When playing games at very high settings, I notice smooth frame rate, but some scene, maybe cut scenes just suddenly drops frame rate for like 5 seconds and later return to normal. What causes it? Is it normal? Do I need to adjust some settings or is my laptop faulty? Thanks in anticipation.
@@davoncci hi David, thanks for watching my channel 😀. Cut scenes usually have their frame rate capped. My first thought was your hard drive as it will be reading the info from there. Did you l load the game on a spinning disk? Is it 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm. If it's the slower drive then that may be the cause. Mine had two sticks of RAM and I'm sure yours does too but wanted to make sure.
@@davoncci I would love to buy nitro 5. but it is not possible to have a laptop that is fast for mug, daily internet. the BASW keys do not bother you with just e-mailing browsing etc .. they have thicker edges and therefore burn harder or can I better buy lenovo l340 or y530? what do you recommend me nitro5 is now in super promo in belgium because we work here with azerty I can not enjoy your low prices unfortunately enough

I am so impressed by Acer with this laptop, performance-wise at least; definitely not design wise, lol. Near RTX 2060 performance with a 1660 Ti? for $1200? Not too shabby Acer.
But the 2070 MQ model is overpriced though. I can get an Omen 15 with a full 2070 (Not MQ) and a 9th Gen i7 for less than $1500 (tho at the expense of decent storage). Last time I checked HP's website, a TB HDD with a 16GB Optane M.2 cost just around $1500. Same display, and a bigger battery too. Dunno why the Helio 300 with 2070 MQ costs so damn much. Edit: So I just rechecked both models. The Helios at $2400 (with an actual full 2070, if the website is correct) has 32GB RAM, is a 17" and comes with Windows 10 Pro. Speccing up the Omen 15 with the same OS and RAM, the price comes up to $1900. Besides the size difference, I can't see anything else that would make up for a $500 price difference. From what I can see, the Predator doesn't even have ThunderBolt. Last year's prices were neck and neck, dunno what's up this year. I'm really disappointed because I wanted the blue accents of the Helios (and a Windows Precision touchpad (dammit HP!)) but that price tag compared to the Omen is a turn off for me.
Talked with Acer on facebook They created a guide to do the HDD upgrade yourself as not everyone have Acer support in their countries to do it. They also permitted it to open the back and do the upgrade without risk to my warranty and I have records of them stating them You would need to contact them for permission to do the same without risking your warranty then you should be good
FYI: It’s illegal for companies in the US to void your warranties if a person rips that sticker off for self-repairs or whatever reason. This is just scummy, and bad practice. Seriously, look it up and don’t be afraid to call companies on their BS if they want to void your warranty

Your reviews are wonderful, I've become a new subscriber this week while trying to find my next laptop :) One small suggestion; could you time code your videos? Sometimes there's certain parts of a review in particular that I'm interested in.
Ray tracing is the new fad right now. Honestly, it just makes everything look super oily, to the point where I feel like America would want to invade it. No one needs ray tracing. It needs to develop more for anither decade or so.

I love the new blue/black theme. The red/black theme is so overdone and screams "gamer" a bit too hard. I'm really surprised to see a 1660 ti and i7 in a 1200$ laptop. Acer is making smart changes. Great review as always! I've been following since you had 3000 subscribers and now you have almost 30,000! Keep it up man, any questions I ever have about a new laptop I go to your channel first to see if you have a review up. I have recommended so many things to friends and even linked your videos to them. This is usually met with "Wow, I've never seen a review go so in depth on temperatures and undervolting!" Splendid review Stephen! The 1660 Ti Helios 300 is the second best value gaming laptop out there, only the 1660 Ti Legion Y740 is better due to G-Sync. Finally mainstream laptops at reasonable prices, kudos to Acer for dual channel RAM and undervolting, shame about lack of G-Sync, would make the Predator Helios the perfect gaming laptop!
I agree, GSYNC should be included. But Helios advantage over Legion is the storage. Helios has 3 vs 2 of legion which is a plus plus for me, Dont know why manufacturers cant put, 2 m.2nvme slots on their board

i agree that the HP Omen 15t delivers a great value as you can get an RTX for as low as $1200 with 9th gen intel and a 144Hz panel but the red color dominating is no longer attractive for many... and i wonder whether they stick with their previous model in order to improve cpu and gpu without adding cost. However this might lead to thermal problems as clearly the new cpu and gpu is hotter than previous gen

