@@Meatle. the songs of the beatles have very much variation and they always experimented with different instruments, but their songs weren't really hard if you look at the chords they used, those were very basic. They were also in the same genre a lot. Queen did a way better job of going into other keys and had very much variation in musical genres, but they would have the same instruments most of the time; guitar, bass, drums and ocassionaly a piano or synth. So both bands were really great at different elements of music.
If you haven't listened to "Death on Two Legs" or "March Of The Black Queen" please do so. Underrated gems. (Edit: Also Seaside rendezvous, the Prophets song, All Dead All Dead, Don't try Suicide and Sheer Heart Attack are really fun songs to listen to.)
I assumed this was going to be about Queen II - easily one of my favorite Queen albums. Brian's guitar playing and Freddie's vocals are killer on this album.
The only thing I dislike about Queen is that their catalog is so wide and each album so distinctive, that I've never been able to get bored of them and this has probably prevented me from listening to other great bands! You could probably do a video like this one with at least 10 other incredible songs from this geniuses.
March of the Black Queen is the original Bohemian Rhapsody! Ok I'm totally not neutral but I will say the whole "Queen II" album is the most underrated Queen album of all time. And especially the second side which is the "Freddie side" which works for me like a single piece especially the succession of Ogre Battle > The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke > Nevermore which is mind-blowing when you think it has been done in 1974 with limited time in studio and no computer... It's one of the craziest (in a good way) harmonic and melodic thing I've ever heard. And each time I hear it (first time I was13 I'm 42 now) I still wonder : How did they achieve such perfection? Because each time I listen to this record, I discover something new...
exactly! Innuendo song stands in this line! typicall Freddies masterpiece. here he brings his education in classical music to rock. song is 90% written by Freddie.
I highly suggest going in depth on “The Prophets Song.” It’s Brian May’s Bohemian Rhapsody and it’s unfortunate that it gets lost in the shuffle compared to Queen’s more popular songs. It’s amazing that for any other group Prophets Song would be their magnum opus, but Queen has like 20 more to come!
Not really - Bohemian Rhapsody's oper section is playful and shapeshifting. The Prophet's Song just repeats the same gimmick for a way too long time, to the degree that the guitars crashing in feel like a relief, unlike BR which makes one want revisit the a cappella part over and over again.
Herr Schmidt I’m not saying Prophets Song is totally on the level of BR. I’m just saying it’s one of Brian’s most interesting creations which i believe is underrated in the grand scheme of Queen’s discography. And I personally think Freddie’s echoing harmonies are quite haunting and beautiful rather than a gimmick. But that’s just my personal opinion
Since you mentioned the Kashmir influence, in Freddie's tribute concert Robert Plant played this song with the rest of Queen and threw in a few lines from Kashmir... perfect moment.
Yes, it was the perfect moment. Robert Plant was singing Inuendo at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and he hadn't learned all the lyrics to Inuendo, so he threw in some Kashmir lyrics to make up for it - and they were amazing - way better than the lyrics he was trying to read off the paper on the floor. LOL Thanks for reminding me of that. 🙃 I'd been listening to so much Queen n I'd never heard Kashmir, so I looked it up. What a great (and heavy) song!
So if Bohemian Rhapsody was Freddie's Beethoven's 5th, the strongest and most iconic work, Innuendo was his Beethoven's 9th, the swan song of his brilliance, with a help from his bandmates and friends (Howe).
