    The irony in this video for me is insane. This was one of the first videos I saw of the Crosstrek's offroad capability before I bought mine. Years later, a lot of time and money put into making my Crosstrek as offroad capable I as I could make it. It was 2" lift, Geolander G003 M/Ts 215/75r15s, engine skid plate, and a whole bunch of other goodies. I took it out on a beach last summer, a beach I have been to many times. I drove to one end, turned around, drove to the other end which has a channel running inland. I go to turn around, and lose all forward momentum and dug myself into a hole with M/T tires (I didnt air down enough). My mistake on my part; I went from 40psi to 20psi thinking that would be enough but it wasnt. The tide was coming in about 8 inches every 30 minutes. With my car 8 or so feet away from the water, it was making me really nervous. On the other side of the channel (of water), was beach with some residents. People would walk down the beach, spot me from about 75 feet away, and just stare for a few seconds, and turn around and walk away. 5 or so people/groups of people did the same thing over the span of an hour and a half. Until this one man. He was walking towards me, and I was at the point of feeling helpless, so I didnt really think too much of him, until he was on the other side of the channel which was only about 15 or so feet from me. He asked "Are you stuck?" I responded "Yes I am, can you help me?" He replies, "I can't but I have a buddy with an old ass Defender that lives on this beach over here that can probably get you out." And sure enough within 10 minutes of waiting, I see this 1980s Land Rover Defender appear from the trail entrance approximately 1 mile from where I was stuck. This Defender was loaded; winch, front and rear diff lockers, A/T tires (which float on sand) 4low and 4high, manual, turbo diesel... Honestly put my Crosstrek to shame with its pathetic open differentials. Dont even get me started on that. With a few tugs of the winch, he was able to get me out and moving back to the trail and off the beach. I havent offroaded the Crosstrek since that day. That day has humbled me from offroading; with the potential to lose my car in such a way was a huge reality check for me. If it wasnt for that dude to stumble upon me on his morning beach walk, and be willing to ask his friend to beat on his vehicle to come and get me out, to this day I am still in shock. Now stumbling upon this video again after all this time, and the experience I had, the world just has a funny way of working out I guess.

      Thank you for writing and sharing. That was a great story. And so my supicions are confirmed. "Sports utility vehicles" (SUVs) really should be called "Sub-urban vehicle." There is nothing sporty about them and off-road they are not.
      Oh, and if you ever consider parking your car under water, make sure it is a Hi-Lux. A BBC programme you know showed us it can take it - and then some :)

    Its funny how many people are butthurt. You people need to realize that subarus are very capable vehicles. My family is a Subaru family. We've impressed soo many people with what our cars can do. We once took our 98 outback up a mountain where the people that lived at the top had an h1 and a lifted truck just to get up. Once we got up there they asked us how the hell we got up here. We just replied, because it's a Subaru. So before all you people start saying that the Subaru would do horribly in a different environment, you are wrong. Yes it may not do as well, but they do make lifts for these cars and it's much cheaper than buying a land Rover like that. And yes they have gotten a bit soft lately, unlike the old rugged subarus, but they can still do amazing things when it comes to off roading.

      it's all about the indoor cat, larpers pretending to be something they're not. the frail suburban feminized man driving his subaru larping as a true off road vehicle. it's because on the surface it looks like yeah! subaru can do anything! its FAAR FROM TRUE. people like TRUTH. .... not larping keyboard warriors. Subarus have intelligent traction control THATS IT. its good for traction situations and minor articulation. It's 'good' and light'. but it CANNOT handle true rugged off road. it's just so cringe worthy to listen to pasty white suburban americans posing. it's all Larping Culture, a big theme in today's social media era where you can just say one thing. Come to Australia or South Africa and test your little subarus. they'll bend and tear apart!

      Never fails to give me a little giggle when people refer to Australia or South Africa as having the "toughest" conditions. Grew up in Australia, lived and worked in the Pilbara for 6 years and yeah it can be challenging, but since traveling and working in a lot of other countries around the world, including Africa, there are plenty of places out there with wayyyyyy tougher driving conditions.

      They kick ass in the snow and ice too. We have about 4-5 months of winter driving here and Subaru is one of the top brands. We get a good bit of snow most years here in N. Idaho.

      Luke Skywalking I have spent my early life in the mountains in Alaska. We used all sorts of vehicles, pickup trucks, a various variety of cars, RV's. And we found two vehicles that worked well to get to areas many trucks and the like couldn't to get to. Subaru, and a Trail 90. It's true, that some of these trucks, with modifications, can get over these big rocks and the like, but much of the time, it was because they were so large, that they had to go over them, instead of around. Subaru is very capable, and we used their engine on our dredge. Because we were miners of gold, and had to get to remote river areas to get to our claim. Much of the time, even the Trail 90 couldn't get us there, so we had to walk, but still, we got more places, and closer when we used these things.

