  • How to paint a Pug using acrylics (Step 1) - blocking in layer - paint with me and tutorial.
    Here is a detailed real time tutorial on how I start a realistic style pug dog portrait using acrylics. This video focuses on the first blocking in layer and getting the first paint onto paper/canvas prior to building up your layers.
    I also just talk about a few bits and bobs in general so that there is not too much silence and also practise for me talking as I work and record. Yes I look and sound a little awkward but with your support, I can continue doing these and hopefully get over that in time. I hope you manage to take something from it. I am looking forward to doing tutorials of the final stages of my realism work but for now, the initial stages of producing a painting are also useful and we all have to walk before we can run (I am currently working on step 2 tutorial). I do hope to do plenty more of these if it is popular. I hope my Yorkshire accent is easy enough to understand also. I tried not to be too broad lol.
    Step 2 of this tutorial series is now uploaded here: • How to paint a pug in ...
    Step 3 of this tutorial series is now uploaded here: • How to paint realistic...
    I hope you can take something positive from it anyway...:)

    You are not speaking to ‘nobody’ I listen carefully and I just love your accent as much as I really enjoy your tuition on painting dog portraits. You are so ‘down to earth’. Just what we need! Thanks.

    Just found you. Love this as you explain things well. Please keep posting more dogs and cats. I have painted a few dogs and cats(self taught) since Covid. Hope to learn more details from your work. Btw I’m 76, and came from Lancashire to Canada when I was 7, so love an English accent.

    Brilliant videos and by your accent I’ll say hello neighbour ☺️ I’ve recently started painting animal portraits and never understood the blocking in stage - I’m currently painting a greyhound and the reference photo wasn’t great so I didn’t quite know where to start - before I knew it I was blocking in naturally and finally I get it! Loving your videos

    I think you do rather well, talking to yourself. It benefits me to ease drop. 😆. I see a border collie behind the pug. I hope you will paint one sometime. I have painted 2 in watercolor. Rough going. I would like to try in acrylic as well.

    Fantastic and informative video! You’re so talented. You mentioned your paper..where do you get it please? I just looked on Amazon and it’s so expensive, I’ve not used acrylics for years as mainly use pan pastels and pencils but wanted to give it a go x 🤗

    Those first markings we see, like the eyes, nose, outline of face - how do you get that? Are you just eye-balling it or do you use a copying technique? Love your videos, I’ve always found animals so difficult to paint!

    • @TmHudsonArt
      @TmHudsonArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The outline is drawn on a cheap piece of paper prior and then transferred onto the final piece..

    Hello, I enjoyed watch you paint. I have a few question regarding the painting of the pugs lower body fur. What color did you start with , was it gray or a gray brown mixture. Also, when you were adding more paint to the fur I couldn’t telling you were using a lighter color or if it was the wet paint just going over the drier paint that made it look lighter. Do you add water to your acrylic paint.
    Thank you 😊

    • @TmHudsonArt
      @TmHudsonArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi....since it was about 9 months since I painted it, I honestly can't remember what colours were used specifically. It would also vary depending on the dog and the lighting anyway so would not necessarily be the same colour combo in another painting of another pug. Likely, I did use black and some brown...maybe burnt umber for example. Can't remember for sure though. That is something where you have to learn to see colours in the ref or perhaps bring the ref photo up in somewhere like photoshop and use the colour picker to give you an idea of what colours are going on.
      Once I got my darks where they need to be, i tend to gradually go lighter to add the details leaving it until last for the brighest highlights and yes, i do add water. I could not get the acrylics to flow properly without some water...

    Wonderful video - I'm a watercolorist trying to learn opaque media. This was helpful, watching in real time.
    Do you only use paint out of the tube, or do you mix with water? Do you use mediums?

    • @TmHudsonArt
      @TmHudsonArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi...I so mix with water and also use a flow improver but don't use that all of the time. Funnily enough, i'd like to dabble more in watercolour and loosen up a little...

    I've only drawn with graphic and pastels. I might give painting a try after seeing this. Have you ever used oils? I'm just wondering what you like about acrylics. Thank you!

    • @TmHudsonArt
      @TmHudsonArt  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't used oils except for one painting assignment years ago at college....I'm talking mid 90s lol...
      It was another local artist that introduced me to acrylics....There's downsides to them for sure but I like the fast drying and ability to layer quickly and no smelly paint thinner...they are also more archival than oils...

    How do you do the shading? Are u using the same shade of black but diluted in water?

    • @TmHudsonArt

      Hi yes, where it isn't so black it is watered down.
