This video is useful. I have a Spec.B and was looking at getting hubs and brakes for an STI to have 5x114.3 wheels and stuff but this is a little bit too involved with the wallet than I am prepared for at the moment.
Hello there I respect the build your doing. I have a 2010 Legacy GT it has a 6 speed but its a bit clunky compared to its more sporty cousin the STI. I’m thinking of just doing a few mods to make the transmission shift smoother. Good luck with the build.
From my understanding the 2007 is the cheapest 6 speed to buy new and it has the helical front LSD as well as the 1:1 torsen center diff which is the best combo for going fast.
The newer transmissions don't run a VSS in the box but instead through the abs I am currently putting an 09 trans into a 99 legacy and it has some hurdles
Hey man, this is an awesome video. Do you have the part numbers for the rear drive shafts please? I have a 5 speed jdm legacy and wanting to do this swap. Thanks for the awesome video.
Do you recall what the part numbers are for those spec.B-specific shifter linkages? Thanks for the video! Considering finally doing this to my '08 Outback XT OH BOY.
The part numbers for the spec b shift linkages are 35041AG020 and 35031AG020. All the part numbers are in the forum post I linked to in the description. Glad you enjoyed the viseo. Thanks for watching!!
@@SWSpeedCo It looks like 35041AG020 is indeed only for the spec.B, but 35031AG020 is also on a bunch of 2008+ STIs (maybe only omitting 2011 for some reason?) and 2015-2021 WRXs. Both parts appear to be in stock again!
Right now I’m just trying to get my A/c to stop venting hot air on me and get my radio and a/c controls back and to power on. Oh yea 2005 Outback XT manual limited raised 1”
Six speed swap I'd done, haven't had time to edit and upload, been very busy recently. I had to put the car back to stock to get it inspected because I got a state ref ticket. But i will be back😎 Thanks for watching!
Very cool, I would not be able to tell you a parts list for that car as I don't know myself. I would try looking on the legacygt forums to see if there is any information out there.
I think they are as strong as the 5 speed transmission. They have the same split case design as the 5 speed so they flex a little bit. Probably around 350 whp. The sti 6 speed has thicker gears and a one piece case which makes it much stronger
Hello trhere i have been following this build recently as I have a 2007 3.0r limited and planning to swap a 6spd in. You mentioned the spec b pallets being cheaper but no center diff. Would I be able to purchase the center diff separately (dccd pro/ iwire) if I wanted control over where that power goes? like in winter time for a little fun for e.g.
I'm not sure if that would work. It may be possible but what I do know is that a dccd is about 3500 to buy on its own so at that point you may as well buy the sti transmission.
It seems like the swap has been done before so it's possible. The process is more than likely very similar, but as far as what peripheral components are needed to make it work together I am not sure. I would recommend looking at some forum post to see what others have done. Hope that helps!
I don't know if you would know the answer to this, but should a base model (2005) Legacy take pretty much all the same parts you used and have listed in this video?
Yes, the legacy and outback are basically the same chassis just that the outback has a body lift. Other than that they are the same and this combination of parts would work on a legacy as well
@@SWSpeedCo That's what i guessed, but i wanted to make sure. This is a list of all the parts you mentioned in the video and if you can can let me know what i've missed that would be helpful. - 2007 STI transmission - 2007 STI rear LSD - spec.B rear axles - LGT front axles - rear STI differential mount - clutch setup - reverse lockout - shifter for a spec.B - transmission crossmember for LGT (or is that only needed for the outback?) - STI 6-speed transmission mount - spec.B shift linkages (or add .38 inches to STI ones) - driveshaft from 4-speed auto legacy with r180 flanges instead of the r160 flanges it comes with - spec.B clutch hose
So it can be any year sti rear diff from 2007 to 2019 I think. As long as it has the correct final drive. The lgt transmission cross member was just for the outback application. For the rear diff you are actually removing the r180 flange and putting an r160 flange on the r180 diff so that you can use that driveshaft. Or you can buy a spec b driveshaft and it will bolt up to the r180. Other than that looks good, hope that makes sense.
I'm not 100% sure on this but I think the issue with that is the sti hub swap doesn't work on the legacy platform like it does with the wrx because different chassis. Another factor is also axle length. I believe the legacy uses longer axles than the sti. The spec b axles from subaru aren't cheap but It may be cheaper than buying everything for a hub swap if that would even work but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
So you can just order a brand new 07+ STI transmission from a dealer?! 7K thö. Where'd you find the rear diff? I got this swap, 08, done on my 06 OBXT couple of months ago and the person that did it "overlooked" the tiny detail that the axles aren't locked into the rear diff. The circlips in the diff aren't there at all or are just can't lock into the groove in the axles. You can slide them in and out, by hand, of the diff by almost an inch AND I'm losing gear oil from the left axle port of the diff. I'm gonna get this issue resolved very soon but less than $10 in parts is gonna cost someone ELSE some $. I'm pretty pretty 😤.....
I dont think the rear has circlips on the axles. The one I pulled out of the r160 didn't have it, and the new spec b axles didn't come with circlips and the still locked in. I think you might just have to seat them In better. And I got the rear diff used from a guy who parts out stis. It came from a 2015 sti. All sti different from 2006 to 2021 use a 3.54 rear diff so you can get them from any new sti
When I install axles I put them in the diff or trans side first and kind of use a slide hammer like action with the axle and a couple of pushes and you can feel it click in
@@SWSpeedCo when I give you $1500 AND 7 days (when you said you can do it in 2) to do a swap you've done before and the axels aren't locked in, and, AND you admit you fucked up, it's gonna cost you to either take the diff apart and put the circlips in the diff or buy and install another/new diff. Oh, and did I mention I discovered his "oversight" 2 days AFTER I drove 330+ highway miles back home? Consequently, I've not driven it for real cuz there's no diff dip stick so idk how much oil is left in it or the rate of oil loss and I refuse to get my hands dirty to find out cuz I spent clean $ AND rented a car (2020 OBXT; turbo that takes regular and the hands free "eyesight" feature is DOPE!) for a week for $304 to have the swap done minimally correctly. In fairness, the kid KNOWS what he's doing which further compounds my pissedoffedness. Yes, I'm a professional wordsmith, don't try this at home without proper safety precautions in place.

