Star Wars Symbolism: Lightsabers

    The lightsaber is the Force made visible, sensible, concrete -- the mental transformed into the physical. What really makes the lightsaber special is that it’s the bridge between the Force that’s felt inwardly, and the Force that’s manifested in the outer world. The lightsaber is not just elegant and civilized -- it’s inspirational, telling us that what we feel and believe can have a direct, visible mark on the world… if we understand how to access and control the Force.

      Three colors for the Jedi imply diversity and relativity. Red is the lone i.e. absolute color for Siths. Only a Sith thinks in absolutes.

    And here i thought Luke's shift from blue to green was because green looked better ontrasted against the Tattooine blue sky and tan sand.

      In the deleted scene for the return of the Jedi, as it shows Luke making his new lightsaber we can see he uses a light converter so that it looks green when its actually red from a synthetic crystal (which is now a bled crystal from the new canon)

    Kylo was not pretending to give his lightsaber to Han. He was being tempted by the light, he clearly was accepting Han's proposal to walk away from all of this. JJ himself said that. And is impossible to Rey being droped in Jakku to be safe from Kylo because the timeline doesn't make sense. Rey was already in Jakku when Kylo fell to the Dark Side.

      I reject what Disney says is canon just because they cant make $ off old stories they didnt make up themselves. And tell this girl to fact check better. Its not a lazer, its plasma that gets focused through the crystal and contained. Thats why their hands dont melt or catch fire. Practice blades had a stronger containment and it wouldnt cause damage. Is she making half this stuff up? Jesus its sad that they think these videos need to be made to explain stuff they can just google.

    Hey, I have an expansion on Mace Windu's purple lightsaber. As you guys said, blue merging with red creates purple, but rather than serving as Anakin's fall to the dark side, it actually symbolizes Mace's inner conflict. Now, I'm not sure what the new canon states, but Mace always wrestled with his darker side, that is why he created the saber combat form of Vaapad (old canon, not sure if it's in the new). Paraphrasing Wookiepedia: it allows the combatant to enjoy the flow of combat, hence making it a dangerous combat form as it tempts the wielder with darker instincts. So, rather than purple being a symbol for Anakin's fall (as his saber color does not change) it was actually a clear symbol for Mace's own inner conflict.

      As far as I know, Vaapad is still canon in Disneyverse. If a superficial casual fan like me (whose only proper exposure to the EU has been KOTOR 1, the Plagueis novel and the Darth Bane trilogy) knows this shit while the guys at ScreenPrism don't, then they should bloody well be ashamed of themselves. Also, does Disney really say green sabers signify someone "special" in the new canon? Because last time I checked, Qui-Gon Jinn, Kit Fisto, and other Jedi were made toast by the Sith, while Dooku and Mace Windu originally had blue lightsabers before they got their respective red and purple sabers (and both of them were more powerful than all the other green saber wielders, save for Yoda).
      Green sabers are wielded by those who prefer the study of the Force over lightsaber combat, while blue is used by those who focus more on lightsaber combat than the study of the Force (mostly). While Luke and Yoda are indeed special, I don't see how the likes of Jinn, Fisto, Quinlan Vos and other green saber wielders are any more "special" than blue saber wielders like Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ki Adi Mundi, Aayla Secura and others.

    • @partydean17
      @partydean17 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      KhukuriGod you're not wrong but neither is screenprism depending on how you take the word special. It clearly represents a certain connection to the force that may be different. Hence Luke's change. Blue saber could mean they are better fighters but what we havnt seen is apprentices with green sabers. Atleast from my recollection

      Ben Ods the fact he asked for it, doesn't mean it has no meaning in the universe. First of all, it wasn't an immediate decision for Lucas. Secondly, it doesn't matter if the meaning was given afterwards, it's still valid and fits the character.

      it's better this way, not only do the sith literally have to go through with a deeply emotional corruptive process to make their infamous red crystals instead of synthetic, but without colour they are blank slate that chose an adapt to their chosen Jedi with the colour showing the inner workinings of the creators mind and it's values.

    • @Techtronos
      @Techtronos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ryan torlay nah. Thats actually kinda boring explanation. Thing with natural/synthetic crystals has more depth and is better for world building. Sabers are red because siths are evil is laughably straightforward explanation. Disney sucks at star wars, because they do not understand the fun behind it.

