 3 because they weren't required for anything else.

      The final version of OoT being as good as it is should tell you everything. The feature bloat on this game was immense and they wouldn't have been able to deliver. They had to scale things way back.

      @Zylo Wolf 2.0 when I found all that out I know they always said that the ideas they didn't get to put in got used eventually in other games, but after seeing them in action finally I kinda don't agree with what they've been saying. Some things for sure, but the variations of arrows wasn't used till kinda recently and we still don't get wind one or dark ones, the medallion spells is what I really meant specifically tho, I would love to see the return of more spells in the series like how it's implemented here
