I hope you son realizes how blessed he is to have a father like he does. Love your channel!
I hope the father realizes how blessed he is to have a son like he does.
He does, that's a good kid, great dad and awesome family!
Looks like the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Looking forward to your next project
Could always be that father to your kids
Nothing says fatherly love like aluminum heads and roller rockers.
About the camshaft problem.....I rebuilt my own small block chevy in my living room when I was 24. It ran great in my 72 4x4.... until it didn't. When the autopsy was done it was determined that I installed the cam wrong and the lifters didn't spin on the cam lobe and wore the lifters in one spot and wiped out the cam lobes and lifters and sent metal through the entire engine. It was a good lesson though. Awesome truck by the way 👌
When he threw that wave to the oncoming truck! 🤗 You can tell he's going to be so proud and happy with what they have built!!
It was the Napa parts guy he waved at....I think he was following him in hopes that he would be able to sell him more parts when he breaks down!
When I was a kid, I was just happy that my dad let me drive his truck. Landon's dad is building one for him. Way to go Paul.
Not for him, with him. The most valuable thing we can give our kids is our time.
When it failed I wanted to say does the cam have a problem but I never expected to see that problem. The happiness on Landons face made it all worth it. I could hear that Big Block Torque when you got on it. Very Nice Truck and a very good job getting it there.
Last clip of the video is absolutely Priceless!
Lando is one luck guy, this is something he will remember for a long time!
Always good to see Superhero Dar!
Half a pound of metal is only 8 ounces! Winning!
Thanks for sharing!
A smart man learns from his mistakes a wise man watches fab rats and learns from Paul’s mistakes great video glad you finally got it handled
and did we not learn
So good to see dad and son working on a project together and also having setbacks that Paul was able to work through with him.
Great life learnings as life is full of setbacks.
Well done team.
Now this is a actual build with problems and this is more of a reality than most videos that throw a car together in a couple of videos with no problems.
Yeah Its the best part makes it real because that crap happens to real people crap goes wrong!
totally
I came here to say just this… reality is better.
I've put many cars together, and didn't have problems. Problems don't always have to happen.
@@davelowets The issues are mostly with upgrades and modifications and old machines. Parts are a problem too, I found I could only rely on a few suppliers for good parts. What about rust and stuff seized up though?
I am a retired maintenance and reliability engineer in the oil industry, worked around the world, heaviest 'cylinder head' we lifted weighed in at 50 tons. Restored cars too, there is always something waiting to bite you
In my 40 plus years of building engines I have never seen that with a camshaft . You can tell Landon is so happy and grateful for what you guys have done to his truck . Many happy smiles per gallon coming. Take care and be safe to you all .
I like those mirrors. They do their job. Gives me the warm fuzzies to see tall, new tires on an old truck!
just watch the blind spot!
Not gonna last very long when trail riding though.
Love this GMC father son build and can't wait to see it running. Also love @2:30 how that there FJ is looking in the background and look forward to the next video on it.
Watching this gives me such joy. I built a 1982 GMC with my dad at 17. He bought a short block and a Chilton's book and said get after it. Best thing her ever did!!!
While I realize I'm way behind in making this comment, I wanted to express my gratitude to Paul and the entire FabRats team for sharing so much insight with your channel. Not many folks would show the downside of their adventures. While I have enjoyed so many of your episodes so far you have truly earned my admiration with this one! Major Kudos!! I'm not much of a gearhead, but have developed more knowledge and confidence to work on my own vehicles by simply enjoying your content. Merry Christmas and happy New year to the FabRat family/team.
NOT FINISHED YET, he's gonna need mud flaps if he meets that cop again. Good job on getting her fixed up
I've never heard of such a thing with it being that low to the ground and it isn't stock. If he had BFG TAKOs, it's like a shotgun blast with every pass, flaps or not. Those tires love grabbing and throwing asphalt! That would be like them telling me to put mudflaps on my 10" lifted TJ. He could fight that ticket.
@@Aint1S fight and lose unfortunately...
And fender flares!
eBay is a gamble, been there in similar situations. I try t stay away from them, unless there's no other choice. Sorry you went thru that trouble! That kid's happy face is worth a million bucks!!!!
I love the fact that you don't edit out the issues alone the way. Showing your son to not let setbacks stop you, is a valuable lesson
so stoked for lando! he's so lucky to have a dad like you! absolutely blessed
Great job, I always love an old square body. It was nice to see this whole thing from start to finish and then see the kid driving it.
