The more I learn about it, the more I think 40K is basically the best steelman argument you could ever make against fascism's central fantasy: the ultimately strong, wise, powerful, aggressive, benevolent leader. The Emperor of Mankind is literally the best authoritarian you could want: he's a legitimate ubermensch, with literal superpowers which let him single-handedly restore interstellar travel to humanity, and an unparalleled intellect with which he can construct all manner of tech and supersoldiers to defeat actual barbaric warlords in the uniting of humanity under his empire, and he genuinely does have the benevolent--if expansionist--interests of the entire human race at heart, and in the process of his conquest is in fact defending all of humanity from actual alien invasions. And 40K says "The ultimate consequence of such an impossible man, such as you fascists yearn for unceasingly, would be that once he was killed, as autocrats of all kinds almost invariably are eventually, the glorious, species-encompassing empire he built could not possibly maintain itself without him; yet because of the extraordinary initial success of the superman's conquest during his lifetime, it could take centuries or even millennia for the systems he set in motion to fully collapse into corruption or despair, during which time the ruling class's desperation to maintain the fallen leader's crumbling legacy would reduce the vast majority of the human species to a level of debasement and misery we can scarcely imagine."

Essentially. Its more theocratic feudalism/fascism (Eastern Roman Empire) than true fascism but close enough for government work in both regards.

To keep it simple because tbh, I think this comment is long. I am new to 40k but I can make some approximations.
Grimdark is never a ‘good’ genre. There is no good in the genre because all the good people are either dead or out of the story, be it sealed, mind fucked, body fucked or whatever else. In that sense, the idolization of the Imperium is at its root is basically worshipping a talking dead guy, which is a literal south park episode. There is no purity in 40K, there is no good. It is clear cut, everyone is evil. I am going to play the Tau, but even the Tau are not good. They have a caste system, that is all you would ever need in your modern, geopolitical context to dismiss it as bad. It is indeed the best steelman of being anti fash, but to keep it simple it is not because ‘oh lol the autocrat can die because assassins tend to that and shit collapses.’. In fact, dis that ever reliably work for all kings and queens? Sometimes, but not always. If the Emperor was replaced by Gulliman like in the story, it would at least be progress and be a much better political situation.
Case in point, 40k has a facism problem because facists don’t understand media comprehension, as Vaush would say. I agree. I would love to write 40k stories, but even my Tau army cant be the good guys. They cant be. Because the setting is grimdark. If you want some good and maybe some power fantasys, watch shonen anime. Otherwise, idfc, 40k is the one reason why you do not want authoritarianism and irrational belief to take hold leading to idealic bigotry, racism, systemic discrimination etc etc and the one reason why you should never lead by cult of personality. No way. Even in a science fantasy grimdark, mind you, is that it is so unrealistic, GW had to spell it out it in black and white so these fascists can ‘get it.’ And even then, I do not have my hopes up too high.

I worked for GW in the nineties when they were still based. We did occasionally get some very strange sorts in the store, who seemed to take a deal of pleasure in some of the aspects of the background. At the time, because these were the old days where everyone was without internet and indoor toilets and nobody lived past twenty years old before dying of a headache, we were genuinely confused by these people, and as we got to know them, we gradually banned them from the store. We didn’t want their bullshit, especially considering we also had kiddies and their parents in the store, notwithstanding the actual revulsion we felt for these misfits.
We were a bunch of hairdyed misfits who liked wearing leather jackets and smoking cigarettes - absolute hardcore rebels, in other words - and we very much knew that there was a minority of people that didn’t actually understand a single thing, both about the background material as well as how human beings actually work. They thought it was Wehrmacht fanfic. It wasn’t - it was a piss-take of the right wing in particular, and authoritarianism in general.
It seems that some of those awful people went on to set up a TH-cam channel where they could double down on how there are no blacks and no trans people in WH40k. They were then, and remain now, absolute simps for genocidal pussy. But, and this is important, the vast, vast majority of people were just passionate, engaged (and, as a result of how things were priced, increasingly impoverished) people who just had an absolute blast playing games with us and each other.
In short, when they say “we’ve said it before” they mean it. A fash who thinks 40k includes them is an idiot. It does not. You are the butt of the joke. Fuck off, nazi. It was true back then, and it’s true now. Fuck off, and don’t come back ever.
Re: GW specifically, It’s not necessarily got more progressive; it’s just had to be more explicit about it due to Nazi fucknuts claiming that the imperium have “the right idea” and glorying in how there are no blacks (despite the tallarn and the salamanders being a thing - and the red eye thing for salamanders is relatively new, they used to just be black dudes).

