Defocus is higher or lower than the precise focus (numberically)

Sorry for the delay here! Defocusing is a higher number if manually focusing with a focal gauge. Essentially taking the beam a bit out of focus for a softer engrave.
If you're controlling the defocus in LightBurn settings, you'll want to ensure a negative figure is entered and it should say "(Out)" next to that number in the Z Offset field.

Hi Heather , great content , clear and to the point , I heard you reference “defocusing” , what is the correct focus of your machine and what is the purpose of the defocus. How many mm are you defocusing , thanks

Hi, Brad! Super sorry for the delayed reply here. Just recently moved from PA to FL so this month has a been a whirlwind!
My machine autofocuses to 6.4mm. For defocusing, I either manually focus to about 8-9mm using the focal gauge or I'll use the AF pin and then set a -2mm Z offset in LB!

Hello! We just got our PiBurn in today! Video very helpful. Could you tell me how we decide the orietation of designs to determine how they will engrave on tumblers? If we want design to go up and down how should we place the design in LB?

Hey! Thanks for watching! The way I like to explain it is that you'll want to envision your cup lying on it's side when you're looking at your design in LB. So, if the opening of the cup is to the right on the rotary, you'll rotate the design to the right so that it's vertical on your screen.

Hi Heather, what power settings do you have? I'm using a Mira 9 90W and at the same settings you're using I'm getting really dark marks which are almost impossible to get off the tumblers.

Hey! I have a 90w Mira 9 (it's a 102w tube). My engrave settings on tumblers is 300/35/300LPI at a -9mm focal height. It varies on some tumbler brands though, which sometimes I have to use 300/40-45. If you have a scrap cup, it helps to run a couple squares or circles side by side at different settings, to see which ones work best for your machine!

@@LoBoDesigns Got it! I'll try these out and see what I get. I'll also be lowering the air pressure as much as possible to make sure I don't introduce any more material into the engraved space. I've been looking at your Procreate course. I'm super interested in designing my own SVGs and I think this is a great way to start.
