      Eah, great comparison.... It always boils down to simple variables. 1) Can I afford $ to buy or keep and preferably both? 2) Can I afford the Time to figure out the Cool Niche Elements, Cool Sounds that fulfil the moment of my sonic goal and need? 3) does it add or replace my other gear ? 4) Are you making money in this discipline and living the edge or are you a weekender / hobbyist / collector ?

    Even though the MatrixBrute looks so impressive, the Pro 3 is powerful too, but it's hidden behind intuiive design. One thing the MatrixBrute has going for it, though, is pulling up a factory preset, you can visually see how the mod matrix is congifured on the matrix of buttons. On the Pro 3, I have to menu dive to figure out how a preset's mod matrix is congifured,. But on the Pro 3 congifuring the mod matrix is so easy, it can be done quickly even during live play in most instances without any need to examine labels along a X and Y table. It can be easier on the MatrixBrute if you memorized the locations. But in the end, the Pro 3 won me over. Just a very intuitive and smart design. I really did like the tilting control panel on the MatrixBrute, so I got the Pro 3 SE with a better designed flip up control panel that doesn't require lifting all the cables when propping it up.

    • @delscoville
      @delscoville ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, forget to mention, even though the Pro 3 only hhas 4 CV in and 4 CV out on the back, they can be configured for anything, signal voltages or audio, so if you want each oscillator to have their very own output it can. The labels on the back make it seem very limited, but they aren't It makes a great controller for a Eurorack, but honestly, both make great controllers for Eurorack.

    Thanks for taking all the time to make the comparison. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see how the Matrixbute could have a greater sonic range when the Pro 3 has a wavetable oscillator, three filters rather than two, and a much deeper modulation matrix.

    • @tjontheroad
      @tjontheroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      PRO 3 does have the digital oscillator with 32 waveforms where as MatrixBrute oscillator 3 is limited. But, MatrixBrute oscillators 1 and 2 have more range than PRO 3 with the ability to blend and modulate the 3 waveforms continuously while adding a sub-oscillator. PRO 3 oscillators 1 and 2 can only have a single waveform type and shape mod at any given moment.
      PRO 3 does have 3 filter types but only one type can used at a time and only one is state variable. MatrixBrute has 2 filters where both can be used in series or in parallel. Also, MatrixBrute has the additional master cutoff control and “Brute Factor” drive controls. Lastly, both MatrixBrute filters are state variable.
      PRO 3 has 32 user definable mod matrix slots. MatrixBrute has 12 hard wired and 16 user definable mod matrix slots (28 total). Effectively, PRO 3 doesn’t have such a big advantage there with the additional 4 slots. MatrixBrute does have more available destinations.

      @@tjontheroad I think on the Pro 3 VCOs if you combine using the "Shape" knob (which you know is continuously variable from triangle to sawtooth to pulse) together with using the "Shape Mod" knob (which changes the pulse width of the VCOs), you should get a very similar, if not identical, wave blending function. The implementation on the interface for blending is different on the Pro 3 but I'm guessing that the raw VCOs are no less flexible/variable on the Pro 3. (And yes, the Pro 3 digital oscillator has 32 wavetables, each with 16 waveforms as you pointed out). It might be nice to have a sub-oscillator on the the Pro 3, but in practice I rarely have the need on an analog synth to add a fourth oscillator with a basic waveform to the sound/patch. Anyway, again, nice work on the video. Very informative. Much appreciated.

      @@tjontheroad Nice comparison! One thing though:
      "PRO 3 has 32 user definable mod matrix slots. MatrixBrute has 12 hard wired and 16 user definable mod matrix slots (28 total). Effectively, PRO 3 doesn’t have such a big advantage there with the additional 4 slots. MatrixBrute does have more available destinations."
      While the Pro-3 has more sources and has CCs as destinations, the MatrixBrute has no less than 448 simultaneous mod matrix slots(!!!). It has 28 simultaneous _destinations_ (from a selection of all parameters + all 448 mod slots) - It's pretty much untouchable in this area. :)
      While it's almost as easy to assign as modulator on the Pro-3, one the assignments are done, they're no longer visible or hands-on as you have to access them through the menu. That's another MxB exclusive - the mod matrix actually being visible and editable at all times.
      I wanted to love the Pro-3, but your video has convinced me that it's not worth it for me (thanks for helping me save a stack of money :)). I much prefer the MxB sound and interface.

    Why does the MB always sound buzzy / like it’s running through a fuzz pedal?! Is that overdrive? the SP filter?

    • @tjontheroad
      @tjontheroad  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      MB has lots of filter overdrive and feedback available. The oscillators can also be easily driven into the mixer. It can also sound very sweet and light if programed without all that hard gain staging.

    What are your thoughts on form factor. It might help me decide between the Pro 3 and SE. The screen is quite an important thing when using the Pro 3 - do you find yourself bending / leaning over the keys/panel to see it properly? I'm wondering if the SE would be a great option as it brings the screen right in front of you at a nice ergonomic angle. Having used the Matrixbrute do you think the Pro 3 would be better in that for factor?

    • @tjontheroad
      @tjontheroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IMO, the PRO 3 SE isn't worth the extra money from a practical point of view. Sure, it looks nice with the wood sides and tilt panel. But, it takes more studio space and doesn't really make PRO3 much easier to use. Only maybe the bottom portions of the sequencer screens are tough to see at an angle. That's not worth an extra $600 to me. Conversely, the MatrixBrute benefits greatly with the tilt panel vs PRO 3 because the MatrixBrute panel is much bigger in size. When laying flat, the MatrixBrute will wear out your arms reaching for the top row controls.
      Thanks for watching. Cheers, TJ

    • @MadelnMachines
      @MadelnMachines 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tjontheroad Fair enough. It is also screen printed vs the sticker. I see that it's only 33cm deep and the Pro 3 still has an angle to it so the screen won't be far away. I actually think the non-SE looks better though - at least from the pics. I didn't really hear much i liked from this demo though - I much preferred the matrixbrute.

    • @tjontheroad
      @tjontheroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MadelnMachines Yes, I forget about the stickered panel. I hope it doesn't peal off with age. I can't say I prefer one over the other sound wise. They sound different in many ways. I do think MatrixBrute is a bit more versatile.

      The SE is great - I love the tilt panel, and it looks gorgeous. 😍 And sounds every bit as good as the standard model, of course.

  • @Howdy606
    @Howdy606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think with MB you can play a seq/arp and still be able to play a seperate solo with a paraphonic voice. Don't think the Pro 3 allows that? Great vid btw.

    • @tjontheroad
      @tjontheroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MatrixBrute has a Duo-Split mode where the arp or sequencer can play the lower half of keys with the 3rd oscillator. The 1st and 2nd oscillator play the upper half of keys. PRO3 doesn't have a split function.

You can do this on both LFO1 and LFO2, simultaneously. Imagine two LFOs of your own design, AND including delay on LFO2. Insanity!

    I appreciate Dave doing his thing still, after all these decades. However, that S&H->Filter patch @1:00 was a glaring reminder of what I dislike about DSI filters.
    To me the MB is like the best alternative to Macbeth M5 or GRP A4 and for about half the money. It sounds like what Chewbacca looks like - somehow much more inviting to listen to than the other 'brutes (the PolyBrute isn't bad, either. But not sounding as good and lively as MB imho).
