    Do you use global phase or do you "restart" the phase with every bass hit? I imagine global phase would allow the echos in the club to accumulate better while restarted phase could create phase cancellations (between echo and new bass hits). Do you have any experience on this?
    Thank you for your content and shared knowledge btw!

    I have a topic I would like your opinion on. Recently I participated in a production competition at a conference room (so not a club sound system), and even though I used a kick & rumble sample straight of a techno mastered track, when I played out in the monitors it was completely suffocated and powerless. My initial thought was that the monitors could not reproduce such a low end. However, when tracks from softer edm genres like house, or uk garage, with shorter kicks, were played, it could reproduce fine.
    A tutor from that production school came to me at that point, looked at my low end, and said that the problem was that there was little to no dynamic range in it, so the speakers membrane is not pumping enough to provide that punch! To be honest, I’ve never mixed my low end group in a way that I care about it’s dynamic range. Quite the opposite, I would sacrifice dynamic range for more punch, power, and perceived volume (since I am producing industrial techno).
    What's your take on the above?

    hey Alice great videos I have a few questions for the dynamics: you say normalize the kick to 0 db and up everything but you just rise up the kick in the video. Also the track referred as "your track" in this video is -6db pre master or 0 db pre master? the "push 1-2 db on the pro L is made on what track? master or low end only?

    Isn't the phase already altered by the EQ before checking? Meaning you have altered what you metered. Unless the EQ works in linear phase mode.

    • @EG_John
      @EG_John 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The essence is about the phasing of oscillators in a bass synthesizer. The equalizer on the master channel cannot affect the phasing between two oscillators on a separate bass channel in any way.

  • @eddieschneider1947
    @eddieschneider1947 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Have you tried other voices? Or is this the only one you have tried?

  • @RotoGluOn
    @RotoGluOn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well, nice tips but there are tools that makes the phase alignment very easy :
    - I use Oszillos Mega Scope on my kick and bass tracks
    - I use PHA-979 on the tracks I want to offset the phase.
    It's pretty easy and a visual way to get almost perfect phase alignment.
    I also try to aim at -14 dB LUFS on the master track since most of my tracks will end up on TH-cam or streaming platforms so you can't master à -10 dB so I mix my tracks are at a lower volume (-16/-21 etc.)
    Nice video as usual though, I love your content and the music you produce.

    • @dooshnukem32
      @dooshnukem32 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fyi - you actually don't have to master at lower LUFS for streaming services. All they do if your track is louder than their target LUFS value is simply turn it down. No limiting, no compression, no eq or any other change to the song - just volume. Actually, in some cases, being _below_ their targets can end up having negative impacts on a track.
      There's an article from Izotope ("How to Master for Streaming Platforms") that breaks it down pretty well, but if you search, there are plenty of other articles about the subject. Everyone has different mastering needs, so it's worth checking a few others for any tips that fit your needs/preferences specifically.

    • @tale5music
      @tale5music 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Master your shit at higher LUFS and it'll be louder, even though platforms will turn it down the dynamics are different and your track WILL be louder when mastered higher, and you should.

    • @RotoGluOn
      @RotoGluOn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tale5music Your sound will be squashed if you let TH-cam lower the volume, all your dynamics will be lost. I know that for a fact and the difference is really audible. Oh and by the way, the sound you mastered at -14 dB LUFS will sound louder than the one you mastered at -5 dB once TH-cam has processed it.

    • @tale5music
      @tale5music 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RotoGluOn you're on a techno channel, squash is our middle name. Anyways, why should I believe you over the enormous amount of people saying the exact opposite AND bringing evidence, and showing real world examples of popular songs mastered to much higher than -14? There has to be a balance for sure, too much and your dynamic range is completely gone, but not enough (-14) and you're way under your competition, which in these days isn't a good thing either with EDM.

    • @dooshnukem32
      @dooshnukem32 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RotoGluOn That's not true, necessarily. More often than not, a song mastered louder than another will still sound louder after volume compensation (normalization) on streaming services.
      I regularly master tracks around -7 LUFS integrated with 10-12 dB of dynamic range. That doesn't just happen by slapping a limiter on the track and cranking it to 11, which just gives that lifeless, crushed sound you described. It takes being mindful of my arrangements and sound selections, careful mixing and mastering choices, and a healthy dose of saturation. But you can get loud af and bring all the dynamics with you, promise.