Innuendo is easily1 of queens worst songs. Amazing craftsman ship and lyrical/ sonic prowess aside. In the grander scheme of queens career and being a good song to throw on, the song fails miserably. The song sports a lot of great ideas all held back by 1 thing... the original idea was terrible. To make a song like that... clouded in synths that would soon sound dated and to have it build around more circus sounding music instead of operatic... these were some of its downfalls. The song just sounds like a giant mess whereas bohemian sounds like everything perfectly falls together. Bohemian was built off of an amazing idea... to bring the opera to rock and roll, make a multi part song (something only played around with by bands like the Beatles and yes and king crimson.... but never really used in a more pop oriented in your face way) that was worthy of its parts, to make a triumphant stage worthy tragedy unfold in front of the audiences eyes... bohemian was built on all of these amazing ideas while innuendo was built on nothing "let's rip off led zeppelin, let's try and repeat the succsess of bohemian rhapsody ect. My brother passed away in 2008. I have him to thank for really turning me on to Queen. He may be gone but the music remains. I can't hear Queen without thinking of him.
I saw the video in my notifications and was expecting March of The Black Queen. But I must say I am pleasantly surprised to see a video about Innuendo!
It's interesting to hear Pop/Rock songs being broken down like this, so much more interesting than the "reviews" you see in Newspapers etc. which rarely deal with musical content. I'm a particular fan of "Now I'm Here" which, for me, showed a band approaching the peak of what they were to capable of. Unusual key changes, canon/imitation, unusual structure, given that there's no actual chorus and a savvy nod to Chuck Berry, both in the guitar solos and the cheeky "go, go, go, little Queeny!" near the end.....I never tire of listening to it! ;O)
Innuendo was almost their final album, There was "Made in Heaven" that was released in 1995. It included 3 songs Freddie recorded 6 months before he died. "Mother Love" was the final song he recorded in May of 1991. Brian May had to sing the last verse because Freddie was too ill to continue at that point.
It's important to remember that Mr. Taylor and Mr. May taking lead vocals on Queen songs wasn't unheard of on the 70s Queen albums. I miss that a little on the later albums. The circumstances on Made In Heaven were tragic, and that Mr. Mercury's health deteiorated so much that he couldn't finish his own song is hard to hear. However, if he hadn't been the sole vocalist for such a long time, then perhaps there would have been more stomach within the band to create more Queen albums after he passed away...
I'd throw "Cool Cat" into the ring for the most underrated piece. It falls into the time between Queen being good rock and Queen being good pop and is lost on an entirely insignificant album, which is entirely overshadowed by one of their greatest singles.
This is my No. 1 Queen song of all-time, even higher than Bohemian Rhapsody in my personal list! From Freddie's powerful and spine-chilling vocals to the exotic flamenco solo by Steve Howe, the ethereal choral vocals at the bridge and the hard-hitting drums, this song is a highly underrated masterpiece in every way!
I know it's more rock than opera, but another favorite of mine is "It's Late" from News of the world. I love all of Queens music. Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie, was fantastic.
I really thought the video would be about the medley on Queen II side B ("Ogre Battle", "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke", and "Nevermore"). But yeah, "Innuendo" is awesome too!

I KNEW IT! i knew it would be innuendo, very under rated album and song, or.. maybe its a bit to much of a reminder that these were Freddie's last words (so to speak). But its an AMAZING album and ONE HELL of a powerful song.
True, those are his last recorded songs, but i meant the last album released while still alive, he knew that the next album would be more than likely after his unfortunate demise.
Innuendo is pretty good but not that Underrated, I was honestly hoping this would be another Night at the Oprea song called the prophets song if you haven’t heard it listen to it.
A thousand times YES! Innuendo is my favorite Queen song by far and I always feel it never really gets the recognition it deserves. More people need to be made aware of how amazing this song is, so thank you for putting it in the spotlight.
You forgot to mention that the music video for innuendo is also incredible. The claymation part of it is out of this world. In my opinion innuendo it’s far more interesting than Bohemian Rhapsody and I’ve always liked it a lot more.
Well said and well done! This album brings back a lot of mixed emotion memories for me. At first listen, I could tell something wasn't quite right in Queen's world; It also evoked a lot of strong emotions for me as I was in a bad marriage. It never stopped me from listening to the album, as there were so many amazing elements. The way that Queen used the music studio as an instrument was so amazing. Not many recordings had this level of fidelity or innovation. This inspired me to try to be a better musician and recordist. Thank you for bringing this album to a new group of listeners; it has never received the recognition it deserves.
