Here's an idea to help make your press a bit more user friendly when stamping plates like that. Print your plates with a small lip, say 1/8" wide all the way around. Then on your upper wood piece put a couple of thin clips on each corner to hold the plate in place. That will hold it in place so you aren't trying to get it aligned all the time. You can put a guide mark on the edge of the wood to help you center things in the press as well.

Nice touch with including both manual *and* specialized tool methods for so many steps. I always try to explain to friends about how the specific tools are nice, but not always "essential" to the process.

You might want to look into how things like perler bead boards connect. Adding those style tabs to your patterns would allow you to cover large areas in one go but still be modular for storage. Maybe heat the surface, put the big pattern on, and then roll it with a weighted roller?

@punishedpropsacademy - Leather worker here, if you properly "case" the leather you will end up with a cleaner and crisper image. Casing is soaking the leather, then allowing it to dry back to an almost dry state (only the top side is allowed to dry, by leaving the bottom in contact with a marble). This allows the corium and flesh side of the leather to remain damp, meaning the grain (outer surface) is drier, and able to take a much crispper impression.

Printmakers have a rolling press which would make it easier to do larger pieces. Using that combined with something like the heater element from a vacuum press might be very efficient. Another option would be to use what Frame shops use. Frame shops often have large machines used for dry mounting which will use a vacuum and heat to dry mount artwork. If you happen to find one for sale in your area I'd check to see if it can reach the required temperatures.

With all the foam you use I am surprised you don't own a cheap Chinese CO2 laser, it can cut the foam and engrave it with pretty much anything and various depths and textures.

We have a laser cutter! We just wanted to experiment with other ways to add texture that don't involve cutting the foam

It'd definitely be possible to make a cool roller, I've used something similar to impress a cobblestone pattern into some Milliput for use as a miniature base. I think rolling it over a larger expanse of foam would be pretty difficult, though, maintaining the same pressure all the way through would take some practice - and of course heating a big area at once would be tricky

I’m 5 months late but if you cast the stamps out of metal and add a Handel you could heat up the stamp instead of the foam

  • @Waciglass

Not sure if it has been suggested but a T-shirt Heat Press might be a way to heat a larger foam areas, then if you had metal stamps they could heated bit like a hot foil printing plate instead.

Great video through and through, also love your use of spaz airbrush paint.
I have about four bottles of the stuff and use it a ton, but never thought it could be used like that.
I swear I'm always learning new things from you!

  • @MrMartinSchou

Would it work if you heated the stamp instead of the foam? I don't know what temperature the foam needs to be to take an impression, so if it needs to be close to the stamp's melting point this obviously won't work, but if we're talking 50 to 60 °C maybe it'll be fine? It also depends on the stamp's ability to give off heat to the foam.
I suspect it'd be more efficient in terms of time to only heat the stamp, and if that works you're also not going to experience the heat bleed you were worried about.

If you haven't tried it, you can do 1/8 & 1/4 inch foam on your vacuformer. Just clamp it up & heat it like plastic... It'll hold it's shape when cooled, & works great for flexible face shells and formed areas like armor joints...

I would love to see Echo or Tech's helmets from the bad batch- they're literally so cool-
Like how would one do that-
And how Tech's goggles go under his view finder-
I understand if you don't like disney starwars/haven't watched it im just simping for the designs of Jango's children-
And yes i have seen the clone wars.
But i literally would be too happy with any of their helmets/armor especially rex.
But I gotta give it to Tech and Echo for the most unique and cool armor design 🥰🥰 they're so cool-

This is mainly me nerding out for both you and the Clone's designs 😄✨

    • @punishedprops

All you need to work with foam is a good sharp knife, contact cement, and paint. A basic Dremel or Rotary tool can really help do! Most things we make on this channel you can do with those 4 things :)

You should make the edges of your stamps keyed like the edges of some matting, or those square kids mats. Working with two stamps you could key to the new stamp to the previous stamp for an aliened pattern. Working with the previous stamp in place might work with the heating process as well? Just food for thought, it's not my wheel house. Cool stuff!

  • @myunrealenginebuilds

once you've printed the pattern on a cylinder, how about a clothes mangle to squeeze them, maybe mount the heat gun Infront so it heats the foam as it feeds in.
