Considering the marketing for Godzilla vs Kong really favored Kong in its trailers having Godzilla’s name be given this fancy font while Kong gets nothing is oddly cathartic
I owned several of these covers as a kid, because I always thought they were different movies. I had like 6 different copies of the same movie at one point.
8:20 that's the specific Ghidrah VHS I had all those years back! Probably the most played and replayed VHS tape at my parent's house to this day, lol. I never caught the detail of the spine art however, things you miss as a kid I guess.
Ayyy I was actually thinking about you making a video? Kinda shocked by this but I needed this today! Your vids always make me interested in things like strange Kaiju art, or that alien star fish film etc.
1:48 This one brings back memories when I saw this in Walmart when I was so young 8:15 Yo! I remember those. I had Mechagodzilla, 1985, and Ghidorah. 9:53 That one I had and would stare at it for a long time. Something about the artwork caught my attention.
I’ve just started watching your channel and I think you deserve more attention because you put so much devotion and effort and you get barely 1 to 5 thousand views. Overall, keep up the good work
you hit it right on the head the research that goes into his videos are outstanding definitely does his homework before publishing anything LOVE THE CHANNEL keep up the great work
It's actually fascinating that most of these case art had the same vibes as those infamous hand-painted Ghanaian movie posters where the artists were probably just told scenes that happened (or never happened) in the movie, and they just painted whatever they imagined in their minds.
I actually had a VHS of that 35th anniversary version of Kong vs Godzilla when I was a kid (before replacing it with a DVD version), and I still remember catching on to how the designs used weren't the correct ones in the film
12:00 Just beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. That one got me the most in terms of laughing, but there were some pretty good ones in there. I have seen cover art for Godzilla vs Megalon where they are standing on the World Trade Center towers, sometimes I wonder if the people that make the art have even seen a Godzilla movie, or know a single thing about the character aside from. "Big monster that shoots fire."
Love these vids. 3:06 Kinda reminds me of the poster for Schlock, or the Minnesota Ice Man. 'Godzilla' in the same cover looks like a blurry photo of a crocodile with painted-on spines and extra teeth. If it wasn't sandwiched between two other versions of Godzilla vs. Gigan, I'd have no idea what film Extermination 2025 was supposed to represent.
9:20 DUDE THEY RENAMED IT "LA ISLA DE LOS BAMBÚES ROJOS", THAT'S SPANISH FOR "THE ISLAND OF THE RED BAMBOOS". They were clearly referring to the evil organization from the film, but it's just so bizarre as a title for this movie. From what I've seen, it's the argentinian release. I'm very intrigued since few kaiju flicks get distributed here, at least nowadays, and it's mostly the american adaptations, so this might be one of the first and few times a japanese one got here.
I almost never comment on videos but your channel never disappoints. I love seeing all the old weird Godzilla stuff. I would love to see a video about posters and vhs art that is actually good. If you can find any :)
Great video! I have the goodtimes and new world vsh tapes after all these years but sadly I didn't preserve the covers and later made my own haha. The Gigan one used to confuse me too and it made me think the 2 woman were separate characters as a child lol
that video cover with the green Godzilla and the volcano in the background is extremely nostalgic to me, because I think if I remember correctly, that was my first Godzilla movie that I picked out from the store
The approach Anchor Bay took with their 1997 Godzilla VHS tapes with the full image that you get with all the tapes’ spins together reminds me a lot of the VHS releases Star Trek movies with the OG cast. Essentially, having Star Trek 1-6 would give you a very nice artwork of the Enterprise, but getting more than one box set would give you a bigger Enterprise artwork. It was honestly really cool!
I actually have the Anchor Bay Ghidora VHS at home. Never realized it formed a pic with the spine art. Can't remember what else it came with since it was in a two-pack. And I also have the original Good Times Ebirah. Still some of my favorite box art.
I remember having a vhs copy of Godzilla vs Gigan as a kid which not only had a very inaccurate artwork of Godzilla fighting King ghidorah, seriously ghidorah looked more like the Hydra from Jason and the Argonauts . But the tiles was changed to War of the monsters of all things. I didn't even know it was Godzilla vs Gigan till i read the info on the back of the cover.
@Angry Boy IKR?! Even if they had I doubt gigan would have been recognisable. As I said Ghidorah on that vhs art was blueish silver and looked more like the Hydra from Jason and the Argonauts
Extermination 2025 is straight up baffling to me. Like, that's just an existing image that they reused. It's like the designer was told "it's a science fiction film" and nothing else
He looked sooooo cool, I've seen VHS tape covers in the 90s as a kid on paper ads, but I could never tell 'how' to get them and that was what grated me.
6:20 Don't go throwing shade at a masterpiece like this. It was a perfect byproduct of the era it was released in, encapsulating a feel that had been honed to a razor thin point. It would go over the heads of most too young to remember, or too old to relish the opportunity to celebrate its brilliance, but for my generation, we are savants of such classics. We not only appreciate this art, we celebrate it as an achievement. That is the majesty of fandom.
