Smarty Jones is one in a lifetime horse. I love him and still send him horse cookies several times a year, 20 years later. Can't wait to visit him again in PA.
Smarty is the best horse, in my opinion, to never win the TC. I cried when stupid Birdstone (who sat out the Preakness) beat him in the Belmont. Broke my 14 year old heart.
One of the best, yes. I'd say consensus best horse to attempt and not win TC would be Spectacular Bid, in a class by himself. Then tier #2 would be Smarty Jones, Point Given and Big Brown in any order. Tier #3: Alysheba, Silver Charm, Sunday Silence, California Chrome. Barbaro likely would go in there somewhere. We didn't get to see him mature as a 3 year old. And we didn't with Smarty either, really. We saw the rest run more races and succeeed as 3-year olds (and sometimes 4-year olds). So it would be logical to say that Smarty could be placed in Tier #3 also. In any case, with each horse, there's a story and time that many of us that follow horse race can think back to and remember what it was like to be in front of the TV cheering these horses on. Great memories. Oh, and RIP Funny Cide. 😥
He never got a chance to relax the entire backside. The other jockeys didn't want some no-namer to win, so they raced with the goal of wearing Smarty down, and not letting him relax. Horses NEED to relax during the back side certainly in a 1.5 mile race. His trainer (John Servis) said this: "t Smarty was overly keyed up leading up to and on Belmont day and that Smarty couldn’t settle the way he normally did, tugging at Elliott, who tried his best to get his mount to relax during the race." It was the last hundred yards after three grueling races in five weeks of racing that did in America’s horse.

Criminal what they did to this animal in the Belmont. They threw 3 speed burners at him knowing he could not accept a challenge with his heart and he still just missed.
@mranonam I agree. All do respect to the current race callers, but it would be amazing if Durkin came back and started calling the triple crown and BC races again. His calls add drama to the races and he makes them more exciting.
@PachydermStomp Don't totally blame stewart elliott for the belmont, eddington and rock hard ten made it impossible for smarty to run his type of race in that race. And yet he still was so close, Birdstone just had him that day.
don't blame anyone or anything for this horse loosing @ Belmont, to win these 3 races you need a horse that is special who can overcome adversity and also needs some racing luck! That is why it is rarely done and incidentally that was a year with a mediocre crop of 3 year olds. Just like this year, with a turtle like last quarter in the Derby, only Eskendereya stood out as a possible star but unfortunately was injured.
This was one of the biggest sports disappointments in my lifetime as a sports fan. He looked unbeatable after running the Preakness to perfection. I watched these 3 races with my grandparents I wish I got to see a horse win the triple crown with them but sadly never did
If people weren't whining about how Tom Durkin messed up the 2009 Derby, we'd still have him calling these races. It sucks, because I don't think there's ever been anyone better than Durkin. Just listen to him.

@nvrlose37 that bastard jerry bailey....took eddington into that race with one thing in mind...to drill smarty jones into the ground...eddington turned out to be a good 4 year old...but every since bailey was shunned by chapman and service...(he asked to ride smarty jones)...and was turned down..he had it in his head that he would never let that horse win a triple crown if it were up to him...

Smarty was the best horse early in the year.. But, I dont think he would have beaten the Best Horse I've ever seen. GHOSTZAPPER !!!!