  • @glenmcinnes4824

    You seek out a Crystal that is symbiotically "Yours" it takes on colour relating to what type of force user you are, it keeps it's colour until it is put in to a new or rebuilt Saber.
    Jedi Guardians are Peace Keepers and Protectors and have Blue Blades symbolizing Defense
    Jedi Counselors are Peace Makers and Scholars in the ways of the Force having Green Blades symbolizing Wisdom
    Jedi Sentinels are Knowledgeable the ways of the wider world and gifted with common scene insight they carry Yellow Blades symbolizing Practicality
    Then their are the Jedi Shadows, Jedi from other branches of the order who's lives are profoundly effected by and tied to the Dark Side they spend their lives seeking out the Dark Side and putting an end to it's Evils.
    Some Jedi fall between branches of the order and so dos the colour of their Sabers , Eg. Asoka in the later parts of the Clone Wars with her offhand saber being a Yellow/Green after she has spent some time studding with more practically minded Masters
    Then their are Jedi who just realty like a Colour

  • @robweissman5952

    The reason Luke had green was the decision of the special effects team of Return of the Jedi... It was green so it would contrast against the blue sky of Tatooine in the first sequence with Jabba the Hutt.. It was all a production decision (like Mace Windu had purple, because Samuel L Jackson likes the color purple).. It wasn't until later that all this color of the lightsaber had a deeper meaning was shoe horned on there.

    • @KielFisher
      @KielFisher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Much (most?) of the lore of Star Wars surrounding the films was later tacked on. It's well known by now that Lucas was making shit up as he went along, and a lot of what people understand of the lore came from third parties working to make sense of it all.
      I'm not saying that's a bad thing by any means - I'm a fan of the deep lore surrounding the franchise. But yeah, there wasn't a lot of rhyme or reason to the early films in particular until someone went back, devised a theory, and helped that theory become legend.

    • @BloodKills
      @BloodKills 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually Mace Windu's lightsaber was purple because Samuel Jackson wanted to be able to see himself in the battle of geonosis

    • @robweissman5952
      @robweissman5952 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, well that make sense.. Still, it was purple because the actor Samuel L. WANTED it for the movie and not because the Jedi Mace Windu was channeling both sides of the force or whatever.

    • @AaronDarkus
      @AaronDarkus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, at first was because of that, but later, they managed to create a coherent explanation to his blade color.

    • @Moviefan2k4
      @Moviefan2k4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I recall correctly, the Expanded Universe said a lightsaber's color was purely the result of the kind of crystal used to power it. Not all Kyber crystals had the same properties, so each variety would produce a different kind of blade. The backstory for "The Force Awakens" referenced this, saying that Kylo's blade was due to a less refined or possibly even damaged crystal, hence the jagged fiery blade.

    I disagree with some of the points presented.
    Lightsaber colors come from their crystals. Synthetically created crystals are usually red, and the sith used them because, for thousands of years, the jedi controlled the few special planets where the crystals were grown and harvested for their own lightsabers. The sith, living in hiding, had no choice but to create their own artificial lightsaber crystals for a long time. Once that became a tradition among sith, red lightsabers became part of their self-identity.
    When Anakin turned evil, his lightsaber still had the blue crystal and its color didn't change.
    Mace windu's purple represents how he uses the dark side in his fighting style, which is unusual for a jedi. Mace windu's anger, aggression, and distrust represents jedi hypocrisy in action, which contributes to how Anakin draws the conclusion that the jedi are not good.
    Then the video just goes into a rabbit hole of phallic, paternal, and other such 'symbolism'.

      Then the argument for the green lightsaber comes along, completely neglecting that Qui-Gon also used a green crystal. Though Qui-Gon and Yoda could not be much more different that they are (while staying good, anyway).

      @chazblank2717 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh Mikey, the canon movies haven't said jack about this bleeding crystals business. It's pure chicanery that Disney made up to sell new visual encyclopedias IMO. The issues surrounding Legends v. Disney canon is less similar to the flat v. round earth debate and more like the controversy of whether Pluto is still a planet.
      The change in canon came relatively recently, like overnight by comparison to how long we've had verifiable proof that the earth is round. Someone reading an old textbook that references Pluto as being one of nine planets in the solar system does no injustice to a person eager to know more about the local galaxy, just like reading old Star Wars EU books does no injustice to a person eager the know more about the galaxy far far away.