Yeah... You already said what i was thinking. A day at the races always is overlooked along side of night at opera and news of the world. The two albums always lost is the inbetweeners. Day at races and my opinion the best queen album... Jazz. Innuendo is pretty awesome. So is made in heaven for what it is
@Nothing is Real - Millionaire Waltz is perfection. The complex bass accompaniment with the simple piano chords that form the intro is stunning. The tempo changes, waltz played on a guitar, Freddie's vocal modulations from growling rock to breathy softness....all of it!
@@robingentleman2574 I would disagree. Hammer to Fall, Save Me, Innuendo, Scandal, Made In Heaven, Let Me Live, The Show Must Go On, Miracle, It's a Hard Life are all songs I would consider as on par with 1970s Queen.
I think your Merchandise is Something Very Special and brilliant. It's Not just another T-Shirt with a Logo, it's Something unique and i Hope more Posters will follow
Great… Hot Space doesn't much love. It's good to hear that they killed it live. Actually, I like that album. Dancer and Put Out The Fire are my favourites.
Queen doesn’t have only Bohemian Rhapsody and Innuendo with these characteristics. Also The March Of The Black Queen (Queen II) and The Prophet’s Song (A Night At The Opera) are remarkable epic songs on band’s career. Truly hidden gems that deserve other videos just for them.
Queen is my all time favourite band. When people ask me which is my favourite song by them, I answer Innuendo. This video explains perfectly why. Fantastic job!
Thank you for that! Innuendo is by far my favorite song of theirs. When I saw the title I was certain, and finally correct. An incredible composition. Probably their greatest
Thank you so much for articulating why I love this song so much, and why it's my favorite Queen song. I think I've listened to Innuendo far more than any of their other songs.
I was positive the other "Operatic Masterpiece" was going to be March of the Black Queen. I've always felt that it was "Bohemian Rhapsody before Bohemian Rhapsody." All of Queen II is like a hidden gem.
Thanks for this. I really like queen but never thought much of this song. You really opened it up for me and I see it in a different way now. Great video.
i was expecting march of the black queen as the "other than bohemian rhapsody" operatic masterpiece, I never really saw innuendo as a symphony or rhapsody great video as always bro
innuendo is a masterpiece, it's awesome. I love it, I don't know why it isn't as famous as bohemian, it's like a million times better than bohemian. it would be my favorite queen song if it wasn't for "you don't fool me", for me that's the best queen song ever, it would be cool if you make a video about it. the riff is hipnotic, the atmosphere is fascinating, and the guitar solo is one of brian's best solos ever.
I love this song, and I have loved Queen ever since I was a child. I feel like one reason why it seems to pale in comparison with Bohemian Rhapsody, or even Led Zeppelin's Kashmir (which the opening and closing verses are reminiscent of), is that when Queen began, they were sonic innovators. In 1990/91, when Innuendo was recorded, technology allowed (imo) bands inspired by Queen like Guns n' Roses to perform similar magic in production, along with lots of other groups. Even Def Leppard, who weren't in the same league as Queen in any way, could, thanks to Mutt Lange, claim Hysteria was a chunky, satisfyingly aggressive rock album, with Queen-style harmonies to the fore. In other words, the progress of studio technology had flattened the playing field. The other is that Bohemian Rhapsody took a very personal Mercury lyric (he may or may not have been channelling a persona or character when writing - it's unlikely he was literally writing about his own life) and built around it, whereas Innuendo started with the musical excellence of May, Taylor and Deacon, and added lyrics later. The result is a song that tries to come across as universal, but does not hit home as hard as the gut-wrenching lyrics of BR - at least until the final verse, which is undoubtedly Freddie singing about his own wish to live only for the moment, as that was all he had. I find Innuendo the album a hard listen - I don't think it's not as rounded an album experience as The Miracle or A Kind of Magic, probably in great part due to the almost unbearably sad circumstances the band were working through. There is also the subtext of knowing, listening to Freddie's voice - as on-the-button as it always is - that one of your heroes is recording this knowing he is about to die. That, alone, makes the album a real lump-in-the-throat listen, unlike The Who's Who Are You album, for example, where they played knowing Keith Moon was making himself very ill, but unaware of exactly what would happen, and so there is more joy, and less foreboding, in the sound.
