One of the best UK punk singles. Such a shame they didn't do 3 or 4 albums with Malcolm Owen. They would have been massive.

'The Ruts' are definitely Punk from '79, they were formed earlier, some of their songs have a Reggae influence, this was their biggest hit. Other tracks to check out by them are:
    "Staring At The Rude Boys",
    "In A Rut",
    "Something That I Said",
    "Give Youth a Chance",
    "Jah War",
    "West One (Shine On Me)",
    "Dope For Guns",
    "Savage Circle",
    "H Eyes",
    "S.U.S."
    "Society".
There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.

Oh it’s Punk ok Chris - main difference with The Ruts is they were fantastic songwriters and musicians. So they had all the sneer and swagger of any punk band but they had the talent to back that up in terms of playing their instruments. This track is mega fantastic and it’s from the equally mega fantastic Album The Crack !!!
I asked for their reggae classic Jah War from the same album but I couldve asked for ANY track cis it’s flawless . They never achieved their quite obvious destiny due to the scourge of Heroin addiction which claimed their oh so talented lead singer Malcolm Owen just a short time later , he discusses this on another fav track called H Eyes .. such a waste of a young life … anyhoo …..
Thanks for playing , thanks to the folk who asked for it .. made my day 😅

Both England & The United States are having very divisive elections this year & people aren't really voting for someone , they are voting against someone else & thats an unfortunate way to vote. Its nice to support a candidate & or party that gives you hope & optimism over fear & despair. Not this year.

We have a Prime Minister who backstabbed his way to the top. We have a leader of the opposition who makes up any policy the people might vote for. Both vile individuals.
America has a president who seems to be heading towards senility and hates the English, and Trump who is pro Putin. I have no idea what is happening to the world. We are already in another cold war, and armed conflict is only a stone's throw away.

Surely the Democrats' record over the last 4 years should give people hope and optimism but no, it's more complex. People follow party lines, they're told socialism is communism (and now fascism, as it is in Russia) and are given bogeymen in the form of immigrant 'invasions' (Hitler's playbook) or vote for me (a wannabe dictator) who'll fix it for you. In England we have the dying embers of a failed regime of similarly right-wing politics that has failed us miserably over 14 years and from which the hard liners have jumped ship to the Reform party. The only viable alternative is Labour - who at least have some empathy with some of the issues like transport, education, health, climate, infrastructure and power - sound familiar USA?

Great track by a great band. As mentioned by others Malcolm Owen the lead singer died from overdosing on heroin.

I find heart wrenching to listen to.

I very much doubt that you have heard of them before, they used to play regularly at my local nightclub. Your opinion is totally valid kev that they’re still going today , I differ though . The Ruts name is still going but without Owens and especially Paul Fox the blisteringly talented guitarist who died in 2007 this , in my opinion , can only really be a tribute band at best . Good luck to them but I wouldn’t pay to see them and would prefer they changed the name instead of trading in it . Not being difficult with YOU btw , I feel the same about all those 60’s groups who are still going 🤷‍♂️.. like The Drifters etc , who now have NO original members left 🤯.. anyway , that’s my tuppence worth ✊

Im a punk, since about 1983 and i'd have to say The Ruts are probably my favourite band, possibly my most favourite of any genre, Their Staring at the rude boys song is probably my favourite song of all time and their album The Crack is probably my most favourite album of all time, love em. At the start of this video, singer Malcoms wearing a red t shirt thats from a live in France live set, worth watching on youtube, it really shows the musicianship and the fun they had on stage. As for punk vs postpunk they were definitely punk starting in 1977 but they could play their instruments and like The Clash also played reggae songs, so prolly where it makes them sound more post punk? Malcolm sadly died aged 26 in 1980 and only released the one album, another came out after (mainly singles and demos on it), and the aforementioned Staring at the rudeboys single, one wonders what they wouldve sounded like later on with malcolm still around, they still play as Ruts DC but will never hit the same heights as the first album and early singles.

A call to arms and as emblematic of it era as Ghost Town by The Specials, or One in Ten by UB40. Sometimes change requires a revolution, not just an election. The UK needed a revolution in 1979, we just got the wrong one.

I think there is some argument that ignorance in today’s information architecture is understandable…there’s too much information and sorting signal from noise is almost impossible. Agree with everything else you said though.

@@gertstraatenvander4684 It's alright. A lot of stuff got stolen where I was living. I lived a few blocks away from Colin Hay of Men At Work in the early 80's. He wrote ''Who Can It Be Now'' about the junkies that knocked on our doors. If they couldn't get in, they'd just force their way in and take our stuff when nobody was home. Unlike me, he made a buck out of living in that neighbourhood.

Losing Owen was a huge loss. The band have gone on to make great dub music and are a renowned rhythm section who have been on many recordings. They were early London punk, very close to Reggae band Misty In Roots- often a double bill.
