  • For 2018 the Subaru Crosstrek received a redesign featured on Subaru's Global Platform. With updated sheetmetal and totally revised interior does this Subaru have any short comings to keep it from being GREAT? Watch this and find out!

    I bought my 2018 fully loaded but wouldn't have opted for a turbo. I wanted good gas mileage and low cost fuel which is not what you get with a turbo. Every review has the obligatory knock on the lack of H.P. but as my daily driver, it's never been an issue.

    I'd argue it's better without a turbo. Simpler and less stuff to go bad. We love ours! It's actually not crazy slow. At least for me, the AWD feels cool the way it just grabs traction. Can't say the same for my GTI.

      The AWD in this car totally amazing but you have to choose ultra wisely when you pull out in traffic.

      Zach Heath I agree..if you keep your cars long term...a turbo is just going to funk you up when it goes south

      Zach Heath I kind of agree. Also, I heard sand and the turbo model didn't do well together cause the turbo is toward the bottom right.

      The intake has a charcoal filter in it for catching escaped gasses when you turn off the car. If you remove the charcoal part out then it improves low end power and throttle response.

      Zach - thanks for your info. I may try to buy one next year. I don't think it is that slow. After all it is nit designed to be a race car anyway. Thanks for the information.

    Great review Joe! The Crosstrek works great in the snow here In New Hampshire. Off road not so good with the CVT especially on rocky hills, a dirt road but not to much more. Personally I think Subaru should ditch the CVT transmission. Still a good northern New England winter car, as it eats the snow up. Subaru sells a ton of these in my neck of the woods.

    Great review again Joe. We traded my wife's Jeep Wrangler a year ago for the new '18 Crosstrek and I'm here to report that 11,000 miles later it's a pleasure to own. Unlike the Wrangler it's very reliable. I agree - a turbo as an option would be huge... one that my wife wouldn't care about, but one that I'd love during my time behind the wheel. I will say though - although on paper it would seem this vehicle is grossly underpowered, the reality is it performs just fine and is not an issue when pulling out into aggressive traffic situations. And the gas mileage is just incredible. I just did a one tank test with both highway and local mileage combined - and I'm not kidding we averaged 40 mpg. That's with 70+ mph on the highway and a purposeful focus on gradual acceleration - just to see how good it could be. So far I think it's amazing value considering the reasonable pricing.

    • @RaitisRides
      @RaitisRides  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you once again for your wonderful compliment and well thought out comments. I know many people who have dropped their Jeep Wrangler and gone the Subaru route because of reliability issues. The Crosstrek really is the do it all vehicle. I think that there is a whole in Subaru's lineup since they are not brining back the Forester XT for 2019. As an option I would love to see a Crosstrek XT, and very curious how it would sell. You can't deny the bang for the buck though on the Crosstrek.

  • @YocoWheelin
    @YocoWheelin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I don't think it needs a turbo, since they are less reliable. But it does need more power. At least OFFER another engine. Be it the 2.5L or something.

    You hit the nail in the head on the Crosstrek/XV.
    It really a Swiss army knife of Subaru here, It part SUV/5 door hatchback car with boot space for long items from Ikea trips, roof rails to fix bike racks or surfboard racks for weekend biking or wave surfing.
    I will avoid getting white IMO because if you car is not washed weekly, grime and dirt is very noticeable under the sun and it get worse with the rain nowadays which contain tons of smog and dust.
    Our family Crosstrek as mentioned before is the 1.6L Premium in Baby Blue. It was their more rare color and it really attracted a lot of stare and onlookers wondering what color is our car. Is it aftermarket spray paint? Made them taking second guesses.
    The car not a fast, but as a daily stop and go traffic driver.
    Nothing to complain here.
    US is too obsessed with high Cubic Inches, prob spoit by the muscle car.
    The version we got is the early batch of the 2018 refresh so it didnt come with the Subaru Eyesight and the 1.6L was quickly phased out here for the 2.0L
    The interior when compared to the old 2004 Forester XT is night and day with all that posh leather look and plastic which doesn't look cheap and even the fake carbon fibre is tasteful
    It kinda weird the US gets the version with the cable based handbrake while the Asian gets the one with the Electronic E-Brake.
    Great review

    By put a turbo in an SUV? Response of NA engine and better fuel economy is better for this type of car. Its got enough power and it’s really linear so you never get power kick especially with CVT. Go get a sports car if you’re looking for power not a compact SUV.

    • @RaitisRides
      @RaitisRides  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nick Eckemoff thank you for sharing your input. There are PLENTY of compact SUVs out there that have a turbo. I’m not looking for a rocket but I think it would be nice to have it as an option.

