    Runs and cuts just fine. That flat head will run for many years if the owner just takes care of it. They are better than the new engines they are making today. I think that is a fair price Dave!

      @davessmallenginerevival2847  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bob. Right, these are way better engines, as long as the owner checks and changes the oil regularly. People get lazy with that

    That engine can make that pull wheelies. Those engines are far superior to many of the newer Intek engines. I did a swap on a ride on with one of those engines where the machine had an Intel and the thing had so much torque the front wheels would pop right off the ground when you let the clutch out too fast. 12 HP is more than enough. I had a 1979 5hp rear engine rider that would mow 6 foot tall grass with no issues

    The Briggs should work well. I think rooted in America does not mean anything and just suggests it is made overseas

    I agree that most are over powered. Our first one was a 14 HP and it did just fine. I always wondered why they are all 20-24 HP now. Bigger is better I guess. Thanks Dave. Stevo

    • @davessmallenginerevival2847
      @davessmallenginerevival2847  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi stevo. I believe it was customer surveys and they for whatever reason wanted more HP. So the manufacturer builds them with bigger engines because they can charge more money 💰. Thanks for tuning in Stevo

    Well, I'm sure some high priced engineers figure out how much horse power is sufficient. That being said, I replaced a 14 hp Briggs flat head on a Craftsman LT1000 with an 8 hp Briggs flathead and it mowed fine even with 260 pound me aboard!!

    • @davessmallenginerevival2847
      @davessmallenginerevival2847  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's more of a customer survey thing and these people say they want more HP, not sure what for, maybe they let their grass grow to long

    It seems to work good. Back in the day I had plenty of cheap tractors , Craftsman, MTD etc with 11 and 12 hp Briggs . The tractors were gear drive maybe 38” or 42” mower decks……. Never had an issue….

    • @davessmallenginerevival2847

      Right I remember a lot of mowers having 11, 12, 12.5 HP engines back in the day, they all seemed to work fine. I've seen some craftsmans with a 24hp Vtwin and a 42 inch deck, it's like come on , that's just stupid. Thanks for watching and commenting

    It's in good shape buddy. Overseas stuff now my friend. I think a mower that size should have a 100hp twin out of a motorbike or Skidoo. But that's just me! I guess I go to too many tractor-pulls. Take care

    Rant on! The 1954 Moto Mower I have has a 2 hp Briggs 6S on it and it is a self propelled reel mower. Dad had 3 choices in 1970 Craftsman push mowers, 3.0, 3.5, and 4 HP Tecumseh. He chose the 4 because we had a steep ditch along the road. We had that mower for years. No need for alleged 7.25 torque whatever BS. My weekly mower is a Snapper Hi Vac with 4HP 187 cc I/C Briggs on it. It does just fine. No wonder everyone got sued for lying about HP. Give me a Quantum, and I will beat your fancy OHV Briggs, or GCV160, Koehler; Chonda, PowerMore or whatever Chineseium crap the are pushing this year.

  • @whommee

    Decades ago we has a 48 inch cut wheel horse with hydrostat drive,, it had a 10 hp kohler and it had plenty of power.. It outcut my current john deere with a 17 hp Kawasaki. yes i think manufacturers are in a hp war because these younger consumers are just concerned with hp numbers

    i have a john deere lx176 (14 hp , hydro trans) that i sometimes use a 48 inch deck from my lx188 under . it works fine , even in higher grass . early 36 inch riders had 8 hp (though manual trans) , so 13 hp should be fine for your 42 inch deck . i have 2 old 42 inch murray riders (again , non hydros) that came w/14 hp engines , and they are plenty powerful . yours having a flathead is a real plus .

Might last a century, might last a week ?? Who ;nows. They don't build ANYTHING to last any more.... period. Thanks for a good video just tyhe same !
