Usually, the main purpose of learning the Russian language is the ability to communicate with native speakers. But for some reason, it's extremely difficult to become fluent. Even if you know Russian grammar and vocabulary, even if you've been learning this language for years, you still might be struggling with awkward pauses when it comes to a real conversation.
Maybe you start a phrase, but you hesitate every time because you're not sure how to express your thought in Russian. You know perfectly well how to say it in your language, but you're just not 100% sure how to translate it. As a result, you are slow and shy - far from feeling fluent.
Enough! Today I'm going to give you the first tip on learning the Russian language: how to learn thinking directly in Russian and how to eliminate hesitation when you speak.
Most students believe that thinking in any foreign language is difficult, or that it's a special gift. And in reality thinking in Russian is a skill that even beginners can learn and practice! Long story short, here are the step by step instructions on how to think in Russian.

Awesome advice! Thank you. When I was most successful in studying Russian, I would conjure the thought behind the English word and replace it with the Russian word. When I began thinking in Russian, the Russian thoughts I had would just flow out as words, but it never occurred to me to do what you advise. It makes perfect sense. It seems crazy I never realized what you're saying.

I've been using Duolingo for almost 100 days now. This channel has been _heaps_ helpful in parts that I wish Duolingo explained. Keep it up :)
Okay, here's something you may already know about. If you don't that's cool, but if you do just kindly disregard. Okay? "Здравствуйте," or, Zdravstvuytye," is hello for greeting someone you're not familiar with or someone you've just been introduced to. You can also say just, "zdravstvuy," for, "Hi."
"Привет," or, "Preevyet," is hello, hi, howdy, etc., to known others
And пока "pucka" is an informal bye, while до скорого "doh skorovo" is more like "see you later", and до свидания "do svedanya" is a slightly more formal goodbye. I've heard, but not sure if true, that дания "danya" is another informal goodbye but can't be sure of that one.

I just did a similar thing. The app i'm using focused on fruits and veg first but I know my colors so I'm just naming what color all the random stuff around me is. Practice what you know and keep adding vocab everyday :)

I used these strategies (without knowing what to call them) years ago when I was studying Russian in the military. I used to walk to work, about 45 minutes each way and as I walked I would describe my surroundings in my head, or make a list of things to do, or simply re-hash over the previous day's vocabulary. I ended up graduating at the top of my class and giving a valedictory speech in Russian. :)

If you forgot, read about those nazi Ukrainians who burned alive Polish, Jewish people and those who didn’t support them. My grandma told me what they were doing in her village during the WW2.
This is awesome to know. Ive been doing this with French lately, just describing things out loud or saying what i plan to do that day in French. And now i'm starting to learn Russian, so stoked. Also the fact you were doing it doing it everyday probably helped a lot

Just started learning Russian this week and am very excited. I was adopted from a city south of Moscow as a young boy and never learned the language. Although I’m only a few days in, I don’t find learning it to be as overwhelming as learning other languages including Spanish. This might be due to my inclination to learn but I find it kind of easy to catch on reading and writing- speaking not so much

I am a Norwegian, and I speak Russian. I have been teaching Norwegian to Russians for 10 years, and one huge difference between Russians and Norwegians when it comes to learning a foreign language, is a thing the lady in the vid is mentioning, although more as a universal fact considering everyone, namely: in an educational setting, Russians are nervous of saying something wrong, making mistakes in front of the class and to make a fool of themselves. In a math class you can just sit still and stfu, nobody notice your lack of knowledge. In a language class however, in order to improve, one HAS TO actively use the language AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE in order to improve in practical use of the language. When I was studying Russian with my fellow Norwegian friends at university, we had great fun! We made loads of mistakes all the time, but noone were afraid of failing, we all knew the purpose of the class; to learn and improve everyday, learning by doing, basically. And boy, did we improve! Our relaxed attitude helped us a long way in acquiring knowledge and skills, much more so than what I see in most Russian stone faces in the classes. Therefore, it is one of the first things I mention to a new class of Russians starting to learn Norwegian: leave your stiffness and solemnity at home (or back in the USSR, where this way of thinking has its origins), lower your shoulders and have fun! You will learn Norwegian much faster, and you will enjoy it too! My impression is that most Westerners think the same way as Norwegians when it comes to learning languages, so the advice in the vid is somewhat more relevant to Russians learning a foreign language, than to Westerners. The advice might be good though, for the Chinese and the North Koreans.

