The "What If Captain America Were Revived Today" story is pretty good on it's own, but Cap's "a flag is a piece of cloth" speech at the end is VERY powerful, and impacted a lot of young minds politically, self included, and still gets brought up in political blogging circles from time to time. The first issue I read, and still one of my faves is, "What if Wolverine was Lord of the Vampires?". Seeing pretty much everyone in the MU killed and/or turned into vamps and then dusted at the end was mind-blowing to my 12-year old self.

This was one of my faves as well, and one of the few that I owned (versus reading a friend’s copy). That and another from the same run - Google tells me it was two issues earlier - where Silver Surfer was never able to escape Earth. In a nutshell, he joins the Fantastic Four, obliterates all of their enemies, is forced to surrender his soul to Mephisto and temporarily causes peace on Earth. Good times.

First of all: let's all talk about how good that hair/lip combo is.
Secondly: Exiles was a fun series in the 2000s-ish times. It was a team of heroes (started out being mutant focused because of the "x" but then branched out) from alternate realities that to do missions in other alternate realities. They weren't shy about killing off team members either--and whenever that happened they'd recruit another alternate reality version. Essentially What If as a team book.
The premise was so fun and lots of the early stories were great. Though, there was a twist that was pretty divisive (I for one didn't like it) and it kinda lost a lot of its steam from then (if I remember).
Anyway, that's my cheat answer to my favorite What If

You know what's a great What If idea with a... Questionable execution, What If the Fantastic Four had different powers. On paper, well on the scripted page, the idea that their different powers came from a different aspect of their personalities is such a billion dollar idea, but it was kinda rough in the book.
Ben instead if being a rock monster because of tough guy traits gains dragon wings, because he's a pilot, and becomes "The Dragonfly" (but he doesn't have dragonfly wings though...). Johnny can't burst into flames because he's a hothead, but because he's a heartbeat too, becomes a... Robot (don't know how, just cosmic radiation). Sue isn't invisible or force fielding, she's just Ms. Fantastic with stretching powers (because she's always keeping things together) and Reed isn't stretchy, but a literal big brain, but it's fine, they fight Doctor Doom, and Reed takes over his mind and body forever, and becomes Doom, the Fantastic Four member... There's some things to iron out, but the bar has something there lol

I love the old-timey What ifs, at least as a concept. These days, the answer to the question "What if something happened differently?" is usually "everybody dies", but back then the writers really went deep into the implications and consequences. Like in the very first one, the Fantastic Five one, Sue chose Namor over Reed during a kidnapping that actually happened in issue 20-something of FF, but happened differently because of how the addition of Spider-Man to the team influenced their adventures, especially their first trip to the Moon and fight with the Red Ghost, again, from the original FF#13 - only this time Spidey took Sue's place while she was told to stay in the -kitchen- Baxter Building, raising her doubts about her place on the team.
Or the one where Spidey saved Gwen Stacy after her unfortunate trip to the Love interest Death Bridge, which was built around what those characters were. Or the one where Spidey's clone survived the original clone "saga", which ended with two Peters deciding to be roomies and carry the Spider-Man burden together. There was so much more thought put into the story back then. But then again, you can say that about the entirety of Big Two these days.

There are a few What Ifs did not mention that I adore from the ongoing:
#1 "What If Tony Stark-- SOLD OUT?!" - Basically Tony sells his Iron Man tech to the world so EVERYONE becomes an Iron Man. Super-powered heroes go out of business (Spider-Man being the one hero the story focuses on). From there we have freaking Magneto show and be all, "This tech has doomed mutantkind and now i'll doom all of humanity!" So yeah, this story ends up with Tony Stark vs. Magneto. I mean that along with the armor Tony uses in the final battle is just freaking nuts.
#2 What If Doctor Doom became Sorceror Supreme?! - I'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned. Perhaps given the Fantastic Four still show up in it, but it's a minor role. The real leads are Doom and Strange. With the most freaking twisted way of Doom "healing" Strange's hands. Not only that but the end twist is a chiller.
#3 What If Captain America Wakes up in the Modern Day? - This one I think was in the second volume and was a two-parter. Part 1 was Cap being woken up by Doctor Doom, who of course baits him into a fight with their mutual rival, the Red Skull. Without Cap, the two villains have conquered the world and are waring with one another. Part 2 sees Cap meet actual heroes who oppose both fiends. It's the whole unsettling fate we learn for the X-Men and Spider-Man characters that really makes the second one so gripping for me.

