Lights, Shelves, Action! | Finishing the Seed Room

- With the ceiling lights wired and the outlets in place, we were ready to set up shelves and grow lights in anticipation of the upcoming spring season when we will start thousands of seeds for our 2025 summer garden. The seed room turned out more beautiful than we could have imagined and after starting seeds in our cabins for 5 years, we are grateful to finally have a dedicated space where the dirt is welcomed.

Does anyone else hit like the button first before they start watching! I do!
Me too!
I love that too !!! I’m silly that way.
Yes
Yes, cause if I wait, I want be able to without clicking on the video again. But, I have never disliked the videos.
ALWAYS!!! I KNOW I’m going to love it!! They could plaster a wall and I would love the way they do it!!!
That opening with the moose and the bird, and the snow, and the music. It was truly amazing. The way you put all the shots together is mind blowing.
I could fall asleep watching it.
Don't forget that cat.
😊
Yes, so beautiful and peaceful, it gave me a moment of calm during such a stressful time.
I love your high fives. You guys are awesome at being each other’s biggest fans-the secret to a great marriage. Keep up the good work!
It's amazing that moose, being such large animals, can survive snowy, harsh winters eating just twigs and stems.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again..there’s really nothing you two can’t do! I can see the excitement in Arielle’s face as those grow lights went on! The room is perfect. Let the growing begin 😊
Cut a 9-12 inch hole in the planting bench and put a pail underneath - easily brush dirt / debris cleanup! Really enjoy your videos!
I watch a lot of TH-cam videos of Alaska Homestead people you are my most favorite. I look so forward each week to your videos. You seem like you have such a wonderful love for each other and work so well together it brightens my day to watch you.❤
Wow! Now you are able to have back your house space in the Winter! Only things missing are Bo and Bandit and their beds! I miss them! ❤️🌞🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Are both dogs gone? I know one has sadly passed but has the second dog gone too?
@@johnyb9884- yes, sadly they both are gone now.
Do you also have a weird need to pinch people while they are healing to see if they still feel pain? At least you are extremely friendly about it ❤️🩹
they still have Pepper the Cat.
@@judyabernathy80aww I didn't know I haven't watched them in a couple months
Love those intros. They capture Alaska's spirit so well.
Love the idea of pallets on casters for your floor plants!
Eric, Arielle, if you have read all of these comments, congratulations! Your channel is growing so fast now with 829 thousand subscribers! I used to feel like the world needed to discover you - like I did. NOW THE WORLD IS DISCOVERING YOU! HOORAY!
I have serious seed room envy. It's beautiful. Who else has a sudden need for coffee when you start watching? I may drink 3 cups in a single episode. I don't dare binge watch, I wouldn't sleep for days! I know you get a lot of your seed from Territorial seed, but if you ever want to try some different beans, try taking a look at Vermont Bean seed. I loved growing my own dry beans and they had some different seeds, and they were tasty! ❤❤To all Lori
Thank you, I will check them out! 😁 I actually did purchase several varieties of shelling and dry beans I want to try. Our climate isn't fantastic for them but they sound so good fresh!
@@loristephens3016 , I started looking at and buying from Territorial just because Arielle does! So, now, I’m going straight to Vermont Beans to look at their seeds!! I’ve not grown seed beans before and I need to do that!! Thanks for letting me steal from you and Arielle! Happy Growing 2025!🥰❤️
@kimeverhart6253 Hey, keep in touch! I've got an order ready to go in.
@@loristephens3016 👌🏻🥰✨👏🏼👏🏼❤️
I think you could start pole beans earlier in the seed room, and put them on mini poles? And then just pop the plant and the mini pole next to the final pole in the ground?
That's really terrific, y'all. I'm happy for you both to get the seed room up and running. Ariel is going to make plant magic happen in that place.
Sweltering over here in Australia watching a winter wonderland on my phone. ❤ 🇦🇺
That's how you learn.
Me too, 28degrees in Brisbane 🇦🇺🦘
Same, 40c tomorrow in Perth. Watching the snow, jumpers and beanies cool me down!
It’s not only functional, it’s gorgeous.