    Without a doubt Subaru's are wonderful cars. I had Subaru impreza manual and I loved it really much specially during winter, it was an amazing car. I had to let it go since I had to change clutch twice before it reached 100K which to me, it was a money pit. Furthermore, I was not even a harsh driver at all.

    Subaru is a very capable car and I can understand how the landrover's fans get crazy by comparison between the two. Subaru XV is more than enough for the family living in the suburbs which have harsh winter.

    Where I lived, the one is three times the price of the other. Meaning you could use two of the Crosstreks as a ramp and drive the third one over them, getting you places where the Defender could only dream of going.

    For average drivers the Subaru is simply the more suitable vehicle in an off-road environment. But when it comes to real rough off-road conditions the Defender offers more reserves to the skilled driver.

    My Outback was incredibly capable and in some circumstances, was better off road or in bad conditions then my Discovery. Ice, snow, wet fields on a slope, rough roads, all in its stride. The discovery was too heavy and agricultural when the going got slippy. Of course, in deep mud, deep ruts and deep water, the disco was better.

    To be fair, I've run Land Rovers, two at present, a Discovery 2 and a P38, plus two 1944 3/4 Dodge WC vehicles. I also rebuild Land Rovers for fun. And I've had Subaru. The Subaru is a very capable off road vehicle, and not on prepared test tracks, in the right deep shite. If I wanted to tow a horse box up a 1:4 , and yes I've done it, then I'd use a Defender, if I wanted to tour around the country in a vehicle that will deal with most things, I'd have the Subaru.

      This test is flawed though, when going over the planks at the end, he said something about the LR being hard to control etc, even though he was going quite a bit quicker.. Also if he used the LRs low range gear box he wouldn't have the troubles which they moaned about.

      apart from the fact that the Subaru would probably loose it's front bumper, side sill and rear bumper, and incur under body damage, and articulation would be a big issue. If you honestly think it would be a tie in realistic off road scenario, to think that would it would be a tie is unrealistic.

      On decent tires, a muddy field (as per OP's comment) would be a cake walk for the XV. Now, of course, in proper off road situations, the Defender is MILES better, but on a field and on the same tires, it'd be close to a tie.

      +tigergreg8 The one they should bring back is the ?Justy, That was a unique vehicle back in the day when Subaru sold through tractor dealers. It was the size and roughly the shape of a Mini Metro, normally a front wheel drive, press button hey presto 4x4. Used to be called the Farmer's wife's car, and aI know a lot of Farmers and thier wives who miss it.

      Oh I agree with you on the Justy. When Subaru first came in they were sold through agricultural dealears. That's were I got my first experience of the initial 1600 cc pick ups. Luxury after Land Rovers. The Justy became known as the Farmer's wife's car. It did exactaly what it should, got around in coditions that would stop most small cars.

    Albeit they're comparing an old LR to a new Subie, I have to say that my 2014 XV is probably the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have the same model shown in the video above, but with manual transmission instead.

      In the UK, a rare sight indeed with a manual box. I do like the Subaru CVT though, I had to downsize from an Outback. Maybe one day I will get another, or the Levorg. Im not into the hybrid models.

    I have an XV Crosstrek, and bought it when it came out after test driving over 5 different cars in its class and SUV. the video is right, this little thing is a beast off​ road. living in Canada, snow is plentiful and it never gave up. my wife drives it now, as I have BMW x5 with a V8 engine in it. the only shortcoming on the xv is the small 2.0 engine. gives us a turbo or a V6 in it and I'll trade my Bimmer for it...I think.

    I own both a Subaru and a Land Rover, so I'm unbiased as I like both marques. But I'm very unimpressed with this dross. What did you do, forget to use the centre diff lock on the Land Rover? And I assume you pulled the fuse on the TCS for the Defender or deliberately speced one without it (unlikely based on it being a County Puma model). I'm not knocking the Subaru. But a 1990's Freelander 1 would conquer that course just as easily. And it's not exactly real world off road. I offer an open invite to Subaru UK to come and re-run this test against a Defender on real off road terrain. I can provide the location (south Bedfordshire) and a Defender.

    Nice. Now put a 10x5 trailer on the hook and jump in 20 inches of snow or mud to see the differences. You can't compare apples with pears mate. Subaru is a very good SUV, but is not an offroader.