From somebody who owns this exact model. The coolerboost is to increase max speed which will not occur on auto and likely only be seen if you are using max fan. However I have never needed to use max to remain cool. That being said auto is not quite enough to be comfortable on it's own I would suggest using custom and doing some testing on your own. Also turbo mode is only meant to be used while the laptop is plugged in

@@barca_plays8726 so far I could run most games in ultra smoothly as a console and visually appealing. Although speakers are the issue but wearing headphones and playing ain't much of an issue. GTA V does lag around vegetation area so better keep the vegetation medium or high. it's huge difference as compared to my PS4 and I don't regret selecting this PC for my college.
@موجز كروي if you put max fan the fans tends to interfere with the speaker .but still the audio is audible .if you wanted a louder sound you will need to get a headphone or speaker.
@@daxfitz yea ikr... although you have a thunderbolt3, you need to spend quite a lot of money for that extra external gpu and to be honest, why would you need an external gpu when you are buying a gaming laptop in the first place
@@MrKevlad100 an external gpu is quite big to be honest and if u want something future proof... the best thing to buy is a desktop. Eventually the external GPU would be outdated as well, whilst u can upgrade ur desktop any time
1200$ is paying top dollar?! C'mon, only content creators or pros use TB3 and the Helios 300 is a GAMING laptop not Pro Nvidia Studio/MSI Prestige/Razer Blade/Gigabyte Aero laptop. TB3 accesories are super expensive compared to USB 3 ones, like cost twice as much. So unless data transfer and optimal data workflow is required in your job to increase your productivity in order make more money TB3 is not needed. TB3 is an investement not leisure, USB 3.1 gen 2 10 gbs is plenty fast for the average joe transferring video, it being 10 to 20 min slower ain't gonna hurt your bottom line.
Acer predator Helios 300, now that's what I would call my favourite type of laptop. When looking up about all specks and then comparing them I think the Helios 300 would be a perfectly good laptop for gaming and even video editing. Also with a perfectly good travel time space. For a nice budget all in all.
Great review so far! I just want your advice for which one to choose for my needs as architecture student. Between helios 300 Rtx 2060 or Rtx 2070 max q which cost 200$extra. Is the extra 2Vram on rtx2070 max q will effect the performance for editing and design 3D softwares? Which one to choose wisely? Thanks in advance:))
Great review as always! Acer stepped up their game, but at the same price, I've got a Zephyrus gm501 full 1070 and 8750 that has only one issue, just for the thick bezels the resell value will be lower. My next laptop will be a 17" for sure, considering that I've tried a razer blade pro 1060, that was so cool (in every sense haha...)
sachbayaya I forgot to mention that it was used like new, for me older (not that old) laptops are still good, the design in newer ones is better but if the previous model was nice you won't fell much difference. Display upgrades are one of the major factor in considering new models though, they are better. Yes an rtx (from 2070) is more powerful at the same temp, but for me it's too soon to get one. Newer CPUs with more than 6 core are hot and you really need to stress your laptop to see the advantage of having it (in productivity). I hope that future cooling tech and noise will be improved.
I wouldn't if I were you. My brother built a time machine in his shed and I braved his dodgy handy work to journey into the future to buy this. First off I was nearly killed by a silent electric car, van thing and then they were all sold out. I brought back a futuristic hologram tablet instead and now it doesn't work. Just wait two years and pick it up on Amazon. Save yourself the grief.

