Thanks for this conversation. As I have recently watched the film, I remain contemplating how Bob Dylan views himself, our world, and society. I must say, I am only 26 and only aware of Bob Dylan by way of this film, but I think the movie touches on a lot, most significantly, how Bob Dylan is at war with himself and society while simultaneously trying to press on. I agree that this film has me wondering what exactly Bob Dylan's values are as it underscores the impact of women and their effects on his perception of the world and himself. Also, it hints that Bob Dylan may have never identified with the family and lifestyle he was born into but innately knew there was something better, which is why he is so mysterious. I did walk away feeling inspired and appreciative of a good film, especially today, but I also felt that Bob Dylan doesn't perceive himself as a God or this most powerful being like most people perceive him to be. He is just a man doing what he loves in an incomprehensible world-someone who had/ has the audacity and courage to follow their dream and purpose.

Nailed it. And a mountain of incredible music by one of the best American poets.

Bro, I feel so sorry for the reviewers who are stuck on the - false - notion that this movie is by-the-numbers, rote, or not memorable. It's a paean to the era, the players in Dylan's circle, and the 'electric' revelation that these live performances were. Those performances in the film were masterfully and emotionally rendered.

The one thing I don't particularly like is the way some narrators center Joan (as she does herself) more than Suze Rotolo even though Bob Dylan was NOT with Joan that long. Sure she helped get him started but, he didn't seem to feel as strongly about her as she did about him.

On that Sunday afternoon, "Paul Butterfield Blues Band" played an hour-long electric set and no one freaked out about it. There was the faction that believed that folk music is always acoustic. But blues is folk music even when electric.
The political issue was Pete Seeger, and the far-Left, who believed they "owned" Dylan. That's why he was THE STAR of the evening, but LIMITED to 15 minutes of performance. Dylan defied that --
"Everybody wants you to be just like them/
They say sing while you slave/
And I just get bored" --
    and blew off that attitude.
But we don't hear much of that because the politics is to protect the sacred reputation of Pete Seeger.

You don't hear much about that because everyone knows about Pete Seeger's affilations and no one cares. No one thinks you need to make it into some kind of way to trash Pete Seeger. What a nasty and silly remark you made. Folk music WAS NOT just far left. It was largely working class though from the very beginning. Dylan still loved Pete Seeger and to this day credits him with influencing him. Just because Dylan wasn't a life long folky only doesn't mean he didn't appreciate the people who got him started OR that he blamed Pete Seeger for anything. Unlike you. YOU'RE the one trying to make this fit YOUR politics.

Keep the story a legend about Dylan which is the real history. Haven't seen any movies these past decades. The real story is better left to your imagination. All the movies that have been made these past 4 decades are decadent. Pop art and music are all falling in the end of a decadent end of time. Lazy people do nothing but are wanton for sensation and are PLASTIC that become trash
not part of any positive change. Capitalizim has killed almost everything while this generation has been absorbed into a myth . There were only a very few who became activists paraphrased rather than for a real change.Like AI is a oxymoron or pharse morphing into the making.
