- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ต.ค. 2024
- Reviewing my (Eric's) lightly modified 3rd Gen Tahoe... I even left in the car seats for this review! This 2010 Chevy Tahoe Z71 4x4 LTZ only represents the BEST and MOST RELIABLE generation of trucks GM ever made, including this generation of Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Avalanche, Silverado, Sierra, & Escalade! This was the last generation before failing transmissions and direct injection induced lifter tap became the norm.
They could even be equipped with heated reclining captain's chairs, rear entertainment, puddle lights, power lift gate, parking sensors, & more!
Classy 3-Row family hauler? YES!
Work Truck? YES!
Legit 4x4 Off-Roader? YES!

Who is interested in a followup video on Eric's 2010 Tahoe?
Since this video he has installed Eibach Pro-Truck Struts & Stop Tech Z36 Extreme Drilled & Slotted Rotors with matching Carbon Ceramic pads on all four corners as well as Eibach performance rear anti-sway bar!
Fantastic job on the video I’m planning on following his build on my next Tahoe
I’d definitely like a full review!
Yes please!
Yes please other video about this video. Would you recommend getting a 2006 Chevrolet? Tahoe, or would you consider getting what you have here? A 2010. I bought a 2008 Sierra 1500 With a 170000 miles. And I got Scamed on it. The previous owner knew the frame was very dangerous. But yet never told me and he fixed the frame up with FILL A FOAM They sell this stuff at like home depot walmart. It kind of looks like shaving cream But more of a yellowish color to it. And it's meant to fill in holes. He filled in all the holes in the frame doesn't take long to dry. Then painted the entire frame that brown rusty color so it would match. Plus the engine had lifter issues I had.
No choice to sell it To a place online that buys rusted frames on vehicles.I got barely anything for it.But at least got something that's why I am so hesitant on these in particular years. What is your opinion of the 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe?
finally someone is standing up for the GMT900 trucks and SUVs. They have been disregarded for years and years by other car youtubers, magazines, and editors. Yes we get it.. toyota is great blah blah. These trucks are AWESOME! built better then 90% of what come out today.
The interiors are honestly lacking in the build quality department, but when the rest of the platform can last 300k or more with proper maintenance in my area, then I'll let GM have a pass on the creeks & rattles lol
@@1offgarageagrees that’s the only thing that keeps me from buying newer chevys is there crappy interiors
@@1offgarage oh yes I agree, I have a base model 2013 Sierra 1500 SLE 4WD. Cloth, plastic everywhere but driven it 190k and still going strong, I am crazy about maintenance but its never needed anything out of the norm to run perfectly.
@@Rtn2-p3s Geez I'm sorry to hear. I do like Toyota too, particularly Lexus, so that is disturbing to hear. Hope all works out for you, but yea these trucks hit the sweet spot good for me. New enough and modern, reliable and pretty solid. Super awesome to hear about the Yukon tho, hell ya! Keep her running strong!
This production quality is unmatched, literally unmatched.
Thanks! I appreciate that
The Video or the truck 😆
I love my 2011 Tahoe LTZ. Over 250k and still running strong. This video hit the nail on the head.
Thanks! Glad you liked it & hope you enjoy your LTZ for another 100k at least!
360k in the suburban. 1 trans rebuild.
I’m at 309k completely factory stock drivetrain, and STILL runs like a new truck.
Im at 255,000 running better than my new raptor 🫣
im about to get suburban ltz, my parents had one and i just loved driving that thing
Just picked up a 2008 Tahoe with the same factory specs. I smile every time I turn that key.
What's the mileage?
My 2008 has 50k
Best video I've ever seen for a Tahoe content , especially since I own a 2008 Tahoe, I'm the original owner, I've put 301k miles on it with the original drivetrain, and in the last 5 years I've had a full bolt on and a custom dyno tuned, and it runs solid , sorry if I have any spelling mistakes, I'm a beginner in English and learning
Thanks for watching.
Just picked up a '12 Suburban LTZ, just passed 60K miles. She's a clean girl that packs a punch.
They're great truck, just make sure to disable the AFM to extend the life of the engine 👍
@@1offgarage mind me asking which diablew tune you chose or recommend ?
I got 360k. Change that oil and delete the dod system.
@@stefanb8526I got mine on amazon was around 110. I had a lifter collapse. Been running great and doesn’t change fuel mileage to much.
@@davidblevins9513 yes got the Range dongle. Was interested in the different options from Diablew. That's a beautiful mileage btw.
