I will say it was the first real Godzilla movie I was able to see in the theater. My dad and I went together. Yeah, I was a bit older this time, but we both looked at it as a rite of passage. It was something he always promised me he would do when I was younger if a new Godzilla movie ever came out. Sure, we went to the 98 Godzilla together, but that was a huge fiasco and I also brought along a large group of friends. We had fun, but it didn't feel like a real Godzilla movie. This one did, but I will say being in the audience, it was a little disappointing. It was mostly young children. Like I felt like I was going to see a children's movie after a while. Normally I wouldn't care. I just thought that maybe at that time there were still people my age that love godzilla. Like people who are 15 or 16 or 17 years old. Now, none of that matters to me. If it's godzilla, I have a lot of fun watching it, no matter who with, or where I am. I will say that for its time, it was pretty good in regards to special effects. Sure. It didn't hold the candle to modern Hollywood effects, but for being a suit nation production, and blending the effects with cgi, it definitely held its own for its time

Just saw 2000 for the first time in several years at the Fathom Event showing and I was taken off-guard by a lot of stuff I didn't remember. In particular, I thought the scenes of the text floating along the screens was actually really well done and eerie. I think they also did a better job of explaining what the alien actually was. However, I definitely agree that it could've used some editing down. I also missed the sound effect they used for the UFO in the American version. It just tickles my brain.

It's also one of the better dubs in the entire franchise, but ever since being able to watch the original Japanese cut I prefer to watch that over the dub. This is one of my personal favorite Godzilla movies of all time. It came out the same year I was born too. I will say, it's really interesting to see what was in the original Japanese version that got cut from the U.S. version. I will say, one thing that got changed in the dub was at the scene where the guy says Great Ceaser's Ghost. I won't say what it was, but they did say on the DVD commentary that they cut what he originally said for the dub from the movie because they didn't think American audiences would like hearing it. Also, when you were talking about the missile scene and the sound effects of the missiles hitting Godzilla being changed, I'm glad they changed it in the U.S. version because watching the original sound effects in the Japanese version and the U.S. version in this video, when the missiles hit Godzilla, man do they sound very weak in the Japanese version. And man the music in the U.S. version is so good too.

Thanks, it's interesting to get a breakdown of the differences. I bought a VCD of Millennium in 2000 and enjoyed it many times. Unfortunately the US version I'd seen only maybe 10-15 minutes of because I found the dialog and voice performances grating in comparison. I can appreciate that the US version seems to be a tighter edit and have a brighter picture. But I like the few lingering shots and background details of the Japanese edit, it has more room to breathe.

Saw this in theaters with my dad. Godzilla 2000 will always be my favorite. The US edit is basically a perfect movie. The minute you turn it on you notice the immersive sound, perfect pacing and hilarious dialogue. Godzilla movies have a reputation of funny bad dialogue, but often times it's just simply bad and not really funny. The US edit went all-in on having the characters say completely random stuff that makes you burst out laughing. Changing it from "old woman" to "imbecile" is the perfect example. Or the guys on the train lol. There's a whole little story going on there. There are so many funny lines. "Great Caesar's Ghost!" Why would he say that? It just kills me.
Another thing that makes this movie stand out is that the human characters are not standing there explaining every little thing that's going on with the monsters as if they read the script. They figure some stuff out but for the most part it's left more mysterious. I would love to see other Godzilla movies especially of the Heisei series receive this same treatment. I can't help but really admire the pitch perfect tone that they were able to create, and how much unnecessary stuff they were able to correctly identify and cut out. Leaving the subject of the Millennium aliens out of it was a stroke of genius. Playing Godzilla's original theme song while he rolls into town is also genius. The movie winds up feeling a lot more focused on Godzilla himself. The fights are long, varied, and relatively uninterrupted. The suit acting is expressive and Godzilla's movement and reactions to things give him a lot of characterization. And we have to give credit to the best atomic ray ever conceived. It has never looked better and the charge up has never been used to greater effect. The way his spikes gradually heat up and you can almost feel the heat coming off them is so sick.

I think generally, the Japanese cut of most Godzilla films is the overall stronger version. In some cases, you kind of get an either-or scenario where both cuts have strengths and weaknesses. Godzilla 2000 is an example where I unabashedly, 100% prefer the US version as a clear improvement over the Japanese cut and consider the US version to be the definitive edit of the film.

I totally get the differences especially watching the godzilla animated series and the USA version from the 1998 film of Godzilla. I just think overall, if anything, the meaning/differences of the Godzilla SHOULD be kept as simple as possible if we are to cater for the general audiences level. Sure, we can split the differences and meanings to it, but would it complicate the situations more at the general audiences level is all we should ask to ourselves all and all.
