A true tragedy to lose such a gifted talent in the prime of his life. He should still be recording today! I don't think we would have lost John Deacon so soon if Freddie was still performing. What a terrific terribly sad thing to lose both of them. John just couldn't continue playing after losing his friend. Deacy has always been my favorite Queen member.

Love this, it is a demo from the Freddie Mercury rarities box set, here Freddie is covering both parts, his own and Montserrats parts. Freddie did this because he wanted the song to be as complete as possible when he presented it to Montserrat as she was incredibly busy to do all the recordings. The finished version of these songs are a must to listen to. Because Freddie was just Freddie he could cover both parts of this song. The demo reels of this album is a joy, Freddie and Montsy just having fun at Freddie's house sitting around his piano.
Yes you got it right! Both songs were all Freddie (even the high parts of the first song). He recorded these demos to show Montserrat what he was planning. She had a very tight schedule and close to no time at all, because she has been booked years in advance, when she started the project with Freddie. So he prepared everything to show her, and she didn't need much time to add her thoughts, and at last her voice. On the final record the two songs "Guide Me Home/ How Can I Go On" flow into another, like here on the demos. They kind of belong together. Maybe you want to listen once to "Guide me Home" with Montserrat. It' also beautiful. I like both versions. I love the recordings with Montserrat, and also Freddie on his own.
Oh, I just love this, listen to it every night. It is Mike Moran who plays piano on the album, in both versions. If you go to order the CD on eBay or something, just be aware that there are two different versions. The first one was rather bare bones, with the voices of Freddie & Montserrat, piano, synthesizers, drum machines, a small string section, & a few other singers on one song, & John Deacon on bass for one song, How Can I Go On. Mike offered to score it for orchestra, but Freddie said no, he was happy with it the way it was. It was all recorded in studios, in 1987, & released in 1988. It was during the time of recording that Freddie got the HIV diagnosis. He told Montserrat about it, & almost no one else, which goes to show how he trusted her to keep his confidence. One critic called it the most bizarre album of the year. Then for the 25th anniversary, in 2012, a decision was made to redo the whole thing with a full orchestra. The vocals were isolated, & set to the orchestrations, played by the FILMharmonic Orchestra, Prague. They got rid of the synth, mostly, kept John on this song, & replaced the drum machine, again on this song, with Roger Taylor's son, Rufus Tiger Taylor on drums. The orchestral work is gorgeous, & I especially love the oboe & bassoon parts! (I played bassoon in high school band.) Exercises In Free Love was not on the first one, but is included on the second one. I have both, & like them both, for different reasons.

while i listened to "its a kind of magic" i just had to listen to this. i cannot pick a favorite. o ok i listened to it 2 times. you mention he is very good on piano i watch a voice teacher react to freddie & he said it is not easy to play & sing as freddie does. o k i have to eat this time, i am leaving, do not bet on it. thanks sassy
