    This video is a vintage Raleigh Road Bike restoration. The Raleigh 653 Race which was sold as a frame only in the early 1990's, was made from Reynolds 653 tubing. The Reynolds 653 was a mix of the Reynolds 531c and 753 race tubing.
    When the bike first came in the workshop is was full of rust and unridable. See all in this one video the bicycle stripped, cleaned, restored and polished and then rebuilt like new, before taken out on the open road to test ride! This Raleigh 653 Race is probably one of the best examples we have done on the channel and ended up restored like new. With full retro Shimano Sante group set brand new Rolls saddle and a new coat of paint. The ride really was like riding a brand new bike I could not believe this was a vintage 30 year old Raleigh Bicycle.
    The video also show's Maintenance and Restoration tips and tricks!

    Yes what a truly amazing paint job on that frame! Better than when it came out of the factory. Should last a hundred years now! That groupset is gorgeous too! Love how it's all perfectly colour matched. Great bike. Great video...again! 👍🏻🙂

    Interesting info on 653 framesets. Reynolds have sent me a helpful reply so don't spend any more time on this one on my account. I'll tell you what they said as it's interesting and other folk might appreciate it too. In essence, 653 was invented following feedback from Eddy Merckx that a pure 753 frame was too harsh for certain stages. So Reynolds produced a 653 tubeset which combined 753 stays with 531 main tubes and forks. Not any old 531 though, but an even thinner gauge than usual - just for use in the 653 set. Eddy and other riders were very pleased with the result, which combined a light, ultra-stiff and efficient transmission with a more forgiving and comfy ride.

    653 was actually cold worked main tubes, and a 531c rear triangle and fork. It was about a tenth of a mm thinner than Columbus sl. I own both 653 and 531c bikes. As in the video, manganese molybdenum does rust easily. I've sprayed mine inside the tubes with a rust inhibitor. Seems to help.

    I had one of these from new! .Same paint job.I built mine up with campagnolo chorus parts inc down tube shifters.Raced it in local TTS and the KCA bar competition.in the early 90’s .Also did a couple of 12 hr events on it.Eventually the chain stay snapped.Too much power I suspect 😂 as it was in mint condition and never crashed it.However those 753 tubes are very thin walled 😱

    Any idea why the rear is 753? I was thinking maybe less stiff for more comfort? I don't know.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 753 was hard to work with, using the 753 rear stays made it lighter than a full 531c hence the number between I presume. Thanks for watching and your support

    I still ride my sante equiped bianchi. I got it from a friend who didnt really ride much many years ago. I used it for commuting for almost 10 years and other general transportation duties(when I didnt have to lock it outside). So it is a real workhorse. I also used it for recreational riding and usually one gran fondo a year. I recently changed the rear derailleur, it just was plain worn out. I put on a shimano 105 red arrow friction derailleur from a bike I bought in my teens but most of the bike is still sante.

    I tend to think of Raleigh as being Naff bikes, this one is obviously not. I noticed Cinelli on the bottom bracket? Is it just the BB or a re-badged Cinelli frame? I'm from Nottingham so I should be a bit more respectful to Raleigh. I had an Olympus as a boy, that was 5 speed and really was naff! Guy Kestevan recently bought and reviewed a Raleigh limited reissue bike, did you see his review, he liked it...

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for watching and your support. Cinelli would provide bottom bracket shells to frame builders for the high end range of bikes. Yes I watched his review of the Raleigh and Subbed enjoyed watching him take it through its paces on the open road.

    It's in reasonably good condition but not perfect. I _may_ go down this route that you have done.

    I looked it up. 653 is just 753 without the heat treating. I would assume that it would just make it less stiff and would be listed for a less maximum racing weight.
    A little like my 28 year old Bianchi. It was made with a TSX UL tubeset, and had a max racing weight of 180 pounds (82kg). There also was a available a ELOS tubeset with a max racing weight of 160 pounds (73kg). Racing weight does not mean riding weight. I can still have fun on it, but the bike feels "funny" taking a 90 degree corner at 30 mph (50kph)
    Apparently, I have become "Gravity Challenged".

    I love how the bars from the 90's allow you to place your brake levers down where you have them. I still have some Shimano 7401 and 7402 (with return spring) brake only levers. I still have a rear pickup Cateye ASTRALE 8 bike computer that I put on all of my bikes. (it has to be over 15 years old, and still works great) I even have a spare one that I got dirt cheap, on a close out.
    I love the look of Rolls saddles, but everyone I've had (3) has ended up with broken rails after 4 years. PS I still have a Shimano 600 crankset in my parts bin, along with 8 speed downtube levers, and rear derailleur.
    Is that Benoto bike ribbon on the bars? That is an 80's bar tape. Back in the mid 80's, I raced on a white Cannondale with a white S.I. Turbo, with 7 speed blocks.

