You're not alone in weeping. I cried watching him win all those years ago. I watch periodically to revist my childhood equine hero as he renews my faith in the transformative magic of horses.
I’m 72 and I was 22 when I saw this race, live. Being born and raised in Oklahoma I was in the middle of sports and competition all my life, and 50 years later, I can say without hesitation, Secretariats performance in the Belmont was the greatest sporting event and achievement in history.
Wow I’m crying just watching it on my phone, I can’t imagine it in person! I’ve loved horses my whole life, I would have loved to b close to the greatness, charm, beauty, power of this amazing horse.. to see something that will live on forever in the history books.. the magnificent Secretariat
@@sugarbear1965 It was like something biblical, in the movie as he ran that race they played the gospel song Oh Happy Day, and it was absolutely exactly what it felt like.
If you can visualize Secretariat as an athlete and not just a horse, then he is the GOAT. Greater than Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady or whoever else you want to name.
@@carmenlonero5947 I just said it was the greatest sporting event I’ve ever seen! I wouldn’t put him in the class of an athlete, like those guys, but a horse who participated in the sport of racing. But if I did, he’s the greatest.
I was a young man in my early twenties; I watched Secretariat's races on a little b&w tv set. The country was in tough times. Then this horse. We needed him. We needed this pure, powerful, steady, relentless horse. I still cry watching him; Secretariat meant so much, he means so much.
What made Secretariat, undoubtedly, the greatest racehorse of all time was the fact that he was constructed in a way that no horse ever has been or likely ever will be again. He was just physically capable of doing things on a racetrack that no other horse ever could before him, or has ever been able to duplicate since, or will be able to in the future. In order to understand this, you need to understand what happened on Belmont day in June 1973. Secretariat essentially sprinted an entire mile and a half race. That is not physically possible for any other horse to do. He ran the first 6 furlongs of that race in 1:09.4, which would be a track record for that distance at many tracks in North America. He then proceeded to run the last six furlongs in 1:14.1, which is only a drop off of 4.2 seconds over the last 6 furlongs. No other horse could possibly do that. It just isn't physically possible to maintain that speed over 12 furlongs on a dirt course. From the time Secretariat put his head in front of Sham at the top of the backstretch, he never lost an inch to another horse in the race, and in fact was gaining ground with every single step he took. That is mind boggling to think about. He sprinted the first six furlongs, and the other horses were presumably conserving energy running much slower. Presumably by the the time they hit the turn to come into the home stretch the other horses should have started making up ground on Secretariat as he started to slow down. That never happened. He only increased his lead with every stride. He continued to sprint, and at a faster pace than the trailing horses that were starting to run faster themselves and had conserved energy during the first half of the race. Logically none of this is possible, but that is exactly what happened. To top it off, Secretariat ran an extra furlong after the race was over, which means he actually ran 1 5/8 miles that day. That extra furlong was timed, and he actually set a world record for a 1 5/8 race. There's been a lot of great horses, but no other horse can compare to Secretariat, because no other horse ever has been or ever will be built in such a way as to be able to do the things he did.
You forgot one thing...he did all of this without encouragement. How fast could he have ran if Ronnie had pushed him? He didn't because there was no reason but can you imagine what this time would look like if somehow another horse was pressing him or Ronnie had given him a couple taps? I don't think we ever seen him run at full throttle.
@@toddjohnson7133 I've often wondered this myself. You are absolutely right, Turcotte never used the whip, cuz as you say it was completely unnecessary. The only encouragement Secretariat received, was that Turcotte let the reins go and let the horse run his own race once they hit the backstretch and he began to pull away from Sham. But what would have happened had Turcotte even given him one tap? Well the world record for a mile and a half on turf is 2:22.3 set by Twighlight Eclipse in 2013. I'm not sure even Secretariat could have run that fast on dirt, but it's not hard to imagine that he could have gotten pretty close to that time with just a little encouragement.
@@jacktattis Yeah but who was he running against? Secretariat would probably have beaten any horse on that track because of the lead he had, 25 lengths ahead that means you could fit 25 horse between Secretariat and the first horse behind him. Has Winx won like that?
@@gingercake0907 Stop this rubbish We have turf you have Dirt. The only Horse that I can recall that did well on both was a NZ Bred /Australian trained and raced Phar Lap that did well in the US back in the 30s