    After giving it thought I'd say that while the Sith are evil using the dark side isn't inheritly bad, it just depends on how you use it. As with the prequel era Jedi their flaws are being too narrowed minded and dogmatic. They refused to progress in their ways such as not allowing for personal attachments like love which led to their downfall with anakin

    • @MadGenius
      @MadGenius 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True in the canon material Sith and Jedi fight for the same cause to be powerful and wise in the force but just represent a different ideology. For instance, how Anakin wanted to protect Padme at any cost by seeking more power which is considered a weekend state of the mind from a Jedi. However, in the Darth Maul issue comic, he wanted to find his own apprentice but instead killed the young padawan in combat he was trying to convert. Yet the Emperor knew of this betrayal and commend Maul for his actions because he was becoming a true Sith.

    There is one small flaw with this theory. If the light saber is purely a physical manifestation of the force in the handler then a light saber would be nothing more than a useless handle in the hands of a non force sensitive person. Mace Windu's purple lightsaber doesn't reprensent Anakin's turn to the dark side. It represent's Mace Windu's fighting style named Vaapad. It's the only style that was able to beat the emperor because it chanels the dark side in oneself. It enabled Windu to turn Sidious's power against him.
    Purple lightsabers are used by those who study the dark side while staying on the light side of the force. Even though Samuel Jackson requested a purple lightsaber first, the meaning of this color was already canon by the time "Revenge of the Sith" was made. If you need to analyse that scene, you should concentrate on the contrast between Mace Windu who has touch the dark side and remained in control and Anakin who did the same but failed to keep control.

    I think you're missing the whole point of the prequel trilogy (as did Disney). The prequel trilogy is basically all about the dark side. The whole point of it is to blur the line between light and dark, to deconstruct the concepts of good and evil in the SW universe. I'm pretty sure Lucas was self-critical of himself for making such a strong divide, and probably decided to change the meaning of the original trilogy. The thing is, you talk about the red lightsabers as representing agression, and generally talk about the dark side as being about giving into 'dark' emotions. But it's not about that. The dark side is about letting your feelings go free, like satanism. If you read about satanism, it becomes apparent, the whole existence of Satanist Church is more like a rebellion against the christian authoritarian church. The followers of the dark side see the Jedi as authoritarian. They are against the order, they don't want to restrict themselves. In the prequels it's shown that you can't truly love when you're a jedi. You can't get attached to anybody or anything, and it actually goes AGAINST the nature of people. It's also shown that the jedi are hypocrites, like when they make Anakin lie and betray, and eventually they wanna kill, as in that scene with Mace Windu. If you watch the films in chronological order though, you can see how the rise of the Empire doesn't make things better. It shows that Palpatine is also a hypocrite. All this talk about freedom, and he creates an even more authoritarian state. It actually kinda reminds radical leftists in that sense, especially russian communists. They also were fighting for freedom, but ended up creating a state even more totalitarian than Tsarist Russia. So in the end Darth Vader realises the hypocrisy of Palpatine. He realises he went too far in his attmepts to do good, and that the jedi were a lesser evil. The whole Star Wars saga became about the flawed human nature. It doesn't matter what you believe, it's always hard to stick to your ideals. Whatever ideologies we follow, it's important to remain human.
    P. S. All that is also reflected in the expanded universe. For example, if you play Star Wars KotOR, you'll see both the Sith Empire and the Republic doing evil deeds.

I mean I don't like Satan, but as someone who does not believe in religion anymore, i at least don't like the part where you can't do certain things. As the time goes by the Sith changed to be more evil but never left the idea of being free unlike the Jedi, and Jedi being so oblivious to their religion make themselves look bad in ways. Is this somewhat what it is?

    • @Pyro-Moloch
      @Pyro-Moloch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua Hicks I'm not denying that, I'm just saying the light side in SW kinda goes against human nature, like many religions nowadays. It doesn't mean, for example, that being a christian isn't a good thing to do. The point is, it's not a bad thing either.

    • @Pyro-Moloch
      @Pyro-Moloch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quentin Diaz yeah, I feel it's sorta what it is, or at least close to that. I feel like the Sith aren't necessarily evil even, they just probably believe in things that the jedi don't believe in. For example, the Jedi say you only use force for peacekeeping, but the Sith probably see that statement as ridiculous and hypocritic. I believe the Sith have a very rational explanation for why they pick the dark side, they're not cartoony villains. And that's why I like SW, cause it's a fight of ideologies, not of good and evil or one race vs another. In SW universe people don't get born a certain way like in other fantasy universes (for example you're born as an elf, therefore you're enemies with orcs or smth along those lines).