    • @nickeckemoff7631
      @nickeckemoff7631 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Does it really make a difference is a compact SUV goes 1 or 2 seconds faster to 60. My crosstrek is 8-9 seconds to 60 and its plenty enough power to pass and do everything required of it - safe family car. When I drive it, I don't care at all how fast it is... I get in my sports car if I want to go fast. When I drive the family car, I want to drive safe and comfortable.
      BTW, lower power is a good thing for this car. You can more accurately use it off-road and the way the AWD system works is the rear wheels engage more often sine you must rev it out. With full throttle more often, you're doing nearly 50% front and 50% rear. If you're cruising with no throttle, its 10% rear. Adding a turbo will reduce the need and opportunity to rev, meaning the AWD would be engaged less. Ultimately this would cause the car to behave more like a traditional AWD system that's mostly off. Also peaky torque will get you in trouble in poor weather conditions, meaning less spikes makes it safer.
      My 911 gets to 60 in 3 secs with launch control. When I drive my crosstrek, I have a completely different mindset and am not expecting fast acceleration. I think most buyers are the same. Its a tool and transportation.

    Outstanding video as usual Joe! I have never driven a Crosstrek but do have a 2018 Subaru Outback 4 cylinder (non-turbo) and I think the power is adequate with the exception of 0-60 which takes about 10 seconds just like the Crosstrek does. It's plenty quick enough when merging onto the highway from an onramp or passing while traveling on the interstate and I'm guessing the smaller size Crosstrek would be very similar. Personally, I'm not a big fan of turbo engines or CVT's but it seems like they are becoming more standard on new vehicles for their better fuel milage.

I personally love the car, and love the fact my family is safe with our east coast winters. Love or hate it for styling and power still an amazing package that Subaru made for the segment. Hard to touch anything else out there in this price range. Probably the reason they haven't put the FA motor in this car as it would drive the price up exponentially. Plus going from a stand still to 60 mph in ten seconds is not slow. In fact, I think a car that'll do 0 to 60 in 10 seconds and still be fuel efficient and reliable is pretty good. 1/ Full tank gas up to 720km using speed cruise.
    2/ base model provide full iPhone android integration covering all key applications especially google map
    3/ wonderful all wheel symmetrical drive, you won’t get this elsewhere
    4/ car power is great no TC is required for day to day rational driving purposes
    I wonder why ppl think 🤔 that TC is good to have.
    I have TC CX7 now and never experienced lower fuel ⛽️ consumption. It’s for sale if you are TC fan.

    "This car is one of Subaru's biggest mistake's" is such a hyperbole! This is probably the millionth short-term review foolishly complaining about the engine.
    Talk to actual owners and, especially after the break-in period, the car picks up just fine on both the highway and in city. It's by no means a fast vehicle but it can certainly pull its own weight. A larger displaceement engine wouldn't hurt but it's not necessary IMO - and a turbo would unnecessarily complicate things.

      Thanks for the response! If your wife drove a Crosstrek for three years, that must mean she owned the first gen? There is a new, marginally more powerful engine in the second gen and the CVT is supposedly reprogrammed. I'm not sure how significant of a difference it makes but that could explain the difference in our experiences. From what I have read, people seem to assert the new engine quite is a bit peppier and more fun. It's not unreasonable to call it a slow car but I don't think it qualifies as a major complaint since this is a utilitarian vehicle with an emphasis on efficiency.

      No it's not. The car is designed to run on 87. Also no matter what gas you put in it doesn't fix it. Subaru has replaced the short block just recently and that actually seems to have worked. They changed egr valve...mass airflow sensor..knock sensor...ecm...and finally short block. I doubt subaru would go through all of that because of something like higher octane gas. And if 93 were the answer...then subaru would be paying me 60 cents for every gallon I ever put in that thing since right in the manual it says 87. I would not buy a car if I had to put 93 in it. It actually runs a lot better with the new block. It's been one big headache with this car.

      I have a 16 Crosstrek and luckily no oil consumption issues. My issues are paint quality, power, materials. The paint they use is crap. This engine is too small for this size of a vehicle.

      It is a risk with the oil consumption. I have a 2013 Impreza that burns no oil, supposedly they came out with a fix around mid-2013 as the 2.0 engine was introduced in 2012. Still, many others have reported issues on cars built after this. With 58,000 miles, mine runs very well and acceleration is better than when new.

    Can we discuss the roof rails. Who 99% of the buyers will never use...maybe to transport a mother in law or two on long trips...lol. They have got to be an option. Like the motor.....make you a Deal. Get rid of the roof rails. And I'll lobby for a bigger engine option...👍

    I have one, its honestly awesome... I just dont understand how someone comes to the table with an issue about HP in this rig.. Its not a sports car. Its not even really a car.. Its some kind of cross over type vehicle. Thing was not intended for white knuckle experiences. Foolish take in my opinion.
