    Sixty five years ago i was plowing with an Allis Chalmers H D -5 , the field was a half mile long . The steady clank-clank of the tracks put me to sleep, five furrows through the fence and ending at a big tree ! Lucky tractor had the blade on ! Never lived that one down !!!

    The Cat cutting the furrows really shows how robust these pieces of equipment are to farmers. This really rounds out the use and action of the equipment you work on.

    You have to give the “old engineers” credit, when you can take a fleet of 80 plus year old equipment and do a full days work and have perfect results, they were light years ahead of their time. Keep living the good life!

    I grew up on a farm where we had a lot of rich low land that was nearly always muddy. From the time I was11 years old until high school graduation, I put over 1570 hours on out D2 pulling a 3 -16 Juhn Deere plow. That was from '61 ,- '68. Fun to watch this video!

    Seeing the crawler plowing brings back memories on the farm. I grew up in eastern North Dakota where we used a TD-9 IH to pull a tandem hitch of two 4-14 inch John Deere plows. It did a great job and blew our 4010 JD out of the water. It could only pull a 5 bottom. A great video. Thanks for doing it.

    That was great. Brought back memories of mom running the twenty pulling a 8 disc and my sister and I behind mom with giant aluminum salt shakers like they still use for french frys. Shaking out seed . Mo. And my brother had pulled out 20 acres of sage brush to do this using a antique hand forged logging chain behind the twenty. It rained and the field turned green. The next day it was all gone. Deer and jack rabbits ate it all. The following February 1969 we had 18" of snow on the ground. Followed by a pineapple Express that night. Almost 2 feet of rain in 12 hours. It was a continuous cloud burst. The rain was coming down so hard it was coming up thru the floorboards of our cabin. Mom went out in it and was digging a diagonal trench to divert the water coming off the hill side when lightning hit the pole behind her. At that same time. Deputy chet Larson was on a seebee td3 trying to rescue some stranded teen campers. Flash flood swamped them as they were crossing sespe creek the next valley over.

    As a youth growing up and working on a farm I can remember plowing late into the night (2-3 am) with a plow that had 5 or 6 18" bottoms to get the fields done before winter. I remember pulling back on the throttle as I came to the end then pulling up the front of the plow and timing pulling up the back of the plow to make the bottoms come out of the ground as close to the same point as possible. Then stomping on the break to make the quick turn in time to keep the tractor or plow from going into the fence. Then making a sharp turn to get back into the furrow going the opposite way and again timing the dropping of the front and then rear of the plow and once it was down pushing the throttle up to full. Over and over and over again until I had dreams (or nightmares) about it.
    With that trip 3-bottom plow you can't get that nice even edge to the end of the row as all 3 bottoms drop at the same time and you end up with the triangle at each end.
    At the end of the plowing season, while those moldboards were still nice and shinny, we would wash then down, dry them off, and spray paint them to keep the rust away. No professional spray job required, just get it on there. Streaks and runs were no problem. ;^D
    Interesting seeing a caterpillar pulling ONLY 3 bottoms. I have images in my mind of cats pulling 14 bottom plows. (ganged 7s) Though I do think that the plow on your cat was the plow with the cleanest cut and best looking turn over. Good job on the setup.
    Why didn't you just over seed or grain drill the field rather than plowing it all up?

    • @KStewart-th4sk
      @KStewart-th4sk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind of plow is that where you say "pulling up the front of the plow and timing pulling up the back of the plow"? Is that a hydraulically operated plow? Having trouble picturing how that works. You say it was a 5 or 6 bottom. Would like to see one up close, how the moldboards are mounted to the frame, etc. that you can vary----- i assume you were doing the same thing when dropping the plow. Anyone else familiar with this?

    • @InquisitiveSearcher
      @InquisitiveSearcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KStewart-th4sk : Definitely hydraulically controlled. The front of the plow was hooked to the lower arms of the 3-point hitch and the back wheel, which did run in the furrow left by the last bottom, was raised/lowered with a one way hydraulic cylinder. I would turn the tractor into the furrow and as the back wheel of the tractor also fell in to the furrow the 3-point hitch would be lowered to put the first bottom into the ground. Then I would gradually lower the back of the plow (this happens fairly quickly) in such a way as to get each following bottom to enter the ground at approximately the same point as where the first bottom went into the ground. Once all 5 or 6 bottoms were in the ground I shoved the throttle to full and off I'd go for another half mile. Then back again and again and again.
      On a 3-point mounted plow you don't have a "hitching point" on a drawbar. Instead, you measure the cut of the first bottom then loosen some very heavy bolts and slide the front of the plow one way or the other in the 3-point hitch frame. Then you adjust the swing of the plow to get the following bottoms to cut the correct width. Loosening those bolts in the hitch attachment isn't easy, their BIG, you need a big breaker bar to do it. However, once the adjustment is done the plow will follow correctly behind any tractor with a 3-point hitch with the tires set up for the same width crop row.

    • @InquisitiveSearcher
      @InquisitiveSearcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KStewart-th4sk : If you want to see the kind of setup I'm talking about go to this video and at 12:50 an IH 1066 comes by that is very much the setup we had. Which means it was a 5 bottom plow we had, not a 6. th-cam.com/video/YElYXFwlGiE/w-d-xo.html

      1. Yes.

      4. Speed is always correlated to iron wear.