What I found that was so cute is after he finished racing he just trotted off like "Hey, I had a good run today" like leaving all the other horse in the dust by 31 lengths was all in a day training. Such a talented and beautiful horse. Hands down one of the most amazing souls to grace the planet. He is truly missed.
Me too, I remember this from my childhood and when you look at it today, somehow I see how much we've lost. I know Secretariat is about hope, so I try to remember that and hope for a better future for our great country.
cadavis7261 I watched this race in black and white with my best friend when we were both in grade school. This is the first time I watched it in color. Secratariat was so amazing in that race, winning so fast and no one could catch him. We both rooted this amazing red horse on.
Sounds like my parents; they lived through the Depression and never replaced anything unless it simply broke. Every now and then I still come across a TV program I never knew was in color because my parents kept their black and white TV long after color TVs were affordable.
NYRA clearly got permission from CBS Sports to post the video. This is why the video quality is far better than the bootleg kinescopes that are typically seen of this race and this broadcast on TH-cam.
I watched the movie TWICE in the last 24 hours and when he comes thundering around that last turn ALONE with the song “Oh Happy Day” blasting, I get chills all over and I stand up and cheer! I was 12 years old when this race happened…more thrilling watching today at 63!!

@@chrishartley8884 What are you talking about? Secretariat raced against older horses as a 3 year old. He still holds the world record at a mile and a half on dirt by 8 lengths. As for who is the greatest, that can be debated...but Secretariat ran in more races than Ghostzapper did (GZ has issues with injuries and did not develop as fast as a 3 year old).
Chris Hartley, you’re way off base. Ghostzapper only raced 11 times and only a handful of his races went beyond a mile. Secretariat not only had the speed but he could run for distance as well. He would of made mincemeat of Ghostzapper!

@@DKC911 My dad was also the same age as you both, and he watched with his dad! Everyone knew their kids needed to see this, huh? Good thing - my dad showed me too!
This never ever gets old. I watched Secretariat win all of his races in 1973 and watched him in person win his last race, the Canadian International, at Woodbine. It was one of the highlights of my life. He was so fabulous.
We knew we were watching something miraculous that day - and when Chic Anderson declared "... he is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!" , it was the best description imaginable. Secretariat's autopsy revealed a heart more than two and a half times larger than normal, so when all the others were suffering oxygen debt, he was just getting his second wind.
Sham broke a bone in his leg along the backstretch, and his jockey, Laffit Pincay, sensed something wrong so he eased up and just rode him out to the finish. It had to be surgically repaired with screws, and it ended the horse's racing career. He had a successful but not spectacular record as a stud.
@@thepack74 Any other year, Sham probably wins the Triple Crown himself. An outstanding horse that also broke the track records at the Derby and the Preakness. Secretariat was simply legendary.
I've watched replays of this 73 Belmont dozens of times, and I still tear up and get goose bumps every time. Never has a horse or athlete in any sport faced so much pressure, or had such high hopes placed on him, yet somehow still manage to spectacularly exceed all expectations. This race is quite possibly the single greatest sports performance of the 20th Century. Sham was a tremendous horse in his own right, having at that time run the second fastest Kentucky Derby and Preakness in history. Yet Secretariat completely broke him on the way to his 31 length victory. The personification of true greatness.

Here, he took the lead at the start and then carried Turcotte into the history books. Almost supernatural to those watching at the time and beyond belief now. 31 lengths ahead of the rest and a record 2:24 that stands to this day. The greatest athletic feat ever.

Every member of our staff and every customer stopped what they were doing to watch the race. Almost everyone had tears in their eyes at the end. To this day I believe that race was the greatest moment in sporting history. There will never be another like him.
What a call by Chic Anderson..."a tremendous machine"...."...But Secretariat is all alone!" It's still breathtaking to watch Big Red race 48 years later. They'll never be another horse like him.
best part about Andersons call was...while he obviously was excited and raised his voice as the race went on...he wasn't screaming like a banshee at the end....Larry Collmus had a good call going with American Pharoah's Belmont Stakes...then ruined it by screaming at the top of his lungs at the finish...
I was so fortunate to be there and watch this race... I was eleven years old and we went to Belmont and Aqueduct quite frequently to watch the horses run. I will never forget this race and I will never forget that horse.
I always liked the story of Jack Nicklaus watching this race on TV at his home. He started weeping uncontrollably and had no idea why. He mentioned this to a a sports writer. The writer told Nicklaus he was weeping because he, as an athlete, had witnessed something rare: perfection in sports.
Not lost on this veteran is the symbolism of hearing Secretariat "is moving like a tremendous machine" at the exact same time the camera pans past his nation's flag because Red's performance made the entire country proud that day.