Just bought this thing for $1000 due to prime day. I've been browsing around for laptops the past few weeks and instantly bought it due to the sale. It was a steal compared to the Asus zephyruz g. Upgrading from a 17' 8.8lbs 2014 Asus g751jt with a gtx 970m 3GB and an Intel i7 4710hq 4c/8t at 2.5ghz/3.5ghz boost with a 60hz panel. Bought it for $1500 at the time. Gaming laptops have come a long way.

Hi Dan ! Thanks, glad you liked it :) That Intel 660p PCIe m.2 drive I put in my Triton is doing well and its cheap for a 2TB one, I favour it over a SATA one.
I like having the SD card reader and the screen on the Omen is brighter and much less back light bleed. I do prefer the Predator sense software though. My Omen 15T is running great. I have the i9/2080MQ and you have the option for a 4k or 240 hz display. If you are just after a 144 Hz panel and the helios is cheaper certainly go for that, its a nice laptop. Note that HP still have the 10% off using code HOLIDAY10PC.

Hey Steven, Helios 300 1660 ti or Triton 500 (8th gen) with 2060 ? Which one should I buy? In my country, they both cost exactly the same (give or take $50) depending on the retailer. I am so confused. And, I know you've had the Triton 500 for a while. How'd you like it so far? Let's say, my primary use would be: Gaming, Video Editing (top priority), and streaming.
I love my Triton 500. It is light weight and slim. Better build quality over the Helios. I opened mine up, repasted and added more storage - and this is the main disadvantage - it is much harder to do because of the inverted motherboard and for that reason alone I would recommend the Helios 300. After the repaste it runs great and now I have 2.5TB of NVME storage, but if you aren't comfortable with doing that then best get the Helios...

Hi there, I came across your channel and the information you give out on laptops is amazing! I've watched your Helios 300 vidoes and they have helped a lot! I got mine, which is the same model(except it comes with 8GB of ram instead of 16GB) a couple of weeks ago and I'm really happy with it! I have a question about the power consumption though . . . I heard you say in the video you didn't get any battery drain while it was plugged in, although it was on on the edge of consuming from the adapter at 179W, so anymore would have started using the battery too. Well, I noticed that while playing GTA 5(the only game I have) for long periods, the laptop battery drains(only by a few percent) even though the laptop is plugged in to the mains. The thing that's confusing though is that sometimes I can play for a long period and the battery hasn't drained . . . Couple of things I was thinking could be causing the drain are: The temperature of the room is higher when draining occurs(CPU around 80-85c)? when there is no drain it's in the high 60s to mid to high 70s Using a cooling pad, if you say that a full workload uses 179W, perhaps the cooling pad is pushing over that? Do you have any ideas what could be causing the drain? Hope you can help
Hi there ! Thanks for watching my videos :) Sure, if the temperature is higher than usually means the wattage is higher to give a higher boost clock. Other factors could be what you have connected via USB as they all draw power, so a cooling pad plugged in to a USB port will be power the fan and/lights on that too. You could adjust it my lowering the PL1 and PL2 values via Throttlestop or XTU so the CPU uses less power or by undervolting, that will help lower the watts too.

Last night I was playing on it for a few hours, this time just using custom fans at around 80% and not the cooling pad, and the room's temperature was low and the power didn't drain while it was plugged in, which was good. Caliminte Daniel Hi there ! Glad you like my videos 👍 I am sure the Helios 300 is a fine laptop . The GE75 is indeed one of my favorite 17” laptops from this year but I think the Eluktronics Mech 17 has it beat. They use some proprietary hardware that boosts the 2060 model to past 2070 MQ performance and it is much cheaper. It has a mechanical keyboard and a good screen, SD card reader too. I reviewed it here m.th-cam.com/video/4sG-squH7QQ/w-d-xo.html Also, I am currently testing the HP Omen 17, its 2070 is a 115w part with Gsync but battery life won't be great. It's going to take some tweaking to get it running great too really
Nice vid as always. I just bought a renewed version of Dell g7 7590. Is there a difference between renewed and refurbished. These are it's specs- i7 8750h rtx 2070 mq, 16 GB ram( don't know if it's a dual channel).