Sure, every verse might as well be loaded with death. Headlong, I Can't Live With You. I got the impression that Mr. Mercury was singing love songs to the virus itself, and it was hard to shake.
INNUENDO!! I absolutely LOVE this song! I saw the title and I really hoped it would be about this song. The whole song takes me back to when I was 12-13 years old. This song, I dare to see, would be a breaking point in my musical development. I did not realize music could be THIS. Thank you so much on doing yet another great video on it. Pumping the song through my stereo any moment now.
Brain May is as obviously influenced by Page as Joe Perry. Disnt realize Merc was a Zep fan, but I geuss if he had no interest in rock he wouldnt have wanted to be in the band in the first place.
Thank you! Finally someone talks about Innuendo I LOVE this song. I always get chills whenever I listen to this as well as the show must go on, which makes me cry.
May starts, which then allows the song to take it up one notch by allowing Mercury to take over. Afterwards May just has single lines, which gives a nuance to the song and in a way anchors Mercury to keep him from getting too theatrical. May's voice is very much in tune, but unlike his guitar, it does not add character. Even a worse voice (and mine is certainly worse) would have more edge. '39 must be the most skippable song on A Night At The Opera. But, well, fanboys... if you liked music more than a specific band, it would open up whole worlds to you.
Thank you for this very well done video about an epic song. The album came out the year I moved to New York City for a life-changing job and met my wife. I'll never forget hearing the first power chord over the sound system in a Brooklyn music store. I knew it was Brian immediately! My eyes welled up and I bought the CD right there.
Thanks - I'm a big Queen fan but strangely I had never heard or heard-of this track before. And all these years later I still desperately miss Freddie. It's a testament to the strength of the band that they have gone on and even thrived.
Yeah, Innuendo (the song) was at the time it was released often spoken of as the spiritual successor of Bohemian Rhapsody. Personally I think there's another song that also operatic in nature but it's a lesser known song and it actually predates Bohemian Rhapsody. The song is March of the Black Queen from the album Queen II, I always consider that song the spiritual predecessor of Bohemian Rhapsody.
To be honest - I love all Queen songs and I cry every time I listen to The Show Must Go On - but Innuendo is something else , it´s my favourite and I always have goosebumps listening to it, even after years.
You know I need to give the Innuendo song another proper listen. I always enjoyed the more stadium rock stuff like "the show must go on" at the time (I was 12) and just sorta ignored Innuendo. Awesome video.
Thank you polyphonic! I remember when I first heard this song as a kid an I was absolutely blown away by it's sound, I've always thought this song was criminally underrepresented and underappreciated
booneh it really does show how amazing there are when they have so many to choose from. Millionaire Waltz, March of the Black Queen, Innuendo, the Prophet. What other band has that many?
It shows how brilliant this band is when their "other" Operatic Masterpiece could be one of ten songs

Could you do a video on Brian May I think a lot of people overlook how great of a guitarist he really was
@@Billy219
If you really dislike post-1930s music what are you doing watching a video like this?
*"IS"
Innuendo is definitely an amazing piece of musical work, a pocket symphony as Brian Wilson would say
Finally someone else who is as passionate about queen as I am. You earned a sub
Thank you for bringing this album to a new group of listeners; it has never received the recognition it deserves.
innuendo is a masterpiece, the whole album deserves more recognition. it might just be my favorite album.
