      @@jackdren9974 Haha I think the Doug Score falls into a category of things in life I call "So Bad It's Good." At first I hated the Doug score, I agree that is makes no sense. But because Doug is a quirky & fun guy, it works because once I have the expectation that it's bad I go in wondering what random number he will assign cars and just laugh at it.

    absolutely one of the parts of Doug's success is his personality, I'm sure many of the subscribers who watch most everything he does share his curiousity and love for cars and seeing them in depth inside and out and that shared passion connects a lot of people to his videos

    58:00 The reason why we like to watch Doug so much is because the format makes you show the real ownership of an un obtain able car (for a lot of us anyway). And through him, we see what it would like to actually own a car. The quirks and features are known only to owners. And that contributes to the momentary ownership experience

    • @kinggrantking
      @kinggrantking 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      This is it for me exactly. Car reviewers, if they complain about anything, always complain about something you would only care about if you tracked the car on the weekends. Doug actually shows things I might actually take an interest in (or have a problem with!) if I were to TRULY ACTUALLY REALLY own the car.

    • @アマ-p2l
      @アマ-p2l 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      that's not the reason though. the reason for his success is he pleases the algorithm. matt is producing videos for drivers, doug idk anyone can watch his videos driving is a very small part of his videos. the most successful german YT channel is the one which people who don't even like cars watch, I think it's the exact same with doug. you can watch dougs videos without caring about driving at all, without even caring about cars just to see some quirks and features of your favorite status symbol, but the same audience wouldn't have a clue how to enjoy one takes on perfect roads even a part of the customers of the cars which matt reviews won't be able to enjoy one takes because they just want to own that car they don't care how it drives I used to think the same way if I got rich I would have simply bought an LP640 and it wouldn't matter if it drove like crap. the TST one takes are for people who not only appreciate the fast/unique cars but who also enjoy driving. and that's only a small part of the YT audience. it's mostly kids, people who don't even like cars, people who think cars are status symbols, I think drivers are a minority here. it's funny how matt said "maybe I don't interact with the viewers enough" or something like that because he's one of the only people on this platform who actually produces content which the viewers want instead of producing content that makes money or mainstream content to reach a wider audience.
      it's the top gear syndrome - top gear wasn't really a car show it was a comedy, traveling and shenanigan show and the car reviews and stig laps were the side dish. that's why they became the most successful show, most of their audience wasn't even into driving and didn't care that much about cars.

      I know that this is not going to be popular, but the ability to sit with my kids and watch a video that is not just filled with profanity is a huge part of why I love Doug. His enthusiasm is just infectious, he loves what he doesn’t I love that too.

    "When was the last time you saw a Maxima SE with a manual gearbox in operational condition"
    Funny story. I just recently bought a 1995 Maxima SE in Ruby Pearl with a manual gearbox back in March from of all things... the original owner (an older lady) who bought it new in 1995. Garage kept it's entire life, body and paint are in great shape minus 25 years of use, interior is nearly immaculate, virtually no rust except for the rad support (basically rust killed these cars). Car had 227k miles on it when I bought it and was still on the original clutch which me & my friend have since verified after replacing the clutch (clutch had Nissan stamped on it lol). The lady who owned this car should give master classes in how to drive a manual, because the clutch still had life left on it (what would have gone on the clutch was the springs), the flywheel was absolutely spotless (my friend just lightly sanded it). Car runs and drives way better than it has any right to and the lady who owned it gave me 10 years of repair bills along with the original window sticker in perfect condition (I nearly fell on the floor when she showed me).
    She was going to donate it to charity, but I got the car for $700. Best $700 I ever spent!

    I feel there are two major things that are the difference between Doug and Matt and why Doug's metrics are out-performing Matt by so much. Firstly, as Doug mentioned, his content isn't just for car people because he makes sure there is an entertaining/comedic element to his videos, less so now than a few years back but it definitely still there, compared to Matt's style which is always serious and about car guy details. Secondly, personality plays a huge part - Doug seems like a super approachable, funny guy which is liked by a broad range of viewers because he's so easy to watch, whereas Matt can come across as a bit brash and arrogant which won't bring non-car people back. As an example, if I'm watching youtube in bed, my girlfriend will almost always pause what she is watching and listen when she hears Doug's voice - can't say that about any other car youtuber.

    Wow!!....I was really enjoying this show but now I’m giving it a BIG thumbs down for the way the show ended. I know Matt was drinking and maybe his mouth became loose. I have been listening, watching and sharing The Smoking Tire (and other car shows) for years because I can escape from the trash talk and biased opinions of the general media. When I go to a music concert I don’t want the performer’s personal opinions. It ruins the experience. Doug Demuro has enough sense not to have diarrhea of the mouth because he knows it may affect his viewership. The Smoking Tire crew should stick to talking about cars and car culture and keep your personal political and social opinions to yourselves.
    Doug Demuro kept it classy. Matt Farrah lost a lot credibility. Zack... No fault towards you. You do what you have to do to keep your job.
    I’m probably going to reconsider my loyalty to The Smoking Tire.

    What sets apart Doug’s channel from others is he gives a detailed intro to vehicles one otherwise hasn’t seen, from a “tire kicking” perspective. That and he does have an engaging personality.
    Interesting cars, interesting “quirks and features” and an interesting personality.

    I'll tell you right now why Doug gets so many views: FORMAT and CONSISTENCY. People know what they're going to get and he gets into all the weird little details that car guys love. It's both super nerdy and esoteric but also very widely appealing to a huge spectrum of car people.

    I met Matt once at C&C and it didn’t come to me that, that was his lambo. I was driving a beat up 733i and so when I left I saw the red lambo leave so I followed and looked who was in it and there was Matt. So I followed him to a coffee shop and we talked a bit about cars. He was very impressed with the fact of the condition of that 733i for the price I paid for it. So much so that when a 3.0 CS came in to the same shop he laughed at that guy and said you could have had one of these for cheap. And I’ll have to meet Doug in the future. I hope I run into Matt and Doug in the future.

    For those that don't know, a Phaser is a common engine part. It's placed between the Camshaft timing chain sprocket and the Camshaft, to change it's timing relative to the Crankshaft, and to the Exhaust Cam on a DOHC engine. Which is referred to as Cam Phasing.
    Here are some examples of engines that use this technology:
    Honda i-VTEC
    Toyota VVT-i and VVT-l
    Nissan N-VCT / VVL
    Infiniti CVTCS / VVEL
    BMW Vanos
    Porsche Variocam
    Ford Ti-VCT / VCT
    General Motors DCVCP
    Fiat MultiAir
    To name a few...

    i've never specced a car but it's weird that people need to write about it rather than just spec their cars, that;s what makes it feel more for showing off rather than for personal taste (what wud b more personal than 100% ur spec?) so as Matt said wud definitely b of interest to a buyer but the way ppl r doing it makes me side more towards Doug's take