I just picked up a 2010 LTZ and I think it’s the best bang for your buck on the used market!
For my personal needs as a Family hauler & production truck that can also handle some off-roading & a trailer that is not a shop queen, there simply isn't a better deal IMO
Finally, someone talked about that. For me, it has been the best thing I could have bought for my family. I have had my 2007 Tahoe for 17 years and have crossed half the country with my family on vacation. I would say that in all aspects, it has crossed snow, mud, sand, off-road, and it still has everything from the dealership except all-terrain tires. I simply love the truck. Of course, the magic is when you give it the proper maintenance.
Unknown maintenance & living conditions of people's cars is the primary reason for most of people's issues with these SUVs... except the dash cracking, that's on GM 😂
@@1offgarage you freaking right 😆😆
I have this exact 2010 style vehicle and I love mine to the moon and back!! Dropped a transmission in it couple years back and only has 20k miles on it even if my odometer is reading 130k…it’s my 3rd Tahoe and I can’t imagine driving anything else and about to hook mine up..one more payment and this any is all mine!!!! 🔥😂
glad you mentioned DOD-delete which is a must, certain early models came without it, mainly 6.2 Denali/Escalades 07-09
Great point! Should we grab a 6.2L AWD escalade & build it to be a trackhawk killer? 🤔
💯. Theres a trick alot of ppl dont know. Shifting it to manual-5 and keeping it there keeps it in V8. its in the chevy manual/book
Love the GMT900
Tahoe. We have two. My wife has a 2011 Z71 and I have a 2013 PPV. Super easy to work on and mega comfortable to drive. They don’t look half bad either!
Great real world video. It is obvious you are a subject matter expert on these Tahoe’s.
Editing was top tier as well.
Awesome job!
I appreciate that! IDK if I'm quite an expert just yet, but I'm very familiar with the platform.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great lookin rig! Just traded my 04 3rd gen RAM for a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe. Probably the best decision I’ve made. Currently have the headliner out as I’m doing a black suede refinish and the interior trim as well.
Awesome! I'll be getting a suspension replacement/upgrade soon & an apple car play touchscreen infotainment soon!
This video sent me down a rabbit hole about direct injection and what that means, I had no idea about all that, thank you for the education, I learned a bunch in past few months and have been doing a lot of research on these Tahoes. This video is super helpful, especially the details about the key fob, those are things that I like to know about and I dont see anyone else talking about that type of "every day" use case.
Glad it helped!
Got two of the same tahoes brand new in 08 and 10, best SUVs they ever made 08 is at 310,000 original motor and trans and the 10 at 348,000 all original with maintenance kept up still running great.
Love to hear it!
I used to have an 07 Z71 but i currently have an 07 LT that i bought with 77k and now I’m sitting at 309k miles and the drivetrain is completely stock with exception of a tune. I love these trucks so much, i just wish they didn’t rust so badly.
It would also be nice if the plastics weren't so fragile too! But I still love these Trucks/SUVs
Just checking out some videos on this channel and you should have 10x more subscribers. Great content. Great footage, camera work, production, editing- all of it. But back to topic at hand, this Tahoe is absolutely BA. Such a crisp clean build on a great generation of truck.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. We think we should be there too… in time. 😉
@@1offgarage what brand cold air intake is that?
My 07 avalanche has 250k, original, and my 02 Z71 suburban has 312k and counting, original miles love them both
Love to hear it.
One of the best reviews I’ve seen for anything!
Thanks! More to come!
Great video! I found a “diamond” in the rough and just picked up a 2013 Chevy Avalanche LTZ Black Diamond that had on 26k miles on it. Clean title, history, and close to new condition. I had a 2019 Ram Laramie for a hot second (hated it) and the Avalanche is a significantly better truck to drive and ride in and more practical for weekend warriors like me.
Glad you're enjoying your crazy low mileage, 1 owner, clean Avalanche!
Noooice. Last year I found a 2013 GMC Sierra Denali with 23k. 6.2L with AWD, I'm whippling it this year!
Get a cam and new lifters. You’ll still have problems with the DOD.
Not with a DOD delete. 😃
@@hill_customs6807 yeah, to do the DOD delete you need a new cam and lifters.
I love these vehicles I’ve owned a 2013 Tahoe SSV in the past and I just cam swapped my daily 2012 Yukon Denali 2wd after lifter failure and I deleted the DOD/AFM,put a high pressure Melling pump and got it tuned. Should last me for another few years. 💯
Is the Yukon a 5.3L or 6.2L?