at the beginning I used to put some post-it on the objects around me, every noun written in cyrillic and below how to pronounce them: malakò, gazèta, tilifòn, kampiùter, haladìlnik…I think it was very useful, i felt myself surrounded by the russian language! Thank you for your videos, a wonderful way to learn English and Russian at the same time

When I go to the shops for groceries, more and more of my shopping list is in Russian. But smetimes I am in the shop and I forget what a word means. I am in love with this beautiful language and I am only at the begining of my journey to learning it. A couple of months ago I said in an email (when I requested if I could join her real russian club) to Daria that I promised that I would learn russian. And I don't break my promises.

i was born in russia and was adopted at an early age from america this is something i’ve always been interested in and i want to learn as much as i can
I speak 6 languages and have just started learning Russian and the advice you give in this video is the best I have heard so far as it is what I have done with all other languages.
Not to promote alcoholism, but talking after a few beers is MUCH easier. Words seem to flow, I think because we are more relaxed. I lived in Latin America for four years and taught myself Spanish to near fluency.

I realized at one point, when I reached a conversational level, that I started thinking in Spanish. It came naturally, but I will try your method by forcing myself to think in Russian even at this beginner level.

We are at the mercy of native teachers. One day I wanted to write down all the things I did at home and learn to say them in Russian. "Im going to make up my bed"...."I wonder whats in the fridge" etc. Problem is, where can we find these phrases? We can't trust a translator. Even some of the most simple phrases I make notes of, a Russian friend looked at them, and corrected about 30% of them saying "no, no one would say it that way in Russian"

When I started thinking in Spanish, I freaked out....I felt like I was losing my American English identity and stopped!! Sad, I know! I want to think in Russian so badly and will NOT freak out if that ever happens. My blood is Russian, not Spanish!

A woman told me once in the best way I've heard why it's easier to understand other languages but we struggle to speak it.... She said, When you are hearing it, it is already constructed for you. When you try to speak it, you have to not only understand it, but understand how to construct it too. It made sense to me. There is music in the Russian language, much like Italian... Both beautiful languages

I so happy i found this!! My parents are Polish so i can understand a bit when i hear them speaking or when i hear people in the streets, but as you said when it comes to talking, i find that my grandmother gets bored with the conversation very easily!! Thank you for the tips, they were very helpful and i will definitely use them. I also appreciate that Russian and Polish are quite similar with the words that we use, so this will be the next language i move onto! :)

Makes sense, a child learns words then small phrases
"Speaking" is really two components: Listening comprehension, and also outgoing expression of ideas. The former is more difficult. (I'm really addressing communication, not speaking. But, I believe that is what you are really addressing here.)

This helps me a lot! I am a beginner. This fastens my learning. Every time I learn a new phrase I immediately apply the thinking in russian method, and I could not only remember it the next day I am actually believing it. This definitely improves my confidence when trying to speak Russian with Russians. Bolshoy spasibo! :)

After five years of Russian in school, I still couldn't speak or understand very well. I had to live there for a couple years AS I was studying the language before I could be fluent.

я бы хотел добавить несколько приемов из своего личнего опыта, так как я жил в России почти 7 лет.
1) забудь тот язык которого ты до этого знал и начни учить все слова заново как ребенок и пойми что дом это место где живут люди а никак не House!!!
2) старайся выучить слова не по отдельности, так как слово теряет свое значение, а выучить новые слова вместе с каким-нибудь выражением.
3) каждый день перед сном повторяй от 20 до 50 слов, а днем освой от 20 новых слов.
4) чтобы ты говорил без акцента по-русски то тебе нужно делать след.:
а) Изменить тембр голоса в соответствии с частотами звуков русского алфавита.
b) наблюдать за то как двигаются губы, руки и тело у носителей языка, и стараться копировать их.

I need to learn proper Russian. I can speak Russian to people but I learned in the US when I was a teenager from other teenagers and i'm too slang. Plus English my 2nd language because I spoke French first with my family. I tell people all the time to try to think in that language. The problem is over time you mix everything at least for me. I mix all 3 languages mentally and if I'm not careful I sound like a mess lol
in that case you should read more classics :D

На счёт перевода мыслей, если ты очень долго учишь язык ты уже перестаёшь переводить язык, ты просто привыкаешь к нему. Я учу язык семь лет с первого класса и сейчас учусь в Австралии. И я перестала переводить английский, я просто знаю, что нужно сказать потому что
мое подсознание привыкло к этому языку.
да, у меня так же с английским, уже давно не перевожу. Но это скорее не от того, сколько учишь по времени, а насколько часто говоришь и вообще насколько погружен
