  • The Ultimate Universe has returned, sorta kinda, Earth 6160 has been reshaped by the Maker. It's a world where heroes have had their paths diverted and into this universe enters a whole new take on the X-Men. Peach Momoko writes and illustrates a story about Hisako Ichiki a.k.a Armor as she comes into her powers as a young girl in Japan. This story has captivated some and left others with some questions. We discuss it all here on Casually Comics!

I'm not overly familiar with the mutants made after 2000. I'd have to say Emma Frost because I don't like the extremely power psychic that can turn into diamond thing being logical also I like hear more as a villain and I don't like she became a rebound girl for Scott Summers.

      - What are you reading?
      - The X-Men. It's one of my favorites.
      - What do you like about it?
      - For one thing, I like their variety of powers. This one controls the weather, this one shoots energy beams from his eyes, this one can turn his body into metal, this one can walk through walls...
      - And that one?
      - ...

I think that far too many people expected this to have a set team from the get-go and forgot this was building the mutants of this universe from the ground up; no school in Westchester, no Xavier, no Magento. Just kids having to figure their powers out all on their own (which is relatable, ngl).

But if there's no team then it isn't really X-Men, it's more of Ultimate Mutants. As long as a team of mutants who live together and are a family shows up I'm fine with how it starts.

As to the question of whether the art style is too different and if Marvel needs a house style - I remember when Jack Kirby was working for DC in his pre-Fantastic Four days. DC had a house style and they kept insisting that he change his artwork to fit it. Jack Kirby of all people! That is a big reason why he left DC and went to work for Marvel. That and the dust up over Kirby's Sky Masters comic strip. (The greatest "what if?" story in comics history!)

Also, kind of off topic, but i read Unstoppable Doom Patrol recently and it's very X-meny. I think it's really fun when a franchise is created taking inspiration from another one, but then the first take reference back. I already like Doom Patrol more, if an author is able to do the social commentary that X-men is able to do while also diving into the bizarre and insane like Doom Patrol does, I may have my favorite comic ever.

Comics don't have to look or be told one way, even big mainstream ones. This is why I hate the New 52: It rebooted the Post-Crisis continuity when there was no need to, and its been the catalyst for numerous annoying continuity shifts and decisions that make things extremely complicated for no reason, like the now yearly Crisis's, or N52 Superman's death and merger.

      @adrianomoraes5992 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I honestly never got what was the problem that led to the first crisis on infinite earths and created the whole universe reboot thing.
At that point there was something like 4 or 5 universes but mainly you'd only hear of Earth 1 and Earth 2 during the annual Justice League meets Justice Society crossover. It wasn't really that complicated.
EVERYTHING that came after Crisis got way more complicated than any problem they had before. Legion of Superheroes turned into a complete mess.

I won't be mad if this book never connects directly with any other Ultimate book or story, better yet I wouldn't be mad if at some point the book is spun off from the Ultimate universe and is just Peach Momoko's X-Men. I really think that the absolute best time to bring in a new voice and reimagine a character or franchise is right when they're starting out in a new universe/continuity. So now is the perfect time to bring in someone with a freash perspective that is not as familiar with the characters. If you're doing a continuation you want someone who's very aware of the at least the most recent stories and characterizations, but a new world means a new idea, a new direction you can take them without changing the character dramatically. Character continuity, not setting continuity, is more important to me at least. They have to feel like the same person from the end of one arc to the start of another, you know?

I love this book, but I'll admit it's not what you'd expect from a book called "Ultimate X-Men"
I think the ideal amount of familiarity is someone who wasn't super familiar when asked to do the book, but goes through a sort of crash course and becomes a fan right before working on it. The example I'm thinking of is Robert Venditti's Hawkman run.

Comics were Horror, Cowboys, Army and (mystic or not) Vigilantly well before Superheroes came along. So it makes me glad that we can have elements like an update of those old or forgotten comic traits. That said I understand that this is titled X-Men. But generally patience is going to pay off 😁🤘

I'm sort of torn on this, but I do like that it sort of plays with the idea that Mutants aren't being recruited to Xavier's school (presumably the Maker killed Xavier?), so I like that it's a more solo affair in that regard. But yeah I'm one of those who was hoping for a more classical X-Men story.
Though hopefully some day Marvel will do an Ultimate X-Factor to give us Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Bobby and Warren! I'd like to see how their lives panned out without the school.

