My dirt dries out perfectly for a dust bath... Guess I'll do a raised coop so they have a spot underneath. I'm thinking planting extra veggie seeds around the fence line of the coop & run would be a great way to supplement their feed and with the fence as a barrier they can totally kill the plant.

Those treats look like Black Soldier Fly larvae. Ugh. Those like to breed in my kitchen compost bin. Thousands of ugly grubs every summer. I got tired of picking them out of my compost (because I hate them so much) that I got five hungry retired-from-an-organic-egg-farm hens to eat them. (I'd had chickens before moving to suburbia). I tossed out a shovel full of compost every day until the grubs were all eaten, then round up the compost scattered on the ground and let it finish composting. More grubs would appear and the ladies would feast again. The retired ladies set about laying again! Then I had to make a decision whether or not I wanted to eat eggs made with those awful grubs. . . . The neighbor got them. He didn't mind at all. Said they were the tastiest eggs he'd eaten since his grandmother raised chickens on their farm in Minnesota. See what a bag of treats in your video can do? Thanks for the memory. And, oh yes, my ladies love to dust bath under my house eaves. There's several spots reserved for them. As for poop - yes, they leave it everywhere, including at my back patio door. (Nice gift, thank you ladies). I use gloves and snatch up individual poops and put them in my compost bins. I'm probably the only person in the country who does this, but I can't stop myself. Don't want to waste such a precious asset.

I was totally gonna do this but someone told me DE is kinda controversial. Worth looking up and deciding based on each person’s values. And especially with deep litter method you can’t have DE nearby or else it’s killing the good bacteria.
DE is probably more controversial for people that don’t understand the different types. Good discussion about it above. Otherwise might fall into the helpful hints category of old wives tales.
@@srslymorgan Some DE is modified and is very toxic, this is the kind used for swimming pools or some such. Thanks for the video. I’ve had my 5 girls for a year in March and they haven’t molted yet. Is that something that happens as they age? When the temps dropped into the single digits this past winter, my girls slept inside my washroom. I let them lay the eggs in the front loader dryer. I obviously put something in there that resembled straw. They loved being inside but enjoyed going out during the day.
Well I am living in hot climate the average temperature is 40 degrees c.. Well I have a hen was broody but the eggs wasn't fertilized... The hen start molting but it's barely eating is that OK??
I'm new to your channel. You give such good information love that about you.. I'm thinking of getting chickens again so this is very helpful thank you .
I asked the woman at Tractor Supply for 9 Olive Egger chicks. I think she gave me Easter Eggers though. They have a chipmunk pattern but now I am wondering if they aren't Brown leghorns. Do you know how I can tell the difference? They are about 10 days old now.
Black soldier fly treats are high in calcium and since the chicks don't start laying eggs until 4 or 5 months old, there's no way for the extra calcium to be released from their bodies. It's possible that it could kill them, depending on how much you treat them. A lower calcium treat, but high in protein, would be meal worm treats. Safer for chicks and since they haven't had soldier flies they'll love them. Remember to give them chick grit so they can digest the meal worms. You can just leave a small bowl of grit in their area. Good luck.
We give them salads they really like it oh and we use the stuff that they can eat from the salad with like carrots and etc, can they have clover because we planted a lot in our backyard and there was this clover patch small one used to be in there and they ate that really fast back to the thing where can they eat clover??
Paint wounds with purple gentian, it heals and disguises the blood. Or... Separate until healed, other chicken TH-cam videos share how to reintroduce. Red colored lights in coop also disguise wounds. Chickenlandia I believe has info, check if attacked chicken is sick. Separate very aggressive chicken if mainly one, reintroduce after a bit. Hopefully nothing here is old wives tale, from memory and what I've learned over the years. Haven't had chickens for a bit.
We have a country house but not there all the time so want to do chickens in our suburban house. What have you heard about swimming pools? Is there a certain to teach your dogs to leave chickens alone? Will they stay on the backyard if have a decent fence or do you need to clip wings?
Thank you for your videos as I am new to owning chickens and have felt overwhelmed with what I need so this has been so helpful. I have two questions 1. If giving the grubterra as a treat do they still need oyster shells? Or do they need oyster shells at all? Also, for the dust bath if they are not free range what is the best substance to put in a bin or whatever for them to do it? Thank you!
Oyster shell is essential for egg production as it provides calcium for eggshells. You can put sand and DE (Diatomaceous Earth) as DE is a natural insect killer and can even be consumed by chickens with no problem. Make sure you add more DE after it rains as moisture ruins the effectiveness of DE.
No you don’t need oyster shells with grub Terra! And i put diatomaceous Earth in a kiddy pool and some sand or dirt! Also just put Diatomaceous Earth (DE) around their coop or run or where ever they are kept its more natural! Most ppl don’t have the space for a dust bath kiddy pool! DE works just fine
The way the economy is going, I dare them to come on my property to take anything from my yard. I purposely bought my house in a non-HOA area. I live in a rural part of my city, so I'm allowed 5 chickens. My friend (neighbor) has chickens and had a rooster, the idiot who live around the corner caused him to get rid of the rooster. He is the same idiot who called a false report about my dogs attacking his dog, which was total BS! I'm going to get a pet rooster who will be my therapy pet, that will keep me calm.

Lol 😂 sounds like something i would do ... i took the goat in the house and let him lay on the couch when he wasn't feeling well 😄
Oyster shells for calcium, great video. Go Big Red! 😊
You done went Johnny Cash on that Rooster named Lilly!! 😆 🤣
Great information in this video keep putting out these videos please!
When can you start feeding them the black larva treats? Our baby chicks are two weeks old. First time chicken owner! Love your channel so much.
We started giving ours black soldier fly larvae in yogurt at maybe 4 weeks.
Good luck.
thank you so much for such an educative video
We give them salads they really like it oh and we use the stuff that they can eat from the salad with like carrots and etc, can they have clover because we planted a lot in our backyard and there was this clover patch small one used to be in there and they ate that really fast back to the thing where can they eat clover??
❤thank you so much you are so kind and this is really helpful I appreciate everything
Whenever you said "I dont want to go down that rabbit hole" i was totally interested XD can you make videos on those topics?
What do you use as bedding? Hemp? Even with the fine pine bedding I’m still not getting something quite right.
How to prevent picking. I do know free ranging helps. I not new to having chickens but never have had a remedy for this problem.
Now how would you get rid if mites it hate them & have a few hens killed by them & I've tried everything to get rid of the mites
Hi dear🥰!!How do you keep flies and lice out of your chicken coop? Thank you so much ♥️!!
Know that molting can be very stressful sometimes for the chicken.
As always great info. Thank you
We have a country house but not there all the time so want to do chickens in our suburban house. What have you heard about swimming pools? Is there a certain to teach your dogs to leave chickens alone? Will they stay on the backyard if have a decent fence or do you need to clip wings?
We used either DE or wood ash in our sand bath area.
In some parts of Australia it’s not illegal to give your chicken kitchen scrapes but it is illegal to find your chicken’s chicken.
Any advice on how to introduce new chickens to the current flock
Canada grocers have a system called loop, where they donate "expired" veggies to farmers to feed to their livestock.
You have a yellowish chicken in this video with black feathers around its neck. I have a bantam that looks the same. Was curious what breed it is. I def love your videos. They’ve been very helpful. Ty. Keep up the great work.
what type of feed do
you use
When will the hens start leaving the coop to go outside?