Oh yeah I absolutely agree with Lando, you gotta leave those West Coast Mirrors on it. They look great !!!!
The smile on Landon's face says it all! Thanks for being the kind of dad all kids need.
Life is full of lessons, sometimes hard one's. Good times with the family is golden. May your path be clear, wind fill your sailes , good job Paul and Michelle.
Perfect style of feel good content, not too many animals being rescued, just good willed & hard working folks who are fun to be around. Thanks for sharing!
Congratulations Landon. Your patience and maturity through the entire process shows the world you're going to continue being a fine young man.
Landon’s eyes gave away his excitement. It brought tears to my eyes. I love this family. ❤️👍
Congrats Landon! Can't wait to you see you go off road one day with dad, Stay safe and keep the speed down.
Paul, first..., the Toyota in the background is a tease. 2nd I've been around a lot of engines and never come across or ever heard tell of until now, the situation with the cam.
Great video all!
Same here.
I really liked the story today. It warmed my heart to see a good Father create for his good son his first truck. And to see the son's grateful smile made it all worth it. God bless your family!
Everyone remembers their first car/truck. It’s a big bonus memory that he rebuilt it with his dad. Landon congrats on a great first truck!
A boy…his Dad and a truck…man if that ain’t cool I don’t know what is! Congrats Lando that is one BADA55 truck my friend, be safe and have fun! 👍👍👍
That’s awesome!! The maiden voyage!! Truck looks great! Good job guys! I told y’all, Paul saves a lot of headaches for us all! Keep the mirrors, they look classic and keep character on the truck! Lando likes em… 🤷🏻♂️😎
many kids will envy Landon of having a father like Paul, though many father can buy their kids a truck but not many can build truck with their kids happy for both of you
Now that is a happy kid right there! So cool seeing young ones get involved! Learning new skills and putting in the work for their own vehicles. Props to him as well!
So awesome to see three generations working together. God bless your family 😍
Amazing build! Junk Ebay cam made for a cool video :) Super sweet truck, can't wait to see it in action!
Awesome! Now we can move on to the fj!!!! I've been waiting very patiently for this
So awesome to see it running! And I agree w/ Landon, leave the mirrors.
Hi Brother Ben! Good to see someone keep these wild men in check.
Congrats on getting the old GMC fixed and I'm sure Landon is very happy to be able to have his truck back you're a good dad to be able to fix his truck up I miss my dad doing things with me but I just want to say thank you God bless you have a great day weekend thanks for the videos very awesome
Awesome build. The look on Landon’s face is worth a million bucks. The best part was it’s something he got to do with his dad. Priceless.
I could almost feel the joy that Landon was feeling. Thanks Dad!
This was an amazing father son project. I hope to build some cars with my girls when they are driving age. This will be something your son will never forget.
Congratulations dad, well done! That was the permagrin I expected. I think the young man has a very capable truck, and he looks mighty proud.
One of a kind to top it off.
What great parents! A lucky Boy to have a Dad and Mom that love you so much! Incredible value in what your Dad is sharing with you.
Congratulations Landon! Leave the mirrors on it’s your truck do it up like you like. Be proud and take care of it. And big props to the parents for making this happen
Great job rolling another meaningful job out of the FabRats shop. Congratulations to you all!
Nice truck, I think the mirrors fit the character just fine. Congrats "Lando" how does it feel to be one of the youngest bucks around with a big block and a manual transmission?
..and two of the most awesome parents on the planet. He's a very lucky young man!
I agree, those are great mirrors and fit the truck, I am looking for a set currently for my "new" 81 C30 I just got and am working on to replace the small mirrors it came with when I bought it.
Hell of a father, Hell of a grand dad too. Get build. Great experience and it's a great looking truck too. Good thing the flat bed is 6'8 still. He can go to baseball practice and after he can work on his home runs and teach a girl or 2 why they call it a headache rack. Sorry mom, didn't mean to say he's no longer your little baby boy 🤣 just Joshin, good kid y'all got. Did a great job raising him. Sure it took the village. Glad to see him spending his money on a truck addiction... instead of a drug addiction. New to your channel. Glad I found yas
“Brand new tires! REALLY??!!”. Landon, that is EXACTLY what this cheap old man thinks every time I see someone roasting tires. GOOD ATTITUDE young man!
That cam issue is a first. I've never seen a cam that was like that one. The rig looks and sounds great. Like what you did with the bed.