There's also weird What If?'s like Vol 1 Issue 4, which Marvel treats as canon. I think that issue offered up the explanation for how Captain America kept having comic adventures in late and post WWII after the retconed him into going into the ice before the war ended.

Blew my young mind because at that point in my comic collecting(I was buying in real time at that time) I had not realized that Dracula was in Marvel comics or that he fought the X-Men. Honestly one of the great things about What If? for collectors before the internet was it gave you a cool look into past comic stories that you may not have known about.

What If # 35: What If Elektra Lived. What makes this issue so special is it's the only one where Uatu the Watcher comes out of the shadows and makes his presence to the subject of the story known. This issue is vey reminiscing of the movie It's A Wonderful Life, where Clarence the Angel shows George Bailey how life would be if he wasn't born. Uatu who has the same emotional capacity as Mr. Spock, comes to a grieving Matt Murdock at Elektra's grave, and explains how things wouldn't automatically be better if she lived. It's basically Uatu coming to somebody's emotional rescue.

And Janet gives Nadia her surname, and adopts her. So she's Nadia's legal mother. You got me on the demeanor. Hope is all business and Nadia's a manic ball of sunshine. Doesn't change the fact that Hope Van Dyne and Nadia Van Dyne are two different variations of Hope Pym.

What If was one of my favourite series as a kid despite pretty much never having read the story they were playing with. You got a nice little synapsis of a story on the first page and then another full issue weirder story. Plus What If had the decency to be one issue stories which is a plus as a kid.
I'd recommend What If the Avengers Fought Galactus about a world where the Fantastic Four never gained powers. It's an interesting What If as you have The Watcher commenting on a story which he is part of and how this reality changed his own actions. Probably not a good first What If recommendation, just one I really liked.

My first and favorite What If is, "What if Captain America had Formed the Avengers?" It ends up with really great alternate versions of most of the Avengers in a crazy dystopian setting. How are "What If Spiderman Had Rescued Gwen Stacy?" and "What if Phoenix Had Not Died?" not even on the list? Those were amazing. They took two of the most iconic moments in all of Comics history and turned them on their head in impressively compelling and and well-written ways. They're also fantastic examples of "subverting expectations" in an actually intelligent manner, which is something a lot of modern writers could take note of.

What If's were always kind of a treat way back in the day. You could rarely find them on news stands (at least where I live) and they had a higher cover price than standard titles. I didn't get to read many of them until I was a little older, making my own money, and grabbed them in comic stores. Conan In The 20th Century was a major standout, and remains my fave to this day. A close runner up for me would be What If The World Knew Daredevil Was Blind? Sounds hokey, but it was better than you may think.

Oh, I'm a big fan of What If...? It's probably the series that actually got me most interested in Marvel in general. Each issue provided a recap of the divergence, so it helped catching up on what had happened in the universe to date. My overall favorite is probably the two-parter from What If Vol 2, #s 28 and 29, "What If Captain America Were Not the Only Super Soldier In World War II?" and "What If Captain America Formed the Avengers?" To really sum up what I like about it, it's (to me at least) the story that the more recent Secret Empire wanted to be.

I’m gonna have to dig through my box of comics from the 90s now, lol.. the one where kitty pride has to pull out Wolverines brain to kill him after he’s been teleported around to kill every one.. Wolverines healing factor is trying to work but his brain is outside his head. Epic panels... I can’t recall the name lol.. but I remember the maimed Captain American and the ending so vividly.. if you’re worried about getting into comics because you’re not excited about reading start with Marvel. Epic stories briskly told (which is why I prefer DC generally in the comics strictly speaking.. some how they’ve flipped abilities to tell stories as well in the movies).

Sometimes "What if..." went outside the box in terms of its story structure. I remember a 3-in-1 one story where it featured "What if Ghost Rider, Spider-Woman and Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell, not Carol Danvers) had remained villains?" In the Ghost Rider story, he encounters Daimon Hellstrom "The Son of Satan" and is defeated (possibly killed) by him. In the Spider-Woman story, she kills Nick Fury and becomes a fugitive from justice. In the Captain Mar-Vell story, his enemies are defeated and he's promoted to Colonel. The only other multiple "What if..." issue that I can remember was the Assistant Editor's Month edition which had a number of gag ideas like "What if Iron Man had an EATING disorder?" and "What if Daredevil were DEAF instead of BLIND?"