What a way to end my weekend, hot cup of coffee and 44 min. with my favorite TH-camrs. )
Love watching you guys projects.
Love your kitty just hanging out looking at the moose in your yard. I'm thrilled when I see my little deer friends running through my back yard (except in the Summer when they eat everything). I can't imagine having a moose there and that's just a regular day. What a life!
Pepper thinks it's a really big dog!😂
The look on Ariel’s face when you turned on the seed room lights was priceless. Well done !
感謝你有逐句翻譯,我很喜歡你們夫妻之間的對話。你對機械 、電機、電力、木工的知識及動手能力是無人能比。每次影片都讓我驚訝。喜歡你們❤❤
What an achievement your sprout house is a credit to you both, The enjoyment you bring to so many people taking us on your journey.❤
I love that you called it a “sprout house). That certainly brings a smile!😊
That seed room will be so loved as time goes along for the two of you!
What an amazing grow room. You can always put a shelve under your wonderful bench for extra storage and easy to grab items!!! Another great job, wish all young adults were as self reliant as the two of you
Love the progress you guys are making.
Wow, what an amazing opening sequence. You have an eye for the beauty and majesty of the land and wildlife and capture it perfectly. I’m moved as I watch and listen. Thanks for sharing your life in Alaska.
Such a beautiful room. I am so jealous! Sit in there with coffee and watch plants grow:)
But then you guys never sit😊
@@marydonofrio8116😂
Have you considered putting your floor plants on a pallet with casters? It would get them up off the floor a bit, so they don't dry out so fast and you could roll them around if you need to rearrange things in the seed room. Love your channel!!!!
Yes great idea!
You inspire me to keep working, I'm 73 and still want to get things done and enjoy the results!
The beginning of this video make me reminisce about all the work you two have put into this new property one project at a time. It is amazing how much you have done to make it a home
I am an experienced grower myself & I have my own set up like you guys. One tip I can offer is 100% be careful of the full spectrum lights with your seedlings or all of your propagation. They can destroy them. It will turn your 30 day crops into seed within days. Fine for seed but great distance or a draw. Endive is one of the best early cold weather crops to grow. It can take -5 Celsius & grow like a champ when it warms up a tad. Double fleece if colder
And my Sunday is complete! Thanks for the video, you two are just incredible, so glad you found each other, never have I seen such perfect soul mates
SPECTACULAR videos of the amazing beauty of Alaska and all its wildlife. Thank you Arielle and Eric for bringing us along on your adventures, projects, daily living and superb cooking!
the way eric dodged that no win question at the end was top tier!
My, I think the seed room is absolutely brilliant, amazing!! Can't wait, I'm So excited to see the plants growing!!
Amazing first part of the video. Thank You for letting me look forward to Spring. Moose is the new protection, graceful giant.
I worked near Kingsville Ontario and drove to work everyday. The region had thousands of acres of green houses. All glowing like your purple shelves. The sky was so cool . All the greenhouse propagation plants.
Hi Greg Good afternoon.I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….🌺🌺🌺
I really like the look of the electrical conduit on the nice wood! Great work you two!
I love watching these. You guys are so precious. I love seeing you guys working together to make all your dreams come true. You are absolutely the epitome of what I imagine “being an Alaskan” is like. Tough, hard working, intelligent and resourceful! And most importantly, you are clearly soul mates 🥰🥰 Love love love watching your videos and seeing what you guys get up to.
Little by little your infrastructure is coming together.
That cookie wall keeps looking better and better.
I started watching 3 hours after this video went live and you already had 10k likes.
and what a great place my darlings to just hangout and plan stuff... the plants in there feeding your inspirations... im really happy you have that additional place... much love xxc
oh my gosh.. thats the best seed room i've ever eaten... aah i mean.. seen.. chuckle chuckle.. xxc
What a wonderful seed room, I know you will get a lot joy having this. I love how Eric can figure out all mechanical issues he is amazing especially with the planner. Dinner looks simply wonderful. Love 💕 y’all!