What a team! Really, what a team !! You guys are so respectful, your familial values are to die for, and your communal values are outa this world. No trash talking, no gutter language and certainly no questionable behavior, like apple pie, motherhood and personal integrity, all rolled into one gorgeous unit. I've got to say it again: What a team!!!
Fantastic,..I am sure that there are a lot of us people that wish that we had a Dad with your knowledge and skill set to build with us assisting Dad on the repair and customizing of our first vehicle.
So happy that this project is completed and we got to see Landon and driving it. Landon, go put 250k miles on it. 😀
That’s 30k in gas !
@@Conan-ny1um thats some ground level comment :).
Hope Landon makes lot of $$
When you have that much metal in the engine, you should always pull the motor and inspect the main bearings as well, I hope it will not give you any problems, but it will not last long. Love your show.
Well done guys. Time to enjoy driving it Lan. Hope it gives you years of safe wheeling.
Congratulations on getting the truck done. Keep us posted on future progress on it, Landon is a lucky kid. Great first truck!
Regarding eBay after you search for something you can go to filter and choose "item location". It doesn't filter out all the Chinese junk but it cuts down on quite a bit of it. You can choose US only, North America, worldwide, etc.
@@redrider7730 bezos's jungle company is almost all Chinese knockoff garbage. Fake reviews, crappy products, the works! Shop American, shop local! When you can at least.
@@redrider7730 Amazon is just as bad as eBay. Buyer beware.
The biggest problem is that he ordered a Comp Cam, which is a well known and trusted brand. The one he received was an illegal knockoff. The only real red flag would have been that the price was significantly lower than ordering from a trusted source (Summit, Jegs ect).
If it is something minor and easy to change after the fact, ebay or amazon is fine to make the gamble on. If it is a critical internal engine part, you should be paying up for the good stuff. Engine internals are not the place to try and save money.
That look on Lando’s face when he’s driving down the road for the first time, priceless. 👍
That is awesome. Congratulations, Landon. Great work, Paul.
What an awesome build, your boy is gonna be the envy of his peers with such a cool truck. Good job guys!
I like the mirrors, I especially love the GRIN on Paul’s face when he got on it, like Vice Grip Garage says, giver er some onions!
I like them too but you
need fold-able mirrors for the tight spots.
Sorry for the cam trouble but I'm glad you brought us along - congrats Landon! Now We can't wait to see you wheelie together on your next Rubicon trip!
Yea Landon! There are some great times ahead for you, young man. Just please be careful.
its that big wide smile that makes every second of a dads work worthwhile i reckon..well done team Fabrats. Is it 40 time now? pleeeeaaaase?
That is one great dad right there. Teaching his son how to work and making a cool truck.
One of my best memories was working on cars with my dad. You guys have something special there. God Bless!
Landon’s smile at the end makes it all worth it! Good work papa Paul!
Reminds me of building my truck at 16. Didn't have a shop so I did it out in the yard, had to cover the motor between each working session to keep the wind from blowing it full of sand. Finally got it all together and couldn't get it started for a month due to electrical problems. Finally got it together and was terrified to ever take it apart again hahaha.
So happy for the kid! Wish I had a truck like that at his age :-) As always, great job Paul!
Great Video Thanks for sharing your family. Paul and Melissa great parenting. When I was young many lessons both good and bad were learned in the shop. I learned much from just listening. Have a great Day. Thanks for keeping it real
love it.... though based on the recent Taco ticket his new new truck is gonna need fender flares and mud flaps .....
I was going to say the same thing hahahaha
🤗😂😂
In NC, forget the mud flaps, we get tickets for not wearing seatbelts 🤣
Our TurnSignals need to have a minimum equivalent area of a 3"circle. Those single CREE LED's ( tho admittedly some can be "Maglite BRIGHT" 😎 ) would never pass inspection here.
Many , many D.M.V. / D.O.T. regs throughout the various States haven't kept up with current designs &/or current technology.
Wow! What a great video. The realism of what a struggle it is to put a truck together really is. The fact that that boy has a truck it took me 38 years to get is the coolest! Nice job!!!!💯🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Landons smile when test driving should have been worth all of the grief.
Congrats on finally getting it going. You have a beautiful truck and in the years to come, you'll realize just how blessed you were to have gone through the experience with your family. Enjoy the truck, but more so enjoy the memories of getting to this point.
Leave the mirrors. Truck looks great! Thanks for making these videos!
I like the old school look!