    Hey superbe choice to put sante on this bike I was thinking, "What kind of groupset belongs with this unusual pearlescent/pastel frameset" and Sante is EXACTLY the correct answer! Great job! Also it's great to see those mismatched ergo bars and black stem replaced with traditional bars and silver 3TTT stem ...

    Whoever purchases this bike will have an absolute classic. Set up as such, it could go 20 years just like that and only gain in vintage value and collectibility.
    In the 80's and 90's I worked in a Toronto bike store. This bike would have been considered leading edge. Many of our customers were aesthetically motivated and I'm sure there are similar bikes still proudly owned and ridden in Toronto by somewhat aged cyclists!

    I still find this era of bikes the most exciting. Couple years ago I got a 1988 Specialized Allez at a tag sale. I must say one has to marvel and quality of tubing mixed with serviceability, adjustability and overall durability. Some stuff like having a standardized 31.8 (with open face plate on stem) bar stem combo or duel bolt seat posts (like a Thomson), or obliviously the safely of duel control levers vs down tube shifters. A lot of the modern stuff that seen an improvement has just made bike more disposable, temperamental and more costly and this coming from someone who uses most modern stuff (one-by, carbon forks, tubeless, disc-brakes etc)

    The show is a great watch and very informative. I had just bought a vintage Raleigh Grand Prix and I’ve narrowed the time of its assembly between 1968-72. There are some conflicting info on the bike to be exact but the main thing I can’t find is a list of the original hardware/parts assembled for those years so I can restore it as close to original as possible. If you have anything that I can use that would be great.

    Well done Andy the bike turned out really, really amazing. What made you decide on the Shimano Sante groupset over a Campagnolo groupset? Considering the bike had some Campy parts on it. I would of personally gone with a Campagnolo groupset. But that’s just me though. All the best from Canada. John.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John thanks for watching and your support. The bike had a mix of the Shimano 600 Tri and Campagnolo. The frame was sold as a frame only which gave me free movement on what should be on there. The Sante Groupset is had as a kid and knew the colour scheme was perfect for it regarding the matching white and grey/silver. I was considering transforming it in to the Castorama colours which would of definitely meant going down the Campagnolo route. Thanks again all the best

    Hi andy can i ask how long does it take you to fully restore a bike ? I have bought a legnano it arrives on Tuesday from italy 😁. It looks a-bit tatty ,and it as tubular rims , i have no experience of tubular would you change them or stick with them

    • @BikeItUK

      Hi how long is a piece of string, they honestly all vary. Unforeseen problems, locating parts etc on average I say approx a month but be mindful this can go extend. Ref Tubular tyres if they are original the is be tempted to keep them. But if this is going to be a daily ride then maybe clinchers 🤔🚲

    Reynolds 653 was not 531 main tubes - they were cold-worked and butted to the same dimensions as 753, making them a unique '653' tube. This is evidenced by countless Reynolds adverts and brochures, that show the tube thicknesses .
    It seems that one Reynolds employee got confused and said it was 531 main tubes with 753 rear triangle (the rear end is 753), and that has spread via the internet, becoming a well-believed myth.
    The other myth is that Eddy Merckx had something to do with 653's creation, stating that 753 was too stiff. Firstly, he was long-retired before 653 came out, and secondly, as everyone should know, all steel has the same stiffness, regardless of strength. So, 753 being thinner-walled, is less stiff than 531.
    (Oh, and that rear mech is Athena, not Chorus!)

    Absolutely gorgeous bike - but 653 tubing was not the 'top of the range' Raleigh frameset. That honour was reserved for frames made in 753 tubing - which were extremely light and usually reserved for professional teams during the 1990's. [My bother actually bought one from a pro mechanic we knew who worked for the Raleigh-Banana team].

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and the support, yes you are correct Raleigh had the 753 team frames made for them, however the 653 Race frameset was the top of the range frame only available to the general public in the brochure. Thanks again and sounds like he had a great bike.

    • @thesoultwins72
      @thesoultwins72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BikeItUK ......Hi Andy - and many thanks for your quick reply! However, and to repeat - for all their 'top-end' bikes Raleigh used 753 tubing [although they later introduced 653 tubing - which sat between 753 and 531 tubing]. They also used 531 tubing [531P = Professional] a lighter, thinner-walled variant as well as 531C [C = Competition] but these frame-sets were positioned below 753 in the range.
      As I mentioned, my brother actually bought a Raleigh-Banana 'team issue' bike from one of the team mechanics [who we knew quite well] in 1990 - it was made from 753 tubing and very light for that time. But it had been raced a lot so was badly scratched and 'dinged'. In fact, it had clearly been in a very bad crash at some point as the back and front wheels were out of alignment. So when you rode behind it, the bike had a 'crabbing' effect as it went down the road!
      My brother had the frame re-sprayed and regularly rode it for a number of years - but it always looked strange due to the misalignment in the wheels!
