  • In Star Wars, George Lucas created the concept of the Force to speak about spirituality and faith. Start your free trial at Squarespace and use this link to get 10% off your first purchase: www.squarespace... / Support ScreenPrism on Patreon: www.patreon.co...
As Star Wars: The Last Jedi approaches, we look back at what Wise Master Yoda taught us and Luke Skywalker about how to live close to the force: listen to the Force speaking within us, practice emptiness, do what we think is impossible, know everything is connected, respect nature, stay in the now, and never underestimate the small in stature.

Even though I've gotten used to the profoundly high quality content, and delivery of your videos, I was still taken aback by how deeply this video essay affected me. It was inspirational, and provoking of reflection and wonder to a degree that is still with me, and has effectively changed something in me. Thank you. I'm not sure you can fully appreciate just how much your videos affect me, and I'm sure many others, simply because, I wouldn't know how to express it. You re-interpret common, and sometimes seemingly vapid and obvious themes in pop-culture in such a way that is shocking by how moving they truly are. Once again, thank you. I look forward to your coming works.

I really feel bad, because there are people who might say this and actually believe, and do this, and there might be those who, might think they are being clever, and their intents at sarcasm end up with a rant by me. Either way, a metaphor for religion does not mean you should actually attempt to believe in "the force." As a person grounded in reality, I understand and enjoy science fiction for what it is: make believe. IF you want to enjoy, and acknowledge, the existence of a deity, God has been here all along, before the creation of the Universe(s (maybe)). The point is to see there are parallels in the wise teachings of those attempt to cultivate their spirituality, and inner connection to God.

as a kid I never thought about star wars' themes that deeply but as an adult the light/dark metaphor is more relevant than I realized. the flaw in the jedi's way was repressing the dark within them, instructing not to feel, evoke, or process any negative emotions, which eventually led to anakin's and therefore their downfall.

This is why I am willing to suspend intense criticism of Rey’s force use in the first film before seeing ore of her character arc/what foundations she has so far that signals her ability to just do. She is a survivalist. She has not had the luxury to doubt. She has had to do and not try because she may otherwise die. Being left in Jakku was basically a great training ground for becoming someone who acts on faith, faith in her circumstances one day changing and faith in her self to do the near impossible each day (salvage parts on a planet highly picked over), because that is all she had.

We must remember that, for all the glorification, Star Wars has a simplistic logic in the sense it is binary. It makes little use of brainpower to comprehend and uses faith, a zealous product of emotion, to warn against raging emotion. Truth is there is a non-binary spectrum of aspects that match, coordinate, clash, and repel. Binary logic is how we oppress our emotions rather than use them or let them override our brainpower entirely. The force continues to reinforce primitive notions. I find SW is showing how we hold onto to such things. All supernatural things are really natural things if we let go of binary mystification. How many times does one imply the supernatural is the explanation for something by saying some things can't be explained. This is irony to which many are arrogantly clueless as a result of the sort of binary logic like the force. If only binary logic could not apply good and evil to everything then we might understand the static and dynamic better, at least. The force shows that no matter how tech we get the more primitive we might stay. Like the humans in Star Trek 5 who spoke of the center of the galaxy as a literal Eden.

But the Jedi way of cutting yourself off from family, like taking the young ones away from the love of their mothers, is sometimes what leads them to the dark side. If you empty yourself of one emotion something will rush to fill the void.

@Shayan I agree with everything, except for the part about kidnapping. While a few force sensitives were kidnapped, I believe that Jedi should make a choice to join, not just a choice to stay. I understand the risk of attachment, but Jedi have an attachment to each other, the bond between master and apprentice is especially strong. The Jedi of the prequel era seemed more afraid of attachment than in control of attachment.

I love this video. Watching this video was a religious experience for me. Yoda is my favorite character in all of Star Wars and I was very pleased to see you condense everything that he talked about and taught into one, I don't want to call it informational because that would downplay it depth, video. It's interesting how you talk about how Yoda is small and unassuming and Luke doesn't recognize him as the Jedi Master. I learned a little while ago the name Yoda is the Sanskrit word for warrior. So when Luke says I'm looking for a great warrior, and Yoda says wars do not make one great, Luke is actually saying I'm looking for Yoda because Yoda means warrior.

In Star Wars dark and light represent the force. We see the Jedi were composed of both elements. To enter into light, a place of beginning first must be realized. (From the darkness of the void, light emanated). How the Jedi uses this force, is solely dependent on each Jedi, and what each Jedi perceive as truth.

Is it possible to get a transcript of this? If so, how much and where to pay?

Wow...just wow a phenomenal video! Y’all never disappoint!!🙌🏽 I knew that there was some spiritual connection between the force and God but I didn’t realize how deep it was. I didn’t know that George sought his inspiration from from God, spirituality, and religions. Thank you for doing this, this is a real encouragement to keep moving forward. I guess that’s why we all love these movies😏☺️ great job as always keep up the good work. #maytheforcebewithyou🖤

Omg this is a great video for the people who hate on the last jedi. Be a part of the collective, do not only think for yourself. Do not fear, the force is taking care of us all.
