    Having changed my own fuel filters for a while now and seeing the horrors inside, I find the contamination argument quite plausible.

    Great video mate as always. Very valuable resource for ranger owners.
    I personally installed a secondary fuel filter with water trap just as a precaution. Primary gets changed once a year regardless of KMs, but usually around 15k, and the secondary every 2 years. Seems to do the trick. Now just have to get familiar with forscan which I have been putting off.

    My ford ranger had done over 400,000 kls when I sold it. I never had any issues with it. Same injectors. Same auto transmission. I never used truck diesel and avoided the cheap diesel at the quicky marts. Always bp or ampol premium fuel.truck diesel is of contaminants possibly also vegetable oils They quickly clog the filter and reduce flow which is needed to cool the injectors. The engine still runs fine but reduced flow through the rail overheats the injectors.

    Agree with everything you have said ,, also coatings wear on the injector internals creating poor spray patterns and unequal volumes . Poor fuel consumption and possibly high combustion temps can also occur . Carbon build up and piston erosion /cracking can occur . This is very vehicle model specific . When DID first started some brands updated every 2 years .

    Your probably right. Im work as a mechanic, and generally modern diesel injectors are pretty solidly reliable. One thing I cow across an awful lot is people putting low grade diesel and part biodiesel in their cars which most vehicles since the year 2000 are not compatible with at all. It’s the most common cause of bad emissions here. It was a long time ago that diesels would run on anything you put in the tank almost.

    I agree 100% replacement of the fuel filter every 10k with a quality factory filter. Only fill up at high turnover of diesel servo, not some dodgy operator sometimes cheap fuel with low cetane that might contain water & blended with who knows what, there is way too much money at stake. I have been doing this with my LC200 for many years, touch wood I have been lucky.

    And a pre/post filter is insanely necessary my ranger blew up over a year ago now and it was due to an under fueling injector in cylinder 3 hence why these motors begin to knock and either blow holes in pistons or melt pistons enough to get piston knock it’s not fun we spent upwards of 10000 dollars to rebuild our motor and that was doing it our self

    Great information, however there is one other failure point and that is failure of the plunger springs in the injector pump. Metal particles from the broken springs enter the injectors causing damage. Found all three plunger springs broken on inspection and all 5 injectors required replacing.

    We are a bosch service centre so see a ton of injectors everyday, mostly is down to fuel contamination, or just eroding over normal service life. Injectors have never been a forever part, they are a finite life component and just wear out.

    Some models with reduced or stopped contamination from EGR delete or restriction and catch cans. Remember a choked up inlet manifold will NOT fill cylinders with air properly . This can cause fuelling issues unknown to driver .
    Every 100,000km egr /manifolds need cleaning . Injectors spay pattern and volume need inspection every 100,000km also . In years gone by diesel fuel system servicing was included 30+yrs ago

    Looking at your fuel filter being black tells me you have a fungle infection in your fuel tank and fuel. Your get this a lot in boats and it blocks up filters. The new common rail pressures and injector nozzle sizes are designed to inject diesel only. Water and organic matter does not go through system well so you end up blowing the tip off the injector. At that point you have blow torch rather then a functional injector.

    If you can get a heat gun onto each exhaust port that will accurately isolate differences in performance, a cylinder or cylinders with lower exhaust gas temperatures than others indicate reduced power output.

    • @captainotto
      @captainotto 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not just diesel. Petrol is usually quite contaminated as well. I reckon CR fuel systems are just more susceptible due to the extreme pressures involved. The higher the pressure, the smaller the nozzle, so you don't see the contamination effects as much with petrol due to the relatively larger nozzle sizes.

    Pretty poor life expectancy, my Toyota has 420,000km on the originals and all 8 are working perfectly according to the service people I use.
    Chemtech's Diesel Power is a brilliant maintenance item, I use it in my trucks (Cummins and Volvo engines) and it more than pays for itself many times over. An Australian product as well.