@@1offgarage It’s a 6.2….Thinking about a turbo but maybe down the road. 😅
I have a 2010 LT with a leveling kit and baja all terrain tires and I love it!
I've got an 07 LTZ with 455,555 Kms still running strong
WTF is a KM??? 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
I just bought one, you got me wanting to buy another!
Thanks. I've been in the market for a bit and have finally settled on this generation of the Tahoe/Yukon.
Right on! Have fun & disabling that AFM as soon as you can! 👍
Yea Im leaning towards one myself these days… I like the escalade to.
Do a cam package, headers, tune, maybe a lsa
I'm trying to decide if I'm going to cam this one or just buy a Yukon/Escalade with the 6.2L & build that one 🤔
Can't stop watching it!!
Thanks!
In my opinion, the 15’-20’ DPS Tahoes are the most beautiful and intimidating PPVs in the nation. Just a slimmed down version of the old reliable you’re covering in this video. In other states, I rarely stop for other state police when speeding, but when I’m in my home TX, that white hood makes you think twice before doing the dash.. I do it anyways, but I’ve had some troopers push their Tahoe to 140+ still on my tail before I lose them! Crazy MFers! 🤣 Thanks for your service. I’ll always have respect for our DPS and their efforts against violent crime, illegal immigration, and enforcing DOT regs on crappy truck drivers. God bless. Great review
I appreciate that sir! The fastest I got my 2013 in pursuit was just over 140 (speedo topped at 140, but it crept a little past the max readable)... but MAAAAN did it take a long time to get up to that speed LOL.
i had a 2003 chevy tahoe for 21 years as was a work horse. Finally broke down after 300,000 mile. Bought a 2007 suburban and problems all the time with 160,000 miles
I can definitely see having more problems than most considering it's the 1st year of that body style & not knowing the service history with the previous owners or how they treated it.
i got a 2012 suburban 3/4 ton, great camper/family hauler
Right on!
Absolutely amazing
Thanks!
Got a 08 burban with 230 000 miles and that thing is showing no signs of giving up
Have had a 2008 Silverado (sold at 180,000 miles) and currently a 2011 Silverado (124k miles) both with the 5.3, never had any issues with the AFM, did install the range afm disabler this time around.
Great trucks, but the dashes always crack… looking at getting a tahoe ltz or a yukon denali (6.2)
Very nice! And yes, the dash in this generation is a known issue unfortunately
I run a gm speciality auto repair shop and have repaired so many of these.. they have the issue with the AFM/DOD. But if you catch them before they go bad and tune it out of the ecm they will last along time. Or mechanically delete them when they do go bad these engines will last easy 300k. Big prob was LACK OF MAINTENANCE BY THE OWNERS!!!
change the oil every 4k miles and they are happy!!
I personal family driver i opted for a 2011 Yukon denali 6.2. AND a hard to find 2WD option.. 125k miles. And mint condition paid $7800 for it about 3 months ago.
And will run it well into 250k miles
Definatly one of the best platforms gm has produced.
Unknown maintenance is exactly why I don't usually respond to comments trashing a platform.
Maybe they got a lemon... or maybe they stretched their oil changes to 10k & don't wash their undercarriage after they drive on salted roads 😂
And maybe they park outside on the grass where animals & the elements have their way with the car lol.
Is there a reason why you prefer the 2wd option?
@@ltx383 yes. Less weight. Less problems. Easier to work on.. better mpg vs the AWD model etc.
@@ltx383 If you're taling about ultimate reliability, less moving parts is almost always better.
165k miles on my 2013. All original except for balljoints, tie rods, shocks. And at 150k I did a stage one BTR cam to delete the AFM.
I'm currently deciding on how how far I want to build out my daily, a cam sounds nice but will lead me down a ribbit hole haha
Wait till the first sign of lifter failure
My uncle has an ‘07 Tahoe and I like it 👍🏾
Awesome!
My neighbor has a LT Tahoe lifted on 35' tires... 383 tuned to 480hp. It's a great looking truck.
I may be adding power to my 5.3L as well. Love a chopping v8
I have the GMT 900 Yukon Denali I want to do some performance mods to it I always loved these generation GMTs ever since they came out back in 2007
If you have the 6.2L then yours most certainly has the much better flowing rectangular port heads, so making more power should be easy! Have fun!