Don't forget "The White Queen (as it began)" and or course "March of the Black Queen"
The Highlander theme is one of their best songs! Super dynamic.
GREAT KING RAT IS SO UNDERATTED ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY! SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE IT SOME LOVE!?!?
Especially the recording on “At the Beeb”
"Jesus" rocks too… that primal, first album stuff when every door was open and they could have gone anywhere they wanted...
innuendo is SUCH A GENIUS SONG
I bought the cassette back in 96.
"I'm Going Slightly Mad', always giving me the chills from the first time I played it, right until this present day.
It's finally happened…
The Millionaire Waltz?
Yeah... You already said what i was thinking. A day at the races always is overlooked along side of night at opera and news of the world. The two albums always lost is the inbetweeners. Day at races and my opinion the best queen album... Jazz. Innuendo is pretty awesome. So is made in heaven for what it is
I like the songs in ADATR than ANATO
@Nothing is Real - Millionaire Waltz is perfection. The complex bass accompaniment with the simple piano chords that form the intro is stunning. The tempo changes, waltz played on a guitar, Freddie's vocal modulations from growling rock to breathy softness....all of it!
that is the definitive "other Bohemian Rhapsody" and much as I love Queen, nothing in the 80s or beyond came close to their brilliance in the 70s
@@robingentleman2574 I would disagree. Hammer to Fall, Save Me, Innuendo, Scandal, Made In Heaven, Let Me Live, The Show Must Go On, Miracle, It's a Hard Life are all songs I would consider as on par with 1970s Queen.
March Of The Black Queen was their other true masterpiece. It was so complex that they never played it live. Innuendo is good though.
They sang that song for 4 years.
"Freddy was always positive..."
probably a better way to phrase that.
Ouch.
2nd video on Queen. Amazing.
Amazing, but not enough... he should probably fix this problem :P
I think your Merchandise is Something Very Special and brilliant. It's Not just another T-Shirt with a Logo, it's Something unique and i Hope more Posters will follow
Queen had so many brilliant songs that go so unappreciated.
Seconded. My Melancholy Blues shpuld be played at the end of every party as people start going home.
Totally agree. I've always known this to be a masterpiece.
100% epic track. I request it all the time on classic rock radio to no avail of course. Another epic song is Was it All Worth It from The Miracle.
I can’t get enough of Queen. Innuendo is one of my favorite albums of all time
the whole second side of Queen II (from Ogre Battle through) is Abby Road level brilliance.
Hot Space tour Denver Colorado, 14th row. With Freddie! Best concert I ever saw, and I've see a ton.
Holy crap. 2 of my favourite artists on one song. Steve Howe and queen
Dude, spot on!!! How is Innuendo not a classic? Arguably Queens best song, most indicative of the band.
I would have guessed "Somebody to Love" but I'm curious about this song that I've never heard of. keep up the great work.
one of the best channels on youtube for sure
Dammit! I thought you were going to do The Prophet's Song.
I fuckin love that song!
I did as well!
Imagine if it wasn't on the same album as Bohemian Rhapsody! I thought this vid was going to be March of the black queen though.
I thought so too! That is a GREAT song! I love the vocal Cannon and May's guitar work throughout...
oh thought you were gonna talk about march of the black queen.. but innuendo is a killer too
Innuendo is my fav Queen track. Love this
Thank you for that! Innuendo is by far my favorite song of theirs. When I saw the title I was certain, and finally correct. An incredible composition. Probably their greatest
I knew it before I watched it, this song is massive, it deserved an analysis on its own. Thanks for the great work!
I bought this CD brand new in 1991 as a 16 year old kid and immediately picked Innuendo as the best! Great video! Thank you for what you do!