So after Sunday supper every week, the first thing I do is look to see if you've uploaded a video. YAY! And then to see that magnificent moose. How lucky you are to have them pass through. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful work, I will definitely to see your sprouts and plants growing in the seed room, best of wishes to you two ❤🎉
Of all the incredible things you two do, things garden are my favorite! 😊 Well, OK, the cooking and baking, too.😋😋👍😎🇨🇦
As always, I love to see a new video. ❤️
Your seed room looks awesome! Im betting your garden will be even better than any you've grown prior to this years!
I love your seed room!! And Heavy Duty. Your corner table , or bench sometimes, is the best. A great addition to your homestead. Thanks for letting us hang out too. From Central Oklahoma
I bet you have the most beautiful seed room in at least North America! I'm so happy for you!
I would bet my last dollar on that statement!! 🥰✨👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The winter scenery looks nice. The seed room likes good. Eric is becoming a master builder and mechanic, it's good to stay busy :)
So excited to see you guys have a seed room. You've been very creative starting your seeds in tiny spaces. I'm sure we're going to see spectacular stuff in the garden in the coming years. That cookie wall looks great. I'm inspired to steal your idea.
You guys, 😊 WOW. I just cannot over how amazing the homestead is coming. I love how much progress you both have made since you moved in. Now go play in the snow and enjoy a well-deserved break. Great job, you guys :)
Love the beautiful scenery and the way you capture it all!
Thank you for providing the safety of your farm to this beautiful Moose, birds etc. I love when you go on your hunts for meat during the season of hunting, but I so enjoy just looking at these magnificent animals who feel safe to come around you two.
Just love your photograph at the beginning and all thru the blog. We're a bit older then you so say to each other "I wonder what the kids are doing this week" (Always done with the utmost respect and love) Very much appreciate all of your effort and work that goes into these. Thank you!!
Hi EnA 👋,
Great job , on the electrical, impressive 💪🌶🎉.
Beautiful seed room guys🔥.
JO JO IN VT 💞☃️
I see your local 4 legged inspector showed up! 😂😂😂 Hope you got an outstanding rating!!!!!
I'm thinking hot tub!!! Perfect place for it....soak and watch your plants flourish!!😊
Ariel you should start a work bin for your own castings! They are ridiculously easy. You could keep a bins in the shop or seed room so easily. Fresh castings are a serious game changer! Love you guys!! Such amazing work done on this seed room! Coolest couple on the planet!!
I have seriously looked into it :) Now I just have to convince Eric!
@@SimpleLivingAlaska - oh, it's so easy! I keep two 5 gallon buckets with worms and veg scraps and - most importantly - lots of shredded paper and shredded cardboard. These last two make a world of difference. I keep a bandana elastic-banded over the top and no smells. It couldn't be easier. There are youtube videos which are VERY complicated - for the purpose of clicks. Keeping worms is really really really simple. It does not need to be complicated.
Stunning intro! I felt like I could reach out and touch the moose! You guys never cease to impress me with youre hard work and constant learning
You two are live a life that can't be described as "simple". You are both so exceptional. Really exceptional people.
ERIC & ARIELLE MY FAVORITE ALASKAN OFF GRID TH-cam COUPLE 👍🏼😁👍🏼
That moose was beautiful and pepper was so cute watching. Hope the seed room works well for you. Looking forward to the garden. Now all your starts don't have to be in your house. Great job. Looks amazing
Wow, fabulous video from the serene intro to the electrical, explanation of the planter, and finally cookies. Tremendous work and as always thanks for bringing us along. 🤗👍🏻😉🐈⬛
Hey guys the seed room looks great. I imagine you are starting to realize that all the new comforts you are adding will require more and more power. Please, please do yourselves a favour and think about adding a wind generator to your off grid setup. I'm sure it's about one of the only things that is quite constant up there. Love you guys. Keep it up.
Absolutely love your seed room!!! You have done an amazing job…not surprised at all. You both always do beautiful work! Thanks for taking us along. Looking forward to seeing lots of delicious veggie, fruits and whatever else you grow.
Can't believe it's so warm up there. Houston Texas actually got snow in January. You two did a wonderful job on the sprout room, can't wait to see it working.
Great idea to hit the like button before actually watching the episode. I’m learning a lot just watching the videos. Greetings from Boise, Idaho.