    • @joshuahicks7798
      @joshuahicks7798 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Pyro-Nexus I don't think the light side works against human nature. I think it actually fulfils human nature and draws people away from their dark tendencies. What everyone gets wrong about the light side is that it can only interpreted through the teachings of the Jedi. And I'm pretty sure we can all agree that the Jedi messed up in how they approached the concepts of light and darkness.

    A small note on Mace Windu's violet lightsaber. Of the seven traditional lightsaber forms of combat among the Jedi, the seventh was considered the most aggressive form. It involved an enjoyment of combat (much like how fencers and kendo-ka enjoy the skill and eagerness to win on a match without actually seeking to harm one another) which teeters dangerously on the line of the darkside. Mace Windu was a practitioner of this form, and thus his lightsaber shows this in a color hue that represents the blue tinged with red.

    This was a very well done video, thank you for making it! I never actually thought about some of the real-world symbolism of the lightsaber colors. I constantly think about what they mean in-universe, but that's mostly because of the games.
    I do have a few fanboy nitpicks, so please forgive me:
    - Palpatine was the Supreme Chancellor, he stopped being a Senator by the end of Phantom Menace.
    - Until we know for certain the path he is on (like from The Last Jedi), Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He can be considered a Dark Jedi, however. The Knights of Ren have not been revealed to be Sith, but the Order of Sith Lords also died with Palpatine and Vader.
    - Red is not a naturally occurring kyber crystal color. Dark side users "bleed" their kyber crystals in order to make them red.

    Luke rejecting the lightsaber at the beginning of The Last Jedi makes all the more sense in light of the points about the lightsaber representing aspects of a person's connection to the force and having a certain emotional significance. The blue lightsaber, for him, was all about his relationship to his father. All that is in the past for him. It no longer has importance for him. The lightsaber itself has chosen Rey.

  • @RoguePandora

    A little sidenote on Mace Windu. Yes he did want a different color to stand out, but lorewise his crystal was purple due to his stance in the force. He had a self developed fighting style which let the user absorb the darkside and channel it back to the attacker while not being consumed by it. That's the reason his turned purple (mix of red and blue). Though the symbolism of Anakin falling to the darkside at that moment with the purple colored saber feels nice as well, the deeper meaning.

    Purple represents Mace Windu's dance with the dark side, his fighting style reflects darkness back on his opponent. This is why it is canon that he legitimately defeated Sidious, he can beat any dark opponent through this method. (However it causes him to go near to the dark side, he is the only Jedi to successfully use this style without turning dark, it requires intense concentration which was broken when he surprisingly lost his hand, otherwise even without his lightsaber he could've turned the Emperor's lightning back onto him)

    -there's not only red, green, blue and purple but also yellow and white

    -colour show your role :
    -green are peace keeper
    -blue are more fighter (even tho they are still peace keeper in a sence)
    -violet is force extremly skilled jedi OR sith
    -yellow is a bit more difficult to categorise but guardian of the jedi temple are an example

    Isn't the purple lightsaber symbolic of gray morality? (Having qualities of both the light and dark side?) Never would've thought that it would be used metaphorically as Anakin's shift from Jedi to Sith.

    • @SequentiallyCompact
      @SequentiallyCompact 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's symbolic of a Vaapad master. In-universe it's just a coincidence that the purple lightsaber is a blend of red and blue, but the writer of the novelization (Matthew Stover) took the opportunity to explain why Windu was able to face off against a powerful dark side user. His style, Vaapad, rides the wave of the dark side while keeping the user from directly channeling it, thus avoiding its corruption. It's an aggressive and lightning fast style that few can master without being tainted by darkness.

    All fight in a story: is a battle of will. (So the battle can be in ALL WILL at one's: the conflict of the ''soul world'': in Star Wars the ''sould world'' is represented in/as ''the Force'')
    The lightsaber is just the representative of this very principe. Wich is an art principe: writing fight without the notion of ''will'': is writing without ''story''
    For example: Make someone fight (without ''willing to fight/injured, for fight/injured sake'') can be extremely meaningfull about the world narrated to us. For example: the necessity of one's action on peace (like Yoda).
    Everything in Star Wars is representative of ''art principe''. (for example: The hero's journey). It's like watching a 101 class.