I absolutely love the series so far and issue two is amazing as well. Personally I think it fits in the X-Men mold as it’s literally about being an outcast and dealing with coming of age powers while facing internal struggles. As an avid Marvel reader (I spend about $55 a week 😭) this is by far the book I’m most excited for at the moment. I would also like to give a shout out to the current Captain Marvel run as I’m having a really fun time with it.

I was a huge 1610 fan back in the day. (Loeb kinda killed it for me with Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum --- honestly the creation of The Maker was one of the last things I read). However, your vids on this relaunch kinda makes me wanna get floppies again.

I think there's something to be said for UXM #1 being a very slow burn. It spends the entire issue focused on Armor, delving and developing her personal story. This deliberately more measured pacing reminds me of the manga I used to read, and tempered my expectations (of how fast the story should be developing)

I went into this cautious because it looked so different from the rest of the other Ultimate Universe art styles, and I remain cautious about how events transpiring here would impact the global machinations of Maker's Council. Howerver, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and like the fresh take on Armor's powers - seemingly being somewhat independent of her will - as well as the creepiness of the Shadow King (if that turns out to be him).
Given this interview, I'm hopeful for a few things. 1. Concerning Peach specifically: I hope this team discusses their long term plans with the Ultimate team and wherever they're going does align with the rest (even if in a way that makes them separated). 2. Now that we have this, I'm actually curious to see pockets of other nationalities' crop of mutants, rendered in their thematic artistry (even an experimental old-world Mayan or Ancient Egypt hieroglyphic style would be fun); even as rotating mini-series. 3. A separate book, after this has established itself more of course, that plants another batch of mutants to form a team of X-Men that does interact, and have a closer style, with the SM, BP and Ultimates books.
To resummarize, yeah, I want more of this, even more that is different, and also one title that is mainstream, and the X-Men title is actually the right thing to do that with.

I like the manga art style. I get them bringing more obscure Mutants to the forefront but I do hope to see some classics in at some point. Especially Wolverine since it's set in Japan and Wolverine has connections to that area.
And I hope to See Gambit at some point just because he's my favorite

The art is amazing. The story sounds interesting. The loose association with X-Men history might work in its favor, as everything else about it is so foreign to what I would usually expect in an X-man comic. I'd almost want to approach it as its own thing.

I kind of like the idea of following mutants or a mutant group from a different part of the world entirely, while I love Wolverine, Jean, Scott, we've heard their stories so many times, and mutants in general were supposed to be such a rich and far-reaching idea, the concept of people with special powers existing all over the world. Mostly, it feels like we got the X-Men in New York, and then a couple small enemies groups. Japan is an interesting place to center a new team.
Wouldn't be mad if they decided to bring in other Japanese mutants as well, like Jun Tenta aka Sumo.

I admit that while I enjoyed the issue, it doesn’t click with me for an “Ultimate X-Men” series. I would enjoy an “Armor” series continuing this way but, as you say, it’s a bit too removed from X-Men for me to quite feel comfortable yet with it. (I’m assuming more elements will come into play so I’m reserving a bit of judgement). I think the reason I feel this is because in the rest of the Ultimate “connecting” story, “Iron Lad” has been trying to bring back the heroes who had “their destiny stolen from them”. That’s absent from here and makes the title feel too separate from the relaunch.
Also: hang / hung - hill you’ll die on… you’re just trying to see whose dark sense of humour will break first and crack a comment. Dirty pool. :)
Oh, and least favourite mutant can vary but maybe Jean Grey or Chuck.

This is generally how I feel as well, doesn't feel like X-Men or part of the new Ultimate Universe either its a cute stand alone thing but I wouldn't call this comics X-Men at all (future issues may change my mind) so I still feel like I am missing my Ultimate X-Men, they finally relaunched the Ultimate Universe, which I loved (up until close to the end), and they're missing my favorite part. I'm really glad Marvel was willing to do something different though and hope all her fans enjoy.

The hung/hanged distinction is a hill of mine as well! The only time I'll really accept "hung" instead of hanged is in _My Fair Lady,_ when Henry Higgins says (since Rex Harrison doesn't really sing), "By right she should be taken out and hung / for the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue." But that's because of rhyming needs…Also because it's amusing to me to think that someone literally as hung-up on "proper English" as Henry Higgins would err in that way.

I would love to see something that takes on the global nature of the mutants. I always thought that was a strength of the Chris Claremont run. The outcast nature means a lot of them are disconnected to start with. But X-men has always been where outcasts have been brought together. Could we have both a team book about the classic x-men mission and an anthology series about the lives of mutants around the world? I guess in a world without Xavier to bring them together it makes sense but I want both