He had $ tied up in the parts so he was "motivated" to get his $ back so he made $100+/hr and had 7 days to do so he procrastinated. It's gonna get straight but it's gonna be a PITA and that's gonna be factored in to his cost.
Hey man did you have To Do anything with the computer? My tuner said that the automatic computer has a lot of blocked systems and that the ECU from a manual car would give a lot more options for tuning. And what do you know anything about this?
I haven't tried it yet, currently acquiring funding. But i believe if I get a set of coilovers meant for a STI, they should from all I've read work, and allow me to do a 114 swap easier and allow me to possibly use sti axels depending on length. If that wont work i understand, there is very little information on doing a hub swap on a Legacy. If all goes well I might start posting my progress on my 2nd gen.
Yes, the swap is done! I've been very busy with school as I'm trying to graduate this semester, so I haven't had time to edit the videos yet. I will be done with school in a couple weeks so you can expect the video around that time hopefully!
Wonder if I would be able to run those spec B axels in my 04 WRX if I did a 6 speed swap but tried to keep the WRX5 hubs? I've read some where a WHILE ago that its been done just cant find it.
If it says they only fit spec b and no other cars they may be the right part. From my experience though aftermarket or remanufactered axles from parts stores don't hold up very well

this is awesome!.....now can you show us how to do this swap with a 7th gen legacy XT?
Good thing to know is, if your car is a 5 speed auto and you're swapping. You will need to extend your transmission mounts.
2009-2013 forester hubs will work and use oem axel
Good to know. What if I wanted to use Spec B. axles?

Doing a swap myself ,why people do 2007 vs others is the vast sensor and how it communicates to the ecu plus everything said below

Hahaha, yeah its definitely a lengthy and expensive swap to do. If I wasn't making over 350 whp I wouldn't do it either
Thats a big untertaking! Must be nice to have the best brand new transmission parts.