    Great video. I think what people are really getting at is that after you account for ground clearance, this test demonstrates what the vast majority (90%) of real world users will do with their vehicles and thus the Subaru is a perfectly reasonable choice. On the other hand, this test only taxes about 20% of the LandRover's actual capability. Put that same Subaru through the same kind of environment plus 6 inches of mud/snow/sand, plus obstacles much more varied than here, and then do it at 2x speed for 500 or 1,000 miles and I'll take the Land Rover any day. All that said I drive a LR Disco II and bought my mother the Subaru. We're both quite content with our vehicles.

    So, when are you going off-road? I can drive all day long on a parking lot. Arrival/departure/ramp angles, air intake height? That's what matters. Stop comparing rally cars to off-roaders. Most places a real 4x4 goes, the Subaru designs will simply rip off their bumpers, or ruin their undercarriage.

      I agree. I have a Crosstrek, and before I go serious off-roading, I have to install a full skid plate underneath. It would help if I had a 3" lift so I don't damage the front or rear. Haven't seen any Crosstrek's yet with a lift.

      Subarus are low in general. I hated the sound of the undercarriage scrapping each time I drive in rough terrains. But I have to hand it to them, the ride is smooth and it climbs anything.

      Very wrong. Everything you just said is wrong lol. I see people doing crazy things with their crosstreks all the time here in arizona, and it navigates rocks and good sized boulders fine.

    I think Subaru make wonderful cars and if I didn't require a serious 4x4 with lift and snorkel for river crossings, then I'd have one in a flash. In my opinion they're ideal for both the city and country driver. I think it's their sure footed-ness, when the road gets wet, that appeals to me.

      I have a 2015 Impreza hatchback in the UK, one of those rare oddities with a 1.6 NA engine and manual transmission. Its a very comfy car, got it for all weather handling, it goes round corners at silly speeds if you so wish, it can easily lose more powerful cars on winding country roads.

    The overall weight, center of gravity, approach/central clearance/exit angles, and tires are the most important differences in the way any vehicle will perform on the same off-road terrain. Then it’s the manufacturer’s particular all or 4 wheel drive system that will either get you moving again after a stop, or struggle trying. There’s an endless amount of factors that play a part in what we deem “Better” than something else. Most people only care about their own personal experience and when you factor in the way money has the ability to change one’s perspective, whether it be from a point of an abundance of that of lack..... The individual must always be open to expanding their knowledge gained from their own personal experience, and accept that it has the ability to change as time passes. Relay this to the manufacturer directly, and if they are a company who takes these things seriously and knows the importance of quality over quantity, we will all enjoy our experience more. No matter what we end up choosing.

      Don't be so sure. Many of these new cross over vehicles and "suvs" do not sit nearly as high as you think they do, they don't have nearly the breakover or approach and departure angles you would think either. I'm not entirely familiar with the miata but again I wouldn't sell any vehicle short. I watched a guy take a old Buick through an obstical course at a off road capability display one year after the show closed and they were cleaning up.

      User Name I know they do not sit high. Most trucks and suvs from factory have bumpers and subframes as low or lower than your average sedan. My car sits about 3" of the ground, but I would just floor it and jump it over the obstacles. Hell the average sedan now in days could make it through the course, but it would be pretty brutal on the cars chassis.

      I know a Defender is the better off road car......but for a road car the XV's ability off road is very impressive. equipped with all terrain tires the XV will follow a Defender until the toughest offroad situation occur and that is quite an achievement. I doubt if any competitor can do the same. Try taking those steps with ur Audi A4 quattro.....

      it's TRACTION. subarus have smart traction and wheel slip controls. that's the only fucking thing. it's all computer controlled. the defender has lockers, that are mechanical and fail proof. there is no fucking way a computer controlled traction can compete even close in rugged conditions to diff locks. Fucking internet people are so fucking dumb it's so fucking annoying. i just picture fat, pasty suburban man / women lesbian boys with acne behind the keyboards. just absolute bollocks.

    I own an XV and a Defender. Testing on a concrete track is a poor place see the difference. Both are good at different things and overlaps in some. If I wanna go far but have some off road capacity I take the XV. If I need brute off road capacity I take the Defender.

    I have a dealership stock 2020 Outback and my daughters both have Jeep 4 door Wranglers. One is bone stock and the other is a highly modded one with a slight lift , big tires and lockers and disconnectable sway bar. I have no problem going anywhere they do and have gone a few they can’t. I put it in X mode and off I go. I am now a life long Susie owner.

      Here is a picture on a link below to show only one car in the car park. The two in the background where there the night before. hence the snow on the roofs.       it's lightness and smart traction control. Thats IT. there is nothing more. the chassis is not durable and strong like body on frame vehicles. it's all about traction control, but that traction control is limited to its independent suspension which is NOT rugged and durable and suited for on road use.
      people are tired of larping baby fat people trying the 'big bad outdoors' in their mom mobiles. it's just not the truth. only larping.