Hey I got that Godzilla vs Hedorah Simitar VHS. My parent's almost didn't buy it for me when I was a kid because they thought it was a cartoon. Thankfully they caved in. And I managed to get a double Laserdisk set that had X From Outer Space and Yongary Monster From the Deep too that day :P
The VHS at 1:47 was the first godzilla related movie I bought back in 2003, found it a a flea market. Though in my opinion, it always looked like Kong was gunna karate chop Godzilla while he was distracted
I like how I own most of the monster flicks they show in the commercial at the end of the video. Anyway, I really like the Gorgo cover. It is so badly made.
I got the Good Times Home Video Ebira VHS and the New Worlds Home Video MechaGodzilla and Gigan VHS from Sam Goody like 25 years ago or so, so I was quite pleasantly surprised to see them.
I’ve been a life long fan of the monster movies. Especially Godzilla and Gamera. And yes I do own the Godzilla vs King Kong ( original one) I still get a laugh when Godzilla does the drop kick
The 1984 Godzilla and 1976 Kong poster kinda makes me wish we got a Godzilla vs King Kong movie in the Heisei era with both monsters fighting in a fiery city and destroying it, it looks kinda cool
the vhs tapes that has the spine art making G84 are the main ones i grew up with seeing. I honestly never knew that so many people fucked up these movies this much...without even touching the actual movie
I wish I could go back in time to be a graphic designer in the 80s and 90s, when you could just get away with this shit and everyone else just had to go with it.
The closest with the Extermination 2025 cover to connect to Godzilla vs Gigan is arguably slightly insectoid-like helmets on those guys and possibly alien to relate to the cockroaches, with the screens on the back showcasing entertainment which would be connected to the theme park. But this is of course, bein' supergenerous.
I had most of the Godzilla movies on VHS, back in the day. (I think some of them might have been bootlegs, but shh! 🤫😉) Some of them were taped off of tv (I also had the two that were on MST3K), but I distinctly remember having a release that had Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs Megalon, if only because I’d never seen a box that just had two VHS tapes shoved in it, before - or since. 🙂
The monster in that last Ebirah Metafilms cover kinda looks like Rick from Splatterhouse. Maybe the artist had the third game's cover on the mind when making it.
1:36 i have this siren release of king kong vs godzilla and can explain why some of it looks a little off… this was a series of i believe 6 tapes (of which i only have 5 to base this off :( ) of godzilla specifically for australian audiences, where (at the time) there wasn’t really as much of a market for these sort of films and not many releases came here without being imported from the US. “godzilla” is stylised as he is the selling point for the series and every one of them has that same big coloured font of his name, then the rest of the title beneath it. i think you were onto something with how he looks like a toy - if you have a look at the australian siren release for godzilla vs monster zero or godzilla vs sea monster, it becomes more obvious that they just phoned elements of it in and used some colouring techniques over models or toys or something. however, godzilla: king of the monsters and especially destroy all monsters have some great original artwork that is debatably one of the best posters for these movies imo. i believe there’s a godzilla vs mechagodzilla release as well although i could be wrong, it’s really hard to find info about these specific releases outside of maybe ebay and australia unfortunately does not have much of a collectors market/archive for a VHS like this… hope this helps and apologies for such a long comment!
The main reason why many of those tapes had art that had absolutely nothing to do with what happened in the movies is because of lot of them did not have the rights to release the films. So bizarre, misrepresentative cover art would hide what movie is actually on the tape.
Had a few of these and some others over the years but sold them all when i upgraded to DVD and then Bluray… kinda wish i had held onto them, as collecting weird Goji VHS releases actually sounds fun 🙂 …not that i really **need** something _else_ to collect 😅
On the first Smog Monster VHS box, the inside of the top flap has a snipit of the Godzilla vs. Monster Zero box cover, running along the edge. Not sure if that’s just my particular copy, or if all of them are like that, but it’s interesting to see.
i think the carlton home videos tried to make it like this "GODZILLA: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla" but jsut forgot the colon (or whatever its called) and tried to make it like it was a trilogy, like the anime trilogy

Maybe Godzilla was trained by Master Roshi and both Goku and Godzilla fought in a martial arts tournament at night. Then Goku saw a full moon transforming him into an Oozaru.
The clamser video realise of King Kong vs Godzilla I think it’s poster is kinda cool even though there are not the same as the original film but idc it still looks cool and that’s all
The best one on 2:06 is the clamser video realise of King Kong vs Godzilla, the worst one is on 3:05 the DEC version of King Kong vs Godzilla because King Kong kinda looks like mighty Peking man and Godzilla is like a crocodile or barugon from gamera vs barugon that poster is definitely the worst one I think I have ever seen
"mutated toad crossed with a demon shark" is now my favorite way to describe a crocodile
That's actually an alligator. It has a round U-shaped snout, while crocs have narrow V-shaped snouts.
