Dope video!I blew up my outback xt trans and paid 3500 to have it rebuilt. Not even 10k miles later 4th gear synchro is gone, think I'll rebuild it myself this time after watching how simple it actually is. Thanks for the vid and info!
Well done young man. I just bought a used TY754 for AU$50 just to pull apart and learn these transmissions and I cant wait to pick it up now. Thanks for making this video, i learned a few good lessons already. Keep making vids mate. Good work.
u can also torq down the nuts once u assemble the trans u can lock the diff in place from the drain plug and u can select 2 gears at once to bind it to torq the other nut
3rd gear is always the weak link. Its the smallest of them all. I managed to strip 2nd in a 2.5RS box. Went PPG straight cuts and havent had problems. Im currently finishing up my Forester. I rebuilt it with RA's. Im down to setting backlash and sealing the case up. I replaced everything in mine! Center diff and all! My Forester had 276k on it 😅
@@SWSpeedCo Don't wait to long! The RA gears are finally EOL and I imagine there aren't to many people selling parts. I've had to do a lot of searching to find random washers and parts to complete mine. Even Subaru has some backordered with no ETA on when they would arrive. eBay, Amazon, and random part websites have helped me get all my parts
great stuff i was hoping some rally tough options may be around = ENGLAND - pro - drive - mine is automatic 4aet STI JDM 4.44 - good off the line 17 inch mags 50x225 tires
Looks to me like I wouldn't have to remove the "drive pinion shaft" from the "driven shaft" if all I need to do is replace "second driven gear." Does that sound correct to you? It's just the synchro teeth on the driven gear itself that are slightly mangled in my transmission. Could also be the teeth on the inside of the "reverse driven gear," if I'm not mistaken. I believe this gear is a single piece, whose inside splines are what make contact with the teeth which are part of each selected gear, after being dragged across the baulk assemblies.
No, wait. After a better look at the exploded diagram, it seems it's not part of "reverse driven gear", but the "1st-2nd synchronizer hub" which actually makes contact with the smaller `select` teeth on the driven gears, 1 and 2.
Do you know what the noise is when your in gear decelerating? Goes away as soon as you give it gas or go neutral. Great videos. I have a v7 motor swapped 02 wrx.
I'm pretty sure it is just the sound of the center diff gear noise. From what I understand it's normal, and if you mess around with tire pressure front and rear you can get it to be quieter
For the 2 gears and main shaft it was $270 I believe but the price varies depending on size and what part it is, you got to get a quote from them. If I were to do it again I would have gotten them cryo treated too which they also do
Hey question for ya. I just rebuilt and installed my transmission. Is it normal for there to be a wine at first. I’m reading online for most transmissions there’s a break down period but I can find anything specific for the Subaru 5speed. Did yours wine and if so how long?
Hey, my 09 outback transmission is starting to make a clicking sound under load only, (no it’s not the axles, I replaced them). It sounds kinda like putting a stick in a bicycle spoke sound. Any idea what that could be? I’m thinking a bearing internally,,,,, it only makes the sound while accelerating, and goes away if you push the clutch or let off the gas,,,,,
Same problem for me as Pandawatch below. I recently replaced the input shaft on my 08 wrx with another complete shaft from a 2014. My first gear stripped. Looks like your third gear. I kept my output shaft as is. It had no damage and I wanted to keep the same shims so it fit the pinion gear. Day one everything was fine. Next day I have a deceleration whine coasting in first gear. The slightest touch of the pedal and it goes away. Tire pressure didn't fix it. Any idea what other gremlins snuck in overnight to cause the whine? has about 200 miles on it now. I used 80w-90 but should be fine for now in the 90 weather we've been having. Also, around 26:15 I didn't see you put sealer around the two bolt holes that go through the center of the case. It cuts to you putting the case back together so maybe just got edited out.
Not sure of what else would cause that unless some other parts have play in the transmission. The two bolts that go through the center I put sealant on I just got edited out.
Where abouts did you source your parts from? Thinking of rebuilding mine as the synchronizers are toast. For the cost of a rebuild at a shop I can buy 4-5 used transmissions, would rather attempt a rebuild on my own. Only difference is I have the dual range version.
5th gear has a woodruff key and some amount of friction fit so you need to find a way to clamp onto it and press it off, I would probably use a bearing separator which might be able to take it off on its own but if not you can just get it tight and then press it off
Hey im havingbtrouble finding parts ( gears and bearings ) is my only option a dealer ? And what is most likely to cause a wining noise on accel and decel, all gears , loudest in 1st and 5th and quietest in 3rd Any help would be much appreciated, thank you
The dealer is your only bet for sourcing the parts. Whining on decel is normal but not on acceleration. If I had to guess I would say one ir multiple bearings are probably in need of replacement. Not 100% sure on that but it's the only thing I can think of that would cause 5th gear to wine loud.
Awesome video bro. How much did it cost to get the gears heat treated and what company did it? I want to do that to my Hawkeye 5 speed. I sheared off 3rd gear. Also you should sell those PVC pipes as a kit and sell them online. I would love to buy that pre made PVC pipe kit you made.
The treatment cost was $280 if I remember correctly if I was going to do it again I would get them cryotreated as well which would be extra. Their is only one company that does it and I'm pretty sure its just called WPC treatment.
I did the same thing to the stock 5sp in my GC8, 3rd gear at full throttle, the wastegate opened and the teeth fell off 🤣 I went for another 5sp with PPG gears instead of doing the 6sp swap.
There is a special tool that Subaru recommends for measuring backlash. I didn't want to buy one or make one so I just used gear alignment paint to make sure that the front differential gears were meshing properly based on the pattern.
I got them from my local subaru dealer but some websites I like are subarupartsdeals and subaruparts warehouse. They usually have better prices than if you just go in to the dealer
Yup.. this is one of those jobs that’s better to leave for the pros, not saying it’s not doable, but definitely not like putting together an engine. The amount of little parts, gears, bearings, pressure seals, one must have and the proper orientation and the specialty tools needed to place the parts correctly so the transmission works properly again is enough to leave this job for the pros. Great work on you at least opening it and trying it, have a better understanding of how things go/work. Thanks for the video. Edit: this was a cool video I found. Thought I’d share it for info.. 👍🏻 th-cam.com/video/erYNx-jODzI/w-d-xo.html

I do love how people criticize the stock motors and transmissions in WRX/STi. I've tripled the power output, and something failed. What a piece of junk!! Maybe you need to learn some more stuff before applying criticism to mechanical components! Mind you, I'm not saying this to you, specifically. You were just referencing the term others use. It just always makes me when I hear it.
I 100% agree with you. I think alot of the criticism now a days is because alot of German cars are overbuilt and can make lots more power with a tune and minor bolt ons, where as subarus you have to replace everything to make more power. That being said I have a friend with an audi s4 making the same power as me and he probably has 70k into the car and I only have like 30k into mine even though the only thing left original is the body lol.

Yeah so the first and second gears have a closer gear angle to straight cut gears than helical gears. They are still helical but since the angle of the teeth is less steep they are noisier. But yes that's normal.
That was so sweet of your transmission to put all those pieces in a little baggie for you 🥹