One of my absolute favorites. Innuendo is EPIC
Queen is in my top 2 favorite bands, and Yes in my top 5. Happy to see them "merge" here.
i was expecting march of the black queen as the "other than bohemian rhapsody" operatic masterpiece, I never really saw innuendo as a symphony or rhapsody great video as always bro
I love how the title says other... when there are plenty of Queen operatic masterpieces lol
innuendo is a masterpiece, it's awesome.
"Other" as if there are only a couple. That said, nice video. I love the Innuendo album!
Innuendo has and always will be one of my favorite songs. Thanks for making this song! I love it
I love this song, and I have loved Queen ever since I was a child.
SOOOOOOOO AGREE WITH YOU. Thanks for this well-deserved tribute to a true piece of art.
My favorite Queen song is “Hammer to fall”. The studio version is fantastic but the Live Aid performance is stunning. Check it out if you haven’t.
A great and detailed analysis! Kudos to you, Polyphonic!
I've always felt Innuendo was very underappreciated. So glad you feel the same way as I do.
MARCH OF THE BLACK QUEEN!!! The best operatic masterpiece by Queen, in my opinion.
Queen has so many underrated epic masterpieces, Prophets song, March of the Black Queen, White Queen, Father to Son, White Man, and so much more
It's dark vibes make it feel like Queen turned Led Zeppelin. From Queen i tend to expect more grand and absurd work. Still a great piece of music.
Yes. Freddie Mercury was a Led Zeppelin fan
MrJuanBuzz to be honest, in the early 70’s- Who wasn’t?
damn I must sound cocky, has Jimmy Page as my profile picture is my username is J. page
Zeppelin’s pretty positive too though.
In fact, Roger Taylor once said that he was inspired by led Zeppelin's Khasmir to play the beat of innuendo.
Who Wants to Live Forever is the other, other great Symphony.
Jason Cromwell My 2nd Favorite Song From them. this being my 1st
Which also accomplished the wonder of making May's voice sound less boring.
@@Schmidtelpunkt fuck you! May's voice is far far far from boring. You on the other hand, will sound like a dying strangled cat, in comparison.
I didn't actually realise Dr. May sings on that track. Apparently it's a shared lead vocal.… This idea that his voice is boring is just jive...
Really love Innuendo, but March of the Black Queen may always be my favorite Queen song. Thanks for mentioning Steve Howe.
Before I begin the video am going to guess it's the March of the black queen
I thought the same
Somebody to Love was my guess
I thought so as well
Or Liar, or Great King Rat or My Fairy King... the 1st Queen album is dope and has some great prog rock moments
Viejotrueno thanks I'll check it out
Thank you for this very well done video about an epic song. The album came out the year I moved to New York City for a life-changing job and met my wife. I'll never forget hearing the first power chord over the sound system in a Brooklyn music store. I knew it was Brian immediately! My eyes welled up and I bought the CD right there.
I always thought March of the Black Queen was a better song than BR. The official fan club also voted it the best ever Queen song.
The Bohemian Rhapsody movie was so good, a must watch.
I really hope someone says “it’s out tomorrow stupid” so I can so epically whoosh them.
The ending is Shit
it’s out tomorrow stupid
Fergus Rhodes r/whooooosh
Now we just need a movie about Rush where it just shows Geddy Lee screaming for 2 hours
You know I need to give the Innuendo song another proper listen. I always enjoyed the more stadium rock stuff like "the show must go on" at the time (I was 12) and just sorta ignored Innuendo. Awesome video.
love your channel and i love queen
I’m seeing the movie tonight and I’m VERY excited!! Great video!
I knew this would be Innuendo.
Same same same and I am glad this is recognized
Thank you polyphonic! I remember when I first heard this song as a kid an I was absolutely blown away by it's sound, I've always thought this song was criminally underrepresented and underappreciated
I was guessing this was going to be The Millionaire Waltz.
booneh it really does show how amazing there are when they have so many to choose from. Millionaire Waltz, March of the Black Queen, Innuendo, the Prophet.
What other band has that many?

Thx for this upload. Awesome!!