Nice comparison, it certainly is extracting Max performance out of hardware. But 90c on Max fans is bad, its your custom tweak in end which is face saving for Helios. Pubg is lite game n 90c is bad stock performance unless tweaked
Idk much about gaming pc's, but I'm looking for a gaming laptop. What are some great options that can run games at the best graphic settings & be able to record/stream gameplay smoothly? Aiming for a price range under $2k. It will also be for daily use as well, school, work, travel, video editing, movies, etc. I was thinking about the Helios 300 (either 15" or 17"), Triton 500, or the Razer Blade 15 or 17. I would prefer a 15". Not too sure what to get though. Any other suggestions?

Hey OWNorDisown ! I really love your reviews ! In your opinion, based on performance, quality and cooling, is the better option the Acer Predator Helios 300 17,3" 144 hz, i7 9750H, RTX 2070 MaxQ and 16gb ram or the Asus Rog Strix Scar 3 17,3" 144 hz, i7 9750H and RTX 2070 ?
To give you an idea on frame rate difference: Far Cry 5 Ultra setting the full 2070 in the Strix will be at about 98 fps, the 2070 MQ will be at 89 fps so about 10% extra. You will get better battery life in the Helios. I don't think the Strix has Gsync. It may just come down to price vs battery life vs 10% extra performance..

Like I say, I haven't tried the 17" model of either. The 15" Helios 300 is fairly decent, typical 144 Hz level of about 96% sRGB and 330 Nits, good visibility at lower brightness levels but subject to back light bleed.

Unfortunately my Helios 300 512GB has suffered an SSD failure right outside of the 30 day return period. Currently going through Acer to take it back. I really liked it while it worked...

Edit: So I just rechecked both models. The Helios at $2400 (with an actual full 2070, if the website is correct) has 32GB RAM, is a 17" and comes with Windows 10 Pro. Speccing up the Omen 15 with the same OS and RAM, the price comes up to $1900. Besides the size difference, I can't see anything else that would make up for a $500 price difference. From what I can see, the Predator doesn't even have ThunderBolt.
Last year's prices were neck and neck, dunno what's up this year. I'm really disappointed because I wanted the blue accents of the Helios (and a Windows Precision touchpad (dammit HP!)) but that price tag compared to the Omen is a turn off for me.
1660 Ti and GTX 1070 for laptops perform better than RTX 2060. This is not the case for PCs, only for laptops.

Actually, the webcam looked pretty good, not like the potato cams on some laptops.

They created a guide to do the HDD upgrade yourself as not everyone have Acer support in their countries to do it.
They also permitted it to open the back and do the upgrade without risk to my warranty and I have records of them stating them
You would need to contact them for permission to do the same without risking your warranty then you should be good

Quick tip: you don't need raytracing
Ray tracing is the new fad right now. Honestly, it just makes everything look super oily, to the point where I feel like America would want to invade it.
No one needs ray tracing. It needs to develop more for anither decade or so.

I love the new blue/black theme. The red/black theme is so overdone and screams "gamer" a bit too hard. I'm really surprised to see a 1660 ti and i7 in a 1200$ laptop. Acer is making smart changes. Splendid review Stephen! The 1660 Ti Helios 300 is the second best value gaming laptop out there, only the 1660 Ti Legion Y740 is better due to G-Sync. Finally mainstream laptops at reasonable prices, kudos to Acer for dual channel RAM and undervolting, shame about lack of G-Sync, would make the Predator Helios the perfect gaming laptop!
I agree, GSYNC should be included. But Helios advantage over Legion is the storage. Helios has 3 vs 2 of legion which is a plus plus for me, Dont know why manufacturers cant put, 2 m.2nvme slots on their board

i agree that the HP Omen 15t delivers a great value as you can get an RTX for as low as $1200 with 9th gen intel and a 144Hz panel but the red color dominating is no longer attractive for many... and i wonder whether they stick with their previous model in order to improve cpu and gpu without adding cost. However this might lead to thermal problems as clearly the new cpu and gpu is hotter than previous gen