I’ve been a big sports fan my entire 72 years and and teams I’ve rooted for have won many championships ( even the Cubs), but this horse is STILL my fondest sport memory.
I never get tired of watching him run. He was a racehorse for the ages. I’ve read a couple of excellent books on him from the time he was born until the sad last days of his life. He was a champion in all the right ways. If I could go back and watch any sporting event today, it would be Secretariat winning the final race of the Triple Crown.
Would you mind giving us the names of the books you think are excellent? I've never read a book about Secretariat, although I read one about Man o'War that I really enjoyed, and a YA book about Exterminator called "Old Bones, the Wonder Horse" that sparked an interest in thoroughbred racing.
This race started with five horses but quickly became a match between Sham and Secretariat. Sham was a valiant horse but at the 1:00 mark, the truly unthinkable started to happen. Secretariat, at that moment, decided to run into the history books! He accelerated away from Sham and galloped into the Twilight Zone. With every yard, he and Turcotte left the others in his dust and increased his lead. At 1:40, things got surreal! A performance never-before-seen took place...an awesome display that raised goosebumps and brought tears to the eyes! It was almost a religious experience to see this horse race for the finish line. An equine still unequaled, unrivaled and unique!
It was right about that time when Sham fractured the cannon bone in one of his legs, and his jockey recognized that something was wrong with his horse. He eased him off the pace and just rode him out to the finish---not that he would have beaten Secretariat on that day even with 4 healthy legs. However, while he never beat Secretariat for a win, he did beat him for second place in the Wood Memorial.
" He is moving like a tremendous machine!" Those words alone still have the power to bring tears to my eyes and put a lump in my throat.God,what a horse!!

I remember watching those races years ago. That big red horse was an athlete. And if I'm correct he graced the cover of sports illustrated . And is the only animal listed among humans as one of the greatest athletes. To this day I get emotional every time I watch him run. Amazing.
I think I have watched the video (the real one and the movie) many hundreds of times - I tear up all the way through. I think Red was a horse that really liked humans - because the humans around him were very affectionate towards him. Horses know which people are nice and which ones don't really care except how they perform. I love the part where announcer exclaims "He's all alone. He's almost a 1/16 mile away from all the other horses!" Red looks so relaxed at that incredible speed. Wow!
Penny Chenery devoted many years to make sure Secretariat would not be forgotten, that he would be remembered for what he accomplished. I'm sure Secretariat loved her, but on the day that Penny visited Claiborne farms to visit, it was Riva Ridge that came up to her and not Secretariat.
I just read where Turcotte said that when he crossed the finish line, he wasn't breathing hard and hadn't even broken a sweat. Hard to believe unless you go back to the Preakness. Look when he crosses that line: fresh as a daisy.
I never saw him in person only in the movies. I cry everytime I can't imagine what it was like to see this in person. This had to be an unbelievable moment for everyone who was blessed to witness this spectacular moment.

Best video of the race I’ve ever seen. Just really sharp and it gives a true impression of how fast BIG RED was going. I still can’t figure out how Ronnie Turcotte managed to stay on the horse!!! What a horse. I’m glad I was alive to see the race even if it was only on TV and not at the track. I remember getting off the couch and getting closer to the tv while shouting “Go Red, Go!!” I’ll never forget it!!! The greatest sporting event in history.
I read one interview of Ron Turcotte where he said that the last part of the race just felt strange, because usually you hear the cacophony of the hooves of the other horses nearby. This time coming around the turn and into the stretch, Secretariat had eclipsed the field by such an unbelievable amount that Ron was running in quiet. He did turn around once and look back in two famous photographs.
Ron Turcotte turned to look at the clock and saw how far back the other horses were and was surprised. He knew from the lack of the other horses' hoofbeats that he was ahead, but he did not know he was THAT far ahead. Turcotte said that Secretariat really did feel like "a tremendous machine." Top jockeys say that Secretariat is the horse they would have most liked to experience riding. I've heard horse people say that all the attributes (large heart, perfect gait, etc) must have come together in Secretariat more than any other horse. They sometimes use the expression "the horse that God built."

Chills while watching this. Secretariat retired to a farm just outside of the town I lived in. I’ll never forget hearing of his passing and seeing clips of the good-natured champion hamming it up for almost every photographer who was around. Those clips are tear-jerkers, as we see the stallion run up to a fence, look at visitors, and then take off as fast as he could.

He didn't slow down the minute he passed the finish line. His momentum carried him through 1 5/8 miles in time that would have beaten the Belmont track record.
It can be argued for, Man o' War. Belmont time was 2:14 at 1 3/8 mile. Beat record at that time by 3 seconds. And that was an endurance horse. I think he could have beaten Secretariat. But to many factors are involved to really know. How fun would that be to watch?

I. Am so touched by this horse this race and what you said
What made Secretariat, undoubtedly, the greatest racehorse of all time was the fact that he was constructed in a way that no horse ever has been or likely ever will be again.
You nailed it. I was a very young girl when this one of a kind horse ran. I watched all three races. I have never forgotten. None of us have.
Dean Eden is a genius
You know times can be adjusted, Just saying.
Hes the GOAT, even 50 years later. Still brings chills and tears to watch him race these 3 races.

