    It would be nice if all these boxes weren’t so expensive. IMO rolling nest boxes and automatic chicken doors are way to expensive for the average home chicken person

      @andreanease4215 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re handy, you can make both of those with stuff you got lying around. If you’re not handy and don’t have that stuff laying around, maybe chickens aren’t for you.

      Her boxes look like they are made of scrap sheet metal, bent with a brake. Very homemade and catered to her husbands trade and utilizing scrap you already have.

      Pam here, they are not that expensive at all for the 20 hen one? Can’t even buy all the components to make that yourself. And the time, mess and other issues it saves?? It is all relative. If you have the time to scrub eggs, great. I like that you don’t have to deal with the chicken pecking at you…the eggs are all rolled away from them.

      I put my egg box in a separate location away from the coop. They only sleep and poop in the coop. Each morning, I open it for them to go across the run to the egg boxes at the far end. They're only in the nest long enough to do their business and come out. I have no poop in any of the nest or on the eggs.

      TEMU has aluminum auto doors for under $40 USD. We have 2 auto doors that cost us over $100 USD, and then we got a 3rd one from TEMU for around $35 USD. TEMU has a lot of coupons, so you can get even more off if you use the coupon.

    Hello, just my two cents but I would keep my nest box shaded all the time. It doesn’t take long for the sunshine to start baking the eggs especially if you might be gone for a couple of days. Peace to you

    I made roll away nesting boxes for both of my coops and my first coop that the hens are using the boxes, I love it the eggs stay clean and my chickens don't have the chance to eat them. I'm very happy with them. I put the fake grass turf on the bottom

    PREDATOR PROTECTION: They do come with predator locks. We just don't need to use them because we use electric netting, instead.
    I'll update here if we run into issues someday, but we're still loving the rollout nest box so far! hengear.com/?ref=oak_abode

    We constructed our nest boxes out of 5 gallon buckets at a tilt, and cut a whole in the bottom with a trough in the back to collect the eggs. Works great! I have a Wyandotte that goes broody during the summer, and when I notice it, I take her out and give her a 10 minute cool soak in a bath...cools her down and no more broody! Love your videos!

    This video is coming just in time! We have been battling egg eating for a few months. I try to go out several times a day to collect eggs, but almost every day, we lose 1 or 2 eggs. Super frustrating! I have been wanting a next box like the one you featured today 😊.

      We use large garden pots as nesting boxes filled halfway with rice hulls and some sand to keep everything nice and dry and the pot is just large enough for the hens to get in and out from without much effort, works like a charm and no more broken eggs! Never had to clean it either as I just sprinkle some more rice hulls on top.

    If the rollout box is accessible to the outside of the coop, how is it predator-proofed?
    Raccoons, opossums, bears and snakes are a few of my challenges.

    Yes! Eggs piling up tends to give my girls the momma syndrome. Easy to break this. Put the lady in a wire bottom cage for a few days. When she's no longer clicking around, she's usually ready to resume happy hen behavior.

    Pam here, great price for the rollout boxes…and can get sizes for small 20 hen flock up tp what 50 plus! You would pay way more for making boxes up from components.

    I just got the Hen Gear Nest box for 30+ birds, looks like the next size up from yours. I like it but because of my coop the back end is going to hang off the back of my coop. I’m going to have to build a shelf for it to sit on because of the open bottom. We have too many egg eating snakes around here that could get through the open bottom. The shelf should correct it. I look forward to cleaner eggs

    have you tried freeze drying your eggs as a way to preserve them? Obviously need a freeze dryer to do this, but was wondering your thoughts.

    Would you say one of these would be easy to install in place of the regular nest box in your coop design that you sell on etsy? Or would that require major modifications?

    Looks nice, but way too expensive. I only have 8 hens. In the end, I created my DIY roll away nest box by simply lining fake green carpet on paint trays! I saw one other person do this on TH-cam, so it's not my idea. They have the perfect slope and roll away from where they nest. I then block off the first 5 inches or so they can't get to them and collect the eggs from there. So far, it's worked great. My only issue is if we go on vacation, we'll have to ask someone to collect the eggs every day because if we don't, within 2 days the eggs won't have anywhere to roll and will back up to where they nest.

    We just started seeing behavior where our chickens are reaching their necks down into the collection area and pulling them back up and eating them or trying to sit on them. I have your brand of nesting box. Why? They get free ranges most days and have plenty/variety of food treats and available oyster shell. Any advice?

    When you show the footage of how the eggs roll down, I noticed that one egg is stuck behind the flap (hadn’t rolled down). In your experience, does this happen often where the eggs don’t roll all the way down? Cheers

    • @OakAbode
      @OakAbode  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s actually just a “dummy” wood egg which is clipped up there permanently to encourage the hens to use the nest box.

  • @BlueEyedSkinner
    @BlueEyedSkinner ปีที่แล้ว

    Since the bloom takes a few seconds to dry, do you think the eggs rolling affects the bloom at all? Could it affect how long they stay fresh?
    I would think it wouldn't be much worse than where the egg sits when it's laid in a normal nest box.

    Interesting and NOT my experience at all. I always thought..... dirty eggs is a sign of worms. I put food grade DE in my chickens feed.... they never have dirty eggs. Soo.... Not sure where you heard that. I'm pretty sure chickens won't lay in nesting boxes...

    Way too expensive, especially for the unattractive metal aspect of it.