I absolutely adore your family and how you all love one another. Another great video you all. ❤️❤️
Well done! It's super exciting to see it up and running. Glad you got the engine sorted out. I was so happy to hear Paul's quick comment about fixing the steering wheel be during the test drive. 😅 The OCD bug jumped up and tried to bite me there. 😂 👍🏻🥳
Yep, and he also noted it handled poorly, so not only get the wheel straightened, it likely needs a full alignment and maybe something else to help the ride/handling a bit, but you can only do so much with a true 4x4 though.
Michael you said soldering just perfect, Paul left out the L and said Sodering. I live in England in the UK and your pronunciation was just perfect for my ears. You are good parents and have done Landon well. He will always look back with immense love for the time he spent tinkering with his dad. The mirrors are fine if Landon likes them - unless you are going to put up for a different pair (wink, wink). I got to watching your channel through Matts channel you guys are ace. The girls too, thought I'd best add that to be fair as they are a large part of what you both do.
Paul’s got a bit of demolition derby, race car driver in him that has to test the limits! Great build and problem solving though!
Congratulations Landon! don't forget to tell your dad thank you. Your mom and dad are awesome!!
You can replace those mirrors after Lan rips them off wheeling it...
Awesome to see the truck running! You all look so happy driving around finally!
Absolutely brilliant ending, great teamwork gets you places! Big admiration Paul and congrats Lando on the truck running! Many happy Mile's and health to drive 👍🇮🇪
So cool to see the truck running. What a nice father and son project. Drive safe Landon.
Now I know why "Vice Grip Garage" calls it "Evilbay". Not much standing between the consumer and the vendor. I've heard / experienced why you take your chances with EBAY. All that being said, I'm glad Landon finally has his rig up & runnin. Nice truck Landon
Awesome…Paul is like a teenager. He had to drop the clutch and do a burnout! Love it.
I would let Landon decide on the mirrors. Glad to see he has a great mentor.
I like the old school look!
Your not the only one that bought one of those bad comp cams. I put one of those in a 383 stroker I built for my 53 Willys Wagon. The day after I got it running I left Colorado for nw Washington. It was 2000 mile drive. By the time I got there it was barely running. Tore it down at my daughter's house and installed a new cam and lifters. Drove it back to Colorado without any trouble. I feel your pain .
So happy it’s together! What an awesome rig. Keep the mirrors, love that style!
Awesome! Looks and sounds great. I’m going thru the same thing with my boy. He just turned 15 and last year I bought a 76 k20 for myself but as soon as I got it home he was all over it. Runs good but needed some tlc. Have been sinking some money into it this past year. Waiting for Mickey Thompson to get their act together and send us some wheels. Headers and exhaust going on soon plus a few other things. Should be ready by February when he’s ready for his permit.
Much love to the FabRat TH-cam family..🤪🥳👍🏼🖖🏼👊🏼❤🇺🇸
So excited for Landon to have is truck running! Excellent job hanging in there with it, lots of challenges but sure was worth it!
It's awesome to see how happy Landon is with his truck. Way to go dad!
Awesome build! I really enjoy watching your videos! Something I have run across with flat tappet lifters is the lack of Zinc in modern oils. The racing oils still have zinc in them or you can get a zinc additive. I have seen cams roasted on initial start up due to low zinc oils. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to the crawler build videos!
Where does Paul’s brother live/work “up north”? Maybe us northern Utahns can send some work his way!
I was thinking the same thing
Holy hell I’m not the only one! I had this same problem on a small block. Sucks so bad. Was losing our minds getting to the bottom of it. Make sure you ck the gear on your distributor mine got chewed up and kept messing up the timing after surviving through the brain damage. Love the channel reminds a lot of builds with my Pops. Hellva a 1st ride big block stick, square body custom flatty. BA for sure. Way cool dad moments throughout!
"brand new tires! really?" that was great lol
He’s just pretending to care for the camera. Landon will be ripping burnouts himself once mom and dad aren’t in the truck with him. I give those back tires a year.
I HATE hate hate burn outs
@@MaggieMay-bc9vu WWWHHHAAATTT?
Fantastic build! It's great to see it finally finished
Michelle was technically right on soldering! But I've only ever heard people from across the pond pronounce it that way.
The L is there for a reason after all.

psychology.
Paul, good thing the dynamite wasn't close by! Thanks for taking us along on the Landon Big Block (sans CCP cam) project!
Those are the best mirrors for that truck
Got to appreciate the fact that Landon was upset about Paul burning up the new tires! Awesome truck! He'll enjoy that thing for years to come, and appreciate it so much more with the investments he's made into it. Great example of giving new driver's an ownership in their vehicle rather than something they just get.