Eric & Ariel you did a great job with the seed room.Well done, may all that you put your hands to prosper well.🥰🌺🌺👏👏👏👏
You two never cease to amaze me. Your new seed room is coming together beautifully. I absolutely love the wood cookie wall. It turned out fantastic. ❤
That bench’s amazing. Perfect for this great seed room. 👍👍
Wow! Look at you two, relaxing in your seed room! Loving this buildout of your infrastructure. Incredible what you have accomplished at this new property. You guys are the best!❤
Looking good guys!!!
The seed room has turned out so good, the best and strongest work bench ever for potting. Eric may get the hot tub someday lol!
You could bank earth up most of the outside wall against the insulation and that will also reduce the floor slab heat loss.
You did very nice work on that project. You will enjoy the greenery in the dead of winter.
I know I’ve said this before but that seed room, especially now with lights, would make a great guest room! 😉😉😉😁😁
I just love how you to work together. Also how you love one another. That is how married couples should be.
I am sitting in a wheelchair on life support and have nothing in common but so enjoy your adventures. Thank you so much for sharing, I wish there were more.

Hugs and blessings to you 🥰🕊🙏
Your photography is amazing, I’m a big fan of any picture of a moose and a cat.
I also hit the like button before watching. You never get a bad video from this wonderful couple ❤❤love you 2 can't wait for summer in Alaska
The seed room is amazing - lucky you!!! I know you’ll be making good use of it for a long time.
I look forward to your videos every week. I’ve watched almost every episode since you began. Can’t wait to see you guys build your green house.
I'm so impressed with Eric's knowledge in so many things. That's so rare for such a young man
Congratulations on the completion of your seed room. It’s a beautiful functional space. I hope it brings you many hours of happiness and joy as you nurture tiny seeds to life Thankyou for sharing
I feel your JOY! Can't wait to see you seed start everything.❤️
Your nature photography is getting “really, really” good l! You guys are doing an awsome job on your show…. Keep up the fine work!
I think their cinematography could be absolutely award winning! It’s stunning. We have been spoiled! I hope they are recognized soon by someone important in that field!
Great job guys thanks , stay safe , keep up the good work, I came across you guys back when you were making your cold cellar and I was looking for ideas and instructions , the truth is I was hoping when you were digging for gravel , you were in the process of maybe making another cold storage environment type room , love the content since , 73’s
Back in the early 70s I was in middle school. Me and another girl took a Shop class instead of Home Economics. We were pioneers! I was using a drill bit router on a piece of wood, bending forward, and my long hair which I did not have tied back, caught in the drill bit! Ouch! Luckily I didn't yank out a chunk of my hair but it hurt terribly. I was so embarrassed. Everytime I see Arielle not having her hair pulled back while using power tools I have flashbacks of being in shop class. 😂
Wow, lucky! When I was 11 and 12 years old at school in New Zealand, in 1970 we as girls were allowed to choose metal work and wood work as 2 options, I loved it.
@deedawson6074 Wonderful! We were the only two girls in the whole school who took shop. It was a first for sure. USA 1972.
Arielle! Please pull your hair back when using power tools!! Safety first!!
