Someone with insider knowledge here, don't work for valve but have contacts on the inside. This ban wave was planned months before #FixTF2 was even announced. It just takes time to document all the bots with a 99% accuracy, and there were folks building lists of the bots with UUID's for this ban wave.
Basically, since valve lacks in manpower it took a long ass time to be able to document all the bots that could be found and their hosters. I've been told legal action may be being taken on them, but that's hearsay at this current moment in time. The reason valve was radio silent about this is because, obviously, if they said "oh yeah we're working on a manual ban wave" then the botters would just go-to-ground and it wouldn't be as effective
Seems coincidental that they did this at the SAME time of this movement.
@@wekasuwi The ban wave was prepped for 6 months ago, it was just done now because it solves 2 problems; 1. Sends a message to the bot hosters and cheaters on a stage where multiple media outlets are actively staring and 2. It sends a message to the community that valve isn't just sending out 1 tweet and some minor bug fixes.
Granted, there's still going to be some bot accounts because nobody is perfect and 80% of the work was done by machine learning but not enough to make a significant impact.
Cheaters were given manual VAC bans, this has been confirmed. To quote my source "We didn't ban all the potential cheaters we detected because that would lead to a lot of false positives, but we did ban those who were dumb enough to share themselves cheating on youtube or discord"

Apparently Valve had been working on this since even before the first SaveTF2 movement, they wanted to roll it silently just like they did with CS:GO but they seem to have done a 180 in their approach now
the youtuber that said that rumor has been disputed and can't state his source, so probably not

I don't think we should attack valve until they become a problem again. If we've do valves just gonna think "they attack us even though we fixed it. Doesn't matter what we do. If we're gonna get the same result anyhow why bother putting in the work?"

I think part of why they were silent about it was that they didn't want the bot hosters to be prepared, I guess. Or maybe it wouldn't matter either way, but yeah.

I suspect that all of this has been -- slowly -- in the works since SaveTF2, but the timeline might have been moved up, perhaps from Scream Fortress, in response to TF2 and in time for the summer content.

1:54 actaully this is standard uhm tuesday maintenance so yeah normal 16k drop they did ban 99% of the bots