From somebody who owns this exact model. The coolerboost is to increase max speed which will not occur on auto and likely only be seen if you are using max fan. However I have never needed to use max to remain cool. That being said auto is not quite enough to be comfortable on it's own I would suggest using custom and doing some testing on your own. Also turbo mode is only meant to be used while the laptop is plugged in

@@barca_plays8726 so far I could run most games in ultra smoothly as a console and visually appealing. Although speakers are the issue but wearing headphones and playing ain't much of an issue. GTA V does lag around vegetation area so better keep the vegetation medium or high. it's huge difference as compared to my PS4 and I don't regret selecting this PC for my college.

1200$ is paying top dollar?! C'mon, only content creators or pros use TB3 and the Helios 300 is a GAMING laptop not Pro Nvidia Studio/MSI Prestige/Razer Blade/Gigabyte Aero laptop. TB3 accesories are super expensive compared to USB 3 ones, like cost twice as much. So unless data transfer and optimal data workflow is required in your job to increase your productivity in order make more money TB3 is not needed. TB3 is an investement not leisure, USB 3.1 gen 2 10 gbs is plenty fast for the average joe transferring video, it being 10 to 20 min slower ain't gonna hurt your bottom line.
Acer predator Helios 300, now that's what I would call my favourite type of laptop. When looking up about all specks and then comparing them I think the Helios 300 would be a perfectly good laptop for gaming and even video editing. Also with a perfectly good travel time space. For a nice budget all in all.

Yes, its still a great laptop and in truth the CPU maintains a higher clock rate I found.
Great review as always! Acer stepped up their game, but at the same price, I've got a Zephyrus gm501 full 1070 and 8750 that has only one issue, just for the thick bezels the resell value will be lower.
My next laptop will be a 17" for sure, considering that I've tried a razer blade pro 1060, that was so cool (in every sense haha...)

sachbayaya I forgot to mention that it was used like new, for me older (not that old) laptops are still good, the design in newer ones is better but if the previous model was nice you won't fell much difference.
Display upgrades are one of the major factor in considering new models though, they are better.
Yes an rtx (from 2070) is more powerful at the same temp, but for me it's too soon to get one. Newer CPUs with more than 6 core are hot and you really need to stress your laptop to see the advantage of having it (in productivity).
I hope that future cooling tech and noise will be improved.

Just bought this thing for $1000 due to prime day. I've been browsing around for laptops the past few weeks and instantly bought it due to the sale. It was a steal compared to the Asus zephyruz g.
Upgrading from a 17' 8.8lbs 2014 Asus g751jt with a gtx 970m 3GB and an Intel i7 4710hq 4c/8t at 2.5ghz/3.5ghz boost with a 60hz panel. Bought it for $1500 at the time. Gaming laptops have come a long way.
In my country the base model starts from $ 1300 so not really a budget choice. Anyways nice vid and I'm waiting for full review of Nitro 5

Hi, I'm torn between the Helios 300 and the Omen 15t. Which one would you recommend?
I like having the SD card reader and the screen on the Omen is brighter and much less back light bleed. I do prefer the Predator sense software though. My Omen 15T is running great. I have the i9/2080MQ and you have the option for a 4k or 240 hz display. If you are just after a 144 Hz panel and the helios is cheaper certainly go for that, its a nice laptop. Note that HP still have the 10% off using code HOLIDAY10PC.

Helios 300 1660 ti or Triton 500 (8th gen) with 2060 ? Which one should I buy? In my country, they both cost exactly the same (give or take $50) depending on the retailer. I am so confused. And, I know you've had the Triton 500 for a while. How'd you like it so far?
Let's say, my primary use would be: Gaming, Video Editing (top priority), and streaming.
I love my Triton 500. It is light weight and slim. Better build quality over the Helios. I opened mine up, repasted and added more storage - and this is the main disadvantage - it is much harder to do because of the inverted motherboard and for that reason alone I would recommend the Helios 300. After the repaste it runs great and now I have 2.5TB of NVME storage, but if you aren't comfortable with doing that then best get the Helios...

