  • Mega Pit Stops - Episode 3: Fighter Jet - Putting a war machine to the acid test.
It is one of the most popular and best fighter jets in the world: JAS 39. The so called “Gripen” is a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. At the Czech Air Force Base in Caslav, the jet gets the biggest overhaul of its lifetime!
In only 40 days, the Gripen is stripped down to its bone, everything from the ejection seat to the engine is removed and checked. The 14 Gripen of the airbase are part of the “Quick Reaction Alert” Force of the NATO. If they are not in the air, the airspace is not protected. That puts a lot of time pressure and liability to the 11 mechanics, who are responsible for the aircraft.
The machinists put the war machine to the acid test. They check the hydraulic system, all moving parts and the oil - the aircraft`s blood. It is one of the most important things of the Gripen: without it, the pilot is not able to control the jet. The ejection seat - the pilot`s life insurance. The access panel is examined painstakingly - the skin. The biggest part is the engine check: the turbine is the heart of the Gripen. In the end, the weapon system - the fist - will be disassembled, so the gun is working when it is needed in action.
Every fault they will find means a delay to the schedule. So the team has to work really concentrated and, above all properly, that the Gripen will be able to start in time.

"sadly I wasn't able to become a pilot myself as my hearing and sight weren't good enough that's why I became a mechanic"
I remember that day I visited some army officiers at a orientation meeting when I was 18.
I explained to them that I'm deaf, I can talk and read on lips. And they told me I can't work in the army at all even as a mechanic.
I dreamed to be a fighter pilot.
I'm glad I can watch these guys accomplishing their dreams at least.

Those Czechs are good eggs. They don't take short cuts! A weapons platform like this, which is a solid weapons system...is only good as the pilot at the controls. But... the pilot is only as good as the flight crew keeping these incredibly complicated and high tech machines operating at the its absolute highest possibility capabilities. Every time those pilots positions and holds in the runway..their lives are literally in the hands of that crew and their efforts for nearly two months. It really is amazing how so many people can come together working on machines with thousands of parts where...if just one tiny part fails... a pilot and $35 million buck become an extremely expensive lawn dart! A dart that explodes in a fireball!
Good on ya, Czech Republic. Glad you're on our side!

If anyone ever wondered what "Gripen" means. It's "Gryphon" in swedish.

Swedish aircraft, perfect plane and superb reliability. It is not one of the most modern ones, but still one of the greatest fighter jets ever buildt.
It would have been fun to see my fellow swedes servicing these models instead. Not because these guys are not skilled enough, they sure are. I just think it would be more fun to see and maybe more interesting too, as the aircraft was engineered and buildt in Sweden.

I think saab allowed this documentary to happen so potential buyers would see about the ease of maintenance of the Gripens by showing a foreign user of gripen doing maintenance.

How cool to see how the new combat aircraft in Brazil is maintained. The difference is that this Gripen E engine is 80.40 kN and the Gripen NG version of Brazil is a 98 kN engine.

It must be really frustrating to work on a plane you love, see the pilots fly it all the time, but not be able to actually fly it yourself

Be happy for him, because he is 'the heart-beat' that provides numerous pilots with the ability to fly. Without him, the pilots would be grounded. Unsafe plane= no fly-time=no defence system=vulnerability. This man's abilities ensure that people sleep safely in their beds, and wake up free, he is a vital and integral team man, and a true professional.
