  • I gotta say this , I see a lot of TH-cam videos where turners turn bowl with big splits and cracks and admire it... Its a bad habit and practice to promote turning stuff with dangerous defects.... PLEASE BE CAREFULL AND YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY...USE WHAT EVER OF SAFETY GEAR THAT IS AVAILABLE TO YOU....
    BUT NO GEAR WILL EVER SUBSTITUTE COMMON SENSE....
    STAY SAFE

    When I started turning an old woodturner told me "Just remember that accidents are over before you relalise they are happening". I discovered he was right a few times.

    This is a good reminder, especially for turners who use found wood and spalted wood. My face shield has been gathering dust and I think it’s time to start using it again. I’m glad you weren’t hurt!

    This is one of the hardest lessons to learn in wood turning. I am thankful that whenever I have had something come off the lathe I have not been injured, but it is easy to forget how dangerous wood turning can be. Thank for sharing, and I am grateful you were not hurt.

    I always position my on off switch on the right hand side of the lathe, partly for this reason. If anything goes wrong, I want to move away from the wood to turn the lathe off, not be in the firing line. Glad you are ok and thanks for posting this and all your other videos.

    Had same thing happen . Oak platter separated , 1500 rpm , way too fast, standing directly in firing line initially, hit four inches above left wrist deformed but not broken. My fault completely. Wood had splits, I was standing directly in the firing line. Felt link someone hit my arm with the full swing of a baseball bat. Hospital, physical therapy, angry wife. Definitely not worth it. Very glad you’re alright Tomislav. Thank you for posting this Safety Video.

    Hello Tomislav, this video is important for me. I am the one that turns whatever lousy scrap of everything… cracks included. Wood is expensive here where I live and it makes me nervous to waste even a piece.
    I had some things breaking and flying away. Up to now I managed to stay away from the fire line and I have not been hit, but I would not bet this luck would last. I always have a face shield on.
    The most surprising and scary cracks were for resin pouches that created a longitudinal crack. Basically a crack that runs in the same direction of the diameter.
    The bowl literally exploded, I have found pieces everywhere.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are other sources of wood, here is expensive as well but I would really suggest to stay away from cracks and splits , it only need ones to be bad.... Just me safe and take good care what goes on the lathe 😀

      I am thinking to assemble a drying box, so I can harvest my own wood and be in control of the costs of it. I could rough turn the pieces and then allow them to dry in the box. Any idea about an easy model for this?

    Very glad no injuries. Those chunks have caused stitches, near deaths, and at least one death that I can bring to mind. Lynne Yamaguchi nearly lost an eye and has severely reduced vision in that eye, and some cognitive issues. A turner named Joan Kelly ended up in the hospital and succumbed to, I think, blood loss and brain injuries.
    Soon enough after I started turning bowls, a lovely chunk went flying past my head. Since then, I wear a polycarbonate (not! acetate!) face shield when roughing out bowls (and sometimes large long-grain; think urns). These shields are relatively inexpensive. At least in the US. A mere fraction of the cost of a trip to the emergency room. I was lucky with that first blow-up, back in the 90s.
    Also fortuitous that you recorded the near catastrophe and have graciously unloaded yet another quality video!
    Keep em coming.

      @@tomislavtomasicwoodturning -One thought came to mind, had you not put the wood on with the spindle so 'fast', it might have remained intact until you did a tighten up check with the piece stationary, as I see Richard do so often-maybe the difference between turning for a living and turning for teaching?? Easy for me to be wise after the event, but I am pleased you have shown this as I am sure many more of your viewers will take note and be extra careful. Stay safe my friend. My new lathe has its on/off & speed control on the tailstock side, which I think is a safer place for it. On the headstock one is really in the firing line in many instances, less so moving towards the tailstock. Just a thought for wood lathe manufacturers to perhaps have a think about.

    You are very lucky that piece hit you in the torso and not in the face. I don't buy the idea that the piece came flying off "low" rather than "high" has to do with the spindle speed. The piece came off where it came off, and it could just as easily flown off and hit the wall behind the lathe or gone the other way and knocked out some of your teeth, regardless of rpm.
    It's impossible to stay out of the "line of fire" 100% of the time, so I always wear a full face shield (and safety glasses) when turning green blanks because defects are hardest to see in chainsawn (or even bandsawn) surfaces, and just because there are no cracks in the end doesn't mean there aren't any in the middle.
    It would be safer to wear a full shield all the time, but I confess I mostly do not for finish turning and smaller work.
    One might think that the more we practice our craft, the safer we should be, and obviously to some extent that's true. But as we get faster and faster at repetitive tasks (like roughing out), we also get more vulnerable to having our attention wander - and that's when danger so often strikes.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Think of bowls as a propeler, the more the speed the more velosity and travel it will get.... That is why when I core out if the speed is low the core just gently comes down on the bed vs. high it will shot out high.... You are right about safety and face shields..... Thankfully some can learn from my mistake and prevent painfull day.... Thank you for comment and watching 🤗

    • @9thousandfeet
      @9thousandfeet 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      While the speed of anything that breaks loose is certainly proportional to the spindle speed, the direction in which a piece flies off is not.
      If the fracture occurs when the piece is at the top (ie, the piece breaks off when it's at the 12 o-clock position) it will fly off horizontally toward you. If it's at 6 o-clock it will fly horizontally away from you. At 3 o-clock it will go straight up and maybe break an overhead lamp (don't ask me how I know that).
      But if it's at about 1 or 2 o-clock, it will hit you right in the mouth if you're unlucky enough to be in the line or fire.
      What happens to a core that is released when coring out is not the same as what happens to a piece that breaks loose from the periphery of a spinning blank. A core which breaks loose will just spin out and land on the bed. It might race around a bit if it's spinning real fast, because its motion (its energy) is rotational not linear, but that's about it.
      The motion of a chunk breaking loose from the edge of a spinning blank will be linear, and anyone in the way will have a problem.

    • @briangustin3745
      @briangustin3745 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@9thousandfeet Yes. This should be sticky posted or something. Where the chunk flies is nothing to do with the speed it is rotating at , once it STARTS OUT, it can go anywhere. However as it follows its trajectory , it will take a lower trajectory at lower speeds , which is where the "Myth" comes in to - However, standing directly in front of the piece like tom was, that close to the piece, like you said he could have been hit in the face, no matter what RPM it was spinning at. Lower RPM might have resulted in less damage (less kinetic energy) but still. It's like playing russian roulette by spinning the gun on your finger until the gun fires - where the gun is pointing when it fires determines where the bullet goes, after which gravity vs. kinetic energy takes over (resulting in trajectory). I have had bowls fly apart on me a couple times (one chunk just missed my ear and it was spinning at 600 RPM while I was sanding) but never had a fresh blank come apart because unlike Tom and others I have seen, I do NOT start a blank onto a screw chuck by running the lathe! I manually screw it on while lathe is stopped, then I give it a good tap with my gouge to test for any cracking BEFORE turning lathe on - Unless you have a perfectly flat face on the blank already, the screw chuck can actually cause the blank to split as it pulls the blank up to the face of the chuck....
      Long story short, I agree with you entirely, and would never recommend anyone try to mount blanks to the lathe as Tom, and some other notable popular turners do. It only has to happen ONCE, and that ONCE might also be your last and only (because you could end up dead on the floor before anyone even realized anything was happening)