I have 2011 tahoe enjoying watching this video
Glad to hear it!
that is literally the exact combo i am looking for. Even the interior. So hard to find...
Hope you find the exact truck you want!
I got a 14 ppv white. I’ll tell you you are absolutely correct 👍🏼
Nice! Probably the same Chevy Defender package I drove in my assigned 2013!
Years 10 thru 13 is the way to go
Agreed 👍
Tuning DOD off will definitely buy you some time, but the lifters will fail eventually... a DOD delete kit and tune is the way to go.
If I'm putting a dod delete cam in the. i may as well go Truck Norris 🤷🏼♂️
I’ve been thinking about getting into a Tahoe. We currently have a ford flex ecoboost but it’s a gas guzzler and not as roomy as a Tahoe could be for us.
Parts availability on an older vehicle is a big factor too & the parts on this body style GM Truck/SUV is incredible.
sorry, i disagree with you completely. i was a gm loyalist all my life following in my fathers footsteps. i had a 2010 suburban z71 and it was the biggest piece of junk i ever owned. i take care of my cars and did so with it too. it had serious rust issues in numerous locations, frame, rear ac lines, steering column, hood. not to mention the mechanical issues. lousy tow vehicle too. i bought it to travel with my 23' bay boat. 1000 mile trips and it was terrible. supposedly a 5500 lb tow capacity and had trouble towing my 4400 lb boat at highway speeds. i got rid of it in 2016 and replaced it with a 2017 ram 2500 mega cab with the cummins motor and it has been the best american car i ever owned. it's been 8 years and still love it.
Civil disagreements are always welcome. I'm hate that you had a bad experience with your GM, but when millions of these are produced a few bad apples are inevitable.
What motor did you have, how often was oil changed, what oil was used, where the vehicle was parked for most of its life, & the climate it was in all play factors too.
And yes a Cummins had better out tow a 5.3L lol glad you're enjoying the dodge!
Did this guy just sell me on a 3rd gen Tahoe? Why am I looking up used tahoes on google?!
Hey man, They're great price to performance & reliability propositions!
Also look out for the 6.2L Yukon of the same generation. For whatever reason those are way too cheap right now!
Pretty close, my 07 is at 254k going strong

I have the same truck and on TH-cam no one is talking about this Z71 package! What other modifications are you thinking of doing ?
So, since this video I have already installed Eibach struts on all 4 corners along with a stiffer rear sway bar from Eibach & the Power Stop Z36 Extreme drilled & slotted rotors with matching carbon ceramic pads.
Up next would be functional heat extractors (already ordered) & and even more free flowing exhaust in preparation for a cam, heads, intake, throttle body, & headers.
I'm wanting to build it to be a strong daily N/A truck that is also capable of taking boost if I decide to do that later on... although doing a boosted motor would also require a transmission upgrade rebuild as well.
@gtpremiumreviews More 3rd Gen Tahoe content please! I'm thinking really hard on snagging one.
More is coming on this Tahoe & it's mods!
Man I'd love for the transmission in these to last for 250k
Some can depending on if you actually maintenance them according to the service intervals or at least pay attention to your fluids & when they're burned up have the trans & transfer case fluids changed. Especially with a trans tune that shifts cleaner.
But there is always the torque converter lottery too lol
Awesome video man
Glad you liked it
Love my Tahoe Limited Edition!!! I love the 2010 as well. Just hate that nasty Beige interior, which seemed to be in damn near all of them regardless of exterior color !! Hard to keep clean…
You can find a certified Katzkins installer near you & have them fully custom re-upholster your seats & even add ventilation.
You can pick the materials, colors, stitching, embossing, etc.

4.8 better than the 5.3.... 5.3 started the AFM bs messing up lifters
"Better" is subjective. If you don't want to mess with AFM at all then the de-stroker 5.3L that is the 4.8L could be the answer for you.
Man rhis is such a great review. Thanks for doing this.
Im in the market for a LT z71. What's thr ltz add iber the Lt?
I'm not positive of what you're asking due to the spelling 😬.
But I believe the LTZ pack basically adds the luxury option & entertainment to the LT, & Captains seats into the build although they're listed separately, similarly to how an off-road package is listed on my window sticker when that's automatically part of the Z71.
The GM window stickers are notoriously difficult to match up to an actual order package, especially this far into the future.
Mine original sticker lists it equipped with the:
Sun, Entertainment, Destination package.
Luxury Package.
Off-Road Package.
HD Trailer Package.