Fascists hold opinions so extreme that satire of said opinions can't be distinguished from the real thing, apparently not even by themselves. Fascists actively WANT something like the Imperium, therefore to them, the exaggeration doesn't apply.
(and tbf, Warhammer skirts that line a lot more than other fantasy/scifi fascist empires. It's a bit "too real" while also not always making clear enough that the Imperium is actually evil - they're portrayed as working for the continued existence of mankind, after all, which lots of people perceive as a noble goal that justifies their extreme methods)
And I'm also pretty sure Games Workshop skirts that line on purpose. They're aware how big a part of their universe is fascist worshippers and incel neckbeards, so they're purposefully blurring that line where they can with plausible deniability do so.

I remember when I started playing D&D during the summer of my freshman year of high school, I knew nobody else in my high school played and after the summer passed my group that I got into through a local hobby shop was primarily conservative white cis adult men, some of the incel-ey and faschy variety and the hobby shop was a cock-house to say the least, but most not as politically intense. Seeing TTRPG companies become more progressive and communities healthier even in that short of time brings me so much joy. It's overall a pretty progressive space -- that's the whole reason his channel exploded, he harassed someone out of the community and WotC gave him a lifetime ban for it. I always imagined that at some point, after the emperor was nearly lost due to the failing of the golden throne, and after some massive effort was required to save him, he would be restored fully to life, awakening once more. Upon his return he would take a look around and his reaction would be something like "What is this? I never ordered any of THIS stuff! I only care about defeating chaos. Where did you ever get the idea I wanted you exterminating aliens? Why are you keeping our people in such conditions? If anything you're only helping chaos by sowing all this enmity and suffering. The way you've been running things is nothing like _I_ told you to. You've twisted what I said and made up other things entirely. This all needs to change." At which point somebody would declare: "False emperor! The emperor is false! Something else came back from the warp!" Kicking off a big apocalyptic civil war arc between the emperor and the people who believe in the version of the emperor that they've created for themselves so much that they wouldn't even recognize or like the real man if he returned and spoke to them. Of course I can't imagine them doing something like this unless they were looking to "end times" 40k because it would be such a huge shift in the status quo.

So... I feel that context is necessary in this situation.
Its not illegal to wear nazi paraphernalia in Spain. This stems from the fact that it was the only country where the fascists won and were left untouched since Spanish Civil War happened before WW2, and after WW2 ended, Spain ended up being a safe haven for nazis. After Franco's death, there was no process akin to de-nazification of the forces, political parties or judicial system, so fascism is seen in a very positive light compared to other countries. In fact, there has been scarce, if any, condemnations against Franco's regime on right-wing parties and at least one of them follows the fascist playbook, combined with our own brand of Trumpism.
Do not be surprised if in a couple years you find out that we've followed Poland or Hungary's path. Hopefully it wont fuel other countries's fascisms even further (check out Behind the Insurrections, a great podcast from Robert Evans) but ramifications could be more dangerous than expected.

1- If you smoked and you wanted to use something other than matches to light up a cigar/cigarette (gas lighter/zippo) you needed a license to use those.
2- If 3 or more people where gathered outdoors but not in a public venue (bar, coffee shop, grocerie store, etc.) it was considered they where plotting against the government and they where arrested.
3- Unmarried women could only travel with a written permission from their father, married women with a permission from their husband.
4- Known or suspected members of the Socialist or Comunist party where arrested and sent to the Tarrafal prison, nicknamed "The Oven", in Cape Verde, where they where tortured to reveal names and locations of member of those parties.

You know what's interesting about the far right, at least the Western far right, is they like to claim they are devout Christians, or at the very least they like the Christian aesthetic. But they do also claim to want to live in the 40k Universe (at least those who play 40k do). But, that Universe is as close to Hell as you can get without it actually being Hell. No matter who you follow, which side you're on, unless you're one of the races unaffected by the Warp like Necrons or Tyranids you end up there anyway. When you're alive you live a life of hell, whomever you are. If you get captured by Dark Eldar or Chaos you will likely be tortured to death, possibly over decades or maybe even longer if you're really unlucky. If you get to die quickly at the hands of the Imperium, Tyranids, Orks, Eldar, Necrons or Tau you go straight to the Warp. If you live as pretty much anyone you either have a short life, a painful life or even if you have a hedonistic life you won't have a happy one. Nobody settles down and raises a family, not really, everybody just works until they die in some form or another. It's just Hell, pure Hell, and it's written that way intentionally. I'm sure in that Universe somewhere on some remote planet at some point in history people have nice lives but that's never the focus of the story itself, and also that's not what the far right are thinking of are they. They want to be Space Marines, they want to be mass murderers, its a genocide fantasy for them, but in that Universe you suffer whether you're the victim or you're doing the killing. There are no winners, that's the point. So I see it like this, it's the far right telling us they would rather live in Hell than the world we already live on, which makes sense because whenever they take power all they do is make everyone's lives worse except for those at the very top, much like in the 40k Universe. The far right are Hell fetishists, they don't worship God, they just pretend to, they worship Satan, and not the Satanic Bible version, they worship the medieval torture demon.

