For me, I'm interested in learning Russian to converse with a friend who's currently staying in St Petersburg for fun; I'm not sure if I'll write much. Is it still important to learn written Russian, to better understand the speech? I ask this because I know that learning how to read and write in French helped me to learn to speak in French, for example.

По поводу фраз приветствия: Церковные люди (православного вероисповедания) при встрече также произносят "Спаси Господи", некоторые - "Спаси Христос", но вряд ли иностранцам это пригодится). Есть еще фирменное приветствие от Дмитрия Пучкова (Гоблина) "Я вас категорически приветствую!".

I'm a filipino trying to learn Russian, and boy, wow. My American friends say that speaking in Tagalog is hard, they should try speaking in Russian, it's a literal tongue twister. I still love it tho.

The first time you call her, would you say privet?

If you are talking to someone you should address as "вы"(older person which is not your grandparent, your boss, complete stranger / people you don't have some friendship with) then you can say theyr name afterwards. For example you can say hello to your boss like this "Здравствуйте, Александр Петрович" But it is not necessary. In a usual conversation, when you say the name of the person after "здравствуйте" it is could be considered by someone as a sign that you have something to say something besides just saying hello, like restrained anger(But it's mostly about intonation, not the words) But if you clearly sound like a Russian learner you don't really have to worry about this, you can just don't say the name after "hello" 2. It's all about social positioning and friendship. In schools, for example, every student will adress to other students with "привет" even if you don't know them, and the teachers with "здравствуйте". If you work in the office you can adress to your сolleagues you know with "привет" and some of them you don't or your boss with "здравствуйте". Answering your question, if you meeting a girl in a bar/club, for example, you can even start with "привет". The general principle is simple: If you can have/planning to have a friendship or relationships with that person you say "привет" as soon as you met them. But if you are meeting for work, in the most of the situations you keep the "здравствуйте", especially if they are older than you/ have a higher job rank than you. In Russian, there is a phrase that often featured in movies about relationships between people who were just working together(like the relationships between professor and a student): "Может, перейдем на "Ты"?" which translates like "Can we switch to "you"(instead of official "you")" good luck learning russian)

I want to learn Russian eventually in my life and the grammar seems to be similar to Spanish and other languages I've started learning but I think the main problem is that they have different characters and a very different alphabet and I'm not very good at adapting to something that doesn't have that sort of groundwork. but I think I'll try to start learning by ear for the moment because I still really want to learn it
