How to run a test cycle on an ice maker (sub zero or similar)

  • This was a new icemaker installed on a sub zero 532 unit from 1988. The old whirlpool style icemaker was beginning to peel. We installed a fresh replacement with a new solenoid valve.
This will work on older style ice makers. Newer units have a computer board that will often control power to the solenoid. So, my words of caution are really intended for older style ice makers with no cpu board present.
Other than that, this is how you test an older style sub zero ice maker ( or any other brand utilizing a whirlpool style ice maker)

Hi...Thanks for the video! I actually have a different type of icemaker in my SZ freezer. It does not have the holes to jumper it. Instead, there is a screw on the drive gear that needs to be turned counter-clockwise to get the cycle started. While your video didn't show this, it did get me down the right path to figuring out my own. Long story short, I finally managed to watch a cycle (after replacing my old icemaker), and my leak is actually coming from behind the ice maker! I think I either have a loose connection between the filler tube and the inlet nozzle on the back wall or I have a cracked filler tube. At least now I can stop looking at the ice maker. Thanks!

Yes, your ice maker line fell popper of the fill tube hardware. You need to remove the unit and re insert the line. After to do that change the solenoid valve. It’s more than likely the culprit.

This is a classic Whirlpool ice maker. Cheers 🥂

Good point on the end there

I have been having trouble with my ice maker for a long time. I actually think it might be the condenser unit BUT I am trying the door seal next.
I was having a myriad of problems. It would make if, then it wouldn’t. Then I would end up with a big block of ice in my ice cube tray as if I put in two inches of water there. I am not sure if everything melted and then froze or if my ice maker did not eject the ice and water overflowed with each cycle.
I replace the ice maker and the water pump as it seemed to have failed also.
Now the only way it seems to work (new ice maker) is if I jump it every time. And even at that, the jumping does not always seem to want to work.
so, I am going to check the level of the ice maker and put in a new door seal in the next few days.
Sometimes when I reach up there is still water in the tray that has not frozen so I am wondering if the lower part of my freezer freezes but the upper does not.
It is the subzero 550 and many years old. The freezer setting is at 4.
Any thoughts? I hate to spend another 150 CAD on another ice maker.
Do people ever change out the compressor unit (I think that is what it is called) or do we simply replace the entire unit.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey thanks for the video. I just got a house with a sub zero fridge with a non working ice maker and im trying to figure out if its working/gets water/worth replacing. Probably just going to order a new ice maker as I know its a 2003 unit. THanks again.

New solenoid and ice maker probably advisable anyway due to the age of the thing. Can’t hurt. Find your water source and filter it like I did, cheap and effective.

Hello, great video and helpful channel :) I have a model 532 from 1995. Recently it has started forming big blocks of ice in the ice bucket. Seems like water is dripping and freezing. Are there different things you would check before replacing parts?

dude just a thought...you may want to put that disclaimer with what makers you test on and what age, at the front of the video. haha...I am positive people today will watch this, see the test and immediately test the maker. Might make it to the end of the video...lol good video

Can the amount of water fill be adjusted?

Can you make a video how to change old Ice water line in a 500 series sub zero. Can't find any videos on, only the solenoid.

Sure Ruben we do them all the time, I’ll make a video for you next time, it’s actually the same for every sub zero ever!

Hey buddy. Is the gear on the 700270 same as the whirlpool n ge n frigidaire icemakers? The white gear next to the one with the flat head screw..can i just replace a gear?

    • @subzerorepair
      @subzerorepair  ปีที่แล้ว

Im sure you could, and the gear would probably fit, but I would not do that. Replace it, don’t risk anything, Keep those insurance premiums down and your customers happy. No one wants a flood, these ice makers can get stuck, especially if their is no safety built into cpu board. This unit was from the 90s in this video, if the ice maker gets stuck in the fill position and you flood the house…

@@subzerorepair for sure thats the older ice maker.. i have a customer that was insisting on "not creating waste" but i insisted on " not causing a flood" lol well see where it goes

@@subzerorepair it is a new style bi model and the water valve has a flo meter on it that would stop the water flow if over 9 seconds. I believe ..

So if jumping the T and H terminals work and it doesn’t work on its own, does that mean the thermostat might be bad?

    • @subzerorepair
      @subzerorepair  ปีที่แล้ว

Verify the actual freezer is getting cold enough (near 0 degrees). If t/h terminals work when Jumped, then you have power at the ice maker and the solenoid is working, it would indicate an internal issue with the ice maker. I would elect to change the ice maker.

If I can save someone else half a day...
This is what I was looking for as I troubleshoot my ice maker. HOWEVER...
I have a Whirlpool bottom drawer refrigerator. In order for this to work, the drawer must be closed OR put a piece of tape and hold the light switch such that the refrigerator *thinks* the drawer is closed. If the light is on in the freezer compartment, there will be no voltage to the ice maker.
So, before you try this, tape the switch so the light is "OFF," then test for 120VAC at the test points 'L' (line) and 'N' (neutral). If you don't have 120VAC at those test point, this method will not work.

Dude says don't run a test on an ice maker 30, 20 or 10 years old... Well, a Couple of questions???
A: is it 30, 20, 10 or what? If it's only safe to test a new ice maker, that's awfully pathetic. I would expect a new one to work without testing!(?)!!!
Never mind my other questions, this is bad enough. Good Luck with your Fridge! John