@Hector Rodriguez That accomplishment was more Wilt Chamberlain-like. And if you don't know what that means go look at the record books.
Secretariat never raced as a horse, age considered, Ghostzapper is the greatest racehorse ever
Incredible. Perhaps the greatest performance in the history of sports.
Strongly concur. I watched on TV as a 12 year-old. Didn't grasp the significance but I knew I saw something special.

I watched Secretariat win all of his races in 1973 and watched him in person win his last race, the Canadian International, at Woodbine.
It was one of the highlights of my life.
He was so fabulous.
Seeing his last race must have been incredible
We knew we were watching something miraculous that day - and when Chic Anderson declared "... he is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!" , it was the best description imaginable. Secretariat's autopsy revealed a heart more than two and a half times larger than normal, so when all the others were suffering oxygen debt, he was just getting his second wind.
Kind of like Janet Evens the great American swimmer that has a super efficient heart.
Sham also had a large heart at 18 lbs. He just didn't have the rest of the attributes that made Secretariat great.
I did not know about Sham's injury. What hard luck. So glad he went on and recovered.
He didn't face pressure. The owners did. He was more like "Oh, you want me to run!" So he did

At the 1:00 minute mark, Secretariat made his move. He had astonished people in the Derby and Preakness by coming from the rear to win. Here, he took the lead at the start and then carried Turcotte into the history books. Almost supernatural to those watching at the time and beyond belief now. 31 lengths ahead of the rest and a record 2:24 that stands to this day. The greatest athletic feat ever.

@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
I get tears every time I watch
I remember watching this race live when I was 10yo. Even then we knew that we were watching history. Secretariat was the greatest athlete of all time.
I was at work in a restraunt with a bar in 1989 when Secretariat died. The local news came on and after announcing he had passed they played the video of the Belmont. Every member of our staff and every customer stopped what they were doing to watch the race. Almost everyone had tears in their eyes at the end. To this day I believe that race was the greatest moment in sporting history. There will never be another like him.
To me, it's #2, behind only the Miracle on Ice Game.
I read a few years ago of how the vets were sobbing as they put him down then they saw the size of his huge heart.
This is still the most awesome athletic performance I've ever seen.
I was so fortunate to be there and watch this race... I was eleven years old and we went to Belmont and Aqueduct quite frequently to watch the horses run. I will never forget this race and I will never forget that horse.
too cool, everyone must have been yelling at the top of their lungs...
I always liked the story of Jack Nicklaus watching this race on TV at his home. He started weeping uncontrollably and had no idea why. He mentioned this to a a sports writer. The writer told Nicklaus he was weeping because he, as an athlete, had witnessed something rare: perfection in sports.
Secretariat was the only non-human athlete to make Sports Illustrated's list of 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, at #81. 🏆
Should have been number one!

The best comment I ever heard about Secretariat was... "He was a flawed horse. Flawed only because he had been handled by human beings."
Bill Nack. He was closer to Secretariat than anyone, and he has some amazing stories. I need to buy his book!
"Eye roll"
I thought Eddie was closer to him than anyone?
Still love watching Secretariat take off
I never get tired of watching him run.
Sham deserves fame and glory for this effort- he set the pace, then he lit Secretariat's fuse- the rest is history. They were 1st cousins!
Secretariat could have stopped, had a sip of water, and still beat the rest. The best race horse of all time. An absolute beast!!

Wow!
so true Turcotte's hands were so quiet as he and Sham were competing for the lead and you had it right ( relaxed )with a tremendous sense of purpose
Look when he crosses that line: fresh as a daisy.

i was there when this horse won

The greatest athlete of all time. Tearing up is a given. We've witnessed perfection in a gOAT, not horse.
At work wore out and just had to watch this to rejuvenate me and calm my soul for a moment. Thank you God and Secretariat.
Ditto!
I never get tired of watching this horse. Greatest racehorse ever.
I saw the Triple Crown races that year on our family TV 📺 at my parents house ! It was Amazing - I remember my dads excitement as Secretariat came around the last turn alone and across the finish line in the Belmont Stakes . It was breath taking to see that tremendous charge to the finish line . We will never see another horse like him because he truely was the horse that God built !!! It’s 2024 and I am 70 yrs old . I still love these 3 races each year because my dad made it a family tradition to be right there in front of the TV to watch these events - I still love it 🥰 . I always hope for that Triple crown horse but I know I will never see another SECRETARIAT ever again !!!
I was 17 and this was huge at the time. I'm telling you, this horse had a flair for the dramatic. A perfect day in America, as any can be, save those of war-time victories.
2 and 3/5 seconds - that’s a LOT to break a record by! And it STILL STANDS in 2024 (set 1973) he was the greatest horse I’ve ever seen.
And he was just hand riding him - imagine if he’d taken the crop to him 🤭⚡️⚡️ - maybe 40 lengths ahead…