    • @creativedesignation7880
      @creativedesignation7880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Makes perfect sense to me. Hell is a Christian invention. You got to be pretty far gone, if you think "Hey, how can make these people obey every rule our church has set, even when they are completely alone and no one can control their behavior? I got it! Let's tell them there is a realm of near unimaginable suffering and terror and that they deserve to be there for all eternity, if they don't obey us."
So, if you think about not what the Christian mythology is in regards to it's content, but the fact that someone made that up on purpose and decided to pretend it's real, it's pretty obvious that Christians today still like to imagine hell.

That's interesting because the Covenant were written by relatively Conservative writer's as a stand in for Islamic terrorism, given the time they came out. This is more notable in the 2nd game than the first, but honestly I'd be shocked if Halo was dominated by left-wing writer's given the approach to the subject. I think ultimately though they are probably moderate and don't want to necessarily offend anyone, but the story is rather pro-militarist. I mean, the Spartans are super soldiers genetically modified and selected from a young age, that's eugenics. They are also all that stands between Earth and its total destruction. Plus on some super lazy level I get the impression that the Flood = communism, although clearly also inspired by diseases and parasites. Don't worry I'm not knocking being a fan of Halo, I don't think anyone should feel guilty of the art they enjoy unless it's directly and intentionally promoting harm to a real group of people, which I don't think Halo is, it's all allegory.

Maybe try a Necromunda gang or Killteam squad? You’d only need 10-15 models which keeps the costs down a lot compared to the full 40k armies.

I didn't dive that deep into 40K lore, but one of the first things I learned is "There are no good guys." I guess it's easy to forget how awful the Imperium is when they're written as the protagonists for every book, though

I don't think you can ever say "there are no good guys" about any setting.
You can say that all the major factions are pretty evil, but... that's just life? Like, there's also no "good guys" faction in the real world.
There's probably lots of people in the universe who could be considered good guys, they're just probably not actively part of one of the bigger factions and thus less relevant to the games.

I'm not surprised that it went well, honestly, I think it's a small niche of people in the 40k community that actually think fascism is good and don't see the obvious satirical badness of the imperium. It's like how must people who appreciate greek mythology and history will readily admit "oh yeah, and they were super duper gay as hell and weirdly into little boys," and only a niche group of nutjobs think they were actual giga chad embodiments of heterosexual western values.

I find it funny that one of the people who thinks the Ancient Greeks were giga chads and who has a hard on for them is my embarrassing Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Still I gotta hand it to the guy, he is very virile, has like a tonne of kids, credit where credit is due (poor kids).

I played war thunder for a while too (not as good a game as it used to be, as a side note) and can confirm the intense toxicity of the community. (To the level of knowing someone who's profile was identifiably feminine being repeatedly and frequently targeted for team kills at the start of matches to an absurd degree, which would mean being removed from the match entirely and possibly needing to spend in game resources or wait to be able to use the vehicle again)
I can also confirm that the people playing the German tanks had the worst teamwork by far.

If I were to satirize spicy food by saying there was a dish so spicy that it sent people into week-long comas and told a story about people who would kill to eat it, some real people would find that story aspirational. Like, "someday," they would hope, "we'd be able to make a dish that spicy," and they really could envision themselves killing to eat it. I would then have to clarify in a statement that it's actually a satire of the weirdo masochists out there who love food only in proportion to the pain that it inflicts on them, and I wanted to show how no one in their right mind would want that.
My point being that morals are like any other taste in food, movies, or music. Despite all evidence to the contrary, people believe that we all feel good when helping others and feel bad hurting others, but no: through whatever combination of nature and nurture, some people genuinely find evil to be good. As it is with those who crave spicy foods, some people take genuine pleasure in suffering, and will therefore spend their whole lives promoting it. It isn't that fascists believe that fascism would maximize wellbeing, no: they know it will cause misery for everyone; that's literally what's so appealing to them. And they don't understand how people could fight against that, when, from their perspective, the pain is so, so good. That's what we're up against.