    My Subaru 2013 XV can definitely match near any vehicle off-road. I trust it more than I trust my truck which has greater clearance. I have the advantage of a manual transmission as well. Mine has 170k and have been in places others have told me I should not have gotten into and have never been stranded. My BEST vehicle ever and will likely purchase another eventually with a manual and perhaps a 2 inch lift. As a prospector and outdoorsman I need a solid ride. My Crosstrek is also a great highway car and has been coast to coast as well as North to South. Keep in mind I inspect my vehicles regularly and take very good care of them. Best from AZ.

      Graham Reid i agree the land rover is very capable off road, as thats what it was designed for, but it is charming, and does have a lot of appeal, but is a basic and rather agricultural car to drive on normal roads. As for the Subaru XV, they only fit fairly standard road tyres on it, although they are supposed to be an all season tyre, the tread on a panda 4x4 was better for muddy fields (i had one and its capability off road was impressive). So....glastonbury car choice? An XV with better tyres. Or a forester.

    Certainly a very capable vehicle but that comparison is totally pointless. A Defender is not a family vehicle and is designed for a very specific purpose. A comparison against a Discovery Sport if it had to be Land Rover would have been more appropriate.

    Two words need to be asked before a verdict is given...."longevity" and "maintenance". This video I can comment on with first hand experience. Our house is down a private lane with potholes, ruts etc. In 2002 we bought, from new, a Forester (wife school run and shopping cart) and a Defender 90 for my business (I tow heavy duty car trailers and other equipment). Both diesels and at similar cost. The Defender at the time we sold the Forester had done 3 times the Foresters mileage and when we worked out the mpg of both vehicles the Defender had an average of 23 mpg and the Forester 26 mpg. Over 15 years the Defender failed 2 of its12 MOT's (1 with shock absorber leaking, 1 with track rod end) and the Forester failed 4 (1 with suspension related, 1 with exhaust, 1 with chassis welding and 1 with intermittent hazard light switch). In total, the maintenance cost, including servicing, for the Forester (with several electrical units needing replaced at 8 years old) cost two and a half times the cost of the Defender. Another factor that would be important to some, but it wasn't to us, was that the residual value of the Defender was 6 times that of the Forester when we sold it......and the Defender is still going strong today. Look at the bigger picture and don't be fooled by the glossy sales pitch.

    Yes the Subaru is amazing, however, comparing the new Subaru to the Defender, is like comparing a toaster to a smartphone. Both are incredibly different!
    The Defender is built to be simple and to work. Good luck to any of your customers trying to fault-find when their new Subaru breaks down in the middle of nowhere.
    I love you as a brand, however in my opinion, this new car is pointless in modern society where off-roading is more of a hobby than a requirement. And as a hobbyist, I would rather the car which is simpler, and more likely to fail so I have some sort of challenge.
    I personally, don't see this selling too well here in the UK.

    Yeah but the defender has a real bumper made from metal so you can actually take it off road without worrying about getting your plastic bumper scratched up. The defender can drive through trees and bushes, cant do that in the Subaru without damage. Defender is a real offroader

    I like how half of the tests on here can be done by regular cars. The going over planks test, the banked curve and the speedbump tests can all be done by a regular FWD, or RWD car.I didn't see any offroad here. Not dissing Subaru, I've driven a few on snow and they were spectacular! Amazing grip and very good control. Where everyone else is crawling due to ice, or deep snow, you can drive by at 50+ kmh easily.
    But this track was not proper offroad. Come on Subaru, you know what polish offroad freaks do with regular Subarus, show us that. And the narrator should get his facts straight. In-line boxer engine?! Independent suspension on a Defender?! XD

    I think most 4x4 would walk that course my 2x4 Cummins dually wouldn't care about most of that course, now the uphill and side grade would be interesting but if I put a locker in my 8000lb pickup it would more then likely conquer it and my wrangler would just laugh its bumper off!

      +guy proulx yessir empty it weighs right around 4 tons, give or take a few hundred, depending on the scale

      +guy proulx 3500 I don't think they make 2500 duallys, I'll have to look that up its an 05 Dodge RAM 3500 5.9 Cummins 6 speed dually 2x4

      bosshoss69lee the only thing i could find for how much it weighs is the curb weight, 5919 lbs, couldn't find anything on the dry weight

    Subie is using black top tyres and defender using off-road tyres what happen to like for like. May be part2 set in a muddy field with same rubber fitted and see how that one turns out.

    Difficult obstacles, what simpleton designed that course? Any AWD car could tackle that easily, the amount of illogical videos on You Tube is expanding faster than the universe!
