Those mechanical seals are easy used to do them all the time also taught my motormen and derrickmen how to do them but could get a complete rebuild pump for about the cost of the parts and with a warranty on the pump

Ive worked on these pumps a bunch of times. The best thing to do is to send out the sleeve to be carbide coated. Second, throw the teflon packing in the garbage and move to an aramid packing. Grease isnt an ideal lube for packing but thats how these pumps do it. Use a calcium sulphonate base grease for better water washout resistance. If you do these things and make sure no one tightens the packing down to tight, it will double the life of the pump.