And a handful of standalone options like the 2nd row captains seats.

What’s the mileage per gallon on these bad boys
The 4.8L & 5.3L 2-Wheel Drive "street trims" versions where EPA rated at 14mpg city/20mpg highway. My modified 5.3L Z71 4x4 will regularly see 20-22mpg averages while driving around 60mph, city mileage is still probably around 14mpg.

As stated, disabling AFM with significantly lengthen the life of your engine. To completely delete the system you can install a kit which is basically a cam & lifter swap.
Hello Guys 1 cuestion Pz help Me I need Choice Between Tahoe and first gen toyota sequoya I khnow Tahoe Engine 5,3 Vortec Prety Good With Timing Chain Vs timing Belt 2UZ In toyota But wich one is most relible? PLZ give me answeer guys
Maaaaan... honestly.
I timing chain is ALWAYS preferable over a belt, because a belt is a maintenance item. Not saying a chain can't get worn out or break but the need to maintain them or replace them is non existent, but the chain will last substantially longer.
That being said, even though I clearly love the this generation GM... Toyotas are absolute tanks.
Just bought a 2014 Z71 with 118k miles, after the AFM plugin, what should I do for mods?
Depends on what the vehicle needs to get replaced & what categories you want the vehicle to perform the best in.
Since this video I also upgraded all 4 struts, rear sway bar, rotors, pads, & added hood louvers. More to come as well
Don’t these have 6L80 transmission and it’s a bad transmission ?
There is nothing wrong with the 6L80. Everyone talks trash about what the other guy has. Just like how many say the 4L80E is made of glass when in fact there are still hundreds of thousands of those original transmissions still on the road today.
I believe the 6L80 & 6L90 trans has a bad reputation simply because the factory tune on the trucks leaves a lot to be desired & not that is mechanically unreliable.
Someone trading me with 2011 suburban z71 with 180k hwy miles i dont know if i should do it😊
Anyone know about the obd 2 afm shutoff he was talking about
There are several reputable options out on the market ranging from a simple plug & play AFM disabler to a full blow tune with AFM disable built in.
I don't intend on sounding rude when I say "google it", but there are so many options & I only have 1st habd experience with the custom DiabLew.
I few minutes of searches & you'll find a model that suits you best 👍
It’s got two too many doors though. The Tahoe died when they stopped the two door production.
I like them, but they have the most brittle dash plastics ever made.
Absolutely true. I think glass is stronger than the dash plastic 😂
what leveling kit is this?
I used the Maxracing 1.5" kit found on Amazon, but there are many identical kits from different brand son the market.
So does the flex fuel not utilize the 93 fuel correctly? I have a 2007 z71 do I need a tune to use it?
Mine is FlexFuel. I believe the flex fuel system uses an ethanol sensor to allow the engine to make adjustments to run properly on e85. The system wasn't designed to squeeze more power out at higher octane ratings, but rather to run well on both fuels.
@@1offgarage so a tune for 93 would be better instead
@@JayyMoney-vr7nv If you are comfortable with having your engine tuned, then yes.
I’ve got a 2011 Sierra 2wd with the 5.3. I love the truck but to say that the GMT900 trucks are some of if not the best Chevy trucks every made is bonkers IMO. The interior quality is absolute junk as well as most other plastic parts around the truck same goes for the Denali ones as well not great. I average about 15.5mpg combined not 20-24. As far as I know the 6L80 doesn’t have the best reputation either. Again, I like GM I just don’t think these were even close to the best trucks ever made by them.
Those 5.3s got some issues though
Like?
@GTPremiumReviews AFM lifters, oil pump/bypass valve issues rear main leaks, exhaust manifold bolts break. They are pretty good engines but they do have some issues that can set you back 1000s of bucks if your not careful.
gmt 400/800 were the best. afm killed gms 5.3
You sir are crazy you get lifter knock and failure on them years the best trucks and suvs are OBS you cant win this argument gmt900 are phasing out much faster way less quality in the interior and overall build quality, you might be able to speed to the gas pump but I bet the body and drivetrain in my 1998 suburban will be still going strong when that truck ends up in a crusher.
Thank GOD its not Carolina squatted!!!!!!!!
I would NEVER
Too bad it’s not a solid front axle.
Honestly, I'm totally fine with IFS. I'm happy to exchange some off-road capabilities for on road control & safety. Especially in a vehicle like this that isn't really intended to be a rock crawler or serious off-roader.