I came across your channel and the information you give out on laptops is amazing! I've watched your Helios 300 vidoes and they have helped a lot! I got mine, which is the same model(except it comes with 8GB of ram instead of 16GB) a couple of weeks ago and I'm really happy with it! I have a question about the power consumption though . . . I heard you say in the video you didn't get any battery drain while it was plugged in, although it was on on the edge of consuming from the adapter at 179W, so anymore would have started using the battery too. Well, I noticed that while playing GTA 5(the only game I have) for long periods, the laptop battery drains(only by a few percent) even though the laptop is plugged in to the mains. The thing that's confusing though is that sometimes I can play for a long period and the battery hasn't drained . . .
Couple of things I was thinking could be causing the drain are:
The temperature of the room is higher when draining occurs(CPU around 80-85c)? when there is no drain it's in the high 60s to mid to high 70s
Using a cooling pad, if you say that a full workload uses 179W, perhaps the cooling pad is pushing over that?
Do you have any ideas what could be causing the drain?

Hi there ! Thanks for watching my videos :) Sure, if the temperature is higher than usually means the wattage is higher to give a higher boost clock. Other factors could be what you have connected via USB as they all draw power, so a cooling pad plugged in to a USB port will be power the fan and/lights on that too. You could adjust it my lowering the PL1 and PL2 values via Throttlestop or XTU so the CPU uses less power or by undervolting, that will help lower the watts too.

Last night I was playing on it for a few hours, this time just using custom fans at around 80% and not the cooling pad, and the room's temperature was low and the power didn't drain while it was plugged in, which was good. Caliminte Daniel Hi there ! Glad you like my videos 👍 I am sure the Helios 300 is a fine laptop . The GE75 is indeed one of my favorite 17” laptops from this year but I think the Eluktronics Mech 17 has it beat. They use some proprietary hardware that boosts the 2060 model to past 2070 MQ performance and it is much cheaper. It has a mechanical keyboard and a good screen, SD card reader too.

Also, I am currently testing the HP Omen 17, its 2070 is a 115w part with Gsync but battery life won't be great. It's going to take some tweaking to get it running great too really

Nice comparison, it certainly is extracting Max performance out of hardware. But 90c on Max fans is bad, its your custom tweak in end which is face saving for Helios. Pubg is lite game n 90c is bad stock performance unless tweaked

Hey OWNorDisown ! I really love your reviews ! In your opinion, based on performance, quality and cooling, is the better option the Acer Predator Helios 300 17,3" 144 hz, i7 9750H, RTX 2070 MaxQ and 16gb ram or the Asus Rog Strix Scar 3 17,3" 144 hz, i7 9750H and RTX 2070 ?
To give you an idea on frame rate difference: Far Cry 5 Ultra setting the full 2070 in the Strix will be at about 98 fps, the 2070 MQ will be at 89 fps so about 10% extra. You will get better battery life in the Helios. I don't think the Strix has Gsync. It may just come down to price vs battery life vs 10% extra performance..

Like I say, I haven't tried the 17" model of either. The 15" Helios 300 is fairly decent, typical 144 Hz level of about 96% sRGB and 330 Nits, good visibility at lower brightness levels but subject to back light bleed.
Thinking of buying but 17” version. Will results be same on it or 2060 makes more sense on 17”.Thx

Can I use the mini display port to an ultrawide external monitor and still get 144hz? Sorry for my ignorance but I cant find a definitive answer for the 2019 helios model
They sell a few upgraded models with 400 gigabytes now as well.
Unfortunately my Helios 300 512GB has suffered an SSD failure right outside of the 30 day return period. Currently going through Acer to take it back.

I think it has a good chance , I dont have the laptop now but I think there is clearance and the rubber caddy should fit it ok.