Ps…you look so cute with a braid, you don’t even have to wait for power tool day! 🥰✨.Grandma Kime from Indiana..🙋♀️
Just starting… love the Moose with the toothpick! Thank you, thank you, thank you! A breath of fresh air in this crazy mixed up world! 💞Congrats, Eric & Arielle! ❤
Nice job on the room. I have had good success on micro greens and fodder. What's worked for me: 1. Theoretically, you can use any soil if you want but if you do, sterilize it. However soil itself is not necessary. You only need a sterile medium the roots can grab onto and give some vertical space above your watering point. Sometimes, like with wheat, a hole tray above the bottom tray may be enough and all you need if you have enough seeds in there for them to grab onto each other. Lots of things will work better than soil like coco coir, straw mats, sand, lava rocks, etc. steam sterilized toilet paper works. The seeds already have the nutrients necessary to get to the microgreen stage without anything else and just need something to grab on to. However, there is no real "wash" to a micro green harvest so whatever rooting medium you use, make sure it's something you would be ok with accidentally eating some that is left on a stem you accidentally pulled instead of cut. That's also why it's got to be sterile and I am not a fan of actual soil for this, especially potting mixes that could have any solid animal fertilizers in them. I am more a fan of just using coco coir if you are doing less than 4 trays a week. 2. In order to not to oversaturate, I only water using a mist bottle sprayed on top twice a day at first. That's more than enough when keeping it covered and dark using another 10x20 tray, which also helps by simulating soil darkness and soil pressure. 3. On second week to the third week, even though they've sprouted, unless they needed light to germinate it's better to keep another tray on top and keep misting it with a spray bottle twice a day- the pressure of the tray gives the sprouts something to push on for root development while also thickens the stems making them only leggy enough to get to the top of the tray and that makes it easier to harvest later, instead of leafing out right over the roots. 4. Once they've lifted the tray high enough you start seeing them green on the edges from light leakage then it's time to go to lights and leaf out. The pressure from before usually helps quicken germ time, so this is usually the 11 to 18 day mark for me. Each week I put my new trays on my week old trays to add the weight. I've regularly had a tray growth lift up the 4 full trays that were above it without problems. Think as if you were planting carrots with a board on top, same concept. When planting that many together they are not weak or easy to crush. This method also saves light space as only the final leafing stages need the light. For more than half your grow you only need warmth of a heated room, a heat mat, or placement above your lights to reuse their heat. They'd be fine in your generator room or cabin at that stage up through going to the lights. Also, before putting to lights, if the water is not enough or the veg too thick I move to a cup of water a day in the bottom tray under the hole tray. This also gives the roots a humidity target to grow to. 5. Once they are under lights and no longer covered and now with fan ventilation, I do 2 to 4 cups water per day (1 2cup measuring cup worth morning and night, holding back if not just barely wet from the last water). 6. Between day 21 and 35 after they've sprouted their 1st 2 true leaves they're ready to harvest. I usually harvest with a very sharp knife but very sharp scissors can work. 7. If that seed type seems to weaken early or I want the fastest grow I can get, I might use a fertilizer on day 21, or anytime otherwise if kept past 1 month of grow. I use a mix using a cap of 2-0-2 oceanwater per gallon of water, using that liquid mix in the measuring cup instead of just water. 8. If I decide to seed it out, maybe I'll repot into soil before the second month, but have gone 4 months like that without soil. I try not to do that too long for fear of attracting gnats. Better to keep indoor planting materials on a cycle of getting sterilized.
I live in Minnesota and you made the seed starting room of my dreams! Nice work!
I'm not an electrician, but I thought Romex in conduit was not to code. Looking great though! Also, if your feeling lucky, to can make a larger offsets going into the box making it centered between the windows and still using the 1/2" hole. One more thing, add a lower shelf under your bench. You're gonna need it. You already have half the 2x4's there.
Honestly guys, you are examples of how persistent hard work and dedication gets you amazing results. Looks fantastic!
Omgoodness guys, that is a fantastic room, I do believe I have seed room envy. Congrats, you both are so deserving 🌷🇨🇦💖
The new video on a Sunday is the best way to start the week! Thank you for your videos!
A dream come true and it's incredibly beautiful.
Yay!!!!!! I love Sundays! ❤❤❤
Congrats guys. You won’t know yourselves with that seed room. Here’s to a happy growing season ❤
Your Building Skills , since I have been watching you , has Grown so much over the years . Great Job😊 . Love watching you Guys.❤❤😊😊
Friends, the seed room is spectacular! You made a very wise decision with doing a solid insulated roof. The time periods that you really wanted that extra sun, the sun is so low on the horizon that it would not have come through the roof anyway. ❤
Looking forward to seeing how your plants grow. I can't get plants to grow in ideal conditions. You are successful near the arctic circle!
The seed room looks fabulous. Nice job Eric on the bending of the conduit. 4000k is the right call for the lights of course, that’s just my opinion. It looks great.
These videos are a nice breath of fresh air from today’s world. Thanks Eric and Ariel!
Wow what an incredible project to come together! Congratulations guys, can't wait to see the garden this summer
