  • Smarty Jones overcame huge odds to win the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Quickly recovering from a fractured skull he sustained during a gate schooling session as a 2-year-old, Smarty became one of two Pennsylvania-breds to capture the Derby, after which he won the Preakness by a record margin of 11 ½ lengths. He is also known as the first unbeaten Derby winner since Seattle Slew 1977. After being retired at the end of 2004 due to chronic bruising, he was acquired for stud duty by Three Chimneys. His first crops of foals are now running at tracks across the country.

Per Dr. Arthur, “You will see that things like a mare’s size, previous number of foals she has had, and month of birth are all factors which have an impact on a foal’s weight. Per 2 different studies, (one done in Australia and the other from Kentucky, the average weight of Thoroughbred foals fall into these ranges:
    Colts…122-125 pounds
    Fillies…120-121 pounds.”

Smarty Jones doesn't stand at Claiborne. He stands at Three Chimneys.

My grandma and myself watched all his races and we were very upset that he lost the Belmont. Smarty has a very special place in my heart: he was born on my birthday.

I always blamed Elliot for the loss of the Belmont. He just pushed Smarty Jones too soon on the back stretch. That race is grueling and Belmont makes it even more so. That long stretch is a bear.

Like nearly all thoroughbred racehorses, Smarty Jones ran as a two and three-year-old. Some race another year or even a few more. Millions of fans were disappointed when he was retired to stud (stud: a group of horses kept for breeding; stud farm: a breeding farm, especially of pedigreed stock; stud horse: breeding stallion) immediately after the Belmont Stakes, his only race in 9 starts that he did not win, coming in second.

Smarty Jones was retired after the Belmont for health reasons. He had some issues with bruising. Not all thoroughbreds retire at three. Secretariat ran as a four-year-old as did Seattle Slew, and others. In some cases, they do retire them due to their value as a stud or brood mare. This usually only applies to Grade 1 stakes horses though. By the way, all thoroughbreds are pedigreed. Not just the great ones like Smarty Jones.

He ran ant two and three years old. Was undefeated except for the Belmont, where he finished 2nd. He probably should have won that one too, but in my opinion, the Jockey started him too soon and got him into a match race on the back stretch. (That's roughly 40 years of racing talking though).
